Easter Eggstravaganzas to feature egg hunts, games and more
BY FRANCINE FULTONFreedom Life Church will host Easter Eggstravaganzas this year at its main campus in Christiana, as well as at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood. The events will be Saturday, March 30, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at both locations.
During each Easter Eggstravaganza, which is being organized by the FL Kids Team, children will be able enjoy inflatables, face painting, concessions and games. There will also be a chance to meet
with live animals like rabbits and chicks.
Last year, the events were held for the first time at both locations in order to accommodate the growing number of families. “At Muddy Run, we had 600 kids (in attendance), and at main campus, we had about 300,” said Gina Turk, FL Kids Team director. “That morning, we hid 15,000 eggs at Muddy Run and 5,000 for the main campus.”
For the egg hunt, children will be separated by age groups.
Children can collect as many eggs as they can carry; youngsters should bring their own bags or baskets. The eggs will have small gifts or candy inside, and several of the eggs will contains certificates for larger prizes, such as Squishmallows.
The activities and egg hunt are open to children up to fifth grade. Admission is free, and pregistration is not required.
“The best part of our Easter Eggstravaganzas are the endless smiles,” Turk added. “We have the

Connecting to the community: EPC at 70
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close
to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.
“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.

Sadsbury Friends celebrate 300th anniversary
BY FRANCINE FULTONSadsbury Friends Meeting, a Quaker house of worship, is observing its 300th anniversary this year with special events. In January, the meeting hosted a wedding re-enactment. The bride and groom were portrayed by students from Delaware Valley Friends School, who filled the roles of Joseph Miller and Jane Kirk, the first couple to be married at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1738.
The next scheduled event will be a talk by historian and educator Harold Finigan of Darby Meeting, who will speak about the Lenapi and Minquas Trail. The free lecture will be offered on Saturday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. in the downstairs community room at the Meeting.
According to Meeting member Connie Webster, the trail from the Susquehanna River to the Schuylkill River was used for trade with Native Americans by Dutch and Swedish settlers.
See Sadsbury Friends pg 2
Sadsbury Friends from pg 1
“Before the Quakers came to Pennsylvania, the Dutch and Swedes settled around Philadelphia and Wilmington. They were interested in getting beaver pelts to sell to the people in Europe. The native people were the ones who got the pelts,” she explained. “(Finigan) will talk about the history of the trail and how they transported the pelts along the trail from central Pennsylvania down to the Philadelphia area.”
She noted that the trail
is also called the Great Minnequa Pass and that a historical marker was posted at the location of the trail near Gap. The inscription on the marker reads, “An Indian trail, which was later the original Conestoga Road, passed through Gap, half a mile south of here. Over it, in the 17th century, Minquas (Conestoga) Indians carried quantities of beaver skins from the Susquehanna Valley to trading posts near Philadelphia.”
“Strasburg Road vaguely
follows the path of that early trade route between the two rivers,” Webster added.
“When William Penn came over, the Quaker settlers had the same trade agreement with the native people.”
Additionally, the Meeting will hold open worship on Good Friday, March 29, from noon to 3 p.m. The silent worship is held to commemorate the three hours of Jesus’ crucifixion.
“This is a drop-in - drop-out event,” Webster said. “Some of us will be there for three hours, but anybody can come during that span of time and stay as long as they want.”
The next scheduled anniversary event at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting is a high tea, set for Saturday,
May 11.
Sadsbury Friends Meeting is located at 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap. More details about the programs are available by searching for “Sadsbury Friends Meeting” on Facebook. To learn more about the Meeting and its history, visit www.sadsbury friendsmeeting.org.

First responder organizations receive grants
Grants were recently awarded to first responder organizations through the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program created by the General Assembly and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Office of the State Fire Commissioner. Projects eligible for funding include construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training, reduction of
existing debt, education and public outreach, and staff recruitment and retention efforts.
All fire companies, EMS services and volunteer rescue squads are eligible to apply for the annual grant program, which is funded solely with state gaming proceeds. This year’s funding amounts are contingent on the recipients filing their grant agreements with the Office of the State Fire Commissioner by July 1.
Thirteen fire and
ambulance companies in the 43rd legislative district were awarded nearly $257,000 in grants through the program. This year’s grant recipients are Akron Volunteer Fire Company, $15,396; Bareville Fire Company No. 1, $14,812; Ephrata Community Ambulance Assocation Inc., $15,000; Farmersville Fire Company, $15,785; Garden Spot Fire Rescue, $29,952; Gordonville Fire Company and Ambulance Association, $29,812;
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”
Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there
are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve
been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”
Saturday on the Porch
BY FRANCINE FULTONWhen members of the Christiana Historical Society were able to secure the William P. Brinton House as their headquarters, they envisioned a place that would not only house their artifacts and historical exhibits but serve as a community gathering place.
Part of that vision became reality as the society presented its first Saturday on the Porch program on March 2. During the event, the community was invited to purchase hot coffee, hot tea and sweets, including whoopie pies, brownies and cookies, while enjoying conversation with friends and neighbors. Also available for sale were historical society mugs.
Musical entertainment was provided by The Smith Family Singers of Coatesville, which included Mary Smith; her husband, Steven Rogers; and her sister, Keisha Smith.
Among those in attendance were historical society members Darlene Colon, society president, and Jim Groff, vice president, who were both pleased with the turnout despite the damp weather. They reported that nearly 50 people stopped by over the course of the morning. Lap blankets were available for people to borrow. “People are enjoying the conversation,” said Colon.
Saturday on the Porch will
be held on the first Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon through November. The next scheduled event will be on April 6.
Groff reported that the historical society will use the proceeds from the monthly events for the ongoing restoration of the 1867 Brinton House, which is located at 17 Green St., next to Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church. “We really need the funds to fix this house up,” he stated.
In addition to the previously mentioned uses, the house and surrounding property will provide extra space for the society’s annual open house on Sept. 11, which commemorates the Christiana Resistance. Colon is a descendant of one of the participants in the Resistance.
Visitors to the March event were able to sneak a peek inside the house, but it is not yet suitable for
occupation. There was also a display of photos offered so that visitors could learn about the restoration project. Groff reported that the rotted joists inside the house are currently being replaced and that the building needs a

three through 12. All youths can join the 4-H large animal project clubs for a fee and may select one or more projects to participate in. The projects are related to breeding and market livestock, including beef, goats, sheep, and swine. Members may also participate in the livestock or meat judging teams. Additionally, Chester County 4-H members may pursue opportunities in an array of other topics such as family and community health, leadership and citizenship, natural resources, STEM, community service, leadership, and scholarship. Not only do youths gain knowledge in the topic area of their choice, but they may also acquire life skills like communication, teamwork, citizenship, giving back, and a strong work ethic.
The Pennsylvania 4-H program is available through the help of adult volunteers. Volunteers have completed background checks.
