Students from the Octorara Junior-Senior High School (OJSHS) Culinary Arts program recently participated in the Pennsylvania ProStart competition held in State College. Chefs from OJSHS created a tasty threecourse dinner for the judges, and members of the Management Team earned a third-place finish in their event.
“It was awesome for these (students) to go to this particular event
because you saw 400 other students all wearing white chef coats and vying for first place. It validates what we do on campus,” said Darren Hodorovich, culinary/baking and pastry arts instructor. “This is our first year in competing in management. I’m particularly proud of this group. They took the spirit of the competition and followed it through.”
At the event, which was sponsored by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, students from across the
state participated. “It is open to any school that is using ProStart curriculum,” said Hodorovich. “There were teams there from Williamsport and Erie and all over Lancaster and Chester counties.”
OJSHS student chefs volunteered to take part in the cooking competition. “That group of students have been working every day after school for an hour to two hours,” noted Hodorovich. “We start with ideas in November and by the time we get to January, the dishes are set in place.”

from local high schools who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service leadership and patriotism. The students are chosen for the honor by their respective high schools.
This year’s winner from Octorara Junior-Senior High School was Tyler Remphrey, who was honored along with the other Good Citizens during a ceremony held on March 9 at the West Goshen Township Building. Tyler was accompanied to the event by his parents, Byrne and Stacy Remphrey. Jacqueline Smith, Octorara guidance counselor, was also in attendance.
Tyler, who was presented with a certificate and a lapel pin, provided a list of his activities, which were read during the program. He is a member of the high school marching band, the high school Physics Team and the LifeTeen youth group at Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg.

Treehouses, as well as solar- and wind-powered homes, were some of the submissions featured at the 20th annual Build a House … Build a Dream contest presented by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County.
During the competition, held on March 11 at the Church Farm School in Exton, local fifth-grade students worked individually or in teams of two to build their own three-dimensional model dream homes. The model homes were then judged by professional architects,
engineers and builders from the community.
This year, there were a total of 48 homes submitted by 59 students. “The sustainability theme was really prominent this year,” said Christy Kane, Habitat’s director of development and marketing. “In the past years, we saw a few homes with sustainable features. This year, one child not only had solar power, but he also had wind power with turbines that he created on his property. There were some treehouse models, and one kid grew his own grass for his home.”

Tyler, a member of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20, also recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his service project, he created a digital map of the graveyard at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, located in Gap. Using a database that he created, the church leaders can now search for the names of those interred and the location of graves in the cemetery.
Once a student is chosen as the DAR Good Citizen, he or
she is invited to apply for a scholarship at the state DAR level. Part of the application is completing an essay. Students are required to write the essay with no reference materials.
This year’s topic was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How Will the Essential Actions of a Good Citizen - Dependability, Service, Leadership and PatriotismMeet the Challenges That America Faces in This Decade?”
“It’s a timed essay; you have two hours,” Tyler
explained. “(The topic) is in a sealed envelope until the timer starts. There was an option to type, but I handwrote (the essay). I went through each of the four points and gave examples of why it was important.”
During the program, Tyler read his essay, which included an excerpt about the importance of being a good citizen. It read, in part, “An ideal citizen is one who is dedicated to improving the lives of others for the benefit or all. Through the attributes of a good citizen, America will rise and unify
to combat hardship and preserve the values that it was built on.”
The DAR Good Citizen Award, which was established in 1934, was originally bestowed upon only one student per state. By 1952, the award was expanded so that each high school could select one Good Citizen honoree.
The Chester County DAR is open to women age 18 and up who are able to provide proof of their ancestral connection to those who served in the American Revolution. For more information, visit www.ccdar.wordpress.com.

The first course prepared by student chefs was panseared sea scallops served over a roasted red pepper coconut coulis with asparagus medallions and microgreens. The main course was coq au vin that was served over wilted collard greens. Dessert was chipotle chocolate cake with raspberry coulis and a dark chocolate ganache.
Hodorovich noted that the students were required to bring their own equipment and ingredients to the competition. “They have one hour to make a three-course meal, and there is no electricity,” he said. “They use two propane burners and hand tools. They baked the cake using a camper oven, which sat on top of a burner.” Within that hour, students had to prepare the three-course meal in duplicate - one for display and one for the judges.
For the Management Team competition, the students had to come up with a restaurant concept. They chose a premium steakhouse and creamery called the Purple Cow. “ProStart gives us a fictional town … and all sorts of demographics,” Hodorovich
explained. “They had to develop marketing strategies, design the interior of the restaurant, provide sample photos of the menu and sample dishes, develop an organizational chart (and determine) how many employees (would be needed) and how
to secure funding - basically what someone would do to open a restaurant.”
Students were also judged on their critical thinking skills, such as how to respond to a bad restaurant review or a claim that someone became ill from the food that was
served. “These are real-world things that happen all the time. They did exceptionally well,” Hodorovich said, adding that the judges were particularly impressed that the dairy products and meat at the fictional restaurant were procured locally.

Nearly 2,200 homes, businesses and schools in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties are now eligible for fiber broadband, high-speed internet provided by Kinetic.
The service was announced during an event held at the Caernarvon Township Municipal Building in Morgantown, which also included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for fiber broadband. Participants included Pennsylvania Telephone Association president Steven Samara; Lydia Messner, an aide for state Sen. Scott Margin; Kinetic state public affairs vice president Jeanne Shearer; Berks County community and economic development director Pamela ShuppMenet; Twin Valley School District superintendent Patrick Winters; Kinetic
state operations president Susan Schraibman; and Caernarvon Township supervisor Paul Whiteman Sr.
About 900 customers in Berks County, 750 in Chester County and 550 in Lancaster County are now eligible for fiber. That total of nearly 2,200 customers will likely increase to more than 3,100 by this time next year, Kinetic
estimates. Kinetic’s fiberoptic broadband lets users upload and download at up to 1 gigabit per second, or 1,000 megabits a second, providing what is known as “next-generation access.”
The southeastern Pennsylvania fiber project is part of a $2 billion multiyear capital investment strategy to dramatically expand gigabit

the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation upon the population, especially the aging community and those with disabilities, the idea for the Wellness Call program was born.

While there, students learned about Habitat for Humanity of Chester County, which provides affordable housing to qualified families and individuals in need who live or work in Chester County. “We want the kids to know that a home is a luxury that not everyone can afford,” Kane said.
She noted that the contest is a way to introduce Habitat for Humanity to students who are not old enough to become volunteers working at construction sites. She added that youths were very eager to explain their designs to the judges.
“It is the one event where it gives you hope for the future,” said Kane. “These kids are surely going to change the world.”

Genealogy fascinates many people, who explore the subject for a variety of reasons, including learning about their ancestry. When looking into one’s genealogy, a person should keep several tips in mind.
Genealogy and family history are subtly different. Genealogy is a line of descent traced continuously from an ancestor, while family history is defined as the history or narrative of a family. They are intertwined but not synonymous.
Vital records are key. Genealogists explore vital records to obtain information about their ancestors. Vital records include documentation of ancestors’ life events, including births, deaths and marriages. Civil registration began at different times around the world, and even across North America, so it may be challenging, though possible, to develop an accurate history.
Surnames were not commonplace until around the 11th century in Europe, so surnames may be different. Surnames fall into four general categories: place or geographical features, such as Hill; nicknames or appearance, such as Little; occupation, for example, Baker; and father’s name, like Peterson. Some names may have been recorded incorrectly, so a person’s last name actually may be a derivative of the real name or it could be a misspelling. Some immigrants even changed their own surnames to fit in with the culture of the land they were immigrating to.
When searching for records of ancestors, people should also keep in miind that borders and municipalities can change over time. The Family Tree Factbook provides European maps from throughout history and a timeline of
and York, with others to be added over the next few months.
Pennsylvania GBA will offer international business support and global advisory services harnessing expertise from Pennsylvania businesses and universities. It will also work in close collaboration with other international organizations in Pennsylvania. Industries served will include agriculture, finance, health care, life sciences, energy, tourism,
logistics, and higher education.
Pennsylvania GBA’s goal is to be a complementary, B2B source of international information and expertise, leveraging, but not replacing, free and low-cost assistance available from federal, state, and regional trade organizations. The GBA will refer companies to those organizations as well as offering GBA member services where appropriate and useful.
Areas of expertise range from strategic planning and
European border changes, which may help with research.
In addition to uncovering mysteries of one’s heritage, dabbling in genealogy helps to preserve family history by confirming tales and tracing ancestors’ journeys. It also may help shed light on the history of artifacts or jewelry that ancestors owned and passed down.
One motivator behind genealogical research is to uncover relatives. Cousins from all over the world can discover they are related, which may be particularly important to those who were adopted and hope to understand more about where they came from for personal or health-related reasons.
Genealogy is a hobby enjoyed by many people. Through the internet and growing databases of civil records, people can seek to trace their family line.

Pennsylvanians filing their 2022 personal state income taxes can help Pennsylvania’s military personnel, veterans, and their families by donating any amount of their refund to the state’s Military Family Relief Assistance Program (MFRAP) or Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF). Both programs are administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which provides resources and assistance to veterans, military members, and their families in the commonwealth.
Pennsylvanians interested in donating should refer to the 2022 Pennsylvania Personal Income Tax (PA-40) Instruction Booklet, which includes full instructions on how to donate.
The MFRAP helps Pennsylvania service members and their families by providing financial assistance to those with a direct and immediate financial need as a result of circumstances beyond their control. MFRAP grants can provide help to service members for everything from replacing the roof on a home to help paying bills.
Members of the armed
forces who are residents of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for assistance while they are serving on active duty for 30 or more consecutive days with the Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Space Force, or Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard. All members of the armed forces who were discharged for medical reasons are also eligible to apply for assistance up to four years after a medical discharge.
Reserve component service members, including Pennsylvania National Guard members, and their families may be eligible for a grant for a period of up to three years after release from a qualifying active-duty tour. The program also applies to certain family members of eligible service members. Applicants must show that they have a direct and immediate financial need as a result of circumstances beyond their control.
Since the MFRAP began in 2006, individuals have donated a total of more than $2.17 million through private donations
or when filing their Pennsylvania personal income tax returns. In addition to donating when filing taxes, people may contribute at www.donate .dmva.pa.gov; this website also includes information about donating by mail. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent authorized by federal law. To learn more about the MFRAP, visit www.mfrap.pa.gov.
The VTF provides funding to assist and support Pennsylvania veterans and their families. The VTF issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that assist veterans, veterans service organizations, and county directors of veterans affairs. The fund can assist veterans in need of shelter and with the necessities of living.
Since the VTF grant program
began in 2013, a total of $5.33 million has been awarded to organizations across Pennsylvania. The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily donate when applying for or renewing driver’s licenses, photo IDs or motor vehicle registrations; purchasing Honoring Our Veterans standard and motorcycle license plates; or purchasing Honoring our Women Veterans standard license plates. Additionally, private donations can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; mailing information is also available on this site. To learn more about the VTF, visit www.vtf.pa.gov.
For more information about the DMVA, visit www.dmva.pa.gov or www .facebook.com/padmva.
