Driving tractors to school
Octorara students to continue tradition
BY FRANCINE FULTON
In the 1980s, the National Future Farmers of America organization, now called the National FFA Organization, encouraged students to drive their tractors to school as the culmination of the celebration of National FFA Week. Today, that tradition continues.
Locally, the Octorara JuniorSenior High School FFA chapter will present “Drive Your Tractor to School Day” on Friday, April 21. Students are being asked to park their tractors on Highland Road across from the high school between 7 and 8 a.m. Tractors will be judged, and the best overall tractor will win a prize.

“Wehave plenty to do and (always need more) hands to do it,” said Sheila Hershey Williamson when inviting community members to take part in Sew Much Love meetings, held monthly at Parkesburg Mennonite Church. The goal of the sewing ministry is to make handmade items for people in need, including prayer shawls, blankets, pillowcases for hospitalized children and dresses for girls in Africa.
All are welcome to attend the gatherings, which are held on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. in the church’s fellowship hall. Sewers of all experience levels are welcome, as well as those with no experience.
“We have non-sewing projects for people who want to help, but sewing is not their thing,” said Williamson.
“This work would be fleece blankets, and the big push now is knotted comforters. If you can tie a knot, you can do a comforter.”
The knotted comforters are distributed by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. “These comforters are sent all over the world and the United States,” said Williamson, noting that 46,000 comforters were shipped out from MCC last year, 22,000 of which went to Ukraine. “They also distribute food, medical equipment (and other items) to wherever they are needed.”
The Sew Much Love group started by making pillowcases for patients at Penn State Health Center Children’s Hospital in Hershey, which it continues to do. It also teaches people how to sew. “When we first started, Patty (Nafziger), Jane (Rudewick) and I were just

According to Helena Martin, Octorara FFA adviser, the Octorara chapter has held the event in years past, with a break in 2022. “A lot of FFAs around the country still do this,” she stated. “We normally do it during FFA Week, but the weather is not always the best, so we (chose) April before planting season starts when people need their tractors.”
Martin said a variety of tractors have been on display in past years, and the machines are visible from the Octorara Primary Learning Center and the Octorara elementary and intermediate schools. “We have had classic antique tractors and super big modern tractors,” she said. “They park across the street from the high school, so the kids can see them coming in. Everyone slows down to watch. It is something to see.”
The event provides students of all ages an opportunity to see a tractor close up. “Teachers bring their classes over and look at them,” Martin noted. “(Youngsters) see tractors in a field working, but not up close.”

Patti Brennan, chief executive officer of Key Financial Inc., will be inducted into the Chester County Hall of Fame by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) on Wednesday, May 17, at the Phoenixville Foundry, 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville. During the event, which attracts more than 400 business leaders, Brennan will be honored for
her more than 30 years of service to thousands of local businesses and individuals.
Brennan grew up in Newtown Square and has lived in Chester County for almost 35 years since graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in nursing. After working in oncology and as an ICU nurse, she decided to pursue her passion for financial planning.

Brennan started Key Financial in 1990 with a part-time employee who worked from a converted laundry room off the Brennan kitchen. At the time, Brennan was also raising four children.

doing pillowcase (for hospitalized children) at a shop in Ephrata, and it expanded from there,” said Williamson. “Then we encouraged others to dust off their sewing machines and learn how to use them. It’s amazing how
many people bought sewing machines and didn’t know how to sew, so they were put in a closet and forgotten. So we taught them.”
In addition to helping members learn to sew, the group also participates in Little Dresses for Africa, a Christian ministry that provides dresses to girls in need at orphanages, churches and schools in Africa.
Group members use donated material and purchase fabric themselves. Sewing machines are also available at the church during the gatherings.
“What we can’t use we will give to a ReUzit store for resale, and that money goes back into the work of Mennonite Central Committee,”
Williamson noted. Group members emphasized that Sew Much Love is not limited to members of the church. “I look forward to coming because it’s a community of women and it doesn’t matter if you are Mennonite or not. It’s a wonderful thing to experience,” said Judy Lobasso. “I have been coming five or six years now, and I just love it.”
Parkesburg Mennonite Church is located at 44 E. Second Ave., Parkesburg. Anyone interested in taking part in the group may attend the next scheduled meeting on Saturday, May 13. For more information, contact the church office at 610-857-3761

Those who would like to view the winning entries in the 2023 Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) Photography Contest are invited to visit the Atglen Public Library (APL), 121 Main St., where the photos will be on display through the end of April. The traveling display will then move to the Oxford Library Company, 48 S. Second St.
The results of the photography contest were announced during the OWA’s annual membership meeting held on March 23 at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, Quarryville.
Approximately 60 people attended the event, where the Patrick Fasano Photography
Contest results were announced and displayed. “(Fasano) was a valued member of the Octorara Watershed Association, and he passed away two years ago,” noted Chotty Sprenkle, OWA contest organizer. “We have dedicated this photo contest in his memory in perpetuity.”
The OWA received more than 30 photographs, entered by 15 participants. The photographs were judged by professional photographer Shelli McKenna of McKenna Moments Photography, Gap.
“The photos captured the scenic landscapes, wildlife and agriculture activities that make the Octoraro watershed so special,” said Sprenkle at the event.
She noted that the Trailcam entries are always noteworthy. This year, a coyote was captured on the camera of Rupert Rossetti from Port Deposit, Md.
As part of the annual contest, amateur photographers were invited to submit photos taken in the watershed area. Photos were entered and judged in four categories: Wildlife, Landscapes, Trailcam and, new this year, Agriculture.
A Best of Show honor is also awarded. This year, that honor was presented to Anita
Bower of Nottingham.
The following were the contest winners in the Wildlife category: Mona Steinhauer, Lancaster, first place; Donna McCool, Cochranville, second place; and Leah Kline, Kirkwood, third place. Winners in the Landscapes

According to www.ffa.org, the organization prepares students for careers in the agriculture industry by providing them with hands-on experiences and opportunities to develop their leadership skills. FFA also welcomes those who plan future careers as teachers, scientists, business owners and more.
The name of the organization was updated in 1988 after a vote by national convention delegates to reflect new career opportunities in agriculture. “We have approximately 50 members,” Martin said. “(FFA) gets kids to understand it’s not just about farming.”
FFA members participate in the FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) program, which is designed to help them gain real-world experience. SAE projects can include raising livestock,
growing crops or starting a business such as dog walking or lawn care.
“Two years ago (on Drive Your Tractor to School Day), two ag mechanic students (drove in) tractors they bought themselves. They had these old John Deeres that they worked on, so for those kids, it tied in with their classroom curriculum,” said Martin. “Every FFA student has to have an SAE project. For their project, they restored tractors.”
Martin encourages local residents to check out the tractor display on April 21.
“(Drivers should) leave themselves plenty of time in case they get stuck behind a tractor,” she said with a smile.

Community invited to help pack meals
Grace Covenant Church, in partnership with Lifeline Christian Mission, will host a community-wide event on Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to address global food insecurity. The church is inviting area residents to help pack 50,000 shelf-ready meals that will be shipped to areas in the world where children and families suffer from malnutrition.
Volunteers may sign up for one or more one-and-a-half-hour time slots to pack. There is no cost to participate.
In addition to seeking volunteers to pack meals, the church is also seeking tax-deductible financial contributions to help underwrite
the cost of the ingredients. There is no minimum level of support that can be made. All contributions are taxdeductible and will be used only to cover the cost of ingredients. For more information, visit www.grace covenantepc.org/give.
The meal-packing event combines an opportunity for team building and community service. The church encourages company volunteers to sign up together, form teams, wear company logos and participate in friendly competition with other teams to achieve the goal of packing 50,000 meals.
Grace Covenant Church is located in the Oaklands Corporate Center at 444 Creamery Way, Suite 100, Exton. For more information about the meal-packing event, contact organizer Tom Johnson at tjohnson@grace covenantepc.org.
