Ladies invited to benefit tea, auction
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“Like a traditional tea, tiered plates will hold the tea sandwiches and desserts. It’s all fancy and girly,” said Jennie Straub, executive director, when describing the 13th annual Ladies’ Tea and Auction that is being hosted by Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone. The event will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Linville Hill Elementary School,
295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise, Registration will open at 9:30 a.m., and activities will begin at 10 a.m.
All proceeds will benefit the center, which educates and supports women facing unplanned pregnancies. “We will give an update on what we do as a ministry and the new things that are happening at the ministry,” said Straub. “Then, we will go into a traditional ladies’ high tea.”

Gray noted that all student team members work on problem solving together. “I coach them, but it is their idea,” she stated. “They all have to do the presentation, (and) they all have to help with the building. It is a team approach. There is not necessarily a leader. They collaborate throughout the whole process.”

In November of 2022, Community Courier readers were introduced to Nicholas Madrigale of Atglen, who was in need of a heart transplant.
Today, Madrigale, who turned 32 on April 19, not only has a new heart, but he is also home recuperating with his family. “I am sore and not as strong physically, but I have moments when I (realize) I never felt this good before,” he said.
The surgery took place at the University of Pennsylvania in
Philadelphia, where Madrigale had been a patient for 95 days waiting for a donor heart. “In December 2022 they did a heart catheterization. They noted that my levels were not stable enough to go home, and they implanted an Impella heart pump,” he explained. “I was hooked up to a machine that assisted my heart in pumping. You cannot leave the hospital with that.”
He received his new heart on April 1. “The organ procurement center called me on Saturday morning at 2 a.m. and told me it would happen that day. I went in (for

Madrigale returned home on April 12 to his girlfriend, Danielle Hayes, and their four children. He is now able to breathe easier and enjoy a good night’s sleep. “I
am trying to figure out the best way to put it into words. It’s a new lease on life,” he shared. “I am lucky enough to be home and recovering.”
Madrigale hopes to someday meet the family members of the organ donor, but that decision would be up to them. “There is a process from the organ center. I know (the heart) came from Kentucky,” he said. “You can write a letter and it goes to a third party, and they send the information to the donor family and it’s up to them to respond. This person is now a part of me, (but) it’s up to them. I will accept what they decide.”
Madrigale is already thinking about returning to work. “In the next two or three months, I will eventually be cleared for cardiac

West Chester University (WCU), West Chester, has earned the 2023-24 Military Friendly School designation, maintaining Gold status in recognition of leading practices, outcomes, and effective programs for members of the military and veterans enrolled at the university. Military Friendly is a standard that measures an organization’s commitment to, efforts toward, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefit for the military community.
More than 1,800 schools sought the Military Friendly designation by participating in the 2023-24 proprietary survey. Institutions were also evaluated using public data sources. Of the 530 institutions that earned the general designation, only 250 nationally were selected for Gold award status, which is reserved for schools that scored within
10% of the 10th ranking school in their category.
WCU strives to create an intentional culture of understanding, acceptance, and success for veterans, active military members, National Guard service members, and those who support them. Services and
resources for members of the military and veterans at WCU are centralized through the Greg and Sandra Weisenstein Veterans Center, thanks to the endeavors of WCU leadership, the WCU Foundation, and the WCU Veterans Center team.

Menu items, which will be prepared by Hillary Prickett from The Salted Apron, will include homemade scones with lemon curd and jellies, quiche, finger sandwiches and desserts.
A highlight of the evening each year is the table decorations. “Individual hostesses volunteer to decorate a table, and they invite their friends to sit at their table,” explained Straub, noting that prizes are awarded to the top three tables. “The tables are beautiful; these people are so creative.”
Last year, one of the tables featured a baby theme, and each napkin was folded into the shape of a diaper. Another table included a plant in a teacup for each of the guests. Some table hostesses bring their own teapots and cups and
bake individualized cookies.
In addition to the food, the fundraiser will include a live auction. Among the items on the auction block will be tickets to Sight & Sound, a weekend getaway at a beach property, dinner vouchers and tickets to Longwood Gardens. “We get donations from the community like floral
arrangements, wreaths and gift certificates (to local businesses),” said Straub. “We go to a local auction and buy potted flowers and hanging plants, and we auction those off as well.”
Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone is located at 5380 Lincoln Highway, Gap. The facility offers medical quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound service to confirm viable pregnancies. For more information, to host a table or to purchase tickets for the tea, visit www.pregnancyresources.org or contact event coordinator Kristi Martin at kri@pregnancy resources.org or 717-4428694. The tea is open to women age 18 and older. Tickets will be available at the door.

St. John’s Episcopal Church at Compass, 1520 W. Kings Highway, Gap, will hold two special services. A National Day of Prayer ecumenical service will take place on Thursday, May 4, at 7 p.m., and an Eastertide Taizé service of worship and prayer will be held on Saturday, May 6, at 4 p.m.

The Veterans Center team has facilitated communication among campus offices so that student veterans and their families enjoy a coordinated system of service and a meaningful transition from the military to the university. The Weisenstein Endowment has been established to provide annual support in scholarships and programming for WCU student veterans. Staff includes a licensed professional counselor dedicated specifically to the specialized needs of WCU’s student veteran population. In addition, faculty and staff across the university demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting and engaging student veterans. The Veterans Center is part of WCU’s Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
The Veterans Center also offers student veterans spaces to meet formally, study, relax, recharge, and socialize, plus resources and events that connect veterans at WCU with those in the local community. To learn more, visit www.wcupa.edu/veteranscenter.
The complete 2023-2024 Military Friendly Schools list will be published in the May issue of “G.I. Jobs” magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.
