“A Touch Of Country” Fundraiser To Feature McGraw Tribute Artist Max Armstrong, the youngest of five children, grew up in a tightly knit family that became the Armstrong Family Singers. They were blessed to have the opportunity to tour throughout the United States and cut an album in 1976. When Tim McGraw first appeared on the country stage in 1994, many people approached Armstrong and told him how much he looked like the new country star. Armstrong put together his looks, his ability to sing, and his love for people and entertainment and became “McGraw to the Max,” a Tim McGraw tribute artist. CCYO from pg 1 Members of the Chester County Youth Orchestra (CCYO) will present their 25th anniversary concert on Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 10 W. Pleasant Grove Road, West Chester. Under the direction of Katrina Kelly and Mark Cellini, the orchestra will perform music from its inaugural season, including Overture to “The Magic Flute” by Mozart, Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 “Unfinished,” the “William Tell Overture” by Rossini, and “Peter and the Wolf ” by Prokofiev. State Sen. Andy Dinniman will be a special guest narrator for “Peter and the Wolf.” CCYO, sponsored by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, provides an opportunity for students in grades six to 12 to enjoy playing music with a full symphony orchestra and allows them to meet fellow musicians from school districts across Chester County and in nearby areas. Students are accepted by audition only. CCYO is dedicated to giving young musicians the chance to grow musically by performing challenging works from the standard orchestral literature, as well as music from the cinema and the Broadway stage. The students work on their performance skills and learn a wide variety of music. As members of the CCYO, students gain experience playing music of many different composers, styles and time periods. CCYO is seeking musically talented students ages 11 to 18 to participate. Audition dates for all instruments are posted at www.facebook.com/ccyorch. Tickets for the upcoming concert will be available at the door. There will be separate prices for adults and students, and a family rate will be available. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit Safe Harbor of Chester County, a nonprofit organization that provides housing, food and services to homeless single men and women in Chester County. CCYO student musicians recently helped cook meals for residents at Safe Harbor, which is CCYO’s charitable partner for 2018-19. Pictured on front:

However, membership is not required to enjoy programming, breakfast and lunch. Meal reservations are required by contacting the senior center five days in advance at 610383-6900. The CASC serves the communities of Coatesville, Atglen, Elverson, Honey Brook Borough and Township, Modena, Parkesburg, South Coatesville and Thorndale, as well as Wallace, Caln, West Caln, East Fallowfield and Valley townships. “CASC serves 14 municipalities around the city of Coatesville and is open to (people) age 50 and better,” said Pierce. Pierce pointed out that many members use Rover Transportation to travel to the center, while about 10 percent of members are within walking distance. Regularly scheduled CASC programs include a craft club, a chess club, a culinary club and a knitting/crocheting club

called Knit Knots. Exercise programs are also offered, including Zumba, yoga and line dancing. Pierce said that in addition to recreational activities, senior centers have a responsibility to older adults to offer educational and informative programs as well. For example, as part of CASC’s Lunch and Learn program, a talk will be offered about older adults raising their own grandchildren on Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. “The senior center has a place in the larger community conversation about things that are going on around us that affect the aging population,” he said. “We want to set the stage by having experts (available) in the field of aging.”

“We are so much more than bingo,” said Bill Pierce, executive director of the Coatesville Area Senior Center (CASC), when describing all of the events and classes that are currently being offered at the facility. Programs in May will include a talk on nutrition, a technology class, a Cinco de Mayo party and a Mother’s Day Tea Party. CASC, which is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is located in the former CareerLink building at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Harmony Street), Coatesville. The facility opened in September 2016 at its current location after being housed at 22 N. Fifth St. in Coatesville for more than 20 years. Spearheading the new programming is George Ramon, the program and activities director and assistant executive director, who began working at the center in December of 2018. His visible presence and interaction with the seniors have helped make CASC a popular place for seniors to spend time. “You can come in, eat, hang, grab a cup of coffee and make a friend,” said Ramon. “What’s nice is that people have direct access to me, so if they are interested in doing (a program), we will put it on the schedule.” Pierce said that Ramon’s enthusiasm and the wide selection of programming have made the senior center grow and thrive since its relocation. “Not long after we moved in here, we averaged 15 to 20

More than 200 Farm Bureau members visited more than 1,460 classrooms and reached approximately 36,000 students in 54 counties during the third annual celebration of Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week, held March 18 to 22. The foundation selected the book “Right This Very Minute” by Lisl H. Detlefsen, a table-to-farm book about food and

The Department of Environmental Protection provided program funding for the purchase of supplies and encouraged individual waste facilities participation. PennDOT supported the initiative by utilizing its network of 7,500 AAH groups to promote and encourage participation in the Great American Cleanup of PA and distributed bags, gloves, and safety vests to all registered participants through its 67 county maintenance facilities throughout the state. in Quarryville, Armstrong met Carol Fanelli, founder of the nonprofit organization We’re All God’s Children (WAGC). Fanelli had been searching for a fun and engaging way to raise funds for the ministry. “When I saw how much Max resembled Tim McGraw and that he actually performed as a tribute artist, it gave me an idea for something different that would appeal to the local community,” Fanelli said. That thought eventually led to “A Touch of Country,” a dinner and concert event to be held at the Hoffman Building, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, on Saturday, May 11. “I wanted to help out and be a part of (WAGC’s) mission,” Armstrong remarked. Founded in 2005, WAGC offers short-term mission trips to those seeking to serve others. Volunteers have traveled to Appalachia and Native American reservations, as well as Kenya, Zambia, Haiti, and El Salvador. WAGC partners with individuals and organizations that are already working in their own communities to improve the lives of those living in poverty. WAGC’s purpose is to come alongside them and support them in these efforts to bring hope to the hurting with dignity and respect. WAGC aims to give a “hand up,” not a “hand out.” While one goal is to help those who are unable to help themselves due to economic, educational, or medical hardships, a second, equally important goal is to offer volunteers opportunities to grow their faith and share their blessings with others. The doors of the Hoffman Building will open for “A Touch of Country” at 5:15 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Guests will be treated to pulled pork barbecue, boneless smoked chicken, potato salad, pasta

salad, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese. Locally made pies and ice cream will be served for dessert. Dinner will be followed by a short presentation on WAGC’s ministry. At 7:30 p.m., Armstrong will take the stage to perform the music of Tim McGraw. The full concert will feature such tunes as “Don’t Take the Girl,” “I Like It, I Love It,” “If You’re Reading This,” “Down on the Farm,” “It’s Your Love,” and others. Guests are encouraged to wear their dancing boots. Photos with Armstrong will be available for a donation, and compact disc recordings will be offered for sale. Tickets are required for admission and may be purchased at Groff’s Printing, 22 E. State St., Quarryville. The earlier tickets are purchased, the closer guests will be to the stage. All proceeds will benefit WAGC’s ministry. Three mission trips are planned for this summer, and volunteers are still being accepted. One team will work on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota from Saturday, July 20, to Sunday, July 28, leading fun and educational workshops for children and teenagers. A second team will visit El Salvador from Sunday, Aug. 4, to Saturday, Aug. 10, running soccer clinics and Bible studies for youths of all ages. The third team will host free vision clinics and share Bible lessons in several rural villages in Zambia, Africa, from Friday, Aug. 2, to Saturday, Aug. 17. For information about the trips, readers may visit www.wereallgodschildren.org. To learn more about “A Touch of Country” or purchase tickets, folks may visit www.wereallgods children.org/buy-tickets or call Fanelli at 717-278-0979.

“That is part of why I like the league so much. You meet such a variety of people,” said league member Stephanie Eldreth. One feature that appeals to some members is the fact that the league is for women only. “At the course, there are no men on the front nine when we’re playing. The lack of men just makes it ... a little bit more relaxed because they tend to drive the ball farther. We make it women-friendly,” Bitner said. “Some of the better players choose to go off to the back nine, which is more challenging. They certainly can do that, too.” Golf instruction is available for those who need help mastering the basics or for golfers who want to improve their game. The league also has occasional mini clinics with a pro, as well as games and challenges to make the round of golf more interesting. “We mix it up and have fun,” Bitner said. “Scorekeeping is optional, though this year we’re going to try to teach the girls a little about keeping score and getting a handicap if they’re interested.” There is a registration fee for the league, which covers the cost of the end-of-season banquet, prizes and other expenses. Weekly “Did You Know?” emails are sent to members, with information on golf rules, etiquette and facts. Everyone must bring their own equipment. Golfers also pay their green fees and cart rental fees each time they play. For those who are not sure they would like to join the league, there is the option to join as an “occasional player.” Occasional players do not pay the league registration fee and are not eligible for awards or giveaways. They may attend the year-end banquet if they pay for the meal. information,” noted Halitsky. “People always tend to ask questions because they want to learn more and be responsible toward the environment.” Proceeds from the sale will benefit the 1756 Uwchlan Meeting House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. “The plant sale on May 4 is basically done by the Garden Class, which is part of the Woman’s (Community Club of Uwchlan). The Woman’s Club holds the Christmas plant sale,” explained Halitsky. “Any money we make goes toward upkeep of the building. It is our home, and we want to keep our home (in good condition). It takes a lot to keep it updated, and we work

together for that.” Halitsky noted that preparation for the sale begins a few weeks in advance. “We’ve been potting plants at the meeting house,” she noted. “Then everything ramps up. The week of the sale we are there every day setting up, cleaning pots and organizing. It’s not a one-day (event for club members).” She added that this spring, plants have been plentiful, unlike last March and April, when unexpected cold temperatures and even snow were local issues. “Last year everything was coming up late. This year, everything is coming up, so we are excited,” Halitsky said. For more information about the plant sale, readers may visit www.uwchlangardenclass.org or search for “Garden Class of the Woman’s Community Club of Uwchlan” on Facebook.

Members of the Garden Class of the Woman’s Community Club of Uwchlan will hold their annual plant sale on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Uwchlan Meeting House, located at 5 N. Village Ave., Lionville. GPS users should enter Exton instead of Lionville. Offered for sale will be member-grown perennials, shrubs, trees, herbs, vegetables, annuals and more. “The majority of the plants we have are from the members - mostly perennials from their own yards,” said garden class member Pam Halitsky. “There will be a lot of plants to choose from. Everything will be labeled.” She said that the club is currently promoting the use of native plants. “We will have quite a few native plants,” noted Halitsky. “We want to get people educated as far as planting more native plants for the bees, butterflies and birds.” Trees native to the area include white dogwood, shagbark, birch, hickory, white ash, persimmon, winterberry and pawpaw. “(We will also have) native plants like milkweed. They are good for the bees,” Halitsky stated. She said that an information table will be set up at the event where visitors can learn about native plants for pollinators. “We will have a couple of members who will man that table. People

PREMIUM BARK MULCH All Natural - Double & Triple Ground Bark Mulch Black Dyed Mulch - Wood Chips

The plant sale sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. until sold out at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This year, items for sale will include “plants of merit” selected by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, Mt. Cuba, Penn State Flower Trials, Perennial Plant Association

and Ohio State. Another feature this year will be planting designs and prepacked groups of plants for mailbox, pollinator, and container gardens. The sale will also include numerous varieties of native plants, plants for sun, plants for shade, pollinators, perennials, and annuals. As in years past, there will also be hundreds of plants grown by Master Gardeners. Selected tomato

and pepper varieties grown from seed by Master Gardeners will be available as well. The Garden Shed will feature gently used garden tools, containers, and accessories. Although the plant sale will open its doors at 8 a.m., the Garden Shed will open at 7:30 a.m. Soil test kits and an information desk where people may ask garden questions will also be part of the event.

Payment with cash and checks is preferred, but credit card payments will be accepted. Presented by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County, the sale supports the group’s many programs offered to the community, including a Garden Hotline, demonstration gardens, and youth garden programs. Albert from pg 1

Lucky Dawg decided to have him transported to Pennsylvania. “We said, ‘Let’s get this dog up here,’” said Bauer. “He needed the right rescue and the right setting for him to thrive.” She noted that Albert’s wheelchair, also known as a wheelie cart, was

donated by Rescue Rollers in Ohio. Albert was examined by the rescue vet and by a neurologist. Through diagnostic testing they were able to determine that Albert suffered at least one lumbar spinal fracture, most likely from trauma. This has caused paralysis from mid-back down. Unfortunately, since it is not a recent fracture, surgical intervention is not an option. Albert is not in pain, and he is expected to grow and flourish as any other dog. Albert is now about 5 months old and weighs 35 pounds. “We think, but we don’t know for sure, that he is a Lab/hound mix,” Bauer noted. Those interested in adopting Albert may email lucky dawgar@gmail.com or fill out an application at www.luckydawg animalrescue.com. “We want to make sure he goes to the appropriate adopter who wants to care for his special needs,” Bauer said. Donations are also being

accepted for Albert’s care and to finance the cost of a new wheelie cart that he will need as he grows. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill, all-volunteer organization. The organization relies on volunteers to foster pets until forever homes can be found. Some cats that have been rescued by the organization but are not in foster care can be adopted from Pet Valu stores, including the ones at 144 Eagleview Blvd. in Lionville; at 408 Commons Drive, Parkesburg; and at 215 Lancaster Ave., Frazer. Bauer said the organization’s biggest need is for foster families for both cats and dogs. Foster families must complete an application, provide veterinarian references and take part in a home visit. Food, a crate and veterinarian care are provided. Those interested in fostering may visit www.luckydawganimal rescue.com for more details.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition -

The second annual “Loving Our Earth Expo,” featuring a plant sale, topical lectures, vendors, a gardening roundtable discussion and more, will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1105 E. Lincoln Highway (Business Route 30), Exton. The event will take place rain or shine. Admission and parking will be free. While registration is preferred, it is not required. The first 300 guests who register in advance will receive a free reusable tote bag. Registration for the expo is available at www.eventbrite.com. St. Paul’s is the site of a community garden, where a plant sale and open house have been held annually in the spring. Last year, other activities were incorporated into the event for the

first time in addition to the regular sale of plants and herbs. “We ended up with 250 to 300 people (in attendance),” noted garden manager Steve Choc. “We didn’t know what to expect, and we planned big. This year, we have a more intimate layout and we are focusing on connecting people together and sharing ideas, as well as offering an opportunity for people to connect with vendors and (gather) information. We’re doing a more formal schedule as well.” The day’s schedule will include a talk by Kathy Herring, a representative from C-Change Conversations, at 10:30 a.m. “C-Change is a climate change information group that gives science-based, nonpartisan information to the public about the impacts of climate change,” Choc explained. be booths by environmental educators, local farms, energy suppliers and crafters. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. A yoga and Qigong class will be offered at 9 a.m. “Qigong is an Asian form of martial arts. It is similar to standing meditation like tai chi,” Choc explained. The community garden was established at St. Paul’s in the spring of 2010. “ We donate over a 1,000 pounds of food a year, primarily to the Chester County Food Bank,” Choc reported, noting that additional food is given to the West Chester Food Cupboard, the Salvation Army of Coatesville and other organizations. “We also grow herbs in bulk and take them to the Broad Street Mission in Philadelphia,” Choc added. “They use bushels of herbs at a time; it is a way to share our bounty.” He noted that garden beds are currently available to rent for community members who want to grow their own produce. Tours of the garden will be offered during the expo, and visitors will also be able to view the garden’s beehives and compost site. The expo is being sponsored by the Bradshaw-Knight Foundation, which presents grants to organizations that focus on land conservation, land stewardship, organic agriculture and more. official phone number of the business agency the caller claims to represent. People should never reveal personal data to any stranger that calls them. Social Security employees do occasionally contact people - generally those who have ongoing business with the agency - by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and people should not engage with the caller. If a person receives these calls, he or she should report the information to the OIG Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271 or at https://oig.ssa.gov/report. The SSA’s message to the public is that anyone who receives a questionable call claiming to be from SSA or the OIG should just hang up. The new PSA addressing the telephone impersonation scheme is available at www.youtube.com/socialsecurity.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) and its Office of the Inspector General (OIG) launched a joint public service nnouncement (PSA) campaign addressing a nationwide telephone impersonation scheme. SSA and the OIG continue to receive reports from across the country about fraudulent phone calls from people falsely claiming to be Social Security employees. Calls can even “spoof” Social Security’s national customer service number as the incoming number on the caller ID. The new PSAs will air on TV and radio stations across the country to alert the public to remain vigilant against potential fraud. The public is urged to always be cautious and to avoid providing sensitive information such as their Social Security number or bank account information to unknown people over the phone or internet. Readers should be extra careful about unexpected phone calls. If a call is received, individuals can take the caller’s information, hang up, and contact the
