Octorara Junior-Senior High School’s seventh annual OABEST Expo will highlight the fine work being done by students alongside community groups and more. Fun and entertainment will fill the day, while visitors learn more about the possibilities available to local students. Set for Saturday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., OABEST, which stands for Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental, Science and Technology, will take place on the Octorara School District campus at 226 Highland Road, Atglen.
Featured at the OABEST Expo will be food vendors, first responder demonstrations, crafts, live music, games, hayrides and many fun-filled activities. Event organizer Lisa McNamara, K-12 program administrator, said the event has grown from a small school activity to a communitywide activity. “It started off in one little hallway up by our ag tech wing. The main purpose back then was to emphasize the agriculture industry,” she said. “Last year, we brought in about 1,500 people. It has expanded to the outside, and it takes the whole high school campus. We have over 30 vendors. It’s a K-12 community See OABEST Expo pg 2

The school district offers 11 in-house career and technical education programs, which will all have demonstrations and displays set up. Students from the various career pathways are part of an advisory committee, which helps organize the event. “I think it’s a great way to get the community involved in what we do and see what we can do to benefit our community,” said senior Makayla Roccia, who is in the district’s business marketing program and a member of the advisory committee. 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing dance and theater separately,” said Mackenzie Neff. “Getting to do theater with dancing is kind of a dream. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.” Kolby Colmary, a veteran of several Servant Stage shows, noted that he loves that the show goes to nursing homes to reach people who cannot come to the theater. Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,”

the present and cover genres from rock to pop to Broadway with a special emphasis on the music of the 1980s thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March

Book lovers of all ages are invited to “take a book and bring a book” at the new book depository that was recently installed at Layton Park in Wagontown. The book depository, which features separate shelves for books for children and adults, was built by Barbara Goodman, an administrative assistant at West Caln Township. The unit was installed by township workers at Pavilion 1 in the park.
Goodman said she has seen similar book exchanges in the area and thought building a box would be a good way to share her own books, as well as children’s books. “I contacted the Parks and Rec Committee and asked if it was OK to do,” said Goodman. “I have hundreds of books and I have a grandson, so I have a whole bunch of little kids’ books. I wanted to pass them on.” She said the box, which is made of pine, took several days to complete.
West Caln Township administrative assistant Barbara Goodman (left) constructed a book depository in Layton Park where area residents can take or donate a book. Those who recently chose books to take home were (continuing from left) Pierce, Julie and Sawyer Neilson.
She noted that because the box is located under a pavilion, it will be protected from the weather. Anyone can participate in the book exchange, not just residents of West Caln. Goodman said that despite the fact that many people use e-readers, nothing compares to reading an actual book. “I have to read a book,” she said, noting that she reads mostly fiction and her favorites include works by author Brad Thor and Ruth Rendell, who writes “Inspector Wexford” mysteries.
Members of the Parks and Recreation Committee are grateful for Goodman’s efforts. “(We thank) Barbara for all of her hard work and efforts in this project,” said committee member Stan Sarmento, who describes Layton Park as “one of the most beautiful parks in Chester County.” Layton Park is located on Route 340 in Wagontown. For GPS users, the address is 100 Water Works Road, Coatesville.

remaining in their dens, which can be rock caverns; excavated holes beneath shrubs, trees, or deadfalls; hollow trees; or nests built on the ground. In Pennsylvania, bears mate primarily from early June to midJuly, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Female bears give birth in January to litters of one to five cubs. The newborn cubs are blind, toothless, and covered with short, fine hair. Cubs begin nursing immediately after birth and are groomed and cared for daily by their mother. They grow from as light as 10 ounces at birth to as many as 10 pounds by the time they leave the den in early April. While Dinniman said he
enjoyed the rare opportunity to see the bears up close, he warned the public that this was only done in a controlled situation under the guidance and care of professionals. Dinniman cautioned the public not to get close to bears in the wild. He advised that, should individuals encounter a bear or bear cub in the wild, they should adhere to advice given by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which is to alert the bear, get back, stay calm, and pay attention. Bears often will detect humans first and leave the area before humans see them. For more information on bears and bear safety tips, readers may visit www.pgc.pa.gov.
Black bear cubs were present during a recent visit to State Gamelands 108 by wildlife conservation professionals from the Pennsylvania Game Commission and their guests. According to the Game Commission, cubs are playful, regularly romping and wrestling with their littermates. They learn by watching their mother and imitating her.

animals, including ducks, geese, and elk. Statewide, there are around 75 female bears with radio collars. Game Commission biologists and veterinarians pinpoint the location of bear dens through the radio signal and sedate the mother bear when they visit a den. They then conduct a health assessment of the bear that includes taking blood samples, checking the bear’s teeth and skin, and adjusting the bear’s radio collar as needed to allow room for growth. The cubs also receive health assessments. Dinniman had the opportunity to hold a young cub but had to do so with care due to its large, sharp claws. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, although three species of bears inhabit North America, only the black bear is found in Pennsylvania. Despite their common name, black bears are not always black. They may be cinnamon or, even rarer, blond. Many bears have a white blaze or “V” on their chest. Adult black bears usually weigh about 200 pounds, but males can be as much as 600 pounds or more. They measure about three feet high when on all fours or about five to seven feet tall when standing upright. They may live up to 25 years in the wild, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Bears are usually dormant in winter,

at St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter for Homeless Families in Phoenixville, at the W.C. Atkinson Memorial Service Center’s shelter and transitional apartments in Coatesville and at “The Farm,” a facility located in Sadsbury Township and operated by City Gate Mission of Coatesville for men transitioning from prison. At Mission Relief Services, Coatesville, volunteers packed surgical and medical supplies for redistribution to developing countries. Volunteers also packaged supplies at the Narenj Tree Foundation in Norristown. The supplies will be distributed to refugee camps and displaced communities around the world. One team of volunteers painted stairways in the women’s shelter facility at the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville, and another group of volunteers organized and labeled supplies that are kept for the shelter residents at Safe
Harbor in West Chester. These locations were also served during last year’s Day of Hope. “Initially, we picked these sites because we have an affinity for Coatesville. Our synagogue was founded there 100 years ago,” Barnett said. “This year, we went back to those same groups, but wanted to do more and expand our area (of service).” The idea to form an IAC was conceived after Beth Israel organized and hosted the first Unity Shabbat in January 2017. Other local congregations, such as St. Matthew’s and St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran churches, had also been promoting interfaith education by hosting guest speakers from other faiths. They joined with Beth Israel, the Islamic Society of Chester County (ISCC) and St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church to plan a breaking of the Ramadan fast in June 2017. More than 150 people of various faiths joined together for prayers, discussion and

Spring Fling from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
Working to organize the Pequea Valley Education Foundation Spring Fling, which will be held at Pequea Valley High School on May 17 from 4 to 8 p.m., are (from left) Grace Martin, Kolby Bills, Megan Yoder, and Hope Fisher.
R038298
“The night is free except for food,” said Amanda Howe, who is advising the student committee organizing the 2019 Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF) Spring Fling. “Any funds that are made are used to help fund next year’s Spring Fling,” she added. According to Grace Martin, one of the student coordinators of Spring Fling, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness and foster goodwill between the school and the Pequea Valley area. “The ultimate goal of Spring Fling is to bring the community together,” Martin said. “We want to bring the community to our school and for our school to be involved in the community.” The third annual PVEF Spring Fling will be held at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Friday, May 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. The family-oriented event will include a chicken barbecue, local food vendors, free carnival games, a dunk tank, and a 75-foot inflatable obstacle course for children. Local vendors selling soft pretzels and giving away ice cream will be located in the parking lot at the front of the building. Nominally priced meal deals will be sold at the football stadium concession stand. Chicken barbecue dinners will be available for pickup from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. or until the chicken is sold out. Each dinner will include chicken, a roll, a baked potato, a beverage, and dessert. Buckets of five pieces of chicken will be available for purchase as well. Martin noted that as in the past, school clubs and local businesses, along with a few area churches, will set up displays and carnival games on tables in the school football stadium. Among the many carnival games and activities that will be available for attendees to experience will be a dunk tank, face painting, a hungry hippo game, a gaga pit, a 75-foot inflatable obstacle course for children, and a zip line. In addition, a candy drop from a fire truck will be held. Howe said that both area and national businesses with locations in or near Pequea Valley School District have contributed items for prizes or supplies for the event. The event will be held rain or shine. In 2018, the weather was not conducive to holding Spring Fling outside and the entire event was held in the school. More than 700 community members attended. “It was still a fun atmosphere,” said Kolby Bills, one of the student coordinators. “We improvised,” added Martin. “It was a lot of fun.” Bills said that the organizers hope this year’s event is just a little better than the previous Spring Flings held at the school. “Each year, we hope to add a bit more to make it better and different,” he noted. Readers who would like more information may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on “Spring Fling” under the Community Partnerships tab. Individuals who have questions may call 717-768-5510, ext. 5508, or email amanda _howe@pequeavalley.org. Pictured on front:

for the students,” Cellini said. “We are very respectful of individual family schedules, and we strive to keep CCYO commitments - with the exception of concerts, of course - to Wednesday evenings.” In addition to performing concerts, students take part in social activities. “We try to schedule a few events during the year completely separate from music,” Cellini noted. “Some highlights include doing an escape room as well as an afternoon of bowling.” In addition, CCYO chooses a local nonprofit to benefit each year, and the students take part in a service project
relating to that organization. “This year, CCYO is proud to benefit Safe Harbor of Chester County,” Cellini said. “CCYO students came together to cook a meal for the residents, and a few students visited the shelter and helped to serve the meal.” For more information about the CCYO, readers may visit www.ccyo.org or www.facebook.com/ccyorch or email info@ccyo.org. Local student musicians are invited to try out for a place in the Chester County Youth Orchestra (CCYO). CCYO will hold its spring new member auditions on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), 455 Boot Road, Downingtown. The CCYO, which is sponsored by the CCIU, is open to youths ages 12 to 18. Openings are available in all sections, but there is a particular need for those who play the flute, percussion, cello, bass and all brass instruments. Students should be prepared to play major scales and a prepared solo, and they will be asked to do a sight reading. Auditions are by appointment only. For more information and to schedule an audition, individuals may visit www.ccyo.org/auditions. The audition process will last approximately 10 minutes. “Students should bring their own instruments to the audition,” noted Mark Cellini, who directs the orchestra along with Katrina Kelly. “The only exception to this
would be percussionists, who can contact us to discuss instrument needs for their auditions.” He noted that most members of the orchestra are part of their own school musical groups. “While CCYO does not require students to participate in their own school band or orchestra programs, we highly encourage their participation,” Cellini stated. “There is also no requirement for studying privately; however, an overwhelming majority of those students accepted into CCYO do so.” CCYO offers students an opportunity to enjoy playing in a symphony orchestra along with musicians from Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. This year, the CCYO marked its 25th anniversary year with a concert on May 11. “Students in CCYO come from all over Chester County, as well as a few students from neighboring counties,” Cellini said. “There are no geographic restrictions for participating in CCYO. Any student who wants to participate is welcome to audition.” He noted that participating students are asked to pay a yearly tuition fee. Cellini emphasized that even though the students come from different schools and backgrounds, they are able to form a cohesive musical unit. “This is one of the best parts of participating in CCYO,” he said. “Because students are coming together from different school music programs, they are all in the same boat of being out of their comfort zone. Students form close bonds with one another across school lines, and the musical experience is enhanced because of this.” He added that many students in CCYO also spend time together outside of CCYO activities. Members of the CCYO rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from September through May at Peirce Middle School, West Chester. “It can sometimes be a challenge to rehearse during the middle of the week, but we strive to make the rehearsal experience an enjoyable and educational experience

latches on low drawers and cabinets, especially those beneath sinks where potentially harmful cleaning products are typically stored. Curious pet paws may be able to pry or pull open cabinets and drawers, but childproof latches can make that considerably more difficult. · Close toilet lids. While images of puppies drinking from toilets may elicit some laughs, the nonprofit organization American Humane warns that chemicals in common toilet cleaners can be deadly to pets. In addition, small puppies or kittens can drown in toilets. Keep all toilet lids closed when toilets are not in use. · Keep potentially harmful items out of pets’ reach. Household
cleaners beneath the kitchen sink are not the only items around the house that can be harmful to pets. Medications should always be stored on high shelves where pets cannot reach them. In addition, make sure all laundry room items, including detergent and dryer sheets, are stored out of pets’ reach. Speak with a veterinarian about human foods that might be harmful to pets and make sure such foods are not left out where pets can reach them. If necessary, make sure all foods are served on dinner tables or kitchen counters that are inaccessible to pets. · Conceal all wires. Today’s homes are more connected than ever before, and that often
translates to more wires around the house. Make sure all wires are bundled together and out of the reach and view of pets, as they may be tempted to chew on them. Even wires that are out of reach may tempt pets if they can see them, so pet owners should make concerted efforts to conceal wires. · Move or remove potentially poisonous plants. But prospective pet owners should research each plant in their homes to make sure the plants are not poisonous to animals. Move potentially poisonous plants to places where pets cannot access them. Remove any poisonous floor plants from the home before purchasing or adopting a pet.

Taking care of a pet is a big undertaking, and responsible pet owners recognize that the work begins even before pets come home. Pets, particularly puppies and kittens, tend to be curious. Pet parents can protect pets from their own curiosity by pet-proofing their homes. Pet-proofing a home protects pets from accidents and injuries as they grow acclimated to their surroundings. Here are some ways to keep four-legged friends safe: · Install childproof latches. Much like children after they learn to crawl and then walk, young pets tend to be curious, and that curiosity can put them in precarious positions. Pet owners should install childproof

Courtyard Coffeehouse will bring together two acts of acoustic music beginning with returning artist Jon Knauss of Kilo Lima. Knauss described Kilo Lima as an “Americana music collective that seeks to tell stories of hope and grief. Their sense of songwriting and storytelling puts a fresh twist on the more engrained and traditional aspects of the folk genre.” Knauss will be followed by the musical trio of David Wilson of Bailey Run, Steve Davis, and Lynn Royer. Wilson has opened for national artists such
Foundation (AVMF) advises all pet owners to properly restrain their pets before departing on a car trip, no matter how short or long that trip is expected to be. In addition to properly restraining pets on car trips, pet owners can take several other steps to ensure the safety of their pets when riding in cars: · Don’t take pets along on car trips unless it is absolutely necessary. While it can be fun to take a pet with you, the AVMF advises pet owners to leave their pets home when possible. Pet owners whose pets are exhibiting signs of anxiety should try to address the anxiety so pets are comfortable at home alone. · Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes. The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Folks who enjoy music and relaxing with a cup of coffee will want to be at the Courtyard Coffeehouse in Strasburg on Saturday, May 18. Organizers of the event invite the public to stop by and get to know some new faces in the Lancaster music scene. Attendees will be treated to a mix of American folk and rock with a country twist. The show will begin at 7 p.m., and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m. An outdoor event has been planned, but the festivities will be moved indoors if the weather does not cooperate.
Many people can recognize the familiar image of a car traveling down the road with the head of a seemingly happy dog hanging out from the front passenger seat. Traveling in such a way may seem harmless, but doing so can be detrimental to both pets and their owners. According to Paws to Click, a community that aims to inspire pet owners to travel responsibly with their pets, allowing pets to travel in cars without employing a harness poses a significant threat to everyone in the car. The group notes that an unrestrained 75pound dog will exert about 2,250 pounds of force in a crash in which the car is traveling at just 30 miles per hour. Such force can injure others in the car as well as the pet. In addition, unrestrained pets may challenge first responders in an effort to protect their owners after an accident has taken place. It makes sense to harness pets when taking them along in the car. After all, drivers and their passengers wear seat belts, so why not provide the same safety net to pets? But Paws to Click notes that 84 percent of dog owners drive with their dogs in the car without using restraints. This despite the fact that American Veterinary Medical

individuals should use a hand mirror to inspect the back of their neck, shoulders, upper back, and any part of the back of the upper arms that could not be viewed in step 4. Using both mirrors, individuals should scan the lower back, buttocks, and backs of both legs. The front and sides of both legs, thigh to shin, ankles, tops of feet, between toes, and under toenails should be checked. Finally, the soles of feet and heels should be examined. better public education, and early detection are all contributing to this positive trend. It is important to get regular skin exams with a dermatologist. Finding a melanoma early can make all the difference in the prognosis; the estimated five-year survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early is about 98 percent. The survival rate falls to 64 percent when the disease reaches the lymph nodes and 23 percent when the disease metastasizes to distant organs. A professional skin exam takes only a few minutes out of a day, but it can provide peace of mind for the year. To make the most of an appointment, individuals

cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. An estimated 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Only in exceedingly rare cases can it spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening. It should not be taken lightly, though, because it can be just as disfiguring as other forms of skin cancer, if not treated promptly. Melanoma, one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer, is now being diagnosed more frequently than in the past. While melanoma incidence is on the rise, the mortality rate is expected to decrease by 22 percent this year. Significant advances in treatment,

Skin cancer is the world’s most common cancer. In the United States, more people are diagnosed with the disease each year than all other cancers combined. When caught and treated early, skin cancer is highly curable. When allowed to progress, however, it can cause disfigurement and even death. That is why The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that adults see a dermatologist at least once a year for a skin exam and perform monthly self-exams at home. Anything on one’s skin that is new, changing, or unusual could be cause for concern. The three most common forms of skin

Many pet parents choose to include their four-legged companions in their travel plans. Bringing pets along can reduce the hassle of finding a pet sitter or a boarding service. Traveling with pets in tow also can be enjoyable for the entire family, including pets. Perhaps that is why a recent study from AAA and Best Western International found that more than half of American pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel. Traveling with pets can be fun, but it means taking some extra steps when planning a trip to ensure pets are safe and content. Before hitting the road or soaring into the sky, pet owners should consider the following tips: · Acclimate the pet to the car. Conduct a trial run with your pet in tow to gauge how it handles a car ride. Start with shorter trips and build up. Assess how the pet reacts so you can make adjustments if necessary. · Get a wellness check. Visit the vet prior to departing, particularly if you will be traveling far or abroad. Pack an updated copy of health and immunization records, as well as proof of ownership of the pet. Some countries require pet passports. Investigate if the destination country requires quarantine of the animal. · Buy a quality pet carrier. Be sure to have a secure and comfortable pet carrier for your dog, cat, or small animal. This can make travel safer for the animal. If flying, you may need to purchase an airline-approved crate.
Mark the crate with identification information and contact numbers. · Pack a pet-friendly kit. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests bringing along food, a bowl, a leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow. Bring along bottled water as well. Drinking unfamiliar water can upset pets’ stomachs. · Book direct flights. A direct flight reduces the likelihood a pet will be kept on the tarmac or spend even longer times in the baggage hold of the plane. A pets-only airline might be a good choice as well. For example, Pet Airways offers climate-controlled cabins outfitted with individual crates, and a flight attendant checks on the animals every 15 minutes. After landing, pets are given a bathroom break. · Reserve pet-friendly lodging. Many hotel and motel chains now offer pet accommodations, and some provide pet-friendly rooms. There may be specific requirements, such as restricting the pet to a crate when unattended. · Make sure microchip data is current. Log into the service that coordinates with the pet’s microchip. Check to see that your address and phone number are current. Consider adding temporary travel contact data so the pet can be reunited with you if it gets lost at your destination.

Maria underwent almost a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments to her throat and chest. She had always enjoyed singing, but following the treatments she lost her voice. Maria did regain her voice, and, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, she was able to achieve her dream of recording her own song and music video in a professional studio. To listen to Maria’s song “Recover,” readers may visit https://youtu.be/ H5HaKcz_aVg. The theme this year is “Hope Across the Galaxy.” Teams are encouraged to register to join the May 18 event, which will begin with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. The event will continue through midnight and will be held on the track at Downingtown West High School. The event’s Survivor Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m., and the Luminaria Ceremony will begin at 9 p.m. For more information, readers may visit www.RelayForLife.org/ paccc and www.facebook.com /RFLofCCC.
