Attendees at a past service at the Garden of Hope in Gordonville gather around the sculpture that is central to the garden. This year’s service for families to commemorate children lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death will be held at the garden at 4 p.m. on June 9.
When Dawn Waltman and her husband, Brian, had a stillborn child 23 years ago, the experience jarred them. As they worked to negotiate the grieving process, the couple discovered there was no place for families to go to commemorate their lost children. “People expected these families to pick up and move on,” recalled Dawn. Dawn and Brian did not agree with the cultural response to their situation. “We felt deeply the babies should be remembered,” said Dawn. “We didn’t feel God wanted families to just move on from a loss. The child should be grieved, remembered, and celebrated.” The couple set about creating a place for those who had lost babies to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Students from Lindsay Mitman’s second-grade class at the Octorara Primary Learning Center spent the school year keeping in touch with their new pen pals from Ashbridge Manor Senior Living of Downingtown. After months of letters back and forth, it was time for the two groups to meet in person. On May 21, the group of senior citizens traveled to the school to meet the children. As a greeting, the youngsters sang songs for the visitors, then

While the sculpture is a focal point, Dawn pointed out that the garden has two memorial walls. “Families can order plaques in memory of their babies,” she explained, noting that plaques that have been placed in the garden honor children who were lost recently as well as those lost more than 50 years ago. She added that siblings sometimes purchase a plaque in honor of a brother or sister. Readers who would like more information about the garden or the service may visit www.lancastergardenof hope.com.

The service will include Scripture readings and song. Dawn will speak about the mission of the garden and what it means for families. Each family will receive a yellow biodegradable balloon on which to write the name of the child they lost. “We do a remembrance walk from the Tobacco Barn to the Garden of Hope,” said Dawn, who explained that yellow is the color of remembrance. “It is silent as we walk with the balloons.” At the garden, doves will be released to symbolize the spirit of God journeying with the families, and the babies’ names will be read. “As the name is read, the families release their balloon,” explained Dawn. When Dawn and Brian were first envisioning a memorial garden for families, they saw the “Hope” sculpture of Christ holding a baby in his arms and holding a mother’s hand on a Focus on the Family broadcast. They knew the piece belonged in the garden, so they contacted Beverly Paddleford, the creator of the sculpture, and raised the funds to purchase one. By 2005, Garden of Hope’s full-size sculpture was being transported to different churches for services. In 2006, Myron Stoltzfus donated land for the garden. “We spent a couple years on land development and structure of the garden,” said Dawn, who noted that many area excavators, masons, and landscapers came in and volunteered to create and build the garden. Paintings and a reflection gazebo for families to visit at any time are also part of the garden.

Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, raised $207,000 at its 34th annual fundraising banquet and silent auction, which was held on May 6. The event, which featured a silent auction of 75 gift baskets, hors d’oeuvres and a photo booth, was held at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Malvern. “It was really a great night for the ministry,” said Michelle Maloney, CCWS development director. “We had 280 people attend.” Following the auction was a formal dinner and presentation featuring pastor Jason Houck from Mission Community Church of Downingtown and Lauren McComas, president and artistic director of SALT Performing Arts in Chester Springs, as masters of ceremonies. CCWS executive director Myriam Ruager and CCWS board member Dr. Aaron Chambers were the evening’s presenters. Even though the event was held in springtime, it reflected a Christmas motif, with a theme of “Light Up the Night.” The presentation focused on the idea that individuals can be the light
in a dark world by bringing their personal best to help others. The fundraiser began with a live rendition of the song “The Little Drummer Boy” with the singers situated around actors portraying the Little Drummer Boy and Mary, holding baby Jesus. “SALT Performing Arts provided the singers, and Mary was also an actress from SALT,” Maloney said, noting that the little drummer boy was portrayed by a local youth from the community. Later in the presentation, Chambers show a recorded ultrasound on-screen. Before closing, he shared a client testimony in which a client came to CCWS and ultimately chose to parent her baby after seeing her baby via ultrasound. Ruager explained the mission of CCWS is “to educate and empower individuals and their families to make life-affirming choices.” She then shared statistics regarding the growth of CCWS’s three Chester Countybased centers. “Just as Jesus was the light to the broken world on Christmas Day, we too can be the light, but not just at Christmas, but 365 days per year,” she stated. She concluded her presentation with

Veterinary Hospital Has New Location Valley Veterinary Hospital, open since 1996, has moved to a new 18,000square-foot facility at the renovated historic Bull Tavern just one mile from its old office. The new center, 1145 Valley Forge Road in Phoenixville, offers additional services, including
doggy day care, grooming, and luxury overnight boarding for dogs and cats. In addition, the larger building will double the hospital space, allowing for expanded veterinary services, five exam rooms and two surgery suites, outdoor play areas, aqua therapy, training, and more. An open house was
held on May 19. The new center incorporates the historic Bull Tavern, built in 1734. The building’s façade was restored to its original stonework by removing layers of painted stucco. For more information, readers may visit https://valley veterinaryhospital.net/.

We’ve discovered we like the same things,” Barbara Kaptain said as she worked on a craft with the students. The craft project was also fun for her. “It certainly stretches my lazy mind,” she said with a smile.

“The students started at the beginning of the year, and they really built a relationship with their pen pals,” Mitman said. “I think about how much today people text or email. Letter writing is not done so often, so it’s pretty cool to expose the children to that, and they got to know people from another generation. They might not have that type of relationship in their lives.” The pen pal connection came from the family connection between Mitman and her mother, Veronique Hadfield, who is the activities director at Ashbridge Manor Senior Living. “I wanted to reach out to someone (for the project), and she was the first one I thought of,” Mitman said. Mitman selected students for the pen pal project who would be available all year. Numbers were limited to one or two youngsters per senior. Hadfield herself joined in the project, corresponding with two second-grade pen pals, and was anxious to meet them. “We learned about each other’s hobbies; we learned a lot about each other,” she said. “It’s been fun working with the students. This is a great time to get together and meet the person we’ve just read

The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding that the layout is more detailed than others at the museum. “(The layout) doesn’t run unless (a volunteer) is here to run it because it is a little more complicated,” he said. “You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and the museum, the digital command control system for the layout is the same one Cole uses for the layout in his home basement in Lancaster. Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading. The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was originally for the Christmas tree, but I built a layout.” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who
took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. HO did not hold Cole’s interest continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the O-gauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28. Pictured on front: Bill Cole

with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the companyowned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates. Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participant based on this data. Locust Lane Riding Center (LLRC), 814 W. Kings Highway (Route 340), Coatesville, will present a Family Fun Festival and old-fashioned barn dance on Saturday, June 8. The festival, featuring live music, pony rides, hayrides, bounce houses and yard games, will be held from 1 to 6 p.m., followed by the barn dance, with professional line dancing instruction, from 6 to 9 p.m. LLRC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Shelly Pelet-Galpin that offers equine-assisted learning programs to youths. The upcoming is fundraiser is designed to provide a day of family fun for local residents and to educate the community about the programs being offered at LLRC. “We’ve had lots of different kinds of events, but this is the first time we invited the community to this property (for a festival and barn dance),” said Pelet-Galpin. “We want people to know who we are and what we do. “ Admission to the festival is free, but wristbands for children will be available for purchase. “We will have a wristband area for children where they can have

Students from pg 1 Army veteran who served during Vietnam. The OCS was started by Dr. Ken Hartman in New Jersey in 2009. The mission of the organization is to honor and thank graduating seniors for their service in advance so they know their hometown is appreciative of their decision to serve. OCS events are planned and carried out by volunteers, including veterans, educators, merchants, community leaders and activeduty military personnel. “A committee of nine volunteers started a nonprofit OCS chapter for the Chester County community to make sure these fine young patriots are not forgotten,” said Ginny Topper, a committee member of OCS of Chester County. “Our goal is to give these next-generation veterans a night to remember. We want these enlistees to walk away saying, ‘My community is proud of what I did.’” For more information about the organization, readers may visit www.ourcommunity salutes.org.

The Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference recently honored a working single mom who has overcome adversity and is active in her community. Angela Moyer of Coatesville is the winner of this year’s Belinda R. Harrison Award, announced on April 27 at the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference at Henderson High School in West Chester. The conference’s theme was “Great Job, Mom!” All single mothers were invited to attend free of charge. Moyer was nominated by her peers, who say she is an impressive single mom who has provided not only for her family, but also for those in her community. When Moyer found herself and her two children unstably housed a few years ago, she connected with a Chester County agency to obtain affordable housing, secure a full-time position, obtain her own transportation, and connect her children with the resources they needed. She is also actively involved in her church as well as her place of employment at a homeless shel-
ter for men and women. The 2019 Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference was held to encourage, educate and empower single moms whose role is main provider for the family. This year’s conference featured a new Employment Fair, highlighting employers offering a sustainable living wage. Free child care and lunch was provided so single mothers could attend clinics regarding child custody, child support and personal finances. Financial information was provided by Benchmark Federal Credit Union, which was the lead sponsor of the conference. A Resource Fair with approximately 40 exhibitors provided information about dozens of subjects, including nutrition, health, education, finance, wardrobe, resumes and more. Plus, the event provided networking with other single moms, as well as free manicures, hair consults and massages. For more information on the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference, readers may visit https://singlemotherscc.org/, call

example, a dog can wear a collar and a name tag. Collars may seem “old school” in a digital world, but a dog tag is an ideal - and fast - way to identify a pet and provide contact information should it get lost. 2. Invest in microchipping. Microchipping is an effective way to ensure current contact information always accompanies the animal, whether it is wearing a collar or not. Microchips are small identification devices about the size of a grain of rice that are painlessly inserted just under the skin of a pet. The microchip gives off a signal that can be read with a handheld scanner used by animal shelters and most vets. A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association examined information from 53 animal shelters across the U.S. and confirmed the high rate of return of microchipped dogs and cats to their families. If you microchip your pet, it is
essential to keep the contact information associated with the chip updated. 3. Track the pet. GPS-based devices can be used to locate a pet if it gets out of the house. Much like the tracking devices in phones and watches, small tags can be placed on the pet’s collar and be tracked through an app on the owner’s phone or another device. 4. Ensure your pet is spayed or neutered. Animals that have not been spayed or neutered have a tendency to roam because they are looking to fulfill the instinct to mate. Neutering removes this desire, and the pets may be more content to remain at home. According to the Animal Humane Society, studies indicate that sterilized animals are less likely to roam than unsterilized animals. Many clinics will perform the surgery for a discount. 5. Leash pets outdoors. Even the most well-behaved and
trained pets may dash off after a squirrel or other distractions from time to time, especially if the pet is scared. These issues can be prevented by using a leash or an animal carrier at all times when a pet is outside. 6. Escape-proof homes and yards. Check to see if any potential escape routes are around the house and outside in the yard. Pets need a secure, supervised area to exercise. Fencing needs to be tall enough to prevent pets from jumping over it. Dogs that dig can be derailed by burying chicken wire around the edges of the fence. Make sure gates are self-latching as well. Indoors, check that windows are secure. Exercise caution when opening doors and check that pets have not squeezed through, and advise visitors to do the same. If you have a Houdini on your hands, supervise outdoor play.

No pet parents want their furry friends to escape the house, car, or yard and become lost. But curious pets have a way of getting out on their own, which not even the most watchful pet owners can always prevent. Animals that do not know how to find their way back home can quickly become disoriented and lost. The number of pets that go missing can be staggering. The American Humane Association estimates that more than 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the United States every year. One in three pets will become lost at some point during its life. While it is impossible to prevent every situation that may lead to a lost pet, pet owners can take some simple preventative steps to keep pets from becoming lost. 1. Get a collar and identification tag. Pets should wear some form of identification, which will differ based on the animal. For
