Workshop from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

Parkesburg-area residents are invited to a public workshop and open house to discuss the borough’s comprehensive plan on Thursday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Parkesburg POINT, 700 Main St., Parkesburg. The comprehensive plan will cover priorities such as economic development and revitalization, transportation, connectivity and safety, community amenities and resources, borough services, land use and community character. For example, issues to be addressed in the plan may include where additional sidewalks and trail connections might be needed, what types of businesses residents would like to see in the borough and what types of recreational facilities are needed. No formal presentation will be given, so residents may drop in any time during the evening to provide their input. Light refreshments will be available. Members of the public will be invited to review and comment on the plan’s draft recommendations and participate in activities based on the priorities. The draft plan recommendations were developed by the borough’s Comprehensive Plan Task Force. The public was previously invited to comment and add ideas to the plan during the first public workshop and open house in January. “We estimate about 125 residents attended the meeting in January,” said Mark Gillen, senior community planner with the Chester County Planning Commission. “We hope to have people

who were unable to attend in January come to the June meeting. We are also seeking their feedback on the draft recommendations that were developed based on the public feedback at the January meeting.” Development of Parkesburg’s comprehensive plan is being led by the 10-member task force consisting of representatives of the Borough Council, the planning commission and local businesses, as well as borough residents. According to borough officials, the goal of the comprehensive plan is “to identify existing conditions, define a vision for Parkesburg Borough’s future and provide a series of actions or recommendations to achieve the vision in the next 10 years.” The public’s input is part of the process. “We are trying to give the public as many opportunities as possible to comment on the plan,” Gillen noted. “ We actually participated in the borough’s Final Friday on May 31 as another outreach effort.” For more information on the comprehensive plan, readers may visit www.parkesburg.org. Pictured on front: Chris Patriarca (center), a community planner with the Chester County Planning Commission, talked to residents from Parkesburg about the future of their community during a public workshop held in January. Another workshop about the borough’s comprehensive plan will be held on June 13 at The Parkesburg POINT.

Dairy is the largest sector of Pennsylvania’s $135.7 billion agriculture industry, contributing $14.7 billion annually to the economy and supporting 52,000 jobs in the state. In 2018, PDA, PA Preferred, and CDE joined dairy farmers and industry advocates to kick off “Choose PA Dairy: Goodness That Matters,” a campaign to support Pennsylvania’s dairy industry by educating consumers on how to find and buy locally produced milk and the impact it has on Pennsylvania’s economy and the health of its residents. Pennsylvania travelers are invited to enjoy the newly expanded Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail. After a popular inaugural season, the Pennsylvania Ice Cream Trail expanded from 12 creameries in eastern and southcentral Pennsylvania into three trails including a Western Pennsylvania Trail, with a total of 32 stops in these regions for 2019. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) deputy secretary Carrie Fischer Lepore recently joined local and state officials to kick off the 2019 Ice Cream Trail season at Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs. The creamery is on a historic 103acre dairy farm that has been home to four generations of the Matthews family. It is one of 10 stops on the Eastern Pennsylvania Trail. Initiated in 2018, the trail is a partnership of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s (PDA) PA Preferred program, the DCED’s PA Tourism Office, and the Center for Dairy Excellence (CDE) to highlight dairy destinations across Pennsylvania. The program includes a passport that visitors can have stamped to earn prizes at stops along each trail. More information about creameries on the trail, including a downloadable passport, can be found at www.visitPA.com/scoops. Visitors who share photos from the

Youngster To Represent Chester County As Petite Miss Agriculture Margaret Jarvie, 8, a secondgrade student at Uwchlan Hills Elementary School, was recently named Chester County Petite Miss United States Agriculture. In her new role, Margaret is promoting agriculture in the area through appearances at local events and by collecting fresh produce for people in need. Margaret’s mother, Meghan, explained that she and her daughter learned about the contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. “My daughter loves the Farm Show, and we go to the Farm Show every year and she always sees these girls (who are county agriculture queens), talks to them and she wanted to be involved,” Meghan said. “It is unusual because we don’t live on a farm and she is a little young for 4-H.” Margaret applied for the contest by sending in a photo and writing an essay about why she was interested in agriculture and how she would promote agriculture in her county. After being selected as a county winner, Mar-

garet was presented a crown and a sash during a ceremony held in April in Lewistown. Margaret will now compete at the Pennsylvania Miss United States Agriculture Pageant in September at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Contestants will compete based on their age in various categories. Since her crowning, Margaret has volunteered at a local Easter egg hunt and at the Down to Earn Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) facility in Downingtown. “We helped them with their salad exchange (for CSA members),” said Margaret. She has also collected produce for those in need and plans to continue the effort this summer. “When you donate to local food banks, it’s mostly canned foods. She is working with Chester County Food Bank to promote the collection of fresh fruits and vegetables to donate to local food banks,” Meghan explained. “She already collected carrots, onions, potatoes and peppers - items that will last more than few days in the refrigerator - and we donated them to the Phoenixville

Community Center.” Margaret will hold a similar food drive during the Uwchlan Township Community Day celebration on Saturday, July 13, at Lionville Park. “Chester County Food Bank has a truck they park there, and we will put up a tent and we will have different bins that people can drop off their donations,” said Meghan. “What we collect will go to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. We will also print out a bunch of recipes to use with these fresh fruit items so people who come to the food bank know different ways to prepare them.” Margaret was also scheduled to appear in the Memorial Day parade in Downingtown, and she plans to attend a farm camp this summer at a working dairy farm, where she will be able to collect eggs from the chickens, learn about the milking process, make cheese and

Award from pg 1 Chester County has earned an award for its efforts to improve air quality and protect public health. The Greater Valley Forge (GVF) Transportation Management Association nominated the County of Chester for the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission’s (DVRPC) Air Quality Partnership Excellence Award. The county’s comprehensive plan, Landscapes3, focuses on the advancement of multimodal transportation methods for the purpose of reducing congestion, supporting a clean energy network, and focusing on climate change. The Chester County Planning Commission also developed the Phoenixville Region Multimodal Transportation Plan to offer solutions for that area. The county also offers Transportation Demand Management programs. The Air Quality Partnership program is run through DVRPC. The program is a coalition of private companies, government agencies

and nonprofit organizations dedicated to raising awareness of air quality in the Delaware Valley and promoting actions that people and organizations can take to reduce air pollution and protect public health. Annually, the program recognizes local organizations that take actions to reduce emissions, guard public health, and offer more mobility options. Friday, June 28, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. True Serve Volleyball Camp for boys and girls in fourth through eighth grades will be held at the church on Monday, July 29, through Wednesday, July 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. The softball camp will be run by Emily Houck, a graduate of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and Eastern University in Wayne, who played softball at both schools. Her sister, Amanda Houck, who is also a PVHS graduate and who was an AllAmerican pitcher for West Chester University, will join her in running the camp this year. According to Doug, last year’s basic skills softball camp attracted 50 girls. “We are hoping for 60 this year,” said Doug, who encouraged campers to bring their own gloves and any other equipment they may have. The volleyball camp will focus on fundamentals and will be taught by collegiate-level players Miranda and Mickayla

His appearances will celebrate this year’s Summer Reading theme, “A Universe of Stories.” “The Spirit of Lindbergh” programs will run from Thursday, June 13, to Thursday, Aug. 1. “The Spirit of Lindbergh” is a fully staged one-man presentation geared toward audiences of all ages. Kauffman, who both graduated from Octorara Area High School and played volleyball at Eastern University. Knee pads are recommended for the camp but are not required. Doug noted that 12 students took part in the 2018 volleyball camp, but he is hoping to see 20 youths at this year’s camp. Pequea Baptist’s interest in teaching sports to children began in 2010 when the church began running an Upward Basketball program. Biblical principles and lessons are incorporated into the camp curriculums. Doug encouraged students of all skill levels to take part in the camps. “At both camps, we evaluate skill levels, and we separate those who are just beginning and focus on fundamentals. We take the more advanced players and focus on more advanced skills,” he said. “We can offer something for everybody. We are open to anyone who wants to get better at their game no matter where they are in skill level.” Doug added that the camps have been productive for both students and coaches. “We are thrilled to help the (students) improve their skills and to get better as coaches as we instruct,” he said. Girls who wish to take part in the True Swing camp are asked to register by Sunday, June 23. Boys and girls who wish to participate in the True Serve camp are asked to register by Sunday, July 28. A registration fee is required to attend each camp. Readers may register at www.f bcpequea.org. Readers who have questions may email the church at office@fbcpequea.org or call 717-442-4403.

Hellbenders prefer rocky streambeds. Their spongelike bodies allow them to squeeze into crevices, which they use for protection and for nesting. Folds of wrinkled skin provide a large surface through which they draw most of their oxygen. Gov. Tom Wolf, dressed in a blue “Hellbender Defender” T-shirt, signed a bill designating the Eastern hellbender as Pennsylvania’s official state amphibian on April 23. Since 2016, Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s (CBF) Student Leadership Council (SLC) members have spearheaded the campaign to recognize the Eastern hellbender and create greater awareness of the need to reduce pollution in Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams. Hellbenders are an indicator species for clean water. They survive where there is cold, clear, swift-running water. Students studied hellbenders extensively, installed nesting boxes in several Pennsylvania streams, and wrote the first draft of a bill that was sponsored by state Sen. Gene Yaw and passed the Senate last year. The bill did not pass the House before the session ended, however. When the new session began in January, Yaw reintroduced the effort as Senate Bill 9, which was signed into law by Wolf. The bill was passed by the Senate and House on Feb. 4 and April 16, respectively.

Such trips are popular, as the U.S. Travel Association notes that nearly three out of four domestic trips are taken for leisure purposes. Families looking to get away from home on weekends often look for activities or locales that appeal to children and parents alike while getting everyone out of the house. A handful of outdoor getaway ideas the whole family can enjoy are as follows: Hiking By 2015, the United States was home to nearly 240,000 miles of hiking trails on federal and state lands. Hiking is a healthy hobby that often is free, which can be especially appealing to budget-conscious parents. When exploring potential hiking destinations, parents should look for parks with child-friendly trails. Many parks have paved trails on flat surfaces, which are ideal for families with small children. Rivers/lakes Escaping to a nearby river or lake for a day on the water can make for a memorable, familyfriendly getaway. Look for activities like fishing and bring fishing rods or rent from nearby bait and tackle shops. If cruising is more the family’s style, look for boat tours that offer a chance to explore local history while giving the whole family an opportunity to relax on a boat and soak up some sun. Zoo/aquarium According to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, there are more than 220 accredited zoos and aquariums in the United States and Canada. That makes it easy for families that live just about anywhere to plan day trips to local zoos, where they can spend the day marveling at exotic wildlife. Theme parks Theme parks make for a great destination during weekend getaways. Many theme parks even offer rides and attractions for young children, but parents should call ahead to confirm this before planning their trips. Weekend getaways are great ways for families to spend time in the great outdoors and take advantage of local attractions. With some simple investigation, families might find there are lots of local attractions within driving distance of their homes.

People who live in regions where winters are cold often note the feeling of rejuvenation they enjoy on the first warm day of late winter or spring. The chance to get outside and soak up some sun while breathing some warm air is a feeling unlike any other for those who spend much of their winters bundled up in layers of clothing. The value of spending time outdoors extends well beyond dusting off winter cabin fever, providing long-term benefits that might surprise even the most ardent outdoor enthusiast. A 2018 report from researchers at the University of East Anglia found that living close to nature and spending time outside have wide-ranging health benefits, including a reduced risk for Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. Authors of the report studied data from across the globe, gathering evidence from more than 140 studies involving more than 290 million people. Researchers cannot pinpoint exactly why people who spend ample time in greenspaces enjoy better health. However, the benefits appear to be so wide-ranging as to suggest that people who currently do not spend much time in green spaces should make a concerted effort to do so. Some ways busy individuals can start spending more time outdoors include eating outside, spending time in the backyard, going for nightly walks around the neighborhood or in a nearby park, and going hiking on weekends. People who think that accessing nature is helping them to stay healthy are not wrong. In fact, making time to include nature in one’s daily or weekly routine can have positive and wide-ranging effects on one’s overall health.

Due to the storms that took place during the summer of 2018, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania requested and obtained a Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Declaration. EIDL assistance is available only to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, and most private nonprofit organizations in the designated counties and after the SBA determines they are unable to obtain credit elsewhere.

EIDLs provide the necessary working capital to help small businesses survive until normal operations resume after a disaster. The SBA can provide up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses that could have been met had the disaster not occurred. The loan amount will be based on the actual economic injury and the company’s financial needs, regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage. For businesses in Adams,

Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties, the eligible event was the flooding that took place on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2018; the deadline to apply is Thursday, July 18. Berks County businesses may also apply due to the flooding that took place on July 21 to 27, 2018, with the application deadline of Tuesday, July 23. Berks and Chester county businesses are also eligible to apply based on the flooding that occurred from Aug. 12 to 15, and the deadline to apply is Wednes-

ARRIVING LATE?

Many people do not realize the consequences of putting off needed vehicle maintenance. Not only can neglecting vehicle service cause safety issues if ignored, but it can lead to costly repairs down the road. The nonprofit Car Care Council suggests drivers follow a vehicle service schedule, keep a free copy of the council’s Car Care Guide in the glovebox, and perform common routine maintenance procedures to keep a vehicle running at its best. Routine maintenance procedures include: - Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake, and transmission as well as

windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. - Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors, and drums inspected at each oil change. - Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. - Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose, or showing signs of excessive wear. - Check the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and

cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and safety reasons, such as defrosting. - Check the wipers and lighting so that the driver can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so the driver can see clearly when driving during precipitation. Drivers should be sure to fully inspect their vehicle annually, including performing a tune-up and wheel alignment. If a problem is suspected, drivers should address it quickly before minor repairs become more complicated, expensive repairs.

Summer Potato Salad Recipe When firing up the grill or packing picnic essentials, home chefs should consider which dishes they will serve alongside the main course. Of course, no summertime meal would be complete without a tasty potato salad in the mix. This recipe for Potato Salad with Bacon and Parsley from Allie Lewis Clapp, Lygeia Grace, and Candy Gianetti’s “Real Simple: Easy, Delicious Home Cooking” (Time Home Entertainment) offers a tasty take on this classic dish. Potato Salad with Bacon and Parsley (Serves 6): 1.5 pounds new potatoes, about 15 Kosher salt and black pepper 4 slices bacon 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 cup fresh, flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped Directions 1 - Place the potatoes in a pot with 1 teaspoon salt and enough water to cover and simmer until tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Drain and run under cold water to cool. Cut into quarters. 2 - Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towellined plate. Let cool, then crumble. 3 - In a large bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, mustard, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the potatoes, bacon, and parsley and toss to combine. Tip: The potatoes can be cooked and tossed with the dressing and parsley up to 1 day in advance and then placed in the refrigerator, covered. The salad should be brought to room temperature and the bacon should be added just before serving.

Maximizing Summertime Another suggestion is to take a week off just to relax. Sometimes a person needs to recharge after going on vacation, as planning a trip and then the trip itself can require a lot of work. Staycations or devoting another week to just lounging around or catching up on tasks around the house can ease pressure. Then it is possible to go back to work or school feeling even more recharged. It is important to get out of the house or office. People should make it a point to spend time outdoors every day. Suggestions include going for a midday walk, sitting in the park after work, or throwing the ball around with the children in the backyard. Sunlight can be great for the mind and body. Doctors with the Heliotherapy, Light, and Skin Research Center at Boston University Medical Center say sunlight triggers the release of serotonin and other hormones associated with a good mood. Increased exposure to sunlight also can regulate circadian

Donations Sought For Scholarship Fund To raise awareness of the Front Porch Trust Scholarship Fund, Front Porch Trust has announced that Malvern Bank will be accepting donations and fundraising on behalf of the Trust at all locations through Sunday, June 30. The scholarship fund recognizes and rewards students from Great Valley and Conestoga high schools who are making a difference in the community through volunteer

efforts and/or school and civic involvement. rhythms for better sleep. Sunlight can trigger the release of nitric oxide into blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure. Exploring summer programs is another option. Adults and children can try new skills and explore different talents during the summer. People should consider signing up for a camp or a class that runs several weeks. This will help stimulate the mind. Summer offers the opportunity to visit friends and family. Now that schedules have loosened up, individuals can take the opportunity to increase time spent with friends or family members, whether they live close by or far away. People are encouraged to make it a point to reconnect with someone who has been out of touch.

Summer can fly by. Because summer can sometimes seem to come and go in a flash, there are tips that can help everyone to make the most of this time of year. Vacations from work and school are great ways to make summer memories. There are several ways to get even more out of these relaxing breaks from the norm. People should truly disconnect from electronic devices for a period of time to provide themselves with a mental break. Individuals should stop answering work emails, avoid social media, and turn off reminders of things that do not need their attention while on vacation or taking a break. People should consider booking a trip. It is not the destination but the opportunity to step away from the norm that can help make a person feel like he or she has truly gotten a break. People are encouraged to get away from their surroundings, if only for a weekend. Nearby resorts and water parks are great for short jaunts with children.
