Caregiver Lap held later in the evening honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took place at dusk to remember those lives touched by cancer. Dr. David Cziperle, a thoracic surgeon with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, spoke to the audience before the luminarias were lit and the names of those being honored were read. “It’s very moving,” described Delp. “Really the best way to say it is that Relay For Life is not an event; it’s an experience.”

fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors - whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A
Plenty of fun activities were peppered into the mix to spur walkers on as they persevered through the night, including a movie on a big screen, games and relays, frozen T-shirt and Twister competitions, yoga and Zumba, children’s entertainment, trivia, crafts, and themed laps like Ready for Beddie and Here Comes the Sun. Music was blasting for the duration of the event, with live performances by Matt Wheeler, Mandy Salimbeni, Dreadnought Brigade, Peggy Kurtz Keller, Black Cat Band, and Leo DiSanto of Vinegar Creek Constituency. Many Relay teams are made up of cancer survivors or individuals who have family and friends who are survivors or who have lost their battle with the disease. Others, like Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute oncology nurse Julie Justice, know innumerable people affected by cancer. This was the eighth year that Justice participated in the Relay For Life. She served as team captain for the 52-member Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health team, which raised more than $22,735. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled fundraising event and raised $33,000. and lunch and information about ways to improve women’s health. The program is free and open to all women age 16 and over. BWCCA member Connie Rose, one of the event organizers, explained that BWCCA has adopted the African symbol Aya as its logo. An Aya is a fern that symbolizes endurance and resourcefulness. According to “The Adinkra Dictionary,” which defines symbols of West Africa, a person who wears the Aya symbol suggests that he or she has endured adversity and outlasted many challenges. On the day of the café and wellness fair, women will enjoy a light breakfast, a brief introduction and a drumming circle. Attendees will then view a short video presented by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls before the walk begins. “Built Fitness will do a walking clinic before the walk,” noted Rose. “They will talk about the benefits and techniques for walking and do warm-ups. WalkWorks of Chester County mapped out a 1mile walk in the area.” The walk will be held rain or shine. When the attendees return to the OIC, there will be health-related vendors and community partners on hand to provide information. “La Comunidad Hispana will be a vendor, and they will have health check stations so you can get your blood pressure checked,” noted Rose. Attendees will receive a box lunch to conclude the event. Cheryl Miles founded BWCCA in response to a report titled “Blueprint: Leveraging Progress,” which was introduced by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls in September 2016. Miles, along with friends and colleagues across the county, met to discuss the report’s findings about African-American women in Chester County, and the group determined that the three areas that most needed to be addressed were education, economics and health. “The whole focus is really to improve the lives of women and girls in Chester County,” said Rose. “Right now, we are focusing on health care, particularly selfcare, making sure we are giving people tools and information to best take care of themselves. After that, we will go into the other areas of focus.” The Chester County Fund for Women and Girls honored Miles with its Kitchen Table Award at the 14th annual Making a Difference Luncheon held on May 3. Since its formation, BWCCA hosted an inaugural breakfast in December 2018 and sponsored a Black Professional Women’s Network Gathering in January. In June, Chester County Fund for Women and Girls awarded BWCCA a $6,000 grant to launch the Aya health project. OIC president and CEO Joyce Chester, Miles and other BWCCA members attended the grants celebration. “In March, (we hosted a program with) women of color who were running for office in Chester County,” noted Rose. The Aya Café and Wellness Fair is free, but organizers are requesting that women register in advance at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “2019 Aya Café and Wellness Fair.” A link to make a reservation is also available at www.facebook.com/BlackWomenOf ChesterCountyInAction. that making gift items and other productive tasks is just one of the activities students take part in at the center from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. “The children love to bring things along,” said Sadie. The center also provides haystack meals - similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard, tasks Sadie noted that they enjoy. Sadie began working with the children at Penn Johns Sunbeam when she was asked to fill in for another teacher for a year. She spent three years there, and she has been at Sunny Sunbeam for eight years now. “I am so blessed. I just love (my work with the students),” she said. Readers who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-442-4144, or 717-354-2380. The auction number on the day of the sale will be 717-983-8415.

The Chester County commissioners recognized the efforts of leadership, board members and staff of the Chester County Planning Commission at a recent Sunshine public meeting, noting national and regional accolades for Landscapes3, Chester County’s newly adopted longrange comprehensive plan. Landscapes3 has received a national award from the American Planning Association (APA) County Planning Division and an Achievement Award in Planning from the National Association of Counties (NACo). Additionally, the Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association presented Chester County with the Public Leadership Award at its May annual meeting, based on the newly adopted Landscapes3 Plan and the county’s support of smart transportation options. The APA presented Chester County with an Award of Excellence in the Comprehensive Plan - Large Jurisdiction category for Landscapes3 at the APA National Conference in San Francisco in mid-April. Chester County will receive recognition for the NACo Achievement Award at the NACo Conference being held in Las Vegas in July. Landscapes3 seeks to balance preservation and growth across the county’s landscapes in six goal areas: Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Prosper, and Connect. The plan recommits to core principles that are intended to position the county and its municipalities for success, including resource preservation, revitalized urban and suburban centers, housing diversity, transportation choices, collaboration, and resiliency. The plan establishes a preservation and growth vision for the county and its
Children and teenagers will have opportunities to create art at the gallery of the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, this summer. Youths age 13 and older are invited to participate in Teen Open Studio, which is being held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Artists should bring their preferred art materials with them. Instructor Beth Stepenaski will provide assistance and feedback to students who enjoy drawing, painting, pastels, graphic design, and more. Stepenaski has eight years of experience as a graphic designer and animator from which to pull as she acts as a resource for aspiring animators and students who enjoy cartooning and anime. “All artmaking is valid, even cartooning,” Stepenaski said. A suggested donation has been set to attend each open studio. Openings are still available in the three art camps being offered this summer. A cost has been set for each camp, with separate prices for full-day and half-day attendance. Some camps will have an additional fee to cover the cost of materials. “Let’s Make Sense of Art” will be held on Monday, June 24, to Friday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children age 7 and older are invited to attend all day or just half-days. Instructors Sam and Kate Mylin will introduce the basics of art and the creative process. Professional painter Carol S. Herr will
municipalities, guides county government decision-making, guides municipal planning and implementation, and provides a framework for collaboration across municipal boundaries. Development of the plan was guided by the planning commission’s ninemember volunteer advisory board, staff, and a steering committee of 27 members who volunteered their time and expertise. The planning commission began the update of its 2009 comprehensive plan, Landscapes2, in late 2016 with the goal of having a new comprehensive plan completed and adopted within the 10-year time frame required by the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code. The planning commission board and staff began implementing the plan after the county commissioners adopted it in late November 2018. Among the projects currently underway are a study titled “Return on Environment: The Economic Value of Protected Open Space” and a National Register of Historic Places map. The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds veterans and their dependents that they should never pay for assistance to apply for veterans’ benefits. Federal and state laws make provisions for accredited veteran service officers to provide free advice and assistance for all to access their veterans’ benefits. Unfortunately, there are still some people who attempt to profit by assisting veterans to sign up for their benefits. Veterans should never have to pay to apply. There are approximately 200 veteran service officers in Pennsylvania who work within organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices, and several veterans’ service organizations. Accredited veteran service officers provide veterans and their
dependents free assistance to identify, determine eligibility for, and apply for a wide range of benefits on the local, state, and federal levels, including payment of burial allowances, ensuring grave markers and headstones are properly requested and placed, the Disabled Veterans Real Estate Tax Exemption Program, veterans’ emergency assistance, blind and paralyzed veterans’ pensions, the Education Gratuity Program, service connected disability and non-service connected disability pensions, federal health care benefits, and survivor benefits. To locate a county director of veterans affairs or for more information on other veterans service organizations and to find out more about veterans benefits, readers may visit www.dmva.pa.gov and click on Veterans Affairs.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) is accepting applications through Friday, June 28, for the 2019 Fresh Paint Days Pennsylvania. The program is designed to provide community groups with paint and painting supplies enabling them to renew a community structure needing fresh paint. This event is held in partnership with support from Behr paint and The Home Depot. Eight grants of up to 20 gallons of exterior paint and a gift card for painting supplies will be awarded to tax-exempt groups within Pennsylvania. Groups will have 30 days in September to complete their projects. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will select the eight winning projects from among
applications submitted. Selected grantees may seek supplies for only one building per application, and they must provide proof of liability insurance, signed permission to paint from the building owner, and two “before” photos of the intended project. They must also agree to select a color from the Behr paint line and provide a final report with photos capturing the work in progress, as well as “after” photos. Grants will be awarded in July. For more information or to download the application, readers may visit www.keeppa beautiful.org/grants-awards/ fresh-paint-days. Questions can be answered by Michelle Dunn at 877-772-3673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org.
