The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Achievement in American History Awards to local middle school students. As part of the annual program, all private and public schools in the county are welcome to participate. “I send out a personalized invitation around April to each of our schools in Chester County explaining what the award is and inviting them to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “We sent 21 invitations and all of the schools participated; we had 100 percent participation.” Unlike the DAR’s annual American History Essay Contest, which asks students to complete essays that are judged by DAR members, the Outstanding Achievement in American History
Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools. “The students recognized for this award are chosen by a committee of their school’s guidance counselors, eighth-grade counselors and American history teachers. This award is not taken lightly, and at least one school has an end-of-the-year exam to help determine the recipient,” said Dyer. “The teachers decide which eighthgrade student they feel is excited about American history and has excelled in American history.” The winners are announced at endof-year awards ceremonies held at the schools. Educators have the option of presenting the awards themselves or having a DAR member visit to present the award. This year, seven of the awards were presented by DAR members. See DAR Awards pg 7

A summer of reading fun for people of all ages kicked off at Atglen Public Library with a Star Wars party as part of the SummerQuest reading program on June 15. In keeping with the Star Wars theme for the day, costumed visitors from Garrison Carida of the 501st Legion appeared as Darth Vader, stormtroopers and other characters from the series. Photo ops with the characters, door prizes and refreshments were some of the highlights of the party, which also offered a chance to register for the program and borrow some great books. “Summer is our busiest time of the year,” library director Robbyn Kehoe said. “We have about 100 participants in summer reading programs.” Some readers embraced the Star Wars theme with a passion. Among them was
Debbie Cross of Atglen who dressed in costume along with her children. “We love the summer reading program. We go (to the library) all yearround,” Cross said. “The kids love the library, and this brings them in a little bit more for a little extra fun.” “We’re encouraging summer reading,” Kehoe said. “Read 30 minutes a day, check in with us and you get a ticket for one of the prizes. We are starting a new program this year called Patch Power.” The Patch Power portion of the summer reading program allows readers to complete activity cards to earn badges in different categories. Patches are the Epic Wizard, Mad Chef, Globetrotter, Caped Avenger, Board Gaming Genius and Interstellar Seeker. “We have six patches. If you do four activities for (each of) them you get a patch you can sew on your tote bag or backpack,” Kehoe said. See Summer Reading pg 9

In memory of David Turner Jr., the David’s Drive 831 charity recently purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED), an emergency life-saving device for use in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, and placed it at Triple Fresh Market in Coatesville, where David was once employed. The charity was founded in honor of David, who died of a suspected heart arrhythmia at the age of 20 on Dec. 16, 2009, while working at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. “Samantha (David’s sister) was instrumental in making (the AED donation) happen ... and we are proud … that she made it all about stopping this from happening to other families,” stated David Turner Sr., founder and president of
David’s Drive 831. “If this was available to David when it first happened, (there might have been a different outcome). Sam wanted to provide another family with a second chance.” Turner said that placing AEDs in the community can dramatically reduce the time from collapse to defibrillation and can greatly improve survival rates. “Our hope is that it will never be needed, but in the event it is, our hope is that it will save a family the agony of losing a family member due to a cardiac event,” he said. According to www.aed.com, an AED is a portable device that analyzes the heart rhythm and administers an electrical charge to the heart if needed to establish a regular heartbeat in the event of cardiac arrest. will instruct the user to connect the pads to a patient’s bare chest. The pads enable the AED to examine the patient’s heart and determine if the patient is in a viable, shockable rhythm. If the device determines that a shock is required, it will charge in preparation to deliver a shock. The AED is very safe as it will only charge if it determines a shockable rhythm is present. “(The AED at Triple Fresh) is registered with Chester County and the PulsePoint App. (First responders with the app) will get an alert on their phone, and it will tell them where the closest AED is in the area,” Turner explained, noting that since the AED is portable it can be used outside the store building. “It’s not just for Triple Fresh customers and employees. It’s for the community. People can follow the instructions, use the machine and help the person before the ambulance even gets there. It’s very hightech, but supposedly simple to use.” Purchasing the AED is David Drive’s most recent effort in the community. Recently, the charity continued its annual Memorial Day tradition by delivering donated items, including socks, T-shirts and under-

wear, to the Coatesville VA Medical Center. The donations were collected during the 10th annual David’s Drive picnic and collection event held on May 19 at the Turner family home in Coatesville. On Memorial Day, volunteers met at East Fallowfield Park, where last-minute donations of underwear, socks and T-shirts were collected before a caravan of vehicles departed for the VA Medical Center. The group was escorted by members of local fire companies and motorcycle riders. Upon arrival, the volunteers formed a human assembly line to unload all the bags of donations. “On Memorial Day, $100,000 worth of underwear was delivered to the Coatesville VA, bringing David Drive’s 10-year total to a half a million dollars’ worth of underwear donated to homeless and hospitalized veterans,” Turner reported. The decision to leave Ghana and study in the United States was further complicated since Emmanuel had met his future wife, Alice, and they were planning their wedding. “March 24, 2012, was my wedding day. After much discussion with his new wife, Emmanuel decided to leave Ghana and pursue his education at LBC, where he eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in student ministry, biblical studies and communication and a Master of Arts in leadership studies. “At the tail end of my first year, the Lord made it possible for my wife to come over and join me,” Emmanuel said, noting that Alice also attended LBC,

Ghana. For Emmanuel and Alice, the upcoming move is actually a return home, since the couple is originally from Ghana. “In 2010, I met a missionary from the United States. When preaching in the villages, he wanted someone to help him translate,” said Emmanuel, who is fluent in English. “Since I was born and raised in Ghana and settled in different villages, I am able to speak the dialect. I went to preach with him, and we became friends. He returned to the United States and he called me one day and said he wanted me to attend Bible college in the United States. I didn’t say yes right away because I wasn’t ready to travel and I wasn’t ready to leave my family, so I told him to do the paperwork and we would see how things played out.”

Civil War History from pg 1 The Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, has expanded once again. Last year, nearly 1,000 visitors each day viewed the addition of Gen. Longstreet’s headquarters camp, the signal corps, additional Federal generals, troops from the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves Company D, and skirmish battle re-enactments. This year, the event will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 28, 29, and 30, and will bring an additional camp area featuring sutlers, the Christian Commission, Wheat’s Tigers Zouave unit CSA, U.S. Colored Troops, additional Federal generals, Confederate generals from Lee’s Lieutenants, and more to be confirmed.
Raw Zucchini Salad (Serves 2) 1 medium zucchini, shredded or sliced paper thin 6 cherry tomatoes, halved 3 tablespoons olive oil Juice of 1 lemon Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 3 to 4 basil leaves, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons freshly grated low-fat Parmesan cheese Instructions Layer the zucchini slices on two plates in even layers. Top with the tomatoes. Drizzle with the olive oil and lemon juice. Season to taste. Top with the basil and sprinkle with cheese before serving.
Setup for the encampment will begin on Thursday, June 27, with the arrival of the sutlers, the establishment of the military command headquarters and artillery in the military camp, and the placement of canvas for the living history, sutlers camp coordination, and the history of the boys of the Civil War. Food service this year will be provided by Atomic Hogs BBQ, which will set up and start the cooking process on June 27. The barbecue caterer will be ready to serve visitors when the event is open to the public. Visitors are welcome between 2 and 4 p.m. on June 28 and may watch the camps come together, ask questions, and visit with participants as long as they do not interfere with setup. food service will be in full operation during that time. The main event will be held on the weekend, with the encampment open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 30. Parking and admission will be free of charge, but a nominal fee will be charged for tours of the historic birthplace. The encampment will be divided into three fields: close to the birthplace, the lower lawn, and an adjacent battlefield. The living history area of the camp will be located closest to the birthplace, with authors, a blacksmith, a surgeon, Federal and Confederate generals, President Abraham Lincoln, and other dignitaries housed there. Guests may visit with Lincoln and the generals twice each day. Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee will receive callers on June 29. Lincoln’s private secretary, John Nicolay, will join the president on June 30. The lower lawn will house the military camps, which will include signal corps, infantry, dismounted cavalry, artillery, Gen. Longstreet’s command headquarters, and rifle and artillery demonstrations, alternating every half hour. A battle re-enactment will be held each afternoon on the battlefield. The sutlers’ camp will be situated at one end of the military camp. Civil War-era reproduction clothing and materials, including camp tables, boxes, and chairs, may be purchased by visitors as well as participants. The Christian Commission will also be camped at that end, and chaplains Alan and Faith Farley will conduct Sunday services there. Sheep and wool educators may be found at the lower end of the field, alongside the Black Confederates. Atomic Hogs BBQ will be located between the parking field and the living history camps, just off from the barn. Inside the end room of the barn will be Frank Vattelana Jr. with his collection of memorabilia, including photographs, from the war. Printed schedules will be available from several locations within each camp as well as from the food vendor. Visitors may also make donations to support the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society’s mission to continue to preserve the birthplace and to cover costs related to the hosting of the event. Books by J. Arthur Moore will be sold at the tent where 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem and a cadet will tell of the boys of the war, and proceeds will also help to offset the cost of the event. For more information about the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event, readers may contact coordinator Joel Moore at joemoore3@comcast.net or 717-351-5450. Callers should leave a message with call-back information. Moore strives to check messages daily and return calls within a day.
COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition -
Nathan Morales, a sophomore at Octorara High School and the son of Josh and Maggie Lee of Gap, has been granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). The weeklong economic education program offers students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the workings of the free market. Morales will attend Week 3 of the five, one-week sessions offered at Lycoming College. Pennsylvania teachers and counselors recommend the candidates, who are then reviewed by the PFEW staff. Admission is based on motivation to learn as demonstrated through essays submitted by the applicants. Those accepted are awarded scholarships, which cover all program costs, excluding a nominal registration fee and transportation to and from Williamsport. When students arrive for their one-week session in July or August, they are housed on the campus in dormitories, where they experience a taste of college life. During the week, students form companies that compete against each other for the equivalent of three years using a college-level simulation. The companies are evaluated on management skill, return on net assets, a marketing and advertising campaign, and a presentation to stockholders. Business volunteers serve as company advisers, suggesting available options and sharing their own experiences as students face many of the same decisions real executives confront every day. The competition is designed to help students learn the value of teamwork, communication, and leadership. PFEW also features dozens of speakers presenting seminars and discussions on topics like the relationships of business with labor, government, and consumers. Students also hear talks about business ethics, management and leadership skills, the economic system future, the global marketplace, money and banking, business operations, careers in business, and marketable skills. Now in its 40th year of operation, PFEW is entirely funded, taught, and staffed by the Pennsylvania business community. Its governing body is the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education, a nonprofit organization. For more information, readers may contact the foundation at 814-833-9576 or visit www.pfew.org.

Patriotic Concert To Feature Former Theater Organ By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Four years ago, the pipe organ at Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood, received some significant repairs. Around the same time, the organ at Little Britain Presbyterian Church also underwent some work. Union’s organist, Bob Trimble, was privileged to
perform on both organs within a few weeks. He related that the same song played on both instruments sounded different. “Tibias tend not to be present on church organs,” Trimble said as he sat at the console of Union’s organ, which includes a rank of the large, stopped, wood flute pipes named for the ancient Greek wind instrument also
called an aulos. Rather, tibias are characteristic of theater organs. “It’s a fairly rare organ. There were only 200 ever made,” pointed out Union member Marty Greenleaf. “It was repossessed from a theater.” “That’s how a lot of churches got these organs,” Trimble added. “They were cheap. It was a win-win.” See Concert pg 8

Campfires serve various purposes, from heating up simple foods to keeping wildlife at bay. Campfires also light up camps where people dine and sleep while providing much-needed warmth. Campers must always exercise caution with their campfires. The University of Vermont Medical Center says 80 percent of pediatric campfire burns resulted from day-old campfires. The National Interagency Fire Center notes that, in 2017, 88 percent of wildfires were caused by humans. When building campfires, several precautionary measures can ensure a safe time is had by all. Campground and other areas will post if the conditions are safe for a fire. Campers should heed all signs and not ignite a campfire if posted warnings say it is too dry and unsafe to do so. Campers should choose the right location by looking around and up to make sure that the fire will be in a safe location away from low-hanging branches or brush. A radius of at least eight to 10 feet around the fire should be clear of tents, food, chairs, and other items. To prepare a site, a small pit should be dug in which the fire can be housed. A ring of stones should be placed around the pit. Fuel should be added only as needed. The fire should be kept at a manageable size and height. Campers should not let it grow just to impress fellow campers, as it can spread and become a problem. Campers should beware of the duff, which is a layer of decomposing wood material that lies between pine needles and dirt on the forest floor. It is highly flammable, and some mistake it for dirt. Campers should be aware of duff near the campsite and extinguish any embers promptly. Campers should maintain a close watch and make sure at least one person is always tending to the campfire. Children and pets should be kept away. Campers should set a proper distance for pets and young children who may not understand the dangers of fire. The fire should be extinguished properly. A shovel and water should be kept nearby to drown the fire and embers. Campers should mix the ashes and water again to catch anything that may be smoldering. Water, dirt, or sand should continue to be added and stirred with a shovel until all material is cool. A former campfire should never be left hot. A decent perimeter should be checked around the campfire to ensure that no stray embers escaped. Campfires are an enjoyable part of the overall camping or outdoor wilderness experience. Safety is essential to help prevent forest fires and/or injuries.
Recreational Programs Set The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, most of which will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. A free junior tennis clinic for children and youths ages 6 to 13 will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the park tennis courts, 585 Golf Road, Lancaster. Jeff Kitsock, certified by the United States Professional Tennis Registry, will provide instruction. Volunteers from Tennis Central will assist. The clinic is recommended for beginner-level players. Participants should bring a racket if they have one, and a small supply of rackets will be available to borrow. Prizes for each
participant will be provided by Tennis Central. Marine Mammal Mania for people age 8 and up will take place on June 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Naturalist Emily Snyder will lead this program about the marine mammals that inhabit the planet. Participants will learn all about the habitat, behavior and communication of these creatures and play a game to simulate whale communication. The program will finish with a marine mammal craft that participants may take home. Paddle in the Park for people age 4 and up will be offered on Sunday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to noon, 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 877 Rockford Road, Lancaster. Naturalists Lisa Sanchez and Brandon Pentz will lead participants in trying their hand at paddling a canoe. Sign-up is available for one or more of the hourly time slots. Attendees will learn basic
paddling strokes, techniques, and safety instructions on land and then board canoes to practice skills in an area of flat water on the Conestoga River. Beautiful Butterfly will be held on June 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. The program is open to people of all ages, though it is geared toward children ages 4 to 8. With naturalist Vanessa Stager, participants will create butterfly crafts in the classroom and then head outside to the fields to search for butterflies and enjoy other butterfly activities. Attendees will learn about the beauty of butterflies and their unique features. Each child will receive a butterfly net to take home. A Firefly New Moon Walk for people of all ages will be offered on Tuesday, July 2, from 9 to 10 p.m. In the dark under the new moon, Sanchez will lead a walk, relying on the fireflies to show the way. Participants will be able to catch and release fireflies.
Summer Reading from pg 1 Attending programs at the library can count toward earning a patch. Weeklong afternoon programs at the Atglen Library include Music on the Screen, to be held from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, for children in grades six through eight. During the week, campers will learn about the film music industry and see what goes on behind the scenes, culminating in adding music to their very own silent film. “We have something going on every week,” Kehoe said. “We have Harry Potter Club on the fourth Wednesday of every month; we have story times for older kids that are themed for the patches on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. in July. We have craft programs, we have book bingo, we have a very full calendar
covering all ages.” While programming at the library is targeted at student readers, the summer reading program is open to people of all ages who would like to participate. “On the patch program, we have activities for pre-readers, and on the reading log, time spent with an adult reading with a child counts as well. That is a pre-reading activity that promotes reading skills as well,” Kehoe said. “We encourage that - it all counts.” Adults are also welcome to participate. “We don’t have any adult prizes this year, but they can earn a ticket toward a prize for their household,” Kehoe said. “Reading is important all the time for everyone, and parents need to model reading for their kids.”
Chicken Little Smokies Turkey Hams $1.69 lb. 12 lb. case
99¢ lb.
While there are themes to the patch awards, reading on any topic is eligible for the reading log. “You can read any kind of book for the reading incentives,” Kehoe said. “Sometimes, for recreational reading, we actually read at a lower level than we do for academic reading, and that’s fine. That builds skills, that builds vocabulary and that builds reading comprehension and enjoyment. We can’t forget about the enjoyment piece. The point is to make reading fun.” Atglen Public Library is located at 413 Valley Ave., Atglen. For more information about library activities, readers may visit www.facebook.com/Atglen PublicLibrary or www.atglen publiclibrary.org or call 610593-6848.

Accreditation from pg 1 The Chester County Department of Emergency Services received confirmation that it remains nationally accredited by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) for a further five-year period. According to the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, EMAP is the only accreditation process for emergency management programs in the nation, and Chester County was the first county in the state to achieve full accreditation for its emergency management program in 2014. EMAP accreditation recognizes the ability of emergency management programs to bring together personnel, resources, and communications from a variety of agencies and organizations in preparation for and in response to an emergency. The proven ability to measure these capabilities is also a key part of the EMAP accreditation. The EMAP process evaluates emergency management programs on compliance with requirements in 16 areas, including planning, resource management, training, exercises, evaluations and corrective actions, and communications and warnings. To maintain accreditation, Chester County had to once again demonstrate through self-assessment, documentation, and peer assessment verification that its program meets the Emergency Management Standard set forth by EMAP. The program accreditation managers were Emergency Management Department staff members Andrew Thurston and Thaddeus Kavanagh.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched its new community care program, implementing portions of the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act of 2018 (the MISSION Act), which both ends the Veterans Choice Program and
establishes a new Veterans Community Care Program. The MISSION Act is intended to strengthen the nationwide VA health care system by empowering veterans to have more options in their health care decisions. Under the new Veterans Community Care Program, veterans can
now work with their VA health care provider or other VA staff to see if they are eligible to receive community care. Eligibility for community care does not require a veteran to receive that care in the community; veterans can still choose to have VA provide their care. Veterans are eligible to choose to receive care in
the community if they meet the eligibility criteria. To help employees prepare for this transformation and others under the MISSION Act, Coatesville VA Medical Center dedicated the month of May to readiness. For more information, readers may call the center at 610-384-7711.

County Adopts C-PACE Program The Chester County commissioners recently approved a resolution calling for the county to participate in C-PACE, a clean energy financing program for commercial properties. C-PACE, which stands for Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy, is a financial tool for commercial property owners to obtain low-cost, longterm financing for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water conservation projects. C-PACE can facilitate a loan for a project by placing a voluntary lien on the property that repays the costs of
the upgrades. Pennsylvania is one of more than 30 states that has enabled CPACE. Four public-sector and nonprofit organizations have collaborated to develop the program in the state: Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (KEEA), Philadelphia Energy Authority, City of Pittsburgh Sustainability Commission, and Sustainability Energy Fund. Chester County is the first county in the southeastern Pennsylvania region to adopt this program. The Sustainable Energy Fund
