Animal Rescue Is A “Woerthy” Cause Veteran Aims To Help Others Through Horsemanship By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Three years after graduating from Solanco High School, Sara Hodgkiss entered the Army in October 2006 with the goal of serving country above self. Nearly seven years later in February 2013, she received a medical discharge and joined the ranks of disabled veterans. Hodgkiss has pressed forward, her medical condition notwithstanding. Last year, she launched a nonprofit equine/animal rescue, Woerth It Hollow, at her family’s farm with hopes of providing a safe and supportive place for veterans and other disabled individuals to discover every aspect of horsemanship and rescue farming. “This is my way of continuing this selfless service and helping my fellow

brothers and sisters in arms to do so themselves,” Hodgkiss explained. “Who can deny the added bonus of saving the horses as well?” Hodgkiss grew up at Woerth It Hollow, 259 Cooper Drive, Kirkwood, and was an avid horsewoman until around middle school. While she stopped competing in hunter/jumper events, she continued to work in the stables. After leaving the military, Hodgkiss found herself in a position to take over the farm. She spent several years finding a way to manage her health, and she fostered the idea of a rescue for animals and veterans. Hodgkiss had served a tour in Afghanistan, and she witnessed soldiers in her unit struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after deployment. Working with horses is one way that veterans can cope. “This is a place where veterans can See Animal Rescue pg 6
DAR Presents American History Awards Heather Pierson Trio To Perform Concert By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Work in American History Awards to local eighth-graders. Unlike the DAR’s annual American History Essay Contest, which ask students to complete essays that are judged by DAR members, the Outstanding Work in American History Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools. “We send an invitation to each middle school in Chester County to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “Each year, the school’s educators identify one student in the graduating eighth-grade class who has demonstrated achievement, interest and knowledge of our American history. “
The winners are announced at endof-year awards ceremonies held at the schools. “The recipients’ names are recorded and documented in our national and Chester County chapter records,” Dyer said. “The students receive a medal, a certificate and letter that is personally presented by a member of the DAR or by the educators of the middle schools.” Winners of the award in 2018 include the following students: Lucia Garzon - Collegium Charter School; Carolynne Eckert - Fred S. Engle Middle School; Ella Prieto - Fugett Middle School; Erin Dychdala - Holy Family School; Nicholas Gonzalez - Kennett Middle School; Gavin Que - Lionville Middle School; Jacob Steward - North Brandywine Middle School; Kayla Kittlitz - Octorara Junior High School; Chloe Lockwood - C.F. Identity theft is a serious concern that affects millions of people. The 2017 Identity Fraud Study, released by Javelin Strategy and Research, found that 15.4 million consumers in the United States were affected by identity theft of some form in 2016. In those instances, $16 billion was stolen. Protecting one’s identity is not as complicated as it may seem, and it can safeguard consumers against fraud and theft. People should password protect all smartphones and other digital devices. Many are used to transmit sensitive information and may store passwords and other data that connects to financial institutions. People should never click on links in unsolicited emails. Such

how to interact safely with a horse and how to groom it. “Before you ride (a horse), you have to care (for it),” said Nancy Snelgrove, who served in the Army with Hodgkiss and now visits Woerth It Hollow with her children. “It’s like with a vehicle; you have to maintain it and take care of it.” Allowing veterans to work directly with horses offers them a chance to be in charge. Folks who might otherwise be accustomed to taking orders now have the opportunities to make decisions. According to Hodgkiss, this helps them develop responsibility and step into leadership roles. At some point, Hodgkiss would like to train a veteran to take over the program so that it will continue to operate smoothly if her health changes. Hodgkiss would also like to develop a vocational rehabilitation component. Although the initial program is in its infancy, nearly a half-dozen veterans are among the successful
participants. “We have had at least five people completely turn around,” Hodgkiss said. “These horses have an ability that other people don’t.” In addition to helping veterans, Woerth It Hollow has rehabilitated three equines. Hodgkiss and program participants have worked with the horses to build trust around humans and to develop their manners. Gizmo and Stella are the farm’s permanent residents, but Hope will eventually be available for adoption. The farm hosted an open house for young farmers in June, and Hodgkiss would like to host another in July. She welcomes inquiries about
sponsoring the event. Additionally, anyone interested in volunteering at Woerth It Hollow - particularly anyone who can make repairs to the barn and contribute toward making the facility handicapped-accessible or work with the horses - is welcome to email WoerthItHollow@gmail .com. Financial contributions toward the cost of feed and veterinary care for the horses would be gratefully accepted. For more information about Woerth It Hollow, readers may send an email or find the farm on Facebook. A website for the organization is slated to be launched by Wednesday, July 4.

Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults. Although not all stress is bad, and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu. Repetitive stress may be the most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual. While not every approach works for everyone, five effective means to managing stress are offered. The American Psychological Association says research continues to confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an immediate effect that lasts a few hours. Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes. Men and women battling stress
