Youngsters look forward to learning during summer vacation at Science in the Summer. The program is offered at Chester County libraries, which provide the venue and volunteer support. On July 1 and 2, Parkesburg Library hosted the program at the Pfc. Robert Montgomery VFW Post 4480 in Parkesburg. Science in the Summer has been a popular fixture in the suburban Philadelphia area since 1986. The program is sponsored by GSK, and the Franklin Institute has been a partner and administrator of the program since 2012.

The free program offers hands-on learning experiences in classes divided by age group. Level One students are those who will enter second or third grade in the fall, and Level Two students are those who will enter fourth through sixth grades. Both groups have the basic curriculum, with the older students exploring topics in greater depth. This year, libraries have been given the option of offering one-hour classes for four days or two-hour classes on two days. Classes are taught by experienced, certified instructors such as Stephanie Smith, who is a teacher at Unionville High School. “I love it. I think it’s a nice change from my usual curriculum,” she See Science In The Summer pg 2
Stephanie Smith was the instructor of the Science in the Summer program offered on July 1 and 2 by the Parkesburg Library. The program is available at various local libraries this summer, and this year’s topic is “The Science of Me.”

After meeting in a private home, at a firehouse and mostly recently at King’s Highway Elementary School, Strong Faith Family Church now has a permanent home at 211 W. Stewart Huston Drive, Coatesville. The church is housed in an office space that is located in the Sikorsky Helicopter complex. In addition to the sanctuary, the site features elementary and preschool classrooms, a nursery, a room for nursing mothers and a coffee area where congregation members may enjoy fellowship before and after services. Television monitors in the building allow people to view
a live stream of the service. According to pastor David Longenecker, Strong Faith Family Church began as a small group Bible study with five people in August of 2006. In its first year, the church grew from five people to more than 60, and services were moved to See Church pg 16

Those were fun merit badges to earn. I would say Geocaching and Astronomy were my favorites.” For his required Eagle Scout service project, Logan installed a new sign at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen, which is Troop 20’s chartering organization. “Every Monday we have our troop meetings at the church, and the church was in desperate need of a new sign,” Logan said. “The church got in contact with a few sign companies, and they came up with the design. I assembled the sign and put it in the ground.” The Scout also installed lights and created a flower garden around the sign. “(The sign) has the name of the church and the times for worship and the pastor’s name,” Logan noted. “Those parts are interchangeable.” Logan said that an Eagle Scout project must demonstrate the Scout’s leadership skills. “For an Eagle project you are in charge of all of the planning,” he stated. “On one weekend we dug the holes for the new sign, which had to be approved by the borough (based on) the length and width of the holes. The next week we installed the sign.” He said that the work, which was completed in May of 2018, included removing the old sign, digging new holes with shovels and pouring in cement to secure the new sign. “Luckily the old sign wasn’t cemented in, but the new sign is cemented in,” said Logan.
Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) president Anne N. John has named 11 Pennsylvania lawyers to the 2019-20 class of the association’s Bar Leadership Institute (BLI). Among the class members is Chester County’s Patrice Turenne of McCausland Keen & Buckman PC, Devon. Representing Dauphin County are Tara Burns, Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott LLC, Harrisburg, and
“We mixed the cement in a wheelbarrow. Everything was done by hand.” As part of the project, Logan had to coordinate communication between all those involved. “The most (challenging part) was communicating between the four groups - the church, the sign company, the borough and the committee members who had to approve my project,” he said. Following completion of the project, Logan submitted a report of his work to the Chester County Boy Scout Council, and it was approved by an Eagle Board of Review. Logan’s Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony was held at the church in March. “I am aged out, but I am an adult leader in the troop. I am one of the Assistant Scoutmasters,” said Logan. Logan’s father, Cory, is the troop’s Scoutmaster. Logan will attend Delaware County Community College in the fall. He plans a career in game development and information technology. He added that his experiences in Boy Scouts have helped prepare him for the future. “Boy Scouts taught me leadership. I had no idea how to lead a group, and now I can do it with confidence,” he stated.
For his required Eagle Scout service project, Logan Peters installed a new sign at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen.

Chester County has strong historical connections to the lobbying campaign by suffragists. The county was the site of the first Pennsylvania women’s rights convention in 1852, and Chester County was the only county in southeastern Pennsylvania to support the (unsuccessful) state referendum in 1915 to give women the right to vote. To promote that unsuccessful referendum, Katharine Wentworth Ruschenberger of Tredyffrin Township commissioned a nearreplica of the Liberty Bell, which became known as the Justice Bell. A flatbed truck carried the Justice Bell, with its bronze clapper silenced by chains (to symbolize women’s lack of an electoral vote), to all 67 Pennsylvania counties before it returned to its home in West Chester at the courthouse. The clapper of the Justice Bell was finally unchained and rang out in September 1920 after the 19th Amendment was ratified.

Researchers from the 15 sites in the MHRGDN network will recruit patients with known genetic causes of neuropsychiatric disorders. They will then conduct in-depth genomic and clinical assessments of patients and their family members to explore the impact of genetics on neuropsychiatric disorders. The standardized data will be made available to research facilities throughout the country through the National Institute of Mental Health to accelerate further research. Of the county’s current elected positions - commissioners and row officers women outnumber men two to one, and the county’s president judge is a woman.

Church from pg 1 Wagontown Fire Company. The church had been meeting at King’s Highway for the past three years before moving into the new facility in the fall of 2018. Before the move, a team of church volunteers had to set up chairs in the school prior to each Sunday service and set up makeshift classrooms in the school gym. “The dividers that now create the walls around the sanctuary (here) were what we used to create children’s classroom in the elementary school,” Longenecker stated. “It would take us about two hours to set up (at the school). For our first service (here), we were up and running in five minutes. It was amazing.” All the chairs and educational materials used at the school were brought over to the new church office space. “They gave us one month to come in, and we built a stage and drum surround and did the planning and we got everything ready and prepared,” Longenecker said. The church facility also includes a Growth Track classroom, where members learn about their purpose in the church. “The Growth Track is made up of four steps. Lesson one gives people the things really need to know as (they start) their walk with God. The second lesson gives people an introduction to the church,” Longenecker explained. “Step three is a discovery process. (People) take some personality tests and spiritual gift tests and start discovering things about the way God has designed them. The fourth step shows them some of the values of our church and the different areas of service. We don’t want you serving where we have a need. We want you to serve where God wired you to serve. We want you in a place of your passions.” The church also offers small groups that that meet in members’ homes. “As things begin to grow and flourish, a small group can turn into a ministry in the church,” Longenecker said. The church recently formed a Service Team, which performs community service projects. So far, the team did yard work for a woman who was recently widowed, and it picked up trash in the office complex where the church is located. “(The congregation members) have a heart for each other,” Longenecker remarked. “The congregation is very mixed and diverse. We go from young to old to black to white, but we never set up to do that. Relationships keep forming and people keep loving each other, and it’s been really cool to see.” Strong Faith Family Church holds a Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Signs will direct visitors to the correct office building. For more information, readers may call 610-400-1188 or visit www.strongfaithchurch.com or www.facebook.com/StrongFaith.
