Students from three area schools have earned places on the United States team that will take part in the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing, China, on Thursday, July 19, through Wednesday, July 25. Katherine Baker of Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH), Eric Beery and Anthony Mazur of Phoenixville Area High School (PAHS), and Jarod Dagney and Ben Mellema of Octorara Area High School (OAHS), along with two alternates, Willetta Wisely from PAHS and Kyle Quinn from OAHS, were chosen for the local team at a selection competition at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) in March. On April 14, the five team members and two alternates traveled to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for the regional
competition, where they defeated a team from Princeton Regional Institute of Science and Math, a New Jersey STEM high school, to earn the right to represent the United States in the international competition. The students began to prepare for the regional competition when they started the school year last fall. They were presented with 17 physics problems that do not have readily available answers. Working in clubs after school and in their free time, they researched the problems and came up with solutions and presentations. Each school has a teacher involved in its club to help the students with their research and to prepare them for competition. Assisting teachers are William McWatters, OAHS; David Fenimore, CASH; and Jay Jennings, PAHS. Thirty-five teams will compete in the IYPT, where the five local students hope to be among the top 15 finishers. See Physics Competition pg 7

“We are very excited to bring The Ultramarines to Strasburg, especially since James (Wolpert) grew up in Strasburg and many here rooted for him when he was a semifinalist on NBC-TV’s fifth season of ‘The Voice,’” Kaufman said. Wolpert is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, and he is joined by drummer Aaron Shiflet and bassist Dustin Cain. “You’ll hear this talented trio merge psychedelic, punk, surf, and blues influences into a dynamic sound that will surely create a diverse live performance for our town,” Kaufman remarked. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Those who wish to eat a preshow picnic meal may use picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. “We encourage our visitors to patronize our food vendors,”” Kaufman commented, noting that an assortment of food, cold beverages, and Italian water ice will be available for purchase.

The second of five free concerts in the Sounds of Strasburg series will take place at the Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The open-air concert, which will be held in the park’s amphitheater, will feature local bands Featherburn and The Ultramarines. Featherburn will open the evening’s performances. This will be the band’s second gig at the park; the dynamic group was a hit when it performed there last year. Featherburn is a trio led by Strasburg resident John “Milo” Milosich, who plays accordion and guitar and sings. Tom Doorly is the bassist, and James Munster plays guitar. “Our visitors loved their quirky, accordion-powered, theatrical folk, punk, and eastern European rock show,” shared Dale Kaufman, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation. “Their show will be sure to please as it will be a high energy, cosmic folk-romp, party-starting set.” The Ultramarines will be the second act of the night.

Students Place In Math Competition
The Brandywine Base Ball Club (BBC) of West Chester will play a doubleheader on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 11 a.m. at East Goshen Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester, against the Diamond State Vintage BBC from Delaware. Games are free and open to the public. Spectators will be treated to the game of “base ball” as it was played in 1864, which means players, called “ballists,” will be dressed in historically similar attire and use period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls. In addition, players in vintage base ball do not wear gloves and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The Brandywine BBC, which formed in 2013, competes with
other vintage clubs in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. The team has grown in size and skill since its formation. “We have received many compliments from our opponents who are impressed with our improvement and our large roster,” reported team player Rick Stratton, noting that the club has six wins and eight losses to date. “We have a handful of new ballists this year, which has been really helpful when others are not available to play because of vacation, injury or other commitments.” Like other teams that play outdoor sports, players have been subjected to intense heat during their past several outings. “We (recently) played a doubleheader in 95-degree heat,” Stratton noted. “Luckily, the pace was fast, and we were able to finish both matches before 2:30 p.m.”

All home matches are played at East Goshen Park, and games take place in an open grassy area in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used as bases. Following the doubleheader, the team will compete in the Gettysburg Vintage Base Ball Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. “We are getting very excited for the upcoming Vintage Base Ball Festival in Gettysburg,” Stratton stated. “We will be playing the Cincinnati Red Stockings one of the most storied clubs in the country, dating back to 1869.” The next home game for the Brandywine BBC will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. against the Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick, N.J. A complete list of games is available at www.brandywinebbc.org/schedule. For more information about the team, readers may email brandywinebbc@gmail.com or visit www.brandywinebbc.org or

Physics Competition from pg 1 you’re talking about. I don’t think you get that experience anywhere else, especially in a traditional school setting,” Eric said. “One of the most important parts is the mathematical theory, so you have to come up with the mathematical models to demonstrate how the phenomenon occurs. There’s experimentation and there’s math theory, and you have to get all of those into the presentation, so it makes sense.” The international tournament has been held annually since 1988. A grant and funding from the school districts are helping to

All students on the team are recent graduates of their respective high schools. They all plan to continue their education in the fall: Jarod at the University of Delaware, Ben at Drexel University, Katherine at Ursinus College, Eric at Haverford College, and Anthony at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The team members all have a knowledge of each of the 17 problems, but each of them has specialized in two or three specific problems. Since the team was selected, the students have continued to work alone and together to prepare for the IYPT. The problems represent a wide range of physics topics. Ben took on the acoustic levitation problem, and with the help of other OAHS Physics Club members, created a working model that can keep very small, lightweight foam balls hovering in mid-air by the use of sound waves. Because the competition is being held in China, the team members are unable to take the equipment they have built to the IYPT with them. Instead, they will be prepared with data, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. For the IYPT competition, a team will present its findings on one of the problems to a panel of judges and two other teams. One of those teams will dispute that solution, and the other will review how well the solution and the dispute were presented, commenting on each. All three teams will be scored on their work. “It forces you to find a way to articulate your thoughts to someone who has no idea what

The fun run will be open to children age 10 and younger. They will run a half-mile beginning at the trailhead, and their race will take place after the 5K concludes. Every registered young runner will receive a wristband. Packet pickup will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at Solid Rock’s youth center, 34 E. State St., Quarryville. Tours of the facility will be available. Planning for the new event has been spearheaded by Mary Price, who felt God’s leading in the endeavor. She suggested the idea to Solid Rock Youth Ministries executive director Raeanne Nixon, who revealed that six months previous, she and board member Abbey White had kicked around and then rejected hosting a race because they did not feel qualified to plan it. Incidentally, Price has never planned a 5K event, but she has participated in numerous races, and her brother has organized many. She also has an enthusiastic team surrounding her. Annamarie Dixon has helped to organize 5K races, and fellow team members Trey and Danielle Little and Matt and Megan Boulden have access to useful expertise, skills, and resources. Community members have also offered their support, and Price noted that Solanco cross-country coach Craig Ausel will lend his timing equipment for the race. “The main purpose (of the race) is to raise awareness about Solid Rock,” Price said, explaining that she was impacted by videos about the youth organization that were shown at her church. “It would have been a beneficial resource for my family (when I was in school),” she added. During the school year, Solid Rock Youth Ministries offers after-school activities for students in kindergarten through ninth grade, and attendance each week averages about 70. Additionally, summer programs are available for students who will enter first through ninth grades this fall. The organization aims to provide a safe space for children and teenagers to grow in relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ. All activities are offered free of charge so that finances never cause a barrier to participation. “That’s why we’re raising money,” Dixon explained. “It’s neat to see how the Lord provides,” Nixon added. She shared that the organization would like to expand its offerings to include programs for high school students, and that will necessitate additional funding. Solid Rock also recently hired Corey Alfonso full time as the program director. “As Solid Rock is growing, we had a need to hire additional staff members,” Nixon said. Folks who register by Tuesday, July 31, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and will receive a discount on the entrance fee. Discounts for groups of five or more people are also available. In keeping with Pennsylvania’s long history of conservation, House Resolution 901 was recently adopted by the state House to recognize the 125th anniversary of the state park system, which is operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). The first State Forest Reserve was established with the purchase by the Commonwealth of 7,000 acres in Clinton County at the end of the 19th century. Today, 2.2 million acres of forestland, in 49 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, are sustainably managed by DCNR.
The parks offer a variety of activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and picnicking. Also in 1893, the Commonwealth set aside the hallowed land of Valley Forge, the site of the third winter encampment of Gen. George Washington’s Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, thereby creating the first state park in Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth presented that park to the federal government as a gift for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, but 121 other state parks have been created on nearly 300,000 acres of
land in the intervening 125 years since its creation. The resolution also commemorated the internationally recognized conservation efforts initiated in the Commonwealth by the General Assembly and Gov. Robert Pattison in 1893, and the contributions of Gifford Pinchot, Rachel Carson and many other individuals to promote and preserve the Commonwealth’s resources in the 125 years since. More information about the state parks is available at www.dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pag es/default.aspx.

ABATE from pg 1 Chester County to organize the Dwight Wallace Memorial Motorcycle Food Run for NSC. “We wanted to do something that was in memory of one of our fallen brothers in the chapter,” group member Tim Killinger said. Wallace’s mother, Arta Thomas, rode along with the bikers, wearing a memorial T-shirt with her late son’s picture. This year in particular was notable as the event was taking place 30 years after Wallace’s death. “I think (the event) is awesome; it’s absolutely wonderful,” she said. This year alone, ABATE members delivered approximately 23,000 pounds of goods to the NSC building in Oxford. “I wish (there was no need) to do it at all,” Killinger said. “Once a year, we get all this and load up their basement. Unfortunately, in about three months it will be empty again.” NSC board vice chair James Saltysiak appreciates the help ABATE provides. “It makes a huge difference. This is about a quarter of our entire year’s worth of food they do in this one drive,” he said. “This will last us about three months. In the summer, people (may not) think about people needing food. Saltysiak is appreciative of the effort that ABATE puts into the food drive. “They collect all June. It’s a ton of effort, and it makes a huge difference,” he said. “These guys give up their beautiful weekends. It’s a huge thing they do. They deserve a huge thank you.” For more information about ABATE of Chester County, readers may search for “Chester County ABATE” on Facebook. Donations Sought For Food Boxes With students home from school for the summer, even more nonperishable goods and toiletries are needed to fill the Community Food Boxes that have been installed throughout the community by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that was founded in the spring of 2017. The boxes are located along Business Route 30 between Downingtown and Coatesville. A plaque is posted on each box that reads, in part, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor.” In order to keep the program going, a core group of volunteers, called Box Buddies, keeps the containers restocked. The public may also contribute to the effort by donating items such as pasta, boxed macaroni and cheese, beef jerky, tuna and chicken salad kits, canned vegetables, peanut butter and jelly, as well as personal care items such as soap and shampoo, hand lotion, tissues and diapers. Donations of pet food will also be accepted. Items that should not be placed in the boxes include clothing and shoes, home-cooked items, items
