Cross-Country Bike Trip Benefits K-9 Partners By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Joseph’s People Offers Free Unemployment Guide By Francine Fulton

Joseph’s People, a nonprofit organization that provides support, guidance and job counseling services to the unemployed, is now offering a free guide for all who have lost their job. Titled “The Journey,” the document is available at www.josephspeople.org. The availability of “The Journey” was announced by Cheryl Spaulding, president emeritus, who founded Joseph’s People in 1995. “‘The Journey’ is our 92-page guide to finding a new job and restoring your life after job loss,” Spaulding said. “The book has been the backbone of Joseph’s People for more than 15 years and helped literally thousands of people. Until just a few months ago, the only way to obtain it was to become a member of Joseph’s People by joining one of our groups.”

She said that once it was decided to make the booklet free to everyone, it was updated and reworked. “(Unemployed people) are from all over the United States,” noted Spaulding. “The principles that it covers are germane to anyone who loses their job, no matter where they are.” Different sections of the document were written by people from the community, such as mental health professionals. “We have a lot of experts from the community who volunteered their time to write sections. It took almost a year to get it updated,” Spaulding noted. Spaulding said that the newly unemployed or those who had never lost a job before can particularly benefit from the book. “It covers mental health issues, financial issues and how to network. People don’t think about all that, but it’s part of the process,” she said. See Joseph’s People pg 3

Quarryville native Ron Storms recently moved to Oregon, where he started work as a contractor. As he traveled coast to coast to complete the move to a new home, he thought he could be doing something good along the way as well. Starting out from Lincoln City, Ore., on March 1, Storms biked cross-country with his Labrador retriever, Onyx, in tow as a fundraiser for Canine Partners for Life of Cochranville. Having lived in the area, Storms was familiar with Canine Partners for Life. He also has an empathy for helping those with disabilities, such as his aunt Jane Storms. That was the beginning of Onyx’s Great Adventure. “I decided I wanted to do something unique,” Storms said. “As I was moving my life back from Pennsylvania to

Oregon, I kept looking at the shoulders of the roads. I thought, ‘I’m going to walk this with Onyx,’ then ‘No, I’m not going to do that to his hips. It’s too much.’ Then I had the idea of doing a covered wagon.” The idea to bike cross-country with the dog took planning and preparation by Storms and his partner, Meghan Shreiner. The dog could not be expected to keep up with the bike, so a bike trailer was prepared for Onyx. Since the trip was likely to be more than one dog could comfortably handle, Phoenix, also a black Lab, came along as well, taking over for Onyx from time to time. Even with two dogs, there were going to be times when the weather was too harsh or the traffic situation too dangerous for a dog to ride in the bike trailer. Instead, a life-size wooden sculpture of a dog took the spot in the trailer. In all, rider, bike, trailer and dog weighed See Bike Trip pg 3

The POINT Nears Completion Of Expansion By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The Parkesburg POINT youth center is nearing the completion of its final expansion stage. The project, which will complete the complex, includes the installation of a new outdoor skatepark and basketball court, as well as the

repaving of the large parking lot and the addition of buffer landscaping. “We realized it would be several phases before we could get it to where we wanted it for our program,” said Dwayne Walton, executive director of The POINT. “Now we’re at the place where we want to finalize everything.” See The POINT pg 8

Those interested in fostering or adopting an animal are asked to email Schiller at Babushkasanimalrescue@gmail.com or contact her through www.facebook.com/ BabushkasAnimalRescue. “We are completely foster-based, so there is no public facility,” explained Schiller. “Specifically, I really could use fosters for kittens for teaching socialization. I do have an application that people need to complete. I require vet references and personal references, which is part of the application process.” Photos of animals ready for adoption can be seen on the Facebook page. Among those seeking a forever home is Brandon, a 5-yearold male shih tzu. “He is very friendly and loves people and other dogs,” noted Schiller. “He is easygoing and would be suitable for an older person or couple. He is fully vetted neutered, vaccinated, etc.” In addition to seeking fosters and folks ready to adopt, the new rescue is in need of

before they become problems.” Spaulding pointed out that people may read the document online, print it out in its entirely or just print the section that applies to their needs. “This is a really important resource for anyone in trouble because of job loss,” she said. “We hope by opening this up to all, we can help many more people.” Joseph’s People was founded at St. Joseph Church in Downingtown. It is named after Joseph, the carpenter father of Jesus, who is the patron saint of workers. The organization is completely run by volunteers, and all services are offered free of charge. about 300 pounds. Shreiner drove the support vehicle that followed Storms all the way. A wooden cap on the bed of their pickup truck was decorated with information on the trip and the fundraiser as well as designs with a special, personal meaning. Each of the paw prints on the sides of the cover represents one of Storms’ dogs that has passed away, while angel wings symbolize important people in his life who have passed away. The cross-country trip included extreme conditions including snow, the slopes of the Rockies, and dangerous road conditions. Storms recalled a day in Nebraska as the worst of the trip, where he traveled 37 miles in a headwind so strong that if he stopped pedaling, he found himself being pushed backward. “It took me nine hours. It never stopped. It was like dragging 85 pounds of concrete. I had to pedal downhill,” Storms said. Along the way, there were interviews and events to help encourage donations, and a Facebook page and website recorded daily progress over 2,700 miles through 10 states. The first section of the booklet covers the gamut of emotions that people may experience when losing their jobs, such as shock, denial, anger and depression, which eventually can lead to acceptance and action. There is also a section devoted to maintaining physical and emotional well-being when unemployed. One section titled “The Job Search Process” covers resume writing and how to write a cover letter. It also offers tips on job interview skills. Also covered are various websites used during internet job searches, as well as the importance of networking at local job fairs. Interspersed throughout the booklet are inspirational quotes, prayers and passages from Scripture. The booklet concludes with a section about when a person finally is able to return to work, asking him or her to reflect on the journey and think about what they learned during the experience. “There is absolutely no faith-based guide like this that I am aware of anywhere,” Spaulding commented. “It takes a person from the day they lose their job through to a new position. When Lisa Colon’s son, Isreali, went to Army boot camp in 2016, Lisa looked for other area mothers who would understand that experience and offer answers and support. “I have a friend at church whose son was in the Marines, but he was out by then,” said Lisa. When Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other. Some of the members of the Fort Riley group were part of National Blue Star Mothers of America Incorporated, a group of mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans. “(National Blue Star Mothers) was founded in 1942 when someone put an ad in the newspaper calling for moms of armed service members,” explained Lisa. “When they got more than 1,000 responses, they decided to form an official group.” National Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered by Congress in 1960. Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group. Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range, they had to ask that group’s permission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us,” said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “We became the founding

The Pennsylvania Library Association announced that Chester County Library has been recognized as a Gold Star Library. In achieving the PA Forward Gold Star designation, the Chester County Library has demonstrated a commitment to helping citizens improve their quality of life and achieve greater success in all vital roles of life and providing programs to enhance five identified types of knowledge or key literacies believed to be essential to success: basic, information, civic and social, health, and financial. PA Forward, launched statewide in 2012, works through the five key literacies to assist individuals in enhancing their overall quality of life. To continue helping libraries use PA Forward to demonstrate all their libraries offer, in January 2017, the association kicked off the Star Library program statewide.

The Star Library recognition offers support to libraries that participate and integrate PA Forward’s literacies in their programming activities. Those libraries are recognized for meeting benchmarks within the bronze, silver, and gold star levels of the program. While one star is awarded for both the bronze and gold levels, a total of five stars are awarded in the silver category - one silver star for each of the five literacies of PA Forward. For more information, including a complete listing of all libraries participating in the program, readers may visit www.paforwardstarlibraries.org.

mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms,” said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the symbol of Lancaster County. The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents. On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute,” the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. More information about the Red Rose Blue Star Moms may be found at www.redrosebluestarmoms.org or by searching for “Red Rose Blue Star Moms” on Facebook.

Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications. To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made

Geisinger has announced its has formed a partnership with Medial EarlySign, which creates machine learning-based solutions to aid in early detection and prevention of high-burden diseases. Medical EarlySign is partnering with Geisinger and its Steele Institute for Health Innovation to develop and deploy a suite of machine learning-based solutions to identify individuals at risk for a range of chronic and high-burden diseases. Partnering with Geisinger’s Steele Institute for Health Innovation, EarlySign’s LGIFlag solution will be deployed to help health care practitioners identify patients who are at risk for significant lower GI disorders. LGI-Flag is an advanced software solution that analyzes medical data, including changes in routine blood tests, to flag those who will benefit from further evaluation. Reflecting the Steele Institute’s efforts to transform health care delivery by implementing solutions that improve health, patient experience, care delivery and affordability, the partnership will also explore additional opportunities to benefit patients and their care providers. LGI-Flag has been used in health care systems around the world since 2015 to identify patients at risk for lower GI disorders associated with chronic occult bleeding. The technology will form the basis for Geisinger and EarlySign to address similar opportunities with other acute and chronic diseases. The partnership will make use of Geisinger’s infrastructure, data assets and care teams.

available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the

prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing

education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription. more capable skaters. The indoor (one) was more for younger kids,” Walton said. Across the parking lot, the building that once housed a strip of shops now contains a chapel, a boxing training gym and classrooms that are fully outfitted with computers for youngsters to keep up with their academic work. The Thorndale-Downingtown Rotary is donating a gaga pit. There is also a workshop where young people can learn woodworking and electrical repair. They can even learn bicycle repair using donated bikes and they get to keep their completed project. “We have volunteers come in who are part of the industry that teach the kids. We want kids to see they can do things with their

hands,” facilities manager Bud Herman said. “We’re not really interested in making (them) experts in these areas, but what we want to do is get these kids interested so they will go to the high school tech classes and the tech schools and further their education.” The final phase of construction is underway, with work in progress on the skatepark where concrete moguls, ramps and rails will provide challenges and fun for all levels of skateboard riders. The skatepark and the adjoining basketball court will be fenced with access available only through the main building of The POINT. The skatepark is being named in memory of John Gillen, a young man from the community who died from an accidental over-

dose at the age of 21 in July 2011. “John was a student here at The POINT. He was a really great kid who always worked with other students and helped the younger ones learn to skate. Skaters would credit him with giving them their first experience and teaching them to skate,” Walton said. Transportation is available to take all youngsters home each evening after The POINT closes. There is a schedule of bus transportation within a 5-mile radius of The POINT that reaches in different directions each day so that youngsters in Atglen, Christiana, Gap and Coatesville areas can visit The POINT. The POINT has been able to make all renovations to its Parkesburg property without taking out a loan. The hope is to complete

the final part of the expansion, which is a $100,000 project, with the help of donations. “The vision is what we’ve always intended. It’s coming together. We’ll be able to address the needs of more and more young people throughout the year by being able to have outdoor facilities for them to play,” Walton said. “At the end of this project, we’ll have a fully functional indoor-outdoor facility serving the needs of our community.” For more information about The POINT, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, readers may call 610-857-3393 or visit www.parkes burgpoint.com or www.facebook.com/ parkesburg.point. Information about donating to The POINT for its projects is available at www.parkesburgpoint.com/give.

The POINT offers boys and girls ages 8 to 18 a free, safe place to go in a faith-based environment. So far, The POINT has renovated its main building, creating welcoming spaces in which children can enjoy games, video gaming, sports and academics. The
