Logan Hall, who has been involved in 4-H since he was in elementary school, was recently named an extension educator by the Chester County 4-H Youth Development Program. Hall, who started his new job on July 9, grew up in Cumberland County, located near Harrisburg. “4-H has been a part of my life since age 9 or 10,” said Hall. “I started in Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club and then joined the Cumberland Farm Stock Club. I grew up in town, but my aunt had eight acres outside of Carlisle, which is where my agriculture and livestock experience comes from.” During his youth, Hall showed market goats, breeding goats, market hogs, breeding sheep, market sheep and poultry, among other livestock. “We also raised turkeys,” he noted. Hall continued in 4-H throughout his

career at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. “In the Pennsylvania 4-H youth program, you can (participate) from age 8 to 18. I continued into my freshman year of college,” he recalled. “Then, once I aged out, I started a collegiate chapter. It is very different from a traditional 4-H Club because we don’t carry a project; it was more service-based.” Prior to joining the Chester County staff, Hall was a 4-H youth development educator in the Penn State Extension of Cumberland County office and he served as the deputy communications director, as well as acting communications director, during his tenure at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. In his new role, Hall joins extension educator Toni Stuetz to provide educational programs and activities for youths throughout Chester County. “The opportunity to work with 4-H in Chester County aligns with my animal

Just like Toni, I will put together camps for the public to come to and for 4-H members.” Hall recently toured the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook for the first time. The 4-H Center includes an outdoor riding ring with a full course of jumps, as well as a pole building. The main building has a large conference area, with restrooms and showers. “It was my first opportunity to see the property,” he said. “It illustrates the dedication people have to the 4-H program in Chester County.” The public is invited to meet Hall and other staff members from the extension office in Chester County during an open house at the Chester County 4-H Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. See 4-H Educator pg 5

As part of yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary, Episcopal Church of the Trinity in Coatesville offered a special Civil War-era liturgy in the tradition of 1868, the year the church was founded.

“Welcome to 1868 and pretend that I’m not a woman,” said the Rev. Sherry Deets, rector, when greeting congregation members and guests during the special Sunday service held on July 15. In honor of the event, Deets and congregation members were dressed in period

attire. Deets pointed out that the service followed the 1868 Book of Common Prayer and used songs and the language from that time period. “The service is a little different than what we’re used to,” she stated. “The language is very penitential. Enjoy the chance to learn what they did back in 1868.” Later, Deets also explained that the order of the service was slightly different. “Even though we did a recessional (today), there was no processional and recessional back then and less music,” she said. “We sang ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ at the end. (In the modern service) that would normally be done at the beginning. “It was also less participatory,” she added, noting that she appreciates that the church’s modern-day services are interactive. Anniversary committee chair Joe Kirkner praised the congregation for dressing in Civil War-era garb. “This is typical of our congregation. If you ask them to do something, they will,” he stated. He also recognized special guests in attendance, including pastor Emerson Cottrell from St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Coatesville. “He is in the church building that used to be our Episcopal church,” noted Kirkner. Also, in attendance was Mike

Lemodetis, who portrayed the Hon. John Geary, 16th governor of Pennsylvania, who was in office during 1868. The sermon was delivered by the Rev. Joan Wylie, deacon. “There were very few deacons in those days, and if there were a deacon, it most certainly would not have been a woman,” she noted. Following the service, a special luncheon featured food that would have been served during the time, including ham salad and cucumber sandwiches and cherry strudel. Mark Rimple provided lute music during the reception. Additional anniversary events are being planned at the church this fall. Historical displays will be exhibited in the church’s Stone Hall from Monday, Sept. 24, through Friday, Oct. 12. Displays will depict the history of Coatesville, the church and the surrounding area. On Thursday, Sept. 27, guest speaker Ross Kersey will present “The History of Coatesville.” Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. with light fare provided, and the presentation will begin at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m., Eugene DiOrio, history adviser for the Graystone Society, will present a program about the history of the church. A reception will follow. On Friday, Oct. 5, the Coatesville Area Senior High School gospel choir will perform in the sanctuary, followed by a reception. The celebration will culminate on Saturday, Oct. 6, with an anniversary dinner at the Coatesville Moose Lodge and on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9:30 a.m. with an anniversary celebration worship service officiated by the church’s bishop, the Rt. Rev. Daniel G. P. Gutiérrez. In November, the church will install a time capsule with artifacts from the 150th anniversary celebration to be opened in 2118. The first Sunday service of the Episcopal Church of the Trinity was held in Coatesville on Oct. 4, 1868, led by the Rev. George G. Field, who was the first rector

Local libraries are keeping learning alive throughout summer vacation time with Science in the Summer. This year, the popular program, themed “The Science of Space,” aims to help children learn more about the sky above them. “I think it’s fun to learn in the summer to keep my brain educated for the next year,” said 10-yearold Jill Chase, who recently took part in Science in the Summer at the Oxford Public Library. Both Jill and her brother took the classes this year. “Every summer we do this. It’s a great free program, sponsored by the Franklin Institute, that allows students to get a little more exposure to some science curriculum,” said Jill’s mother, Nancy Chase.

Science in the Summer has been a popular fixture in the suburban Philadelphia area since 1986 and is sponsored by a global pharmaceutical company. The Franklin Institute has been a partner and administrator of the program since 2012. Area libraries serve as host sites, providing a location and volunteer support for the weeklong experience. The free program includes four days of classes divided by age group. Level One students, who will be entering second or third grade in the fall, enjoy hands-on learning targeted to their age range, while Level Two students, entering fourth through sixth grades, explore the same topics in greater depth. The program is an exciting week for students, with classes

“We change the topic every year. The Franklin Institute has brought some new topics in. Last year was ‘Science of Sports,’” said Korzec. “I think it’s a nice roundabout way for the kids to see areas they may not learn in school. I imagine the topic will tickle many of their fancies.” Science in the Summer was offered July 9 through 12 by the Oxford, Parkesburg and Atglen libraries. The program is scheduled to be held at the Avon Grove Library from July 23 through Thursday, July 26. “It’s an honor to come to the libraries. They treat us really well,” Korzec added.

taught by experienced, certified teachers such as Joe Korzec, who recently retired from teaching seventh-grade science at Springton Lake Middle School. “I’ve been doing Science in the Summer coming up on 15 years,” he said. “It prevents summer slide to a degree. From the time (students) leave school in June until the time they go back in September, there’s a lot lost in between. (Through Science in the Summer), they get to refresh their memories, shake those neurons together and put together some good thoughts.” One of the major attractions of Science in the Summer is that children learn through active, handson experience. In “The Science of Space” curriculum, students explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity.

“Right now, it is web-based,” LaRose explained. “The big goal of this fundraising initiative is to get a mobile app so people can download it and use it on (their) phones.” To learn more about the app, readers may visit www.theradarproject.org/the-radar-app/. For LaRose, 26, this will be his third marathon. “I did the Philadelphia Marathon in 2013 and then I did a marathon in Korea, when I was in the Army,” he reported. “My goal for the Philadelphia Marathon (in 2013) was to make it under four hours. I made it by two minutes. I ran a 3:58.” LaRose became familiar with The RADAR Project through a friend who knew the organization’s co-founder, Leslie Holt. LaRose explained that when he signed up for the marathon, a 26.2-mile race, he had the option of raising funds for a charity, and he selected The RADAR Project. “ When you sign up on the marathon website, you can link it to which charity you choose,” LaRose noted.

Holt, who founded The RADAR Project with attorney Meri López in 2013, explained that the map on the website can identify a “hot spot” of illegal activities, such as a college campus. “Police will and are using it,” Holt said. “We’re hoping the more populated the map gets the clearer the picture will be. Even though it’s anonymous, it gives (law enforcement) a barometer of what is going on.” She said the website aims to empower victims by giving them a place to share their stories. “Every person should have a voice,” said Holt. “When people share their stories, that’s how other people learn. (The phrase) ‘You are not alone’ may be overused, but it is the truth. To see it in all those little pins - you can start feeling you are not completely isolated.” Future plans for the organization include developing a registry of volunteers to help victims. “Say a victim has to show up for court and doesn’t want their family involved. They can go

onto the registry and ask if someone can go with them,” Holt explained. In the meantime, LaRose is running several times a week in preparation for the marathon, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 18. “At most, I run four to five times a week. You start off with low mileage, and each week that goes by you increase,” he said.

“You might have three short- to mid-distance runs, and, on the weekend, you do a longer run.” He said he plans to run the upcoming marathon at a steady pace. “When you start off, your body is full of adrenaline, (but) I start slow. If you come out of the gate too fast, you (burn out),” he said. “You try to keep the same pace throughout.” LaRose would like other

The event will include a special Patronal Festival Eucharist, as well as a visit from the Rt. Rev. Daniel G. P. Gutiérrez, Diocesan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese

of Pennsylvania. It will be Gutiérrez’s first visit to St. James. The celebration will begin at 6:45 p.m. with light refreshments and a time of fellowship in Bartholomew Hall, where attendees will be able to meet and welcome Gutiérrez. The Rite II service will begin at 7:30 p.m., and it will include Holy Eucharist and organ music. “Sen. (Andy) Dinniman will also be at the event,” noted anniversary committee member Cathy Weisser. “He will be giving the church a (certificate of recognition).” Other local dignitaries will also be in attendance. Weisser said that the kickoff event will mark the beginning of a yearlong anniversary celebration, which will run through July 2019. The public is invited to attend the

upcoming event, as well as others that will be planned throughout the year. “We would love for people to come and worship with us,” said Weisser, noting that church members recently installed a banner in front of the building announcing the anniversary. “We are in the same historical building (from 175 years ago), but it has had modifications and renovations through the years.” According to a written history of the church, St. James’ Church began meeting in the fall of 1842, when the Rev. Gregory Bedell, then rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity in West Chester, conducted a worship service for a group of Episcopalians living in Downingtown at the home of Dr. Andrew Wills. That same year, the Episcopalians invited the Rev. William Augustus White of Boston to come to Downingtown to serve as the rector of a new Episcopal church to be named after the Apostle James. The cornerstone of the new church building was put into place in June of 1843, and the church was completed and reliefauction.org, the proceeds from the auction support Brethren Disaster Ministries and Children’s Disaster Services, which are programs of the Church of the Brethren. dedicated in October 1843. The original church building was simple, with no steeple or stainedglass windows. In 1863, the church underwent a major expansion and renovation project, which included the addition of two new wings and a sanctuary, a steeple and memorial stained-glass windows. Through the years, an office wing and parish hall were also added to the original church building and the church became home to St. James’ Preschool and the St. James’ Church Thrift Shop. The summer schedule of Sunday services at St. James includes Holy Eucharist, Rite I, at 7:45 a.m., which is a spoken service with no music, and Holy Eucharist, Rite II, with traditional music at 10 a.m. A time of fellowship and a coffee hour are held in Bartholomew Hall at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. John Wymonds is the church rector. For more information about the church, readers may call 610-269-1774 or visit www.stjameschurch.ws or www.facebook.com/stjameschurch downingtown.

Tandoori Turkey Burgers CYF Staff Members Receive Recognition Many people feel no backyard barbecue is complete without staples like hot dogs and hamburgers. But grill masters need not feel beholden to such fare if their hearts and stomachs desire something less traditional. One of the joys of grilling is that there is a seemingly endless array of foods that can be cooked over an open flame. Grilled foods can be lean and healthy while still providing that unmistakable flavor unique to the grill. People who want to expand their grilling horizons while still providing juicy, delicious fare can try the recipe for Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener and The Grill” (Running Press). Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes (Serves 4) Turkey Burgers 1 lb. ground turkey 1/4 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs 2 T plain yogurt 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp fine kosher or sea salt Cumin Yogurt Sauce 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1/2 tsp ground cumin Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Toppings 2 large red onions, thickly sliced 2 large beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced 4 seeded hamburger buns Olive oil, for brushing Kosher or sea salt and freshly

ground black pepper to taste 1 cup shredded lettuce 2 T chopped fresh cilantro Instructions: 1 - Prepare a medium-hot fire in the grill. 2 - In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, yogurt, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and salt until well-blended. Form into four 3/4-inch-thick patties. 3 - For the cumin yogurt sauce, combine the cumin and yogurt together in a bowl until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 4 - Toss the shredded lettuce and cilantro in a bowl and set aside. 5 - Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink inside and an instantread thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty. 6 - Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. 7 - To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1/4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.

The Chester County commissioners and the director of the county’s Department of Children Youth & Families (CYF) have announced the statewide recognition of CYF staff members for their efforts to place children eligible for adoption into permanent loving homes. At this year’s Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Adoption and Permanency Conference, Shadell Quinones, manager of the CYF Adoption Unit, was awarded Permanency Professional of the Year for her commitment to finding permanent homes for children through adoption. Quinones has been a part of Chester County’s CYF team for 18 years. In addition to adoption and post-adoption support, she heads the National Adoption Day program for the county every year. CYF supervisor Kristin Terrell and caseworker Briana Stinson were part of a group that was

Eighth-Graders Graduate A total of 64 students graduated from Pope John Paul II (PJP II) Regional Catholic Elementary School on June 5 during a Mass at St. Peter Church in West Brandywine. The theme for this year’s eighth-grade Eucharistic celebration and commencement ceremony was “Go Make a Difference.” Father Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Church, was the primary celebrant. Following the Mass, students were commended for academic achievements and awarded more than $27,000 in scholarship money for high school. A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it is also worth noting that push-

ing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function. Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it is no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the im-

mune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically package frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in season. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu, or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells,

which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exerciserelated changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it is important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it is reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research. The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

National Korean War Veterans Day will take place on Friday, July 27. The event will take place on the anniversary of the July 27, 1953, armistice signed by North Korea, China, the United States and the United Nations, suspending all hostilities. In honor of the Americans who served during that time, and especially those who died, the President has proclaimed July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Day. He encouraged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities honoring all Korean War veterans.
