All Invited To Knit And Natter By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Those who know how to knit or who want to learn are invited to knit with friends at the twice monthly Knit and Natter meetings held at the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana. Library director Trish Vandenbosch formed the group nearly three years ago in response to requests. The name of the group refers to the fact that participants chat as they knit. “A couple of people said they wanted to learn how to knit. I got the knitters that I knew and asked them what time they wanted to meet,” she said. “They’ve been getting some new people. That’s always exciting.” There is no obligation to attend every meeting, and there is no preregistration required, so the group may vary in size from a few to a half-dozen or more. Some people come only a few

times to learn new things, while others make the meetings a part of their regular routines. Avid knitter Toady Kennel was already part of a knitting a group at Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church, where members make a variety of knitted items for charitable organizations. She continues these knitting projects at the library during Knit and Natter, working on hats, baby blankets and caps, hand warmers or whatever is needed. Kennel enjoys the company she finds at Knit and Natter and the helpfulness of fellow knitters. “If we get stuck on a pattern or make a mistake, we help each other out. It’s fun to knit together to see what everybody’s doing,” she said. “Some do both knitting and crocheting. We teach each other patterns and help change it up a little bit.” See Knitting Group pg 5

The fifth annual clothing giveaway hosted by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 7 a.m. to noon at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, 4 miles east of Quarryville on Route 372. Why open so early? “’Cause they’re here at 6 o’clock, waiting,” said MOPW member Marlene Fromm. The giveaway was created following the example of a church in Willow Street, and it has continued to be popular. “People are shopping for school See Clothing Giveaway pg 2

MOPW Plans Fifth Clothing Giveaway

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church will host a clothing giveaway on Aug. 17. Displaying a small sample of the items that will be available are (from left) Shirley Miller, Marlene Fromm, Linda Farmer, and Nancy Harnish.

As a special event during the Summer Reading Program, Princess Brooke from Dutch Wonderland paid a visit to Moores Memorial Library in Christiana on July 23. Princess Brooke, portrayed by Rebecca Rand, came to read to the children and engage them with interactive fun. “It’s so wonderful because we get to read our book ‘Beyond the Castle Walls,’ which is about Dutch Wonderland and all of my royal friends,” Rand said, always remaining in character. “(By) reading, we get to take a trip around the world, and we learn so much, and the kids get to interact with our story. See Princess Story Time pg 9

Rebecca Rand (second from right), who portrayed Princess Brooke from Dutch Wonderland, recently visited Moores Memorial Library in Christiana to read to children as part of the Summer Reading Program. Sisters (from left) Savanna, Emma and Olivia Proud enjoyed meeting the princess.

clothes, and it’s inexpensive,” explained MOPW member Shirley Miller. She noted that clothing, shoes, and accessories will be free of charge, but attendees are invited to bring donations - either nonperishable food or cash - for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. The MOPW members have been collecting clothing and other items from church members and from supporters in the general community. Nancy Harnish related how a personal shopping trip to Waltman’s Hidden Treasures in Buck has resulted in a partnership between the consignment shop and the church. The store had been looking for a charitable way to dispose of unsold children’s clothes, and when the owners learned that clothing for youngsters is in high demand at the giveaway, Waltman’s signed on to donate items. “God sent me there that day,”

Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse, has been thinking for some time about getting a tortoise for the library. When Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary presented “Rocketing Reptiles” at the Salisbury Township Branch Library, 835 Houston Run Drive, Suite 220, Gap, on July 1, O’Sullivan decided to ask Rothacker if he had any tortoises in need of rescuing. Rothacker told O’Sullivan he had received an email just that morning from someone who needed help placing a 3-year-old Russian tortoise. “(The owner) was looking for a home (for the tortoise) because they traveled a lot,” explained O’Sullivan. “I said (to Rothacker that) I wanted to adopt it, but I will let it live (at PVPL).” O’Sullivan is responsible for the tortoise. “No library funds are being used (for its care),” she explained. “It’s for education.” O’Sullivan rehomed the tortoise, who happens to be female, in a terrarium in an open area of the library. She explained that the tortoise should grow to be 10 to 12 inches long and that she could live to be 60 years old.

“She is very low maintenance,” said O’Sullivan, who explained that the heat lamp that runs over the top of the terrarium is one of the most important facets of care. “It’s on a timer, so she gets 12 hours of heat, and then it is off for 12 hours,” explained O’Sullivan. In the terrarium, the tortoise’s food bowl is filled with a colorful combination of vegetables. “She loves kale and carrots,” said O’Sullivan, who explained that a staff member brings kale from her organic farm for the tortoise. O’Sullivan will come in to tend the tortoise when the library is closed, and she will take her home with her when inclement weather threatens. Staff members have lined up to volunteer to care for the tortoise when O’Sullivan goes on vacation. The tortoise seems to have everything she needs to live a long and healthy life in the library, but she does not have a name. O’Sullivan and the rest of the library staff are hoping to remedy that by holding a naming contest that will run through the month of August. O’Sullivan explained that the staff brainstormed a number of names. “There are Russian names or names based on book characters,” said O’Sullivan, who said

Two young patrons of the Pequea Valley Public Library enjoyed getting to know the library’s new pet tortoise. A naming contest for the 3-year-old female Russian tortoise is being held throughout the month of August. the staff intends to narrow the names down to five choices for voting. Suggestions that may make the final cut include Myrtle, Junie T., Tasha, Tillie, Miss Marple, and Shelly. Library patrons who wish to vote may ask for a ballot at the circulation desk at PVPL. Completed ballots will go into a jar, and by Sunday, Sept. 1, the votes will be counted to decide the tortoise’s name. In addition, voters will be asked to write their names on the ballots, and one will be pulled from the jar to win a special visit with the tortoise in the library before hours when

she is allowed to roam free. The winner will also have a photo taken with the tortoise. “Come to the desk and get a ticket,” O’Sullivan encouraged. PVPL is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The Salisbury branch is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Salisbury is closed on Saturdays, and both locations are closed on Sundays. Readers who would like more information about the libraries may visit https://pvpl.org.

Jennifer Barton often works on items for family and friends. She enjoys the friendly company of knitting with the group. “I get to talk with friends, and it gets me out,” she said. “One reason I come is I can sit here for two hours and concentrate on my knitting and not be interrupted.” “You get with a group of people that all have a common cause and you knit,” added Deb Stanley, who was knitting a dish cloth as a gift for a neighbor. “I knit for other people, for charity and for my health.” “I like getting together with the ladies here, knitting, crocheting or whatever I’m doing,” Bonnie Ford said while crocheting a baby blanket. Most of the group are veteran knitters who learned as children or teenagers. “I

learned when I was really young, when I was about 8. Then I didn’t knit for years,” Stanley said, noting that knitting does take some time to learn, but it is not as complex to start as it may seem. “I think if (beginners) do something easy to start with, they won’t get discouraged.” Knit and Natter meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, beginning at 1 p.m. Upcoming meetings will be held on Wednesdays, Aug. 7 and 21. Participants should bring their own yarn and needles. “We would like more people to join our group,” Vandenbosch said. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Dance instructor Katherine Hansen explained that the library’s children’s area will be utilized to hold the dance. “This is an afterhours event, so we’re going to be using the children’s side of the library and moving chairs and tables into the stacks so it will be a rectangular space,” she said. Participants are encouraged to bring their own labeled water bottles. Light refreshments will be provided during the breaks. Hansen said that no experience is needed, and no partners are required, although bringing a friend is recommended. “If you can walk forwards and backwards and count to eight, you are ready for folk dancing,” she stated. “It is meant to be social. That means that the students will have opportunities to move around and interact with different people throughout to the night. No one will be paired off. No partners are required, but it’s more fun with a friend. There will be an opportunity to learn something; it’s not the same pressure as a high school dance.” Hansen said that she did not discover dance until after high school but would have loved to take up the hobby as a teenager. “I loved to read historical novels as a kid, but I didn’t discover social dancing until I was in college,” said Hansen. “This is exactly the kind of activity I’d have loved as a teen.” Summerwind Dance Society also hosts monthly social dances for high school students in Newtown Square on the second Saturday of each month during the school year. “I have a group of families that I connect with in the Newtown Square area, and I am trying to do more locally and build a network of people closer to the Downingtown and Exton area,” Hansen said. “I am a public educator as my career and this is just a passion and a hobby for me. (The dance society) is a community organization trying to get more dancing out there and make more opportunities available.” She added that Summerwind Dance Society’s mission statement is: “To bring the joy of dance to the lives of everyone, especially teens and young adults, and in doing so build our sense of community.” For more information about Summerwind Dance Society and to view videos of the dances, readers may visit www.Facebook.com/ SummerwindDance.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman (left) recently visited with Keith Fahnestock of Fahnestock’s Fruit Farm. Keith is a member of one of the four families that have been operating at the West Chester Growers Market since it opened 25 years ago. State Sen. Andy Dinniman, who serves on the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, recently visited the West Chester Growers Market (WCGM) in honor of its 25th anniversary. The market opened in July 1995 and has continued to operate seasonably at the same location - the corner of North Church and West Chestnut streets. In fact, four of the 10 farming families that helped launch the market 25 years ago continue to operate and participate today. These families are the Stoltzfuses, Fahnestocks, Kerschners, and Hausers. Paul Hauser, who is credited as a driving force behind the establishment of the WCGM, said that the market has succeeded due to optimism, hard work, and hope. The WCGM is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May through December and every first, third, and fifth Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon from January through April. When WCGM opened, it was known as the first producer-only market in southeastern Pennsylvania. Since then, it has become a model for numerous markets

that have spawned in many communities throughout the region. Today, Chester County is home to 10 farmers or growers’ markets located in West Chester, Downingtown, Eagleview, East Goshen, Kennett Square, Malvern, New Garden, Oxford, and Phoenixville. For a complete listing of the farmers and growers’ markets and other sources of local farm products, readers may visit www.chesco.org/1124/Find -Local-Farm-Products and click on View Local Farm Products Guide. Dinniman reminds senior citizens that they may be eligible to receive homegrown fruits and vegetables from local farmers markets completely free of charge. The Pennsylvania Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program provides senior citizens with checks that can be used at participating farmers markets and roadside stands throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. Eligible seniors must be at least 60 years old and have an annual income of less than $23,107 for a single individual and $31,284 for married couples. The Pennsylvania Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program operates in all 67 counties and at more than 1,000 markets and farm stands.

Sadsburyville from pg 1 22, beginning at 5 p.m. In the late 1800s, Johnsontown was initially the home of Irish residents, many of whom worked on the railroad. After World War I, Italian immigrants moved into the area, creating St. Anthony’s Lodge, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Parking for the walking tour will be available on the west side of St. Anthony’s Lodge, 259 Church St., Downingtown. Additional free parking will be available at the Downingtown Borough lot (Johnsontown Park) at 122 Viaduct Ave. A shuttle bus will be available to transport guests to St. Anthony’s Lodge. On Thursday, Aug. 29, the tour will be at Brandywine Meadow Farm, home of Charles E. Mathers Brandywine Hounds (circa 1901). Included will be a visit from the Radnor Hunt and an optional 25th Town Tour anniversary dinner. Parking will be available at Radley Run Country Club, 1100 Country Club Road, West Chester. The first tour will begin at 4:30 p.m.; the last tour will begin at 7:15 p.m. The anniversary celebration buffet dinner will be served from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Those who are staying for dinner are asked to register in advance by contacting Kim Jones at 610-793-1660. The community is invited to take a tour of historic Sadsburyville without having to brave the August heat. As part of Chester County’s Town Tours and Village Walks program, a special supper lecture and armchair tour will take place on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Historic Yellow Springs, 1685 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. The program will feature photographs and a presentation by Dick Dague, president of the Sadsbury Township Historical Society. “I already had a slideshow that I presented to the township called ‘Historic Buildings in Sadsbury Township.’ I’ve taken the slideshow I already had and eliminated everything that was not Sadsburyville,” Dague said. “I parked my car at the township building and walked from one end of Sadsburyville to the other and back.” Located on U.S. Business Route 30 about 5 miles west of Coatesville, the settlement that would become Sadsburyville began as early as 1729. The area experienced growth in 1794 when the first macadamized road in the country was laid through the settlement and the Sadsbury Hotel became a welcome stop for turnpike travelers. Early settlers were a mixture of Friends from England and Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Some believe that Sadsburyville may have been named for Sudbury in the county of Suffolk, England. Those who attend the upcoming program will see images and hear stories from the past as well as get a chance to

view the community as it exists today. Both historic and modern sites will be included in the lecture. Weather permitting, a guided tour of Historic Yellow Springs will be offered after the lecture. “I was thinking it made more sense to go to the dinner, see the slideshow and then drive through the town so you would know what to look for. But it wouldn’t hurt to drive through ahead of time,” Dague said. Dague has a personal connection to Sadsbury Township history. His family has lived in the township since 1720, and his great-great-great-greatgrandfather was the first pastor of the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church in Parkesburg. Space in the lecture program is limited to 50 participants, and tickets must be purchased in advance. For more information on the event and to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.chescoplanning.org/His Resources/TownToursAug.cfm. Tickets can also be purchased at www.event brite.com by searching for “CCHPN Supper Lecture & Armchair Tour - Village of Sadsburyville.” This is the 25th summer of Chester County’s Town Tours and Village Walks program. Tours began on June 13 at the historic Church of the Holy Trinity in West Chester. The theme of this year’s series is “Then and Now.” Tours are sponsored by the Chester County commissioners through the Chester County Planning Commission and its partners. Upcoming tours include “Johnsontown in Downingtown (Circa 1875): A Town Within A Town” on Thursday, Aug.

That’s always so fun.” As she read the book, when there were opportunities for the youngsters to react or join in an action, she encouraged them to do so. “They were standing up, they were jumping like kangaroos, they were climbing like panda bears and making monkey noises,” Rand said. “It was perfect.” Story Time With the Princess is held three times each day at Dutch Wonderland, a children’s amusement park in Lancaster, and it is also a valued feature at local libraries. The presentation is so popular that a lottery is held to determine which libraries Princess Brooke will visit during the summer reading season. “I get to meet all of our royal friends out in this area that I don’t always get to see at Dutch Wonderland,” Rand said. “This is our last library visit. We’ve been all over the area reading to kids, and we’ve had such a wonderful time reading to them. “Thanks to all of my friends who came today,” she added. “I appreciate you so much.” Library director Trish Vandenbosch was glad to have the princess come to Christiana. “We haven’t had her (visit) for the last couple of years,” she said. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “A Universe of Stories.” Previous special presentations this year have included a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) class on compasses and maps, a reptile show and more. Attendance has averaged 15 to 20 children per program. Many more patrons are taking part in the Summer Reading Program, which is open to youths through age 19. Children may read at their own pace to complete reading logs. Free prizes are provided by local businesses for children who complete the requirements. “There are (non-reading events) on (the reading log) for reluctant readers. They can do activities, they can get a library card or they can come to programs - that all counts,” Vandenbosch said. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The Summer Reading Program will run through Saturday, Aug. 10. On that day, participants should bring their reading logs into the library to claim their prizes. The library will be open on Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information about the Summer Reading Program or library activities, readers may visit www.christiana library.org or search for “Moores Memorial Library” on Facebook.

Chester County commissioner Terence Farrell (left) recently received a top-10 Digital Counties Survey award from Jeremy Debrine of Zscaler, one of the award sponsors, at the National Association of Counties’ annual conference in Clark County, Nev. For the fourth year in a row, the Center for Digital Government (CDG) and National Association of Counties (NACo) have placed Chester County in the top 10 U.S. counties for best technology practices. The ranking in the Digital Counties Survey is based on initiatives that streamline delivery of government services; encourage open data, collaboration, and shared services; enhance cybersecurity; and contribute to disaster response and recovery efforts. Chester County commissioner Terence Farrell recently received the award at the NACo annual conference in Clark County, Nev. The Digital Counties judging panel commended Chester County on its website’s responsive-design content management system, the digitization of several forms and applications, and the introduction

of an e-filing option. The judges also highlighted efforts to provide translation of key webpages for Spanish-speaking residents. A menu option on the www.chesco.org homepage lists all information available in Spanish, and the county’s decision to use a local translation service instead of standard translation software was made so that the translations reflect the cultural language of the Chester County community. The Digital Counties Survey is conducted annually in the spring. All U.S. counties are invited to participate in the survey, which examines the overall technology programs and plans of the county. and Beautify, PennDOT has developed a Pollinator Habitat Plan that will create naturalized gardens and meadows planted with pollinator-friendly plant species at designated sites in partnership with public and private organizations. The gardens can be planted and maintained at a PennDOT-designated pollinator habitat site within the department’s right-of-way property, including at county facilities, interstate rest stops, or approved interchange areas or traffic islands. Individuals or groups such as clubs, schools, churches, businesses, and families may apply to adopt gardens for two-year timeframes. In return for their participation, PennDOT posts signs near the garden giving the volunteers credit for their efforts. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has marked the 30th anniversary of its Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) program, where volunteers “adopt” a highway to collect litter. The program currently has more than 4,900 participating groups, more than 100,000 volunteers, and more than 10,000 miles of adopted state-maintained roadways. Building upon the Adopt-AHighway program, PennDOT offers volunteers the opportunity to add landscaping to their litter collection efforts by way of the Adopt and Beautify program. Through Adopt and Beautify, volunteers expand upon PennDOT’s planting efforts to cultivate approved plantings and conduct litter pickup along state-maintained roadways under a two-year commitment. In return, PennDOT places a sign recognizing the group for its efforts. Interchange areas and traffic islands are also available for adoption. As an enhancement to Adopt
