Rover, who was once a stray, is currently available for adoption from DogsHome. He is shown with Jen Teti, a volunteer with the rescue organization.
Volunteers with DogsHome believe that a rescued dog waiting to be permanently adopted should be able to stay with a loving foster family until its forever home is found. The Chester County-based organization is currently in need of local individuals and families willing to serve as fosters so that even more dogs in need can be rescued. DogsHome will pay for all food, veterinary care and anything else the dog might need while it is in foster care, including toys, treats, a leash and more. “Fostering with us is totally free. All you have to give is love,” said Carin Ford, DogsHome president. Prospective fosters are invited to complete an application at www.DogsHome PA.org and then take part in a home
visit. “We arrange a time for a home meeting to see what your lifestyle is and what would work. We want to meet you and talk to you and meet the other pets, (adults) or children in the home to give us a sense of which would be the best dog to put in your home,” Ford explained. “We don’t do home visits to be intrusive. We won’t put a dog with anxiety issues in a home with young children who have the right to run and dance and sing, but the dog might feel threatened by that.” She emphasized that fosters do not need to have a large home or yard. “We don’t require a fenced-in yard. You build a better bond walking the dog on a leash and getting to know each other,” Ford stated. At times, foster families will adopt the dog, Ford noted. “When you foster, you have first dibs on adopting the dog. We call it ‘foster failure,’” said Ford.
“The fact is the dog has come to you under some kind of stressful situation. So, if you adopt, how nice that is. We are fine with foster failures.” She added that while giving a dog to its new family may be difficult for fosters, they have to keep in mind the best interests of the dog. “The knowledge that I helped saved this dog (makes) me happy,” Ford said of fostering. “You get the satisfaction of knowing what you are helping to do.” Those who foster a dog through DogsHome will receive support during the entire process. Since the rescue has two certified, professional dog trainers on its volunteer staff, including Ford, DogsHome works with the foster families to help get dogs trained and ready for adoption. “Typically people foster from us and adopt from us because we are a different See DogsHome pg 2

Recipients can pick up their boxes at 30 community sites, including food pantries, senior centers and senior housing facilities. “(To receive the boxes,) you have to be age 60 or above and there is a certain (qualifying) income level,” explained Claudia Rose-Muir, CCFB’s direct distribution program manager, noting boxes can be picked up at any senior center in Chester County. “The box contains about 23 different shelf-stable items. Celtic Martins from pg 1 The talented Celtic Martins will perform at the final free concert of the Sounds of Strasburg summer series at Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, Aug. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The family band is known for bringing energy to the Celtic music and dance scene. The program on Aug. 17 will feature Irish and American fiddle tunes along with numerous Irish step dance routines. “We have wanted to have the Celtic Martins on our outdoor stage for several years,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which hosts the concert series. “This is an extremely multitalented family that will amaze our visitors. It will be a great show to end this year’s concert series. We hope many families will join us for this event. Our outdoor amphitheater is a great venue for this type of performance.” The main parking lot is located at 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and is reserved for handicapped-accessible parking. A golf cart shuttle will be available for disabled guests. Ample parking may be found along Precision Avenue. Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show picnic meal may use the tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. “We encourage our visitors to patronize our food vendors,” Arbogast commented, noting that an assortment of food, cold beverages, and Italian water ice will be available for purchase. Admission is open to the general public and free of charge due to the generosity of local concert sponsors. For more information about the 2019 Sounds of Strasburg concerts, concert updates, and the Strasburg Community Park, readers may visit www.strasburg park.org, find “Strasburg Community Park” on Facebook, or call Barb Rathbone-Frank at 717-572-6830. hear announcements. Each age group then meets for its own separate Bible teaching time, which also includes introduction and explanation of the Scripture contained in the handbooks. Participants then meet in small groups, typically of five to eight club members and two leaders, to study and discuss the night’s Scripture and Bible story. During this time, the children recite their memorized verses for their leaders, and Cubbies also do a craft. After small group time, club members play group games on Awana’s game circle. Some meetings include additional activities related to the night’s theme. Nightly themes this year will include Neon Night; Noodle Night, featuring a service project; Giant Game Night; and Zoo Night. Special events will include the Grand Prix, including wooden car racing, and Sparks A Rama, featuring competition against other area churches for

The first meeting of the 201920 club year will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Awana will be held on most Wednesdays from 6:40 to 8:15 p.m. through Wednesday, May 6, 2020. Each Awana meeting includes several segments. The evening opens when all club members meet in the auditorium to pray, sing, say the club’s pledges, and

all the generations represented each time, but we have had them throughout the years.” Barbara is a co-facilitator of the group along with her parents, Paul and Twila Ranck, who have offered the GriefShare support group in the Parkesburg area since 2002. Each GriefShare session begins with introductions and refreshments, including hot tea and coffee. Attendees then watch a video that features real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. “The group will then discuss the video together,” said Barbara. “They will talk about what they found helpful, the challenges they are navigating and how the video spoke to what they are dealing with.” People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained; participants do not have to attend in sequence. Barbara noted that some people repeat the entire course or just the sessions that deal with a particular topic. Session topics include “Why?” and “Challenges of Grief,” along with “The Journey of Grief,” “Guilt and Anger” and “Heaven.” “They are all very good,” said Barbara when asked which sessions seem to be popular with attendees. “‘Why?’ is one that people often walk away from the most impacted. ‘Guilt and Anger’ is impactful, too.”
Barbara pointed out that at times, friendship groups have formed that continue outside of GriefShare. “Just this past session, there was a group that exchanged phone numbers, and they meet monthly,” she said. “During the 13 weeks you make friends that you keep. Strangers become friends, and you stay in contact.” Since it is common for people to have difficulty taking the step to attend their first session, Barbara recommends that they bring a friend or family member. “Oftentimes we do notice that people come with friends. Occasionally, those friends will continue the 13 weeks. But for most, after a couple of weeks in, they don’t have to attend on regular basis anymore,” she pointed out. “They will continue to be supportive to their grieving friend, but sometimes individuals are empowered and feeling secure enough to come on their own.” In the addition to the weekly GriefShare sessions, “Surviving the Holidays” will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information about the GriefShare session at Gateway Church or to register, readers may call 610-8570720, visit www.griefshare.org/ groups/99777 or email Griefshare@gate wayonechurch.com. While youths with special needs look forward to High 5 Soccer offered in the spring and fall by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association (GEYA), the volunteer buddies who are paired with the players also benefit from the program. “High 5 has changed my life in ways I could not even begin to explain,” stated volunteer buddy Natalie Cherna in an essay titled “What High 5 Means to Me.” “The players who come to High 5 are the bravest, strongest, most amazing children I have ever met. Each one has taught me to be a better person in their own special way,” she continued. High 5 Soccer, which allows youths with disabilities to enjoy the game of soccer at no cost, is in need of additional volunteer buddies for the upcoming season. The fall season of High 5 Soccer will be held on Sundays, Sept. 8 through Nov. 3,
from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Fellowship Field No. 1, 241 Fellowship Road, Chester Springs. As part of the program, players (in red T-shirts), who range in age from 5 to 18, are paired with volunteer buddies (in blue T-shirts), who are predominately local high school and middle school students. Buddies may use the hours for their graduation project or community service hour requirements. College students and adults may also be buddies, but those age 18 and up must submit a background check. Buddies are asked to participate in one training session before each season. This year’s training will take place on Thursday Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Field pavilion During the High 5 sessions, players and buddies do not actually play a full game of soccer. Rather, they take part in a series of soccer-related games, such as maneuvering a soccer ball through a series of cones and playing “Red Light,
As part of the High 5 program, volunteer buddies are paired with athletes with special needs to allow them to enjoy the game of soccer. Additional buddies are needed for the fall session of High 5 Soccer, presented by the Glenmoore Eagle Youth Association. Green Light,” during which they stop and go while kicking a soccer ball across the playing field. High 5 also includes “Buddy Bowling,” where the buddies act as human bowling pins that the players knock down with a giant soccer ball. Each session culminates in a High 5 tunnel in which the buddies form a tunnel and high-five the players as they run through. Each player also receives juice and a snack. High 5 Soccer is led by coach Matt Wagner and his wife, Jenn Wagner, with help from other volunteer coaches. High 5 Soccer began in September 2012 and is based on U.S. Youth Soccer’s TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) model, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities. “We are the first TOPSoccer league in Chester County and one of the largest in southeastern Pennsylvania,” Jenn said, noting that High 5 Soccer was the idea of the GEYA Soccer board, whose members took part in TOPSoccer training. “Bill La Torre was the director for a few seasons, then asked Matt to take over. Our nephew George has autism and was the reason we got involved. “
Buddies are eligible to win a scholarship at the end of the soccer season based on an essay they write. The winner for the spring 2019 session of High 5 was Shea Jardine. “Not only do the players look forward to soccer, but so do us buddies. I am so excited for High 5 every single week in the spring and fall,” she wrote in her essay. “I have worked with so many amazing players through my four years in High 5 and they have all taught me many valuable lessons. I have improved my patience, learned to be more appreciative and grateful for what I am lucky enough to have in life, and I have learned how important positivity and encouragement are.” For more information about the High 5 program or becoming a buddy, readers may contact Jenn at HIGH5@geya soccer.org. More information about GEYA Soccer is available at www.geya sports.org and by searching for “GEYA Soccer & High 5 Soccer” on Facebook.
Matt Wagner (back, standing) coaches the High 5 Soccer program, which allows youths with disabilities to enjoy the game of soccer with the help of volunteer buddies.

Pecan Praline Cookie Triangles Pecans are a species of hickory native to northern Mexico and the southern United States. Pecan trees are cultivated for their edible nuts, and it can take 12 years for a tree to reach maturity and begin producing. There are many different ways to incorporate pecans into recipes, such as in cookie bars. A motorcycle ride took place on July 20 to collect donations of school supplies for the children served by North Star of Chester County, a local homelessness prevention nonprofit. Riders and supporters gathered at West Chester Cycle on Downingtown Pike in West Chester to join in the hourlong trek. Mike Podgurski, the coowner of West Chester Cycle, organized the event after learning about North Star’s program and the families they serve. Bikers brought new backpacks full of school supplies, the entry fee for the ride. North Star of Chester County serves single working parents, preventing homelessness

PHEAA recently announced that its investment of nearly $33 million into the PA Targeted Industry Program (PA-TIP) has helped approximately 8,500 Pennsylvania students achieve an education in the high-demand fields of energy, advanced materials, diversified manufacturing, agriculture, and food production. PA-TIP was created by the state in 2012 to help develop an educated and welltrained workforce, and 2018-19 marks the sixth consecutive year that PHEAA has fully funded the program for the commonwealth without any taxpayer support. For 2018-19, PHEAA’s board of directors allocated $6 million dollars from the agency’s business earnings to fund PA-TIP awards to approximately 1,600 Pennsylvania
students. For the current award year, participants are receiving a maximum award of $4,123 and an average award of award of $1,979. PA-TIP recipients attend a variety of eligible schools throughout Pennsylvania, including business, trade, and technical schools; career and technology centers; community colleges; and two-year private schools. These students would otherwise not be eligible for a need-based Pennsylvania State Grant award because their programs of study do not qualify. PA-TIP provides those students interested in short-term certificate programs with an accessible funding option that can help them cover their educational costs without adding to their student loan debt burden. The program provides awards up to the equivalent of the maximum State Grant award or 75% of the student’s allowable cost,
whichever is less. However, eligible Pennsylvania veterans may receive awards up to the maximum State Grant award, provided that the PA-TIP does not exceed the student’s allowable costs. Eligible courses of study must be more than 10 weeks in length, be less than two academic years in length, and be federal Title IV eligible. Additionally, courses of study must not be State Grant eligible. A list of eligible programs and participation requirements can be found at www.PHEAA.org/PA-TIP. For information on the higher education financial aid process, schedules for upcoming Financial Aid Nights and FAFSA Completion Sessions, reminders of financial aid deadlines, and video clips offering tips and information pertaining to planning for higher education, students may visit www.facebook.com/pheaa.aid.

The spotted lanternfly (SLF), an invasive plant-hopper, was discovered in Berks County in 2014. This insect has the potential to greatly impact the stone fruit, grape, hops and logging industries. Damage to blueberries, basil, cucumbers and horseradish has also been observed. In 2018, an SLF order of quarantine and treatment was established by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA). All residents and businesses must comply with the regulations. An SLF permit is required for businesses working within the quarantine that move products, vehicles or other conveyances within or out of the quarantine.

Social Media Safety Tips Posted
Lions Club Installs New Officers
Social media is a significant part of daily life for people around the globe. Using social media has become so routine that people can easily overlook security, making them vulnerable to criminals who aim to use social media to access personal information about their victims. Social media use can not only make people vulnerable to crimes such as identity theft, but it also can make people more likely to be victims of violent crimes. For example, according to GuardChild, a group founded by parents with a goal of protecting children in the digital age, 33 percent of all internet-initiated sex crimes involve social networking sites. The following are some security measures social media users can take to protect themselves on platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. People should avoid being overly personal and always think before sharing personal information via social media. Even sharing something as innocuous as the name of the street where one grew up can provide an avenue for cyber criminals to access personal information. Many people use information like their childhood address or pets’ names when creating passwords for bank accounts or other password-protected sites. Sharing such insider information on social media gives criminals a

backdoor through which they might be able to access sensitive information. The 2018 Global Digital suite of reports from We Are Social and Hootsuite indicated that 90 percent of the three billion global social media users access platforms via mobile devices. If devices, including smartphones and tablets, are not locked, criminals can access them via Wi-Fi wherever people go. Devices should always be locked, and sensitive information should be encrypted if it is being stored on mobile devices. People should be on the lookout for the obvious. Email-based scams are still widely in use, even though many users may think that such scams are a thing of the past. The digital security experts at Norton note that email phishing scams are still used because they still work, having recently been used to hack into private businesses and even government organizations. These scams, when effective, can be used to provide criminals with access to email and social media accounts. It is important that social media users stay alert to all potential security threats, even those they might think are too simple to work. Social media users must prioritize security when accessing their accounts to ensure they can safely connect with friends and colleagues.

The 2019 Chester County Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is the longest-running historic home tour in the country and offers an opportunity to enjoy history, architecture, and interior design. A project of the 126-year-old Women’s Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital, the annual event has raised more than $5 million for the hospital, including $135,000 in 2018. Proceeds from the 2019 tour will benefit the Women’s Auxiliary’s “Heart to Heart” pledge, which will provide funding for the expansion of the arrhythmia treatment program at Chester County Hospital. The event includes a tour of homes and public structures/historic sites in the southeast quadrant, including Westtown, Glen Mills, Willistown, Malvern, and Berwyn. Chester County Day will begin with a fox hunt at Radnor Hunt in Malvern, complete with hounds, horses, and horns, and will set off at 9 a.m. Guests can begin their tour of this year’s selected properties at 10 a.m.
