Fundraisers to benefit Christiana library

Providingfree passes to area museums, helping maintain free use of computers and internet access for patrons, and supporting an aerobic drumming class, a knitting group and story times are just some of the programs that will benefit from upcoming fundraisers being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library and the library board. Events will include a golf tournament as well as a yard sale and chicken barbecue.

The 14th annual library golf tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 28, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. A light lunch will be

provided at noon, and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, provided by Wayne Buckwalter Jr., will be served at the conclusion of the tournament. The single-player fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner and on-course beverages.

Preregistration is encouraged; registration forms are available at the library. Golfers may also register by calling 717-951-8713.

Walk-in registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, space permitting. Golfers may sign up with friends as a group of four or enter as an individual and be placed with a team.

There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closest-to-the-pin,

longest drive for men and for ladies and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams, and there will be a cash prize for a hole in one, compliments of Hershey Motors. There will also be door prizes, including gift cards from local businesses.

This tournament is designed for amateur golfers, and no prizes will be awarded to professionals.

“Last year, we had more than 50 golfers,” noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president. In addition to the programs already mentioned, a portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be used to replace the library’s sign. “This will be a big (ticket) item,” said Esworthy. “The (current) sign was not meant to be outside in the elements.”

40 years of Awana

2023 program prepares to kick off

The Awana program at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) is not new. In fact, the Wednesday evening children’s activity will be entering its 40th year when it starts this fall. But organizers like Heather Ensslen help keep the program fresh for the more than 60 area children who attend on average.“Last year we did Critter Cards, and the children learned about animals and collected cards,” recalled Ensslen. “We had a lot of fun with that, so we wanted

another yearlong theme.”

This year’s theme, “Around the World,” will be first explored when Awana holds a kickoff and registration event at the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. The experience will include an International Food Faire with up to 10 tables representing different countries, where volunteers will hand out information and food samples.Among the areas that will be represented are Mexico, Thailand, the Middle East, and Ghana, Africa. Students from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will perform as well.

Ensslen explained that the international theme is based on a study that showed more than 5 million children engage weekly in Awana’s Bible-focused, child discipleship ministries in a variety of countries. Awana will be held at the church each Wednesday from Sept. 6 to May 8, beginning at 6:40 p.m. each week. “We will (visit) a different country each month,” explained Ensslen, who noted that children will watch a video, talk about a country, and then collect a card, like a passport, for that country. “If they earn so many by the end of the club year, they will receive an award,” said Ensslen.

Awana clubs are divided into four age groups. The group for 2-year-olds is called Puggles. Children ages 3 to 5 attend Cubbies. Children in kindergarten to second grade go to Sparks, and thirdthrough sixth-graders go to Truth and Training, called T&T. Awana opens with a whole group gathering for song, and then the clubs break into smaller groups to go over workbooks and memory verses. Each club has large group time and a game time that Ensslen called “unique to that group.” The Cubbies also

have puppet and craft time. Along with the international theme, Ensslen said some special theme nights are planned based on activities that have proven popular in the past. One of those is a neon night, which involves neon clothing and glow items, and another involves children creating cards for church attendees who are hospitalized or homebound. “The kids

loved making the cards, and people loved receiving the cards as well. Ensslen noted that the annual Grand Prix pinewood derby will be scheduled for a Saturday in February, as well.

It takes more than 40 adult volunteers to help set up, tear down, and shepherd the children who attend Awana. Ensslen noted that some volunteers have been serving the

program for more than 30 years.

This is the fourth year for the event, which takes place on the property of Merv King from King Construction in New Holland. “(King) is a supporter, and he is letting us use his property for the fourth year,” said Chris Straka, CEO of For One Life.

Straka estimates that more than 2,000 people attended last year’s event. “Our tent seats about 900, and it was full both nights, and there were lawn chairs all around,” he stated.

This year’s performers are Amos Raber, Country Road Ramblers, David Miller, John Schmid, Dan and Amanda Esh, The Churchmen and The Deanes. “We wanted to make sure everyone has a really good experience, so we hired (pro-

fessional audio and visual technicians),” noted Straka. “It is a professional-quality sound system, with a 17-foot LED wall to augment the activities.”

For children, there will be bounce houses and games, a dunk tank and arts and crafts. Adults will be able to try their hand at ax throwing. “We are dedicating a large amount of space for the children’s area,” said Straka. “We are doing activities with kids on Friday night and all day Saturday, so families feel comfortable coming and spending an evening with their kids.”

There will be a variety of food trucks on hand, including Skip’s Food Truck, Welder’s Steak Shack, Swirls of Delight, Character Coffee,

Auntie Anne’s, Anytime Acai and Country Smokehouse Barbecue and Catering.

Straka noted that volunteers are utilized to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

“We started planning right after last year’s event,” he said.

“We have a core committee of 10 people, and we have 30 to 40 volunteers parking cars and (performing other duties).”

Proceeds from Music on the Mountain will support For One Life’s projects in Northeast India, which include youth and child development, education and life care.

“Michael Esh, the founder of For One Life, came to know about this area through Bibles For The World 20 years ago,” Straka explained. “He did

an outdoor eating area and a downstairs meeting room.

The property, situated on approximately 10 acres, also offers an outdoor picnic grove and pavilion that the public may rent and a ball field.

The VFW offers membership to veterans, as well as social memberships. VFW members are veterans who have honorably served overseas in an area of foreign conflict. Those who are not eligible for VFW membership but are the parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, child or grandchild of a qualifying veteran can apply for membership in the VFW Auxiliary.

“The post has approximately 123 regular members, which are people who served in conflict,” explained Lucinda Fisher, the steward of Post 7418, noting that members include Vietnam and Korean War veterans.

The post’s primary goal is to help veterans in need. Most recently, veterans were invited to the post to learn about their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits during a program held in July. “When a veteran needs help, they come to us. We can either give them help ourselves or we can steer them to where they can get the help,” said quartermaster Bob Charlesen.

The post supports local fire companies and other veterans’ organizations, and it participates in Wreaths Across

America. In June, the post held a fundraiser to benefit Woerth it Hollow, which provides equine-assisted therapy to veterans and people with disabilities.

Seasonal activities are also offered. “This is a familyfriendly (post),” said Charlesen. “You can bring your children. We have Christmas parties for the kids, Halloween parties and Easter egg hunts, and you don’t have to be a member to come to those.”

“You don’t have to be a member for any of our food

specials. You do have to be a member to purchase alcohol,” Fisher added.

Currently, the Gap VFW is looking to add new members. “COVID hurt us. We shut down and it’s been a struggle to bounce back,” said Fisher, noting that the post was able to make several building improvements during the shutdown, including the addition of new flooring.

Those interested in joining the post are asked to complete a membership application. “If they don’t have a sponsor, we will find one for

them,” Fisher said. “We definitely need younger veterans (to join).”

Charlesen recently set up an informational table at Strasburg Community Days to encourage membership. “Most people that came over were shocked to hear that they could join a VFW club,” he stated.

The Gap VFW Post is located at 4988 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers. For more information, including details about upcoming events and food specials, visit www.face book.com/vfwgap.

Chester County rises to fourth place in national digital ranking

The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) have awarded Chester County government fourth place for best digital technology practices in the nation in the 500,000 to 999,999 population category. The county has consistently ranked as a top 10 contender in the CDG and NACo Digital Counties Survey for its dedication to guaranteeing that its citizens and workforce have access to a wide variety of digital tools to expand opportunities and

meet their evolving needs.

The winning counties in this year’s Digital Counties Survey were chosen based on improving the quality of life for citizens and staff members, including how they adopted new technology to achieve local priorities and their ability to be resilient in times of unexpected crisis.

Specifically, the survey’s judging panel highlighted Chester County’s digitization of judicial processes through e-filing and cloud-based case management systems for multiple offices. The judges

commended a data-sharing initiative among human services agencies and law enforcement, which aims to reduce the incarceration of people with substance abuse disorders and mental illnesses.

The judges also lauded Chester County’s plans for future digital initiatives, such as automating processes and integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI). These plans would utilize different resources to streamline cremation requests and generate press releases and social media content. A

renewed focus on combating cybersecurity attacks and the elimination of a paper dependency for forms were also noted in the judges’ comments.

The digital survey is con-

ducted annually in the spring. All U.S. counties are invited to participate in the survey, which examines the overall technology programs and plans of counties, including initiatives that streamline the

delivery of government services, enhance cybersecurity and apply innovative technologies to county priorities. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/digital techrankings.

RECLAIMED LUMBER – STONE ANTIQUES – PRIMITIVES - RUSTICS

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23 @ 8:30 A.M.

Location: 109 Route 41, Gap, PA 17527 (Lancaster Co.) - Along Rt. 41 South of Gap -

Lumber – Beams - Boards: Approx. 40,000 BF of beams, joists, and rafters in oak, pine, chestnut, hemlock, etc.; Approx. 30,000 BF of boards & 2” planks in oak, pine, chestnut, hemlock, etc.

County Postcard Club will conduct its annual expo and show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Admission to the event is free.

“People collect multiple things for all different reasons,” said Gordon Smith, a member of the Lancaster County Postcard Club who’s organizing the expo. “It depends on what draws their interest. Some people collect postcards for the post marks from different post offices. Some people collect them for the stamps. The show is an opportunity for people to get together and talk about postcards and explore postcards.”

Postcards will be displayed on 45 tables - about 10 more than in 2022 - by 20 vendors or dealers, some from as far away as Maryland, New York, Delaware, Ohio, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington, D.C. More than 100,000 postcards depicting scenes, vacation spots and roadside places like diners, hotels and motels, as well as some celebrating holidays and special occasions, will be made available for purchase.

“I’ve never seen so many postcards in one place,” said Smith, a 53-year-old resident of Wrightsville. “Some people

have their favorite dealers. Everyone comes looking for different stuff. Most of them are there to buy, but there are also people from the community coming to sell their families’ collections. But there are also people who are curious; they’re just taking it all in.”

Nearly 250 postcard collectors and aficionados are expected to attend the Lancaster County Postcard Expo. The expo is one of a handful of postcard shows conducted in Lancaster County at different times each year.

“(A postcard is) a card that the postal service will mail without an envelope,” said Smith. “It used to be a way of communicating at the turn of the (20th) century. At that time, the mail went out three or four times a day. They didn’t have telephones. It was a short message and a way to keep in touch. It was just random conversation that you and I now have in person or over the phone.”

Smith said he possesses postcards that were postmarked as far back as the 1870s.

“Some people make their own postcards,” said Smith. “I personally like the real photo postcards. It’s a picture of

what happened there and then. It gives you a glimpse of what life was like at that specific moment.”

The Lancaster County Postcard Club recently celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its founding. A few years after its founding, the club sponsored its inaugural Lancaster County Postcard Expo.

“Postcards are still being made,” said Smith. “You can find them at tourist areas. But they’re not being used as much as they used to be, probably because people now use phones or the internet.”

Virtual workshop will teach tree pruning

Penn State Extension will offer a virtual workshop on how to correctly prune trees. “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts” will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from noon to 1 p.m. Branch failure can be caused by wind, ice, snow or a climber aloft. Such breakage can result in costly property damage, personal injury, power outages or blocked roads.

During the upcoming workshop, attendees will learn how tree branches deal with loading throughout the tree structure. There will also be a discussion on the biology around why small cuts are better than larger cuts and the impacts of decay on wound closure after pruning.

The program is designed to benefit municipal managers, foresters and arborists, as well as others interested in urban and community forestry.

The webinar is free, but a fee may be associated with the following credits: Society of American Foresters (CFE), pending approval; International Society of Arboriculture; Certificate of Attendance for Professionals and Others to Self-Report; and Peer Volunteer/Master Gardener Update Training.

The program is being presented by the Penn State Extension in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, State and Private Forestry; Pennsylvania DCNR, Bureau of Forestry; and Pennsylvania TreeVitalize Program, Pennsylvania Community Trees. To register, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ education-format/webinars and search for “Why We Should Be Making Small Pruning Cuts.”
