Freshproduce, flowers and plants, jewelry, furniture pieces, wreaths, artwork, freeze dried candy and handmade goat milk soap and lotion were just some of the items offered for sale at the new Parkesburg Farmers Market held outdoors at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. Shoppers were also able to enjoy refreshments, including coffee, cupcakes and kettle corn.

The market, dubbed “Second on First,” opened on July 8 and will be offered on the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 14 by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), along with Flowers in Bloom and the Little Shop Next Store. The next farmers market will be open on Aug. 12.

Local crafters and small businesses are invited to set up a booth at the farmers market. Vendors pay a fee for the space. “It is (open) to artisans only, no direct sales,” said PAC member Tina O’Conner, noting that organizers were pleased with the variety of vendors on opening day. “We did great for our first one. We are very happy. “

Various shoppers, some of whom walked to the market, said they were pleased with the selection of goods.

“It was so amazing on a Saturday morning, getting fresh produce and fresh kettle corn,” said Josh Mellinger, a member of Parkesburg Borough Council.

Other shoppers included Dana Young, who stated, “(I) loved the assortment of vendors, and the coffee was great.”

In addition to the famers market, PAC offers Final Friday, a monthly street fair held on the last Friday of the month from 5 to 9 p.m. in the 200 block of Main Street. The next event will be on Aug. 25, when the theme will be “Dog Days of Summer.”

Fire Experience”

Youngsters ages 5 to 14 who are interested in learning about fire safety and firefighting are invited to attend the 2023 Kids’ Fire Experience, a camp being offered this summer at the Christiana Fire Company.

The annual event will begin with a Family Night on Friday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m., followed by the camp on Saturday, Aug. 26, which has been tentatively set to begin at 8 a.m. The registration deadline is Monday, July 24.

On Family Night, children will receive a T-shirt to wear to camp

Lions Club to dedicate community benches

The Parkesburg Lions Club will hold two community bench dedications on Sunday, July 30. One bench to memorialize Joann Carmen will be dedicated at 3 p.m. at Parkesburg VWF Post 4480, 406 W. Fourth Ave., Parkesburg. The second bench will be dedicated at 4 p.m. at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, to memorialize Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde.

Parkesburg Mayor John Hagen will be on hand at both events.

Community members who would like

to speak about the two honorees are encouraged to attend the ceremonies.

Carmen, who passed away in 2021, was the office manager of the Parkesburg VFW and a supporter of the Keystone Valley Fire Department. “She was in charge of the Parkesburg VFW for many years, and she was amazing,” said Parkesburg Lions Club president Robin McKenna. “We have fundraisers at the VFW, and she was very supportive of the Lions Club.”

Carmen’s bench will be placed at the flagpole in front of the VFW, which also dedicated its sunroom in her memory.

the following day. There will also be carnival games. “We will have an inflatable obstacle course, free food and some apparatus on display,” said Kim Moore, vice president of the

Christiana Fire Company and one of the organizers of the fire camp. “It’s turned more into a community event.”

During fire camp on Aug. 26, youngsters will rotate through a series of stations. Topics will include CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. They will also be able to watch a car cutting, which is what emergency workers do to rescue a trapped victim, and practice using fire extinguishers.

“(The children) will do a lot of hands-on staff with EMS, fire and police. I have (representatives) there from all of those areas,” Moore explained. “(The children will go through) smoke mazes, which illustrates what firefighters do when they go into a house when it’s on fire.”

She said the goal of the fire camp is for children not to be afraid of EMS workers in the event of a real emergency and to hopefully recruit campers as future volunteers.

Moore noted that the camp has been held at the

Wilde, director of the Wilde Funeral Home, passed away in December 2021. He became a member of the Parkesburg Lions Club in 1977 and later served as club president. In February 2019, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest recognition given by the Lions Clubs International Foundation for community service.

The Parkesburg Lions Club has been collecting plastics to earn free benches as part of a recycling program offered by the Trex Company. The Lions Club placed its first bench in the community at the bus stop near the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St. It was dedicated to the late Jim Norton, a longtime Lions Club member and a past member of the Parkesburg Library Board.

The Lions Club also provided a “Buddy Bench” at Octorara Elementary School. McKenna explained that a Buddy Bench is available for students who are looking for friends. They can sit on the bench as a signal that they need someone to play with. The aim is that other children will invite the child on the bench to play with them.

The community is welcome to donate plastics for the bench program. Items such as grocery bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves and dry cleaning bags are accepted, among other items. Currently, there are receptacles at the Parkesburg Free Library; Fulton Bank, 100 W.

fire company since 2005. “We usually get about 125 to 145 kids,” she reported.

The camp’s success can be measured by how participants used what they learned in reallife situations. “One child whose house was on fire - there was chimney fire - knew enough to get his grandmother out so she was safe, and he learned that at kids’ camp,” Moore recalled. “A child was sitting at dinner, and his brother was choking, and he did the Heimlich, which he learned at kids’ camp. Even if there is one success story a year, it’s well worth it.”

All of the learning sessions are led by local emergency workers. “I have companies coming from southern Chester

Mowday’s three books on Gettysburg are “Pickett’s Charge: The Untold Story,” “J. Howard Wert’s Gettysburg” and “Emotional Gettysburg.” “J. Howard Wert’s Gettysburg” is about the largest private collection of Gettysburg artifacts and features items from Chester County residents; these items include the podium used by President Lincoln during his Gettysburg Address. “Emotional Gettysburg” showcases the paintings of Chadds Ford artist Karl J. Kuerner and includes essays by Mowday.

Mowday will also take part in Civil War Days on Saturday, July 22, at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. The event will begin at 10 a.m. Mowday will sign copies of his books and talk with visitors.

Additionally, Mowday and Kuerner have announced that they will release a new book, “Emotional Brandywine,” in September.

For more information, visit www.mowday.com or email mowday@mowday.com.
