Members of the Brandywine Valley Ski Association (BVSA), a nonprofit organization that meets year-round to enjoy a variety of outdoor sports activities and trips, will hold an open house for new and prospective members on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Brickside Grille i n E a g l e v i e w, l o c a t e d a t 540 Wellington Square, Exton. The ability to ski is not a requirement to join the group. During the open house, visitors can learn about the activities that club members participate in, such as skiing, cycling, hiking, golfing, pool parties and kayaking. “There will be a relatively short presentation by the president of the club, who will talk about who we are and provide a brief history of the club and (its) affiliation with the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council,” noted Tim Noonan, a member of the activities committee. “An activities person will talk about the benefits of being a member of the club and talk about all the activities that are planned for the remainder of the fall and then the ski season. Then, there will be a (social) time.” The event will also include drawings for free memberships for new members only and a display of photos of past events and trips. Upcoming outings planned by the club include full moon kayaking at Marsh Creek State Park on Saturday, Sept. 14, kayaking on the Conestoga River near Perelman Park in Lancaster on

dinner together. “During the holidays, we do a gift exchange. Late in the season, we’ll do a photo contest of past trips.” Guest speakers are also featured. “(In the past) someone from Exton Bicycles talked about bike maintenance, and we had a fashion show by Wick’s Ski Shop (now Buckman’s),” he said. Although the name of the club suggests it is primarily for skiers, members are invited to propose other outings and trip destinations. “ W hatever interests people, that’s what we offer,” Noonan added.

Saturday, Sept. 21 and a horseback ride on Sunday, Oct. 20 at a location to be determined. The group will also take part in a holiday dance party in December. “In 2020, we have ski trips planned to the Poconos, Lake Tahoe in California, Telluride in Colorado and Vermont,” Noonan said. BVSA members are asked to pay an annual fee, with separate prices for couples, families and individuals. In addition to a monthly newsletter that lists club activities, members receive a reciprocal membership to the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council and the National Ski Council. “BVSA is just one chapter of the broader Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council, which includes 39 clubs throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland,” Noonan noted. The club, which was established in 1975, is open to adults of all ages. Currently, the club has 300 registered members. “There is a core group of 100 members primarily from throughout Chester County, but we do draw from throughout the region, (including) Montgomery County and some people in Delaware County and Lancaster County,” Noonan said. BVSA meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month from September through May at the Brickside Grille. Guests are always welcome. “There is a business meeting where the treasurer gives a report and the activities people talk about what is coming up. We sign people up for events and welcome new people, and then there is an informational or fun (event),” explained Noonan, noting that some people arrive to the meetings early to eat

The event, which will feature dinner, silent and live auctions, prize giveaways and more, is open to people of all ages, including hunters and non-hunters alike. Doors will open at 4 p.m. for a social hour, and there will be hors d’oeuvres and games. The silent auction will also be open, offering items such as nature-related artwork, fishing trips, hunting trips, coolers and handmade fishing rods. There will be a table of prizes geared toward women. “There will be a lot of Amish-made crafts and jewelry,” said Art Lyle, one of the event organizers, noting that there will also be a special prize drawing for veterans in attendance. “Veterans stand up and we recognize them and thank them for their service.” A catered buffet dinner will start at 6 p.m. Winners of the silent auction items will be announced after dinner. A live auction will conclude the event. Live auction items will include artwork, home décor and collectibles. In addition, Backyard Bucks will give out a hunting trip to Ohio to a deserving family that was chosen by the chapter members. The name of the family will be announced during the dinner. Those who make a set monetary donation or bring three nonperishable food items to the event will receive a free ticket to be entered into a drawing to win a muzzleloader. The monetary and food donations will be given to local food cupboards. Backyard Bucks is the Chester County chapter of Whitetails Unlimited (WTU), which has close to 500 chapters in the U.S. Proceeds from the Sept. 7 event will be used by the local chapter for projects such as youth programs and conservation and preservation efforts. Every summer, the chapter sponsors a free archery program at the Chester County Conservation Camp held at Paradise Farms in Downingtown, supplying the bows, arrows and targets. “The event this year was in July, and we had more than 40 kids attend,” Lyle said. “We teach

including common milestones for visual development, how to help a baby’s vision to develop, warning signs of possible vision problems, and more. The earlier a vision disorder can be identified and treated, the stronger start to learning and development a child will have. A child may be at higher risk of developing a vision problem if he or she was born prematurely (less than 32 weeks completed gestation); has a family history of vision disorders, such as childhood cataract, amblyopia, misaligned eyes, eye tumors, or wore glasses before first grade; has had an eye injury; or has been diagnosed with a problem that could affect his or her physical, mental and/or, emotional development. By diagnosing and treating vision problems early, vision loss later in life can be prevented. Across the country, many children are beginning a new school year, and healthy vision will be critical to a successful academic year. As a child grows, an untreated eye disease or condition becomes more difficult to correct. These can worsen and lead to other serious problems as well as affect reading ability, focus, behavior, personality, and social adjustment in school. Vision problems that can affect children include amblyopia (“lazy eye”) strabismus (“crossed eyes”), and the most common forms of refractive error: myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). Volunteers Sought For Cleanup Effort A significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. When it rains, trash on sidewalks and streets accumulates and is swept into storm drains. Most storm drain systems discharge directly into the nearest creek or river, eventually flowing to the ocean and taking trash with it. Cleaning up that litter before it has a chance to be washed into the creek will significantly reduce the amount of trash that reaches local waterways and,

Covenanter Festival from pg 1 anthem and “Scotland the Brave.” Zahm, the pipe band, fiddler Tad Marks, harpist Kendrah Tozzo, Fire in the Glen, and the Rehoboth Welsh Choir will perform throughout the day. Foundation president Barry Girvin noted that he is especially looking forward to Zahm’s presentation about the Jacobite risings, during which Zahm will tell stories and sing songs. The festival is a celebration of the Scottish birthright of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. “We have a lot of good heritage events (during the festival),” said foundation treasurer Donna McCool. “We’ve got the haggis ceremony, fiddling demonstrations, and sheep herding. We have things for children, too, which is new.” Additionally, Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well. Fiber artists are slated to demonstrate spinning and weaving, and Irish dances will be demonstrated as well. The festival will be held rain or shine. McCool noted that weather has impacted attendance in previous years, but the event

The upcoming show will feature cars, motorcycles and trucks ranging from antiques to modern-day vehicles. “We are expecting 250 custom cars, hot rods, trucks and bikes,” said O’Fria. Also featured will be music, games and a chance to win door prizes. Food will be offered for sale. The car show will also have new attractions this year, including a display of microcars. “We will also have two live demonstrations this year - how to detail your car by Jeff Reinert from JSR’s Automotive Art and metal shaping by premier metal shaper Mike Phillips from Phillips Automotive and Performance in Downingtown. He will be showing people how you can actually bend and shape metal to make a part to fit for your car. Very few people in the country do it; it’s a lost art.” Trophies will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place vehicles as determined by judges, and a People’s Choice Award will also be bestowed. Make-A-Wish helped fulfill 18-year-old Maya’s wish to attend the Kentucky Derby. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley recently kicked off Trips That Transform, which celebrates the 12,000 wishes that involve travel each year. The public is invited to donate airline miles and points to help children and their families have their wishes fulfilled. On Aug. 1, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley kicked off Trips That Transform, a monthlong celebration of the approximately 12,000 wishes for children battling critical illnesses in the U.S. and its territories each year that involve travel and the donors that make them possible. Among these wishes was 18-year-old Maya’s wish to go to the Kentucky Derby. The family spent the week attending the big race, touring Churchill Downs and spending quality time with each other. With 75 percent of wishes requiring air travel, Make-A-Wish needs more than 3 billion airline miles and points to fulfill travel wishes for children battling critical illnesses each year. Members of the public are invited to contribute their unused airline miles, expiring travel

points and money. Once donated to Make-A-Wish, airline miles and points never expire, and each goes on to help Wish Kids and their families take flight to destinations around the world. Travelers can donate airline miles and points from American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue at www.wish.org/travel. Throughout August, Make-A-Wish will also celebrate the national travel sponsors that help make impactful wishes possible. To learn more about how a wish come true can impact the lives of everyone involved and enable future wishes, readers may follow Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley and #TripsThatTransform on Instagram. The Glen Moore cemetery is a lesson in history with gravestones noting participation of the deceased in the Union Army during the Civil War and in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Family plots date back to the 1870s. A memorial garden for interment of cremains was dedicated in June. The Veterans Memorial Garden on the front lawn of the church also preserves the memory of members who served their country. Glen Moore United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated Heritage Sunday on July 28. The event was a look back over the 146 years since the cornerstone of the building was laid. The church is part of the historic district of the Village of Glenmoore, once known as Moorestown. On Heritage Sunday, a number of historic items were displayed in the community room, including lectionary Bibles from the past century, hymnals from as early as 1900, membership rolls, and a photo book of items donated over the years by various members. At a meeting of the board of trustees of the Springton Methodist Episcopal Church held on May 10, 1871, the president pro tempore, J.S. Parker, stated that the business at hand was to purchase a site for a new church building. A plot of three and onehalf acres belonging to Lucien Hoguett was purchased. The building’s cornerstone was laid on July 25, 1873, and the building was dedicated on Dec. 28, 1873. Current members include families whose ancestors were members of the original congregation. The history of Methodism in the United States dates back to the mid-18th century with the ministries of early Methodist preachers, among them Robert Strawbridge. Following the American Revolution, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, sent Thomas Coke to the U.S., where he and Francis Asbury founded the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the early 20th century, many of the splintered Methodist groups joined

CERT Course 4 p.m. Attendees must attend all of the class sessions in order to receive a certificate of completion. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Youths between 16 and 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The CERT program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. “We’re not training you to jump on a fire truck or follow an ambulance. CERT is all about when first responders are overwhelmed,” explained Joe Sciandra, lead instructor. “For example, in flooding, (sometimes first responders cannot) get to the area to help people that are affected. Because the nature of CERT and because it is neighborhood-based, people are literally right there.” Since the local area has recently experienced tornadoes and flooding, Sciandra said the class is highly relevant. “The fact is that we are having more violent weather. Those are the kind of things that overwhelm the first responders,” he pointed out. While participants in the program take part in activities such as search and rescue and extinguishing small fires, there are no physical requirements needed to take the CERT course. “Anybody that wants to help out and be aware and help in disaster response is (invited) to attend,” said Sciandra. “There is a place in CERT for anybody. In the aftermath of disaster, there are a lot of jobs and things that have to get done. You don’t have to be a rescuer to be part of the program.” The CERT course includes a section on disaster psychology, which teaches people how to look out for one another, and a section on terrorism, which details the warning signs that indicate that a person may want to harm others. In the Light Search and Rescue unit, the class is taught how to determine if it is safe to go into a structure, then properly search for and rescue survivors. “CERT members are taught how to safely transport survivors from one place to another using simple and effective methods that require common resources such as a chair or blanket. We also teach them how to safely extricate a survivor from being trapped in debris,” Sciandra explained. “The CERT members are clearly taught appropriate boundaries for these rescues. They do not start digging in a pile of rubble for survivors. That is the job of highly trained rescue teams. We try to teach CERT members the importance of their own safety first; they are not trained to take risks that would compromise their own safety.” On the final day of the program, there will be a full-scale simulation where CERT members will put to action all the skills they have learned. Registration for the CERT course is required by visiting https://destraining.chesco.org/ p-6998-cg31.aspx. The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 9. The course is limited to 30 participants. If the course is full, residents will be placed on a waiting list for the spring session.

Arthur Hall Insurance recently presented a $3,000 check to the Arc of Chester County as part of the 2019 Chubb Charity Challenge. The Chubb Charity Challenge is an annual golf tournament, now in its 20th year, aimed at raising funds for local charities across North America. Agents, brokers, and clients form teams and play in local tournaments organized by Chubb’s nearby branch offices. Each team plays on behalf of a local charity of the team’s choosing. The winning team in each regional tournament is invited to play in the finals tournament during the fall for a chance to win up to $50,000 in donations for the team’s chosen charity. Arthur Hall Insurance’s Dan Mackarevich and Bob Hackett teamed up with Rob Brown and Ryan Moyer of MVP Capital in early July to play on behalf of the Arc of Chester County. The Arthur Hall Insurance/MVP Capital team finished in second place in the field of 13 other groups.

The Arc of Chester County was formed 66 years ago by parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since that time, the Arc of Chester County has grown to provide a lifetime of services to individuals with disabilities and their families, serving 3,000 individuals annually. Dinniman Meets Rescue Dogs State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently met with representatives from Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania, a Chester Countybased nonprofit organization that assists local and state law enforcement in responding to the recovery of lost or missing persons. The organization, now in its 29th year, also provides highly trained search and rescue dogs and handlers to voluntarily assist in a variety of searches and services, including disaster recovery, evidence searches, recovery of human remains, vehicle searches, wilderness and urban trailing, search management, water searches, and searches in the wake of a disaster, fire or building collapse. All services are provided free of charge. Founded by Vicki and Chuck Wooters of East Goshen, Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania has supported the successful recovery of numerous searches and ultimately saved the lives of missing, injured, emotionally distressed, and disoriented individuals and children. Over nearly three decades, the group has assisted in searches throughout Pennsylvania and as far as Idaho, Colorado, and Canada.

Currently, Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania is supported by a core staff of four volunteers and five dogs. While Wooters said that any dog can be trained to search, her team consists of German shepherds. The dogs are obtained by the group through purchase or donation and trained for two to three years before they become operational. Each dog specializes in certain types of searches or purposes. Some dogs are trained in multiple purposes or tasks. The dogs live and work with Wooters and, upon retirement, usually at about age 10, live out the rest of their days as family pets. Wooters recounted the many dogs the group has trained over the years and how hundreds of deployments have resulted in dozens of “live finds,” in which missing persons were located and brought to safety. In addition, the location of crucial evidence has helped bring criminals to justice and the recovery of human remains has brought some sense of closure to victims’ families. Wooters and her team are also working with Dinniman to develop state standards to guide the estimated 50 search and rescue dog

groups operating in the commonwealth. While Wooters and Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania have amassed dozens of credentials and certifications over the years, there are no uniform state standards.

Dinniman said that he and his staff are currently looking at laws in place in other states, like Virginia, to guide the process and will reach out to additional partners in the search and rescue dog community for input.

The Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge St., Phoenixville, will host its eighth annual Splatterfest Horror Movie Marathon on Saturday, Aug. 31. The evening will include trailers, prizes, exclusive event posters and T-shirts, as well as the fifth SplatterFeast. Doors for general admission and SplatterFeast attendees will open at 5 p.m., with the five-movie marathon starting

at 6 p.m. and running until approximately 2 a.m. Various ticket prices have been set. For tickets and additional details, readers may visit https://thecolonialtheatre.com /programs/splatterfest-8. State Sen. Andy Dinniman (left) recently met with Vicki Wooters of Search and Rescue Dogs of Pennsylvania and Rini, a 2year-old search and rescue dog. Rini specializes in tracking and trailing. She is trained for both wilderness and urban missing persons searches, as well as human remains detection and evidence recovery. She also is a therapy dog.

at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Root’s Country Market in Manheim will feature 200 juried artists, demonstrations, and live music. Admission and parking are free.

safety, and backpack safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that school buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. The majority of school bus-related injuries occur while students are boarding and getting off the bus. Over the last 10 years, the NHTSA estimates that nearly two-thirds of

school-age pedestrians who were fatally injured by school buses or other vehicles were hurt after being struck while entering or exiting the bus. While at the bus stop, children must remember to stay at least five large steps away from the road and wait to board until the driver says so. When leaving the bus, students should make sure there is no oncoming traffic and wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing busy streets. While on the bus, students should observe the rules and stay seated at all times. The center aisle should also be kept clear of backpacks. Students may walk or bike to school if the school permits. School tends to begin during the morning rush hour, so students

“Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and

formed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international
