The POINT To Present “An Evening With Tim Tebow” By Francine Fulton
Sports celebrity Tim Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner, former National Football League (NFL) player and current professional baseball player, will be the featured speaker at The Parkesburg POINT’s fall fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 10. “Get to The POINT: An Evening With Tim Tebow” will take place at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 226 Highland Road, Atglen. Tebow will discuss his book, “Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life’s Storms,” which details the highs and lows of his career in the NFL and offers practical advice from Scripture about dealing with life’s challenges. There will also be a question-and-answer period. Dwayne Walton, executive director of The POINT, is excited to have Tebow speaking at The POINT’s fall event. “Every year we look for someone special to bring to our community to tell their story,” he stated. “Tim will share his
personal story, as well as his faith journey.” “He will speak about the book, but he will also share the story of the twists and turns his life has taken and how his faith had carried him through this,” added Debbie Shupp, The POINT’s director of development. Tebow played three years in the NFL for the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets. Currently, he is pursuing a career in professional baseball as a member of the New York Mets organization. He also serves as a college football analyst for ESPN. Tebow is the author of two New York Times best-selling books, “Through My Eyes,” which was named the No. 1 sports and religion book of 2011, and “Shaken,” which was released in 2016 and was named the 2017 Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Book of the Year. Tebow was born in the Philippines as the son of missionaries and has returned to the Philippines many times throughout his life to spread God’s Word and to serve those in need. He established the Tim Tebow Foundation in

2010. The foundation helps make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses, builds “Timmy’s Playrooms” in children’s hospitals and provides life-changing surgeries to children of the Philippines through the Tebow CURE Hospital. The foundation also sponsors Night to Shine, prom-like events that are held worldwide on the same evening each year for people with special needs. Throughout the evening, Tebow makes special guest appearances at Night to Shine events around the world. Locally, a Night to Shine event is sponsored by Freedom Life Church. See Tim Tebow pg 2

In 2019, more than 1,800 households received free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in Chester County. VITA is seeking volunteers for 2020. VITA is a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is offered across the United States in thousands of sites each year. The VITA program just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Families and individuals who need help filing but who cannot afford to pay a preparer are encouraged to use VITA’s free services. Volunteers ensure that low- and moderate-income families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase their refund. Since 2004, Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) in Coatesville has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County. LTM began with a few volunteers preparing

The VITA program is a short-term community outreach opportunity that benefits low- and moderate-income households and offers flexible volunteer hours during the day, evening, and weekend. No prior experience is necessary. People from all walks of life are trained and volunteer through VITA. Opportunities in Chester County are available in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, and West Chester. Free IRS certification training, including Continuing Education credit for legal professionals, is available in a classroom setting or online. as part of its 21st Century Museums initiative. AIRA is one of the ways in which the agency is incorporating technology into daily museum operations in an effort to better serve underserved guests. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has already been geo-fenced for this program, which technically went online June 1, so the museum is already set up to allow the AIRA app to work for guests who have it. The other participating PHMC test sites are the Erie Maritime Museum, Old Economy Village, Pennsylvania Military Museum, Landis Valley Museum, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. Spring Gulch RV Campground, 475 Lynch Road, New Holland, celebrated its annual First Responders Weekend during the weekend of Sept. 7 and 8. The campground has hosted First Responders Weekend for more than 20 years. Spring Gulch RV Campground holds the celebration as a way to give back to local first responders. The campground
estimates there were nearly 100 first responders and family members taking part in the weekend’s festivities. In addition to showing appreciation to local first responders, the event gave campers a chance to learn more about what first responders do. Children were able to explore a fire truck visit and even use the fire hose.

Bob Landis Jr., president of Leon C. Landis Inc., and his father, Bob Landis, are celebrating a milestone this month: the 60th anniversary of the elder Bob’s very first fuel delivery in 1959. On Labor Day weekend that year, Bob, who was just 16 years old and driving on a stamped learner’s permit, made his first fuel delivery to John and Joann Irwin at their home. While her husband has since passed away, Joann remains a loyal customer of Leon Landis Inc. To thank Joann for her 60 years of customer loyalty and to commemorate his first fuel delivery, Bob drove to Joann’s home himself to top off her tank for free. Bob Jr. also marked the occasion by presenting his father with a belated employee bonus. Company representatives note that during Bob’s decades of delivery to customers, his record has remained clear of any accidents. Unable to bring himself to fully retire, he will continue to serve the customers of Leon Landis by working in the office.

Adam Nagle, who became executive director of The Factory Ministries earlier in the summer, has never trained for a long bike ride. Looking ahead to the end of October, he likes to joke with Tim Rogers, lead pastor of Grace Point Church of Paradise, about a bicycle ride The Factory has planned to take them to the Boston area. Nagle keeps volunteering to drive a vehicle up instead of riding a bike, and Rogers keeps responding, “That’s not an option.” All joking aside, a group of about 14 bicyclists and a few motorcycle riders will leave Paradise by 5 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, with a goal of riding up to 150 miles per day for three days to arrive at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., on Monday, Oct. 28. Among those riders will be Pedro Rivera, Pennsylvania secretary of education, and Pam Smith, special assistant in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The riders will be divided into smaller groups, and each of those segments will have its own support vehicle. At the end of the trip, the team will be join in the second annual Leadership Institute for Faith and Education (L.I.F.E) Convening organized by Irvin Scott, Harvard senior lecturer on education. It has been a tradition for those involved with The Factory to bicycle to conventions in other states for a number of years. According to Rogers, Scott had heard about how The Factory, Grace Point Church, and the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) had partnered in the Together Initiative. One result of that partnership was an effort to move PVSD from as low as No. 14 to as high as No. 3 of 17 school districts ranked on

kindergarten readiness. The three organizations, along with Paradise Township representatives, first partnered in the initiative in 2012. As part of that effort, Rogers asked school superintendent Dr. Erik Orndorff an important question. “Tim asked me, ‘If you had $25,000 and 4,000 man hours, what would you do?’” Orndorff recalled. Orndorff said he would provide more prekindergarten education in the district. “We knew that the earlier we could get into the home and read to (children) and have parents read to (children, the better),” said Orndorff. “I said (to Rogers), ‘If we could get preschool education for everyone who is underresourced, that is where we would put the money.” Orndorff’s answer led to the hiring of Katie Beiler, preschool literacy liaison, whose chief mission is to reach out to families in the area who are not receiving prekindergarten services. Beiler visits homes and works to strengthen literacy education in young children. Her office is located at The Factory, and she is supervised by both the school district and Rogers. Her salary is covered by Grace Point Church. Since then, Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County has added Lisa Eckert to the prekindergarten education program. Her office and a Headstart classroom are both housed at The Factory. “We found that collaboration has multiplication signs rather than addition signs between the partnerships,” said Rogers. “It doesn’t just add up; it multiplies up.” Nagle noted that a program to promote mentoring of PVSD elementary school students will be starting as well. Karla Neff, who will work for CAP, The Factory, and PVSD, will focus on social services as they relate to education. “With education, if we don’t take care of basic needs, we are spinning our wheels,” said Orndorff of the importance of Neff’s new position. “We need to walk with people.” Scott had heard about the Together Initiative and Beiler when he called Rogers to invite Together representatives to the first L.I.F.E. Convening. “Their premise is to increase student outcomes by strategically partnering faith-based groups with educational institutions around the country,” explained Rogers, noting that L.I.F.E. explores the pillar of education that requires family and parent engagement for students to be successful. “Their belief is that we can increase outcomes if we can weave together the strong relationships that exist in faith-based organizations and educational organizations,” said Rogers. Members of the group from Paradise who will attend the convening will have opportunities to share their stories and to learn from others at the event. The Factory is seeking support to help fund the riders who represent The Factory on the bicycle trip to Boston. Readers who would like more information or to support the team may visit https://thefactoryministries.com/give -to-the-factory-ministries.

DMVA Issues Reminder For Veterans Kennedy Earns Eagle Scout Award The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. Former military members should register with the DMVA and apply for federal health care benefits soon after transitioning to civilian life. Hand-in-hand with applying for benefits is safeguarding military paperwork so these important documents are not misplaced or lost. Not having easy access to military paperwork could cause unnecessary delays when applying for benefits years down the road. Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry by computer or mobile
device at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/healthbenefits/ apply/. Also, it is important for veterans to safeguard their DD-214/215 and other military documents by immediately filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information
needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. These documents can also be uploaded to the Veterans Registry for safe keeping with the DMVA. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD-214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are the NGB-22 and NGB-23. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD-214/215 or other military documentation can call 717-861-8910 or email RA-REQ@pa.gov.

Piercing Word from pg 1 Piercing Word, which is based in Lancaster, performs dramatic and musical presentations using word-for-word text from the ESV translation of the Bible as the script. The group aims to entertain, inform and spread the Word of God, while promoting memorization of the Bible. “I love the visual of it. It’s an outreach to our community in Gap and the surrounding areas,” said WordUP lead follower Buck Mowday. “It’s another avenue to bring the Scripture alive; it draws you in. It’s an opportunity to come, to sit, to enjoy and let the Holy Spirit fill your heart.” “Parables of Jesus” features a cast of four performers plus a drummer. “It’s an Africaninspired telling of the stories Jesus told, so it will be a very fun, high-energy performance,” said Piercing Word executive director Aaron House. “It’s very imaginative in the way it’s portrayed.” The script is directly from the Bible, using excerpts from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.
“In seeing the parables of Jesus come to life on stage, I think the audience will find a new appreciation for the parables, even the reason for the parables,” House explained. “There are lots of opportunities for humor, as well as conviction in seeing the truth in the parables, and, as always, we give the challenge to memorize God’s Word.” Promoting the memorization of Scripture is the mission of Piercing Word. “We don’t just perform Scripture; we challenge everyone everywhere we go to memorize Scripture for themselves. That’s always the goal. Our mission statement is to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church,” House said. “Jesus changes lives. Memorizing the Bible has changed how I walk with Jesus and the way that I interact with the Lord and others on a daily basis.” Mowday pointed out that memorization of the Bible makes Scripture available when a printed copy or a computer is not.
“The more Scripture you can get into your mind, the better focus you’re going to have on living your life for Jesus,” he said. Piercing Word will be back at WordUP with its “Christmas Through the Ages” performance on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. Earlier that day, WordUP members will be involved with the Gap-area Wreaths Across America effort with a ceremony at Salisbury Park and the placing of wreaths on veterans’ graves at area cemeteries. For more information on Piercing Word, including a schedule of performances and memorization workshops, readers may visit www.piercingword.org or www.facebook.com/piercingword or call 888-244-3461. WordUP Community Ministries is located in the Dutchland Corporate Center, 160 Route 41, Gap. Joseph Michael Kennedy Jr. of Gap has earned his Eagle Scout rank as a member of Boy Scout Troop 28. Joseph joined the Cub Scouts in elementary school and earned every rank through Boy Scouts. For his Eagle Scout project, Joseph installed informational nature signage along the walking trail at Paradise Community Park. A cum laude graduate of Pequea Valley High School, Joseph now attends the honors college at Millersville University, where he is majoring in engineering.
and global missions. “We want to include the community and let them know who we are and what’s going on at World Mission Café,” said Monique Moreno, culture and events coordinator. “We just want to include everyone.” World Mission Café typically holds a worship service on the final Friday evening of each month at the café. The outdoor event this month is an effort to reach out to more people. “We do a night of worship here in the café monthly,” said Nate Hoskins, media coordinator. “It’s a part of what we do here in the café that we’re excited to take out into the community.” The evening will begin with games and free food, including hot dogs, chips and beverages, at 5 p.m. There will also be door prizes donated by local businesses. The worship portion of the program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include music from
GCC’s worship band and at least one other local band. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. “We’ll have a time of worship, a time of prayer and a time where we will be explaining some of the things the café does,” GCC pastor Cody Hall said. The evening will include information on the missions that World Mission Café supports locally, in the United States and overseas, including missionaries in Kenya and the Middle East. Locally, café administrator Alli Zimmerman is a Young Life leader at Octorara Area JuniorSenior High School. Young Life is a Christian-based club offered for youths at the school. “It’s a ministry to reach high school kids, to be there for them when they need somebody and mentor them,” she said, adding that Young Life has been a beneficiary of the café’s proceeds. “The money we sent to Young Life was used to send 53 kids to camps over the summer.”
World Mission Café, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Starting in October, World Mission Café will expand its hours to also be open Wednesdays. Menu items include coffee, tea, specialty beverages, bagels, pastries and salads. There are no set prices, only suggested donations. Patrons are free to pay what they feel is appropriate, knowing that proceeds will go to mission projects. They are also encouraged to talk with café staff members about missions or make prayer requests. “ We are tucked away back here, so we want to make people more aware of what we’re doing and what God’s doing,” Moreno said. For more information on World Mission Café, readers may visit www.facebook.com/world missioncafe or www.world missioncafe.org. More information on GCC can be found at www.gapcommunity.church.

Church Dedicates Columbarium The Episcopal Church of the Trinity in Coatesville recently dedicated its newly constructed columbarium affixed to the existing church structure. The Rt. Rev. Daniel G.P. Gutierrez, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, concelebrated with the Rev. Sherry Deets, rector. As part of the dedication ceremony, former members Lawrence and Alberta Taliaferro were the first to be officially inurned in the columbarium. The niche was opened and the two urns placed by Victor J. Shanley, chairman of the Columbarium Committee, under whose management the columbarium was built. The niche and its contents were then blessed by Bishop Gutierrez. The congregation celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018 and continues to serve the greater Coatesville community. For more information about the columbarium, readers may call the church office at 610-384-4771.

During the renewal process, the Brandywine provided extensive documentation and was subject to a comprehensive third-party evaluation prior to achieving this distinction. The process also allowed Brandywine staff members the opportunity to review and revise their current organizational policies and standards to ensure the organization was continuing to meet and exceed the highest accreditation standards set forth by the Land Trust Alliance. As a result of these efforts, the Land Trust Accreditation Commission awarded renewal accreditation, signing its confidence in the Conservancy’s capability to protect land and steward its easements in perpetuity. The Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art is one of 1,363 land trusts across the U.S. according to the Land Trust Alliance’s most recent National Land Trust Census. The Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art has achieved renewal of its accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance. The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national high-quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Since 1967, the Brandywine Conservancy and Museum of Art has sought to protect and conserve the land, water, natural and cultural resources in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. The Conservancy currently holds more than 485 conservation and agricultural easements and has facilitated the permanent preservation of more than 66,000 acres of land. It was also one of the first conservation organizations to be awarded accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2008. Since then, the Brandywine Conservancy has successfully completed the accreditation renewal process twice, maintaining its accreditation status for more than a decade. EMM Holds Global Fair Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) held the annual Global Fair, a missions and culture event, on July 13 at the Hans Herr House and Museum, drawing an estimated 1,600 visitors. Attendees had opportunities to hear a number of international performers on the fair’s new World Stage and to interact with EMM workers and community organizations, purchase food, or play children’s games at more than 50 stands representing about 30 different cultures.
The variety of international cuisine available at Global Fair has always been a popular feature. Emerson Sampaio (center), who was born in Angola, sold Angolan beans with Portuguese sausage. Sampaio, who owns HUBUB World Market in Lancaster, partnered with the Lancaster entrepreneur and owner of Xulbo and Bridge, Mustafa Nuur (not pictured), who served Somali food at the same stand.
Mu Kaw, originally from Burma (Myanmar), performed two original pieces on the new World Stage at Global Fair. The 22-year-old Karen musician has been in the U.S. since 2013 and attends Habecker Mennonite Church in Lancaster.
