Chester County sets annual 4-H auction

The annual Chester County 4-H benefit auction, which will offer people an opportunity to bid on items like artwork, antiques, handmade quilts and collectibles, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Romano 4-H Center, located at 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook.

The event will include a silent auction that will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a live auction at 6 p.m. Admission is free, and all are invited to attend.

The silent auction will feature many products and services donated by local residents and businesses. The live auction will feature fresh produce, plants, fine art, home decor and more.

“We will have lots of mushrooms,” said Amy Pippin, 4-H volunteer and leader of the Windy Hollow 4-H Club of Coatesville. “We will have pumpkins and mums. The local feed mills will also donate items.”

Township slates Community Day

Residents of Sadsbury Township are invited to attend Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Events, which will include children’s activities, live music and a chance to win prizes, will be held rain or shine at the township building, located at 7182 White Oak Road, Christiana.

According to event organizers, the purpose of the first-time event is to allow local residents and business owners to meet the township supervisors and other staff members and to promote unity and friendship.

Children’s events will begin at 10:15 a.m. with a story time provided by the Moores Memorial Library of Christiana. Following the story time, the other children’s activities will begin. “There will be a lollipop game, a bean bag toss game, a candy scramble and pumpkin painting,” said Lin Newlin, a member of the organizing committee. “All those events are free. Some of the games will have prizes.”

There will also be hayrides around the property, weather permitting.

Hot dogs, chips, drinks and ice cream will be provided by the

Youth members from local 4-H clubs also contribute to the auction.

“Our clubs put together themed baskets using items they gathered or donated items from their families,” said Pippin. “That is a big part of it. People want to buy those items because they know that the kids put time and effort into them.”

Additionally, 4-H youths will provide assistance during the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley.

The Dairy Cart will offer milkshakes and ice cream. Other food will be donated and prepared by staff members of the West Grove Diner. “We will have pulled pork, mac and cheese and chili,” Pippin said. “They will be available as meals.” There will also be a sale of homemade baked goods.

Organizers are seeking donations for the auction, including handmade items, farm products, gift certificates and tools. Especially needed are larger items for the live auction. People may

drop off items at the 4-H Center on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 20 to 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on the day of the auction from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are also needed to provide assistance on the day of the auction. Those interested in volunteering may contact Pippin at amygracepippin@gmail.com. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of maintaining the 4-H Romano Center, which is free to use for all the 4-H clubs in Chester County. The Romano Center contains meeting rooms and a large exhibition and activity area, as well as restroom facilities. It is used during the annual 4-H Fair, along with the livestock building that houses the swine, dairy and goat exhibits.

Parkesburg churches to host outdoor worship

Gateway Church and IMPACT

Church are joining together to offer Worship in the Park on Friday, Sept. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Parkesburg’s Minch Park. The event will include a time of worship, music and baptisms.

IMPACT Church pastor Mike Bailey said that he and pastor Scott Feather from Gateway Church have been planning the outdoor event for about six months. “We were talking about the potential of doing something in

the park, and conversations kept leading us to this idea of bringing the two teams together and pooling our resources,” said Bailey. “We wanted to make something big and great and free to the community.”

Activities will take place on the upper field at the park. “It is a BYOC - bring your own chair - event,” noted Bailey.

Two flatbed trucks will be set up in the park that will serve as a stage. A live band composed of members from both churches will provide the worship music. “There

are around 15 people in the worship band between the two churches,” said Bailey, noting that the musicians have been practicing in advance of the event. “We have bass and electric guitars, keyboards and several vocalists.”

“We will have projectors with a screen so people will be able follow along, and we will give out information on both churches,” Bailey added. “Scott and I will be available to answer questions and to talk to people.”

Also included will be a short message from the pastors, a time for prayer and baptisms. “We will have a portable (baptistry) out there, and both churches will be offering baptisms,” Bailey said. “We already have a few people who have pre-signed up (to be baptized).”

The Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) will assist with parking and traffic and will fill the baptistry.

Bailey said that Minch Park was chosen as the venue because of its central location. “It will be a great night with a lot of worship,” Bailey said. “We are hoping the community will come over and see what is going on and stay for a while and meet some new people.”

In addition to the upcoming outdoor worship event, IMPACT Church is currently collecting winter wear for its annual Coat Giveaway on Saturday, Oct. 21. Donations will be accepted in the church lobby through Sunday, Oct. 15. Items needed are new or gently used coats as well as gloves, mittens, scarves, hats and boots.

KVFD, 329 W. First Ave., Parkesburg, is also accepting winter wear through Sunday, Oct. 15. Donations can be placed in the box in the firehouse lobby.

Minch Park is located at 400 West St., Parkesburg. In the event of inclement weather, Worship in the Park will take place at Gateway Church, 160 Cowan Road, Parkesburg.

Walking tour to focus on health care

Chester County History Center will offer “Plagues and Pestilence” walking tours on Saturdays, Sept. 23, Sept. 30, and Oct. 7. Tours will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

In the early 1800s, West Chester billed itself as an elegant and healthful place, but the reality was very different. Words like cholera, diphtheria, rabies, and smallpox struck fear into the heart of every resident, especially those with small children.

Treatments were almost worse than the diseases: Bloodletting, blistering, and mercury were all part of the early medicinal arsenal. The walking tour will explore how diseases impacted families, how they changed burial practices, and how the borough’s medical and scientific minds worked to combat death.

This walking tour will last approximately 90 minutes and cover 1.5 miles. Participants should arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled

start time to check in at the center at 225 N. High St., West Chester. Although attendees will stay predominantly on sidewalks, the terrain may be uneven in places. Subject matter may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

There is a fee. History center members may obtain a discount code.

To sign up, search for “Plagues and Pestilence: A Walking Tour” at www.eventbrite.com.

township. Christiana Fire Company will have chicken barbecue dinners available to purchase.

The Rockdale Boys from Delaware County will be on hand to perform bluegrass and gospel music. “They will have three 45-minute sets that start at 11 a.m.,” Newlin noted.

All attendees will have an opportunity to win prizes such as a gift basket from Stoltzfus Feed & Supply, a gift card from Pizza Box in Gap and a cornhole set.

“Adults 18 and over will be given one ticket when they arrive, and prizes will be awarded by a random drawing. There is nothing to purchase,” Newlin noted. Drawings will be held every half hour beginning at 10:30 a.m., with the final drawing at 3 p.m. People do not have to be present to win.

All events will take place outdoors, but in the case of rain, activities will be moved inside the garage area of the township building.

“The chicken barbecue is a fundraiser for the fire company. All the other activities and food are free,” Newlin said, adding, “Area businesses have really supported us to make this happen. Some have donated prizes or donated cash or food items.”

For more information or to volunteer to help during the event, call the township office at 610-593-6796. A complete timeline of Community Day activities can be found at www.sadsburytown shiplancaster.org.

beginning on Sept. 28 for children ages 5 to 12. The program will be led by Ashley Radcliff, the church’s music director.

Children are invited to attend VBC while their parents take part in the church’s adult Bible study led by pastor Mark Beideman, which will take place at the same time. “We’re going to do the same things that we did during VBScrafts, games, music and Bible study,” Radcliff noted. The theme of VBC will be “Knights of North Castle,” and the program will revolve around knights and dragons. According to the curriculum, North Castle is a hidden frozen land, where its knights are on a quest to find the king’s armor. Through Bible stories, children will be able to learn about the components of God’s protective “armor,” such as truth, peace, faith and salvation, and they will learn that the armor of God always protects them.

“(‘Knights of North Castle’) was a vacation Bible school curriculum that we had in 2020. Because of the pandemic, we did not get to use it,” Radcliff noted. “We will use it now and go through that curriculum.”

Radcliff emphasized that VBC is open to all youngsters. It is not necessary to be a congregation member at Parkesburg UMC to attend. It is also not mandatory for parents to attend the Bible study. For more information or to register, visit www.vbs mate.com/events/Parkesburg UMC/28324. Registration can also be completed in person on the first night of VBC.

Parkesburg UMC is located at 411 Main St., Parkesburg. To learn more about the church, join the Parkesburg UMC public Facebook group.

Events to celebrate the life of Andrew Moore

Descendants of Andrew Moore, one of the founders of Sadsbury Friends Meeting, are invited to attend a celebration of the 300th anniversary of his arrival in the United States. The event will include an open house at Greenwood Forge, Andrew Moore’s homestead, 300 Swan Road, Atglen, on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 1 to 7 p.m. for Moore family members.

The event is being hosted by Bill Wilde, who owns Greenwood Forge, which was Moore’s original homestead from 1723 to 1763. A direct descendant of Moore, Wilde has been living in and completing restoration work at the home since 1986.

“(Moore) got off the boat in 1723 from Ireland in New Castle, Delaware,” said Wilde, noting that Moore was encouraged to leave Ireland and come to the United States by his brothers. “He had two brothers already in Chester County that came over ahead of him. They established one of the first gristmills on the Brandywine River in Downingtown.” Although it no longer exists, there was also gristmill on the homestead property.

Wilde was always interest-

ed in acquiring the property.

“I always knew it was my ancestors’ homestead because I was told that as a little boy growing up in Parkesburg,” he stated.

Wilde explained that he made a connection with the homestead’s previous owner Hugh Douglass, who was his French teacher in seventh and eighth grades at Octorara.

“We struck up a friendship (because of) our mutual connection that we are both descendants of Andrew Moore,” Wilde said. “I told him I would be interested in buying the house. He told me that he didn’t want anyone else to have it.”

Wilde has since been restoring the home, with a goal of bringing the house back to its 18th-century appearance. Restoration work has included painting, glazing and painting the window sashes, replacing windows and reconstructing an outdoor retaining wall. “I do all the restoration work myself,” Wilde shared. “It is a passion of mine.”

Tours of the home will be featured during the event on Oct. 14, and visitors will be

able to see the home’s 18thcentury walk-in fireplace. The day will also include food and demonstrations by craftsmen. “(The event) is for descendants of Andrew Moore and there are quite a few of them in this area and across the country,” said Wilde. “We will have a large tent set up outside. People can meet and greet one another and talk about their ancestral lines. Later in the day, we will have an Irish band coming.”

Following the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service on Oct. 15 at Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road Gap, which is open to the public, a private Colonial dinner will be served at the homestead at 1 p.m. “We will serve an 18thcentury menu, some of which will be cooked in the fireplace,” Wilde said. The dinner is limited to 26 attendees, and a fee will be charged per person.

Wilde has established a Facebook page - www.face book.com/andrewmoore homestead - that details the restoration work that has been completed at the site, as well as information about the upcoming reunion events.

According to chief development officer Amy Bielicki, the YMCA awarded more than $2 million in financial aid to 11,000 families in Chester County last year to ensure they had access to

child care, summer camps, programs and memberships at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. Lawson’s goal is to increase that number.

Lawson plans to partner locally with community leaders, YGBW board members and YGBW donors to advance the YMCA mission and to

reach more underserved communities throughout the region. In addition to a strong partnership strategy, Lawson is aware of the important role that DEI and representation play in the process.

The YMCA has a large workforce of more than 1,600 employees that spans the entire county and beyond. Lawson’s goal is for the YGBW to be viewed as an employer of choice in the region.

Lawson, a nationally recog-

nized expert in nonprofit business and DEI, serves as the first African American leader of YGBW. In his first month, Lawson was invited by the National Association of YMCAs to speak about Board Equity and Governance at the YMCA General Assembly conference held in Atlanta, Ga. Chester County 4-H presents awards

One member of Chester County 4-H recently received the Spirit of 4-H Award, and three others were presented with certificates of achievement.

The Spirit of 4-H Award honors the 4-H member who has demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community. Club leaders nominate one member from each club, and nominees are asked to complete and return an application. The 4-H Program Development Committee reviews the applications and selects the winner. The award was first presented in 1998 by the Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club.

This year, the Chester

County Spirit of 4-H Award was presented to Emma Uhlman, a 10-year 4-H member who participates in the Beef, Sheep, and Swine clubs. The West Whiteland Township resident credits 4-H with helping to prepare her for the future, discover a passion for agriculture and teach her about hard work. She has engaged in several community events to promote agriculture and made many friends through her 4-H journey. Her leader, Tiffany Bell, noted that Uhlman is highly motivated and always willing to volunteer for leadership roles within the Beef Club. Uhlman plans to attend Penn State in the fall. She received a plaque in recognition of her Spirit of 4-H Award, and her name will be emblazoned on a plaque displayed at the 4-H Center.

The winners of the certificates of achievement are Audrey Ibach, River Lease and Olivia Macomber.

Ibach is a six-year member of the Northern Chester County Horse Club. In this club, she has held various leadership positions, helped with the club’s horse show and participated in several community events representing 4-H. She has attended the 4-H State Leadership conference to build her leadership and communication skills and competed in the hippology contest to expand her equine skills.

Lease is a nine-year member who participates in the 4-H livestock program, raising and showing goats, sheep and beef as well as being a mem-

ber of the livestock judging team. He said his 4-H experiences have opened his eyes to careers in agriculture and led him to his current job at a local dairy farm as well as his own small farm-to-table business selling homegrown meat and eggs. His leader, Betsy Macauley, said he exemplifies the spirit of 4-H and has demonstrated significant leadership development.

Lease mentors less experienced members of the judging team without hesitation and positively represents Chester County at local, regional, state and national livestock events.

Macomber is in her final year of 4-H after an exemplary nine-year 4-H career. She credits 4-H with helping her grow to be the person she is today and helping her to transition from being shy to being able to speak to groups with confidence. The 4-H community has continued to

Physicians can also recommend vaccinations or other measures to protect one’s health while traveling. In addition, a pretrip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that will be needed during a vacation.

2022, so travelers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they take enough money. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature of travel since the onset of the pandemic has underscored the utility of travel insurance. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.

- Privately share the trip itinerary. Prior to departing, travelers should share their itinerary with friends and

family members. They should avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make them a target for criminals at home and at their destination. The itinerary should include where travelers are staying, the dates they will visit certain locations and the dates of activities they will be engaging in on the trip. Seniors rediscovering the joy of traveling can take various measures to make their trips more safe.
