The Lady Braves varsity field hockey team at Octorara Area High School recently held a carbon monoxide (CO) awareness game during its home season opener to help educate the public about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. The event, held on Sept. 7, also featured the dedication of a new sound system at the field hockey field that was provided by the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation.

The foundation was founded by family members of Carly Imbierowicz, who, along with her friend Daulton “Daulty” Pointek, died on Nov. 22, 2014, when a broken exhaust pipe allowed carbon monoxide to leak into the car they were in. Both were students at Octorara Area High School, where Carly was a member of the field hockey team. The foundation sponsors the annual Octorara Angels Rainbow Run and Carbon Monoxide

Awareness Event and provides scholarships to Octorara students. Proceeds from this year’s Rainbow Run, held during the Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science and Technology Expo (OABEST) event in June, were used to purchase the new sound system. Although Carly was not a member of the track team, previous Rainbow Run events have benefited track improvements at Octorara per a suggestion by the school district. See CO Awareness pg 7

The Carly Imbierowicz Foundation provided the funding to install a new sound system for the field hockey team at Octorara Area High School. Participating in the dedication ceremony were (from left) Lindsey Lespier holding Carly Rose, Jennifer Achenbach, Donna Imbierowicz, Matt Imbierowicz, Katie Jamison, Paige Lowry and (front) Foxy, a carbon monoxide awareness mastiff puppy.

Animal Rescue Benefits From Event LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville recently received a donation of $2,460 as a result of an event conceived and managed by a Pennsylvania College of Technology student. Victoria A. Sosar of Berwick is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus on sport and event management. As part of an internship this summer with Beale Manor in Parkesburg, a special events venue in Chester County, Sosar was given the opportunity to plan and hold an event of her own. Sosar planned a Sip and Drool Festival to benefit LaMancha Animal Rescue in Unionville. The family-friendly event included activities for both children and pets. Sosar also lined up several food vendors, 20 craft and product vendors, a variety of gift baskets that were given out as prizes, musical entertainment and a special presentation by the Chester County K-9 Unit. The event not only raised funds for

teenagers. “We will have racks of clothing on hangers and tables (where) everything will be folded and sorted nicely,” said Jackie Fuller, who is co-chairing the sale along with Trish Goodman. A consignment sale is held at PJP II twice each year, in the fall and again in the spring. For the upcoming sale, season-appropriate attire will be offered. “We will have winter coats, hats, boots and snowsuits,” said Fuller. “We will have racks with boys’ and girls’ holiday clothing like girls’ sparkly dresses. We also usually get a lot of Halloween costumes.” Also offered for sale will be First Communion dresses, as well as toys and books, electronics and sporting equipment, including bicycles, scooters, ice skates and

inline skates. Organizers make every effort to keep the checkout lines moving, so there is less of a wait for shoppers. “We will have 10 checkout lines, including two express lines,” Fuller noted. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale. Fuller said that items sold at the sale are in good used condition. “We don’t take anything with rips or stains. We go through every item to make sure it’s OK. If it’s not OK, we’ll remove it and return it to the consignor. We (also) make sure all the toys work.” Parent volunteers help run the event with help from PJP II sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. The youths provide assistance with cleanup and setup, which includes transporting items to the second floor, where the gym is located. “They do a lot of the heavy lifting. They take the tables and chairs upstairs and help consignors bring in their items,” Fuller noted. “Some of the kids stay after school to help us and some of the teachers let them come and help us at the end of the school day (on Friday).” At the conclusion of the sale, sellers will have the option of taking back their unsold merchandise. Goods that the consignors do not take with them will be donated to charity. The Kids’ Fall Outgrown Sale is open to the public, and admission is free. All proceeds will benefit the students of PJP II. PJP II serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade from four local churches - St. Peter in West Brandywine, Our Lady of the Rosary in Coatesville, St. Joseph in Coatesville and Our Lady of Consolation in Parkesburg. the registration for the walk. Starting at 10:30 a.m., children will be able to enjoy the Kidz Zone, which will include barrel train rides, face painting and balloon sculptor Mr. Pops. “He sculpts all kinds of balloons into animal sculptures. He’s also a great storyteller,” Wilson said. “Everything that we are offering for the families that day is 100 percent free. This is a fun-filled family day, and the Gap Park is a wonderful place to come out for the day.” Walking and pulling can build up an appetite, which can be easily satisfied with a chicken barbecue lunch that day. Half-chickens will be available from 10:30 a.m. to noon only. Chicken will be available on its own or as a meal with a roll and butter, chips, a beverage, applesauce and a cookie. Proceeds from the day will support Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, a nonprofit ministry that offers pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound to confirm a viable pregnancy, decision-making counseling, prenatal and childbirth education classes, parenting classes and healthy lifestyle education classes. The organization also has certified trainers who make sexual risk avoidance education programs available to schools and youth groups on request. “We obviously minister to women, but also to men and to families,” board member Jim Davis said. One of the newest additions to Cornerstone programming is a dating violence program. “Young girls and young boys are getting caught up in dating violence and not recognizing the danger signs, so we want parents and teens to be equipped,” Davenport said. For more information and to register, readers may call Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone at 717-442-8694, visit www.pregnancyresources.org or search for “Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone” on Facebook and choose “Events.”

Park, also referred to as Gap Park, 777 White Horse Road, Gap. The event, which will also feature a Kidz Zone, will be held rain or shine. At the event, participants may walk a route around the park or pull in a tug-of-war competition. People may raise money as individuals or teams by getting sponsors. “The purpose of our Walk and Pull for Life is not only a fundraiser, it is a time to take a stand for life,” said Cornerstone executive director Debbie Davenport. “Whether you are walking or pulling at this event, you show your support for life in a family-oriented, fun way.” The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will make roughly three laps on the walking trail at the park. The Pull for Life tug-of-war competition will follow the walk, with teams of five matching their strength against each other for the honor of taking home the grand prize trophy. “They pull for dear life. It is a lot of fun (and) it takes a lot of strength, so we are looking for strong men (and women) from the community, from churches and businesses - people who just want to come with a team of five and show their strength and pull for life,” development assistant Mary Wilson said. “Whoever the team is who wins, they get this enormous trophy they can keep for one year. Their name plate gets put on it,” Davenport added. Pulling teams may represent a business, a church group or other organization, or they may be teams of friends or families. Pull teams will be asked to pay a registration fee; walkers can walk for free but are encouraged to get individual sponsorships. As an incentive, individuals and teams that reach fundraising goals will have a chance to win gift cards. Music will be ongoing all morning, and there will be a chance to purchase T-shirts at

COMMUNITY FALL FESTIVAL

“When the field hockey team at Octorara wanted to have a CO Awareness Game, I thought it would be a perfect day to do a sound system dedication,” said Carly’s mother, Donna Imbierowicz, who was on hand at the ceremony to speak about the tragedy and the work of the foundation. “(Carly and Daulty) were on their way home from a movie and did not realize CO was coming into the passenger vents from a cracked exhaust,” she said during the ceremony. “It was a freak accident that I have since found out happens more than people think. I created a carbon monoxide awareness foundation in Carly’s memory to try and save more lives and to continue her legacy.” Foxy, a CO awareness mastiff puppy that was bred from Carly’s dog, Malachi, was also present at the event. The newly installed sound system features speakers that were mounted to the top of the scoreboard, as well as microphones. “ When Carly started field

The Lady Braves’ sound system is dedicated to Carly, Daulty and all (those) who have lost their lives to the ‘silent killer.’” Donna recalled that the night after the teenagers passed, a candlelight vigil was held on the field hockey field. “The entire field hockey field was full of so much love (from) friends, families, teachers, businesses, farmers, students from other districts, college students and strangers,” she said. “The night was breathtaking and magical. Carly’s teammates began calling themselves Carly’s Angels. Both our families were surrounded by so much love.” Future plans call for the Imbierowicz family and select Octorara students to travel to Harrisburg later this fall to be present when November is declared Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month in the state of the Pennsylvania. “CO is known as the silent killer because you cannot see it, taste it or smell it,” said Donna. “We hope that (people) will check

Speaker Encourages Students To Be Heroes Strongman and motivational speaker Jon Pritikin opens his presentations with pop music that fills an auditorium with excitement. He rolls real frying pans into shapes that resemble a Teflon burrito, and he bends metal parts into U shapes while holding them in his teeth. The entire Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and Pequea Valley Intermediate School student body roared when he performed at PVHS on Sept. 12. But when Pritikin told the story of a child who was bullied because of his learning

disabilities, the students’ reaction was serious and somber. Pritikin’s visit to the school to present an anti-bullying assembly was prompted by an email from the National Character Education Foundation received by Pequea Valley School District superintendent Erik Orndorff. The National Character Education Foundation works in partnership with Pennsylvania Rep. Bryan Cutler’s office. Pritikin is one of the most popular antibullying program presenters in the country. He holds Guinness Book records for a few of his feats of strength, and more than 8 million students worldwide have

heard his message. The story Pritikin told that quieted the auditorium full of energetic young people began when the boy was only 6 years old and placed in a classroom for students with special needs. As the boy grew, he often ate lunch alone. His parents divorced. He was bullied mercilessly by both students his own age and older boys who caused him physical injury. One teacher in particular discouraged him by telling him he would never become literate. Pritikin noted that the boy kept a brave face in front of others, waiting until he

was alone to cry. “Just because someone doesn’t cry in front of you doesn’t mean a (joke) hasn’t crossed the line and hurt that person,” Pritikin told the students. When the boy was finishing high school, he wanted to go to college. He was rejected everywhere he applied until one school accepted him on probation. The second year at college, he made the dean’s list, and he later earned his degree. “Today, that man is me,” Pritikin told the students. “My whole life, I have been judged, and I know what it’s like to be in a big room of people and feel like you don’t fit in. Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, will host its annual “World of Wheels” car show on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. Vehicles for display may arrive after 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, has been set as the rain date. “It’s been a fun event for five years now,” said pastor Stuart Osborne. “We had a nice turnout last year,” added coordinator Jerry Bandy, reporting that about 75 vehicles were exhibited, including several motorcycles and a vintage semi-truck that a man from Ephrata used to start his trucking business a number of decades ago. There are no restrictions on entries. “It’s open to pretty much any vehicle, from vintage cars to diesel trucks. Any modified vehicle that anybody wants to show off, they can come hang out,” Bandy said. In addition to the vehicles, the

wanted to play with.” Pritikin noted that although he has had throat surgery and speech therapy, he still stutters sometimes, and he still has problems with reading and writing. Pritikin took time during his presentation to encourage students in the audience who could identify with what he had experienced. “I know some of you are smiling on the outside but dying on the inside,” he said. “Your tough times will get better.” He added that making mistakes and failing at some tasks does not make a person a mistake or a failure. “You need to know how special you are,” he said. “You are not an accident, and you are not a mistake.” Recounting the story of one high school teacher who took the time to help him succeed, Pritikin said, “Sometimes all we need is someone to just be nice to us.” He charged the students, especially the seniors, not to let any student eat lunch alone. “We are going to be heroes,” he said. “We will be careful how we talk to each other.” As the assembly concluded, many students came forward to talk to Pritikin, and he welcomed them. PVHS principal Arlen Mummau took the microphone and echoed Pritikin’s message to the students, saying, “Let’s pick people up instead of putting them down.” Readers who would like to know more

Fall Festival from pg 1 Animals were another popular attraction last year. This year, there will be sheep and possibly goats for children to see up close. New this year will be a fun attraction for adults. “For the adults, we’ll have an inflatable that has three lanes,” explained Holderman. “You put a bungee on your back, and you run down to see how far you can get, and you compete to see who can go the farthest.” About 500 people attended the first edition of the Community Fall Festival. “It went very, very well. We couldn’t have had a better turnout,” committee chair Mandy Doutrich said. The Community Fall Festival is designed to be an outreach event that will be fun for everyone while increasing awareness of Bellevue Presbyterian Church. “ We want to make sure the community first of all knows that we’re here. Secondly, they know that we, as a church, want to care for and love our community,” Holderman said. “A simple way to do that is to put on an evening of fun - give them a free meal and time to enjoy together. If they have a family, they can come out and spend that evening together in a way that they do not have to provide or do anything; we’ll do it all for them. It’s a way for us to love on the community in which God has placed us.” To let people know more about the many things the church has to offer, attendees will be given an information packet when they register for the evening. “We will be giving information on our church, who we are, (and) ministry opportunities that we have to share with the love of Jesus Christ,” Holderman said. The Community Fall Festival will be held on the grounds of Bellevue Presbyterian Church at 810 Newport Ave., Gap. For more information, readers may visit www.face book.com/BellevueEPC and choose “Events.” More information about the church is available at www.bellevueepc.org or by contacting the church office at 717-442-4077 or office@bellevue epc.org.

Julie Haney, dance teacher with Cavod Academy, is excited to be instructing students in a new program the academy is developing for students with special needs. “Intro to Dance is for (students) age 13 and up,” said Haney, who has experience teaching students with developmental disabilities. Two classes, which are being held weekly, will explore a variety of types of dance. Students who take the class will have the opportunity to perform in Cavod’s annual recital.

New Holland. Savannah Huyard is teaching one of the classes, and Haney teaches the other class. According to Connie Dienner, executive director with Cavod, the idea for the program grew out of caregiver Deb Bacon’s requests for a class. “(Bacon) brings her clients to Cavod, and she has asked us to (hold dance classes),” explained Dienner, who added that seeing the value in each person is a foundational concept at the academy. “Cavod is a perfect place for (this) program because of the loving and accepting atmosphere here,” said Dienner. “No one will be treated differently. It’s about who you are as a person and not what you can or cannot do.” Twenty-two-year-old Lydia Leibee of New Holland has taken private dance lessons at Cavod for some time, but this fall as a member of the Intro to Dance program, she will take a class at Cavod for the first time. Lydia, who has taken worship dance with lyrical dance mixed in, shared that she loved taking lessons at the academy. “My teacher is awesome,” said Lydia, who noted that Huyard has been reassuring and always takes time to pray with her when she asks.

Cavod Academy student Lydia Leibee is excited to be taking a new class that the organization is offering for students with developmental disabilities. Two classes exploring a variety of styles of dance will meet weekly at Cavod in New Holland.

than physical. “It has opened a window (for Lydia),” said Helen, who added that Lydia had always dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast. “Even though (Lydia) recognizes she can’t do gymnastics, her (dance) recitals have been amazing.” Helen also spoke glowingly of Lydia’s experience meeting other students at Cavod. “She hasn’t had a lot of contact with other students, but when she has (met them), they have been welcoming and kind,” said Helen. “That doesn’t always come naturally, (so) that speaks highly of the academy, (and) it means so much to (Lydia).” Intro to Dance will delve into a number of types of dance, including jazz, modern, and hip-hop, but Haney said she plans to start with a focus on ballet. “Students will come in, stretch, work at the bar practicing positions and steps, (perform) some technical work, and then do across-the-floor progression type steps,” said Haney, who added that she plans to end each class with some imaginative guided dance to reinforce freedom and joy of movement. Dienner noted that the students with developmental disabilities taking private lessons have enjoyed their accomplishments. “The students ... here have just blossomed,” she said. “We thought, ‘Let’s start a program where they can learn to dance at a (comfortable) pace, with a goal of transitioning students into another class as their capabilities improve.’” Dienner noted that a limited number of scholarships are available to cover half of the cost of a class. Classes began the week of Aug. 27, but it is not too late to register. Readers who would like to sign up or apply for a scholarship may visit www.cavodacademy.com. SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE Community Courier

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) recently bestowed Criminal Justice System for the 21st Century Best Practices Awards. The 2018 Best Practices Award in the large county jail category was presented to Lancaster County Prison for their PrisonStat Program, an active leadership strategy to achieve transparency, accountability, and efficiency at the prison, drive real measurable results, and help turnaround within the organization. First initiated in 2016, PrisonStat is modeled on the Performance Stat idea which is an active leadership model that uses an ongoing series of regular meetings during which the chief executive and/or leadership team uses current data to analyze aspects of an organization’s performance. This continuing analysis of predetermined metrics produces results by pushing the organization toward performance targets. It also provides leaders with the ability to articulate to the organization and public what improved results need to be demonstrated. Each department head is assigned a metric pertaining to their job description, and are responsible for oversight of a specific area. They are held accountable during the public meeting scheduled every two months and their performance is transparent for the public to see whether positive or negative. An Honorable Mention in the large jail category was awarded to Berks County Prison for their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification. With their rising mental health population, they recognized a need to improve staff training and education about signs and symptoms of mental illness, for all staff, especially custody supervisors and correctional offi-

cers. Staff was trained through Mental Health First Aid USA, an eight-hour course that teaches a five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer and self-help care. This approach is demonstrating results throughout the prison and better outcomes for both inmates and staff. The 2018 recipient of the Juvenile Alternatives Program Award is Lancaster County for their P.U.L.S.E. Evening Treatment Center. Lancaster County’s Juvenile Court, the Office of Juvenile Probation, and the Children and Youth Agency were experiencing a reduced accessibility to specialized programs, as well as the closure of some residential facilities. This resulted in their need to seek out opportunities to keep low to moderate risk juveniles within close proximity to home and community resources which could parallel the successful outcomes of long-term placements. The Youth Intervention Center initially developed the P.U.L.S.E. Weekend Program with the objective of providing short-term, evidence-based treatment with the goal of diverting juveniles away from the need for long-term placements. The participant’s goals, program length, and groups will be determined based on recommendations from the juvenile probation officer or children and youth caseworker, consultation with the parents/guardians, and results of various assessments. The youths participate in evidence-based programs, as well as psycho-educational groups. The results are demonstrated in improved outcomes for juveniles and their families. The Partner Award recipient is Carolyn
