Oxford United Methodist Church To Present Harvest Fair By Marcella Peyre-Ferry Oxford United Methodist Church (OUMC) will hold its 16th annual Harvest Fair on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. The event will include an array of artists and craftspeople displaying and selling their work, as well as live entertainment on the outdoor stage and plenty of food. Hours for the Harvest Fair are somewhat shorter than in previous years, but that change just happens to fit in well with other activities going on in Oxford that day, including an afternoon of zombie-themed events at the Oxford Public Library’s “Walking Dead Day” and the downtown car show, which was postponed from its usual September date due to bad weather. “I may be a little biased, but I can’t imagine a better way to spend a few hours with family in southern Chester
County,” said the Rev. Mark Terry, OUMC pastor. “And, with the car show rescheduled for later the same day, folks can enjoy some time with us before they walk up to the show.” Visitors will be happy to see many of their favorite crafters from previous years, along with some new ones as well. Items for sale will include quilts, metal crafts, tote bags made from repurposed material, fused and blown glass, handmade purses, wood crafts, local honey, ice cream, birdhouses, alpaca wool products, handcrafted jewelry and handmade cards, along with embroidered towels, bibs and bags. There will be a special booth with crafts made and donated by church members. The featured craft this year
will be table decorations made with artificial flowers in glass vases filled with clear acrylic material to give the appearance of water. See Harvest Fair pg 10

As of July, Lincoln Larsen is the new assistant pastor at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Oxford. The 30-year-old Larsen is originally from the Seattle area, but he and his wife, Emma, moved close to Philadelphia three years ago while he attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside. They relocated to the Oxford area when he was accepted to the position at Bethany. “This is my first full-time ministry opportunity,” Larsen said. In 2012, Larsen had been living in Grove City, near Pittsburgh, and working in construction until a shoulder injury kept him out of work for eight weeks. It was during that See Assistant Pastor pg 3

This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables will be set up to allow guests to set down their food between tasting stations. trust with you.” When he has the opportunity to preach, Larsen’s goal is to help people see Jesus more clearly and worship Him. “Preaching isn’t only for the mind. Of course your mind should be informed (and) people should be learning new things about the Bible, but ultimately that should drive you to give Him the praise and the glory. I want people to have a real sense of who Jesus is,” Larsen said. “My goal is that people would come to know Christ either for the first time or more and more.” Outside his pastoral duties, Larsen enjoys hiking, camping, playing guitar, reading and swing dancing. He and Emma are expecting their first child this fall. “She’s my No. 1 cheerleader. I don’t think I would be here right now if she were not behind it totally,” he added. person. The older I get, the less easy it is for me to relate to younger families. Culturally and generationally, it’s better to have someone who’s in tune with them.” Larsen was drawn to Bethany by the qualities of the church. “I listened to quite a few of Pastor Mark’s sermons before I applied. I wanted to go to a church that was well established, that had elders and deacons. In the interview process I realized there is a good alignment of core values and focusing on the Gospel,” he said. “Everyone was very welcoming and friendly, and it just seemed like a good place to be.” Larsen’s duties at Bethany include working with the youth group and young families, as well as filling in preaching when needed. “Part of my job at this point is to get to know people. To effectively minister, you have got to know people,” he said. “I definitely enjoy the one-on-one interactions. I think that’s got to be the foundation for what you do. No one is going to listen to you from behind the pulpit if they have no relationship of

Assistant Pastor from pg 1 time that he started seminary classes part time at Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. “A lot of different things were encouraging me in that direction,” Larsen recalled. At his wedding in 2014, he met a couple who were friends of his new wife’s family. A few weeks later, after just that brief meeting, they offered to pay for his tuition so he could attend seminary full time. “They felt like God called them to do that. That was a huge confirmation to me,” he said. “God put that on my lap in a way to prove, ‘You hadn’t even asked for this, but this is how richly I’m providing for you.’” There were a number of applicants for the position at Bethany. A search committee narrowed it down to three candidates to meet in person. “Right away I could tell Lincoln and I were seeing eye to eye. He’s a sharp young guy, and he’s doing this because he’s called to it,” said Bethany pastor Mark Mathews. “It’s important to have a young

Kaitlin Bell of Nottingham was presented with the Spirit of 4-H Award, which is given annually to one Chester County 4-H member. She received the award during the Chester County 4-H Fair held this past summer at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. Kaitlin is a member of the Chester County Golden Fleece 4-H Club, the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Chester County 4-H Beef Club. For the honor, she received a plaque. Her name was also engraved on a larger plaque on display at the Romano Center. Originally a club award, the Spirit of 4-H Award was started in
1998 by the former Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club that met in northern Chester County. The award went to a member of the club who demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community. In 2007, the club, with support from the 4-H Advisory Committee, made it a county-wide award that is presented to one Chester County 4-H member at the annual 4-H Fair. 4-H club leaders are asked to nominate one member from each club for the award. Nominees must display the qualities listed, have been in 4-H for at least one project year and have participated in meetings and club activities. Once nominated, the members are asked to complete an application to be reviewed by the 4-H Advisory Committee, which selects the nominee deemed most deserving to win the award. “The application has questions, such as what they have done in 4-H and how 4-H has affected them, noted Toni Stuetz, Extension 4-H educator. In her application, Kaitlin credited 4-H as having a major impact on her life, including teaching her responsibility for “a living animal and its well-being. “I am responsible for managing how much money I spend and how I balance my income and expenses, she wrote. According to Betsy MacCauley, one of Kaitlin’s 4-H club leaders, Kaitlin exemplifies the spirit of 4-H. “She happily shares her knowledge and experience with others at club, county and public events, MacCauley stated. “She is always willing to lend a hand and provide encouragement. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her natural ability at leadership makes her a role model for all 4-H participants. Three additional 4-H members were honored, including Madison Fisher of Pottstown, Suzanna Angstadt of Coatesville and Summer Lauren of West Chester. They were presented with certificates of achievement. Each was nominated by her club leader and was a finalist in the award process. Madison is a member of the Northern Chester County 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Madison credits 4-H with providing her skills she will be able to use the

According to her leader, Betsy Ullrich, “Madison is an enthusiastic 4-H member and encourages others to participate in club and county activities. Suzanna is a member of the Windy Hollow 4-H Club in Coatesville and is an active teenage leader with the Pony Partners equine outreach programs. She credits 4-H with allowing her to lead a group and helping her to feel comfortable working with younger and older youths and to feel more confident in speaking to large groups. Summer is a member of Lead Changers 4-H Horse Club. Summer believes 4-H has helped her feel more comfortable with both humans and animals and helped her learn time management
skills. Last year, Summer volunteered more than 100 hours helping at the Delaware Valley SPCA. She is working to establish a new 4-H club based on her community service experiences. Summer was recognized with the President’s Gold Service Award for her volunteer service. Youths ages 8 to 18 may join 4-H, which is the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. For more information, readers may call 610-696-3500. children in prayer. Additional members of the community prayed for schools, teachers and other staff members, buildings, and administrators. Some teachers, staff members, and administrators invited participants to pray for them, their classrooms, and the upcoming school year. Other
staff members and teachers asked for prayers for more personal joys and concerns, such as illnesses, family members, grief and travel. The Prayer Walk was originally organized by Marge Pickle more than a decade ago. Her commitment to praying for the local schools inspired the Avon Grove
Ministerium to continue the event. This year’s walk was organized by Pastor Monica, lead pastor of West Grove United Methodist Church. The Avon Grove Ministerium invites community members to continue to pray for the local schools, students, teachers, and staff members throughout the year.

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks will share his professional experience as an athlete and a man of faith on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Parkesburg Point, 700 Main St., Parkesburg. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Hicks will discuss what made the recent football champions a unique team and how team members’ faith carried them to the franchise’s first victory in the National Football League’s championship game. The Point’s mission is to empower youths and their families to live victoriously by offering a safe, engaging, supervised, Christian environment where youths are surrounded by positive role models and may socialize with peers during the afterschool hours of 4 to 8 p.m. when they may otherwise be home alone and unsupervised. Each evening, students receive a hot meal and have access to a variety of academic, enrichment, health and wellness, music, life skills, career readiness and recreational programs. The Point partners with more than 500 volunteers, 30 local churches, community leaders, businesses, police departments, and school districts, as well as the judicial
system, to collaboratively address the needs of the community’s most vulnerable youths. The Point currently serves 467 individual students ages 8 to 18, with an average of 50 to 80 students attending daily and 250 attendees over the course of a week. Most of the students come from the Octorara School District, but close to 20 percent of students now travel from the Coatesville Area School District.

A silent auction of at least 10 items will be held at the gala. Among the silent auction items will be themed gift baskets, such as a Christmas basket, a chocolate basket, a book basket, and a man cave basket. “There will be a basket called ‘Memories of the Gala,’ which will include samples of the foods (from the gala menu),” said O’Sullivan. One local resident has donated a fullsize quilt for the silent auction. The quilt is cream colored with purple and lavender squares, embroidered flowers, and fringe trim. O’Sullivan noted that it is washable. The items to be
auctioned will be displayed in the library by the end of October. O’Sullivan said that the 2017 tasting attracted about 125 attendees. This year, organizers hope to welcome 150 guests and raise $5,000 for the library’s general budget, which includes materials and utilities. Funds raised by the upcoming event will benefit both the PVPL and the Salisbury Township Branch Library, located in Gap. Both per-person and per-couple tickets are available for the event. Sun Protection Tips Provided offers several recommendations for keeping children sun-safe during the school year. UV rays are most intense from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and this is when students are usually outside for recess, physical education class, and after-school sports. Parents should check with the school to see if there are adequate places for students to seek shade during outdoor activities. Shade can be provided by gazebos and roof structures, awnings, shade sails, and natural shade, such as thickly leaved trees. Clothing is the single most effective form of sun protection for the body, children should be sent to school in densely woven and bright- or dark-colored fabrics, which offer the best defense. The more skin that is covered, the
better, so long sleeves and long pants should be chosen whenever possible. Children should be sent to school with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect their face, neck, and eyes. If a child will not wear a wide-brimmed hat, a baseball cap is better than nothing. Sunscreen should be part of the morning routine. At least 30 minutes before children go outside, parents should apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher to their skin. Older children should learn to apply sunscreen themselves and make it a routine habit. To remain effective, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. At a minimum, remind
children to reapply sunscreen before after school sports and outdoor activities. One ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) should be applied to the entire body. Parents should remind children to cover those easy to miss spots, such as the back of ears and neck, as well as the tops of the feet and hands. There is a chance a school does not allow students to use sunscreen or wear a hat outdoors during the school day without written permission from a physician. If that is the case, The Skin Cancer Foundation has created a sun protection permission form that parents and doctors can sign, allowing students to bring these items to school to apply and use as needed. The form is available at www.skincancer.org/ schoolnote.

Due to the time of year, sun protection may slip down the list of health and wellness priorities. But harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays are present year-round, and one study notes that children sustain a significant amount of sun exposure at school. About 23 percent of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18, and this exposure can have far-reaching effects. Sun damage is cumulative, so sun exposure during childhood can contribute to skin cancer risk later in life. The best way to mitigate that risk is to educate young children on effective sun protection, instilling healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Children should understand that summer vacation is not the only time they are exposed to the sun’s rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation

The Magic Of Model Railroading Frank Stellar’s garden railway was a dream deferred for many years as other ventures - like a successful teaching and coaching career at Donegal High School and raising a family - took priority. Upon retiring, he set out to design and install an expansive backyard layout at his Manheim home. Instead of starting small and gradually adding on, he opted to go big from the start. “At my age, I knew what I wanted to do and knew that it’d be a oneand-done thing,” said Stellar. The approximately 30-by-70yard layout features a doubletrack railway with G-scale trains and a multitude of buildings nestled among eye-catching gardens. For the buildings - which include a train station, a power plant, a coal mine, a church, houses, barns, and more - Stellar worked from kits or modified birdhouses that fit his vision. Antique vehicles dot the roadways, and last summer Stellar added a small pond and babbling waterfall. Battery-powered trains travel along tracks that swirl throughout the yard at several levels of elevation, disappearing from time to time under tunnels or the deck before reappearing to cross bridges and trestles all hand-built by Stellar. “It’s all one continuous loop, and I can run three trains at a time,” Stellar noted. The tracks also lead through a small doorway into the garage, where they can loop around Stellar’s workshop before returning outdoors. Just how many hours go into maintenance and upkeep for the layout and garden is tough to say, but the entire project is a labor of love for Stellar. Railroading is in his blood and has been a part of his life since he

Stellar’s grandfather worked as a tower operator at the Reading Railroad, where several of his uncles established careers as well. When Stellar reached the ripe old age of 2, his father presented him with a Lionel train set that was his first foray into what has become a lifelong model railroading hobby. “It was something that was instilled in me, and I just had this ambition,” said Stellar. Stellar’s garden railway will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 12th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 7. The self-guided, family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge. Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers
of Kissel Hill garden center stores and in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s museum store, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours or by using a printable ticket request available at www.rrmuseumpa.org. Tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania houses 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an education center, a library and archives, exhibits, and a museum store. To learn more, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-687-8628. This will be Stellar’s sixth year participating in the Garden Railways Tour. Aside from supporting the mission of the museum, he enjoys having the opportunity to watch the faces of visitors as they step into his backyard and their eyes light up. “I think it’s just the overall effect, because they aren’t expecting to turn around the corner and see all of this,” said Stellar.

Organization Aids Homeless In Two Counties By Ann Mead Ash
“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000-square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help
children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated. Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter. Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a week. We give people the gift of time.” Readers who would like to know more about Good Samaritan Services may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

Local Library Slates Events Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, will participate in this year’s Jumpstart Read for the Record on Thursday, Oct. 25. This year’s book selection, “Maybe Something Beautiful” written by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael López, celebrates the magic that can happen when a community comes together to create something beautiful and bring about change.
