Pumpkin Olympics To Benefit Local Organizations By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
After Halloween, the demand for pumpkins drops, but the leftovers will be put to good use at the 19th annual Pumpkin Olympics, set for Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Visitors may take part in pumpkin games of all kinds, including competitions such as pumpkin throwing, a pumpkin carry and pumpkin races. “There’s always a new game or two,” organizer Rhonda Stoltzfus said. The new game this year will allow visitors to attempt to guide a small pumpkin through a maze board
using ropes and a sling. Some people take pumpkin sports very seriously, including the Smokin Llamas and Chucksters pumpkin chucking teams. They will be using humanpowered machines to throw pumpkins for long distances. In addition to their pumpkin chucking demonstration, there will be a time to meet and greet the teams and find out more about their throwing devices. “ We’re coming to throw pumpkins,” Smokin Llamas member Tom Bush said. “We want to try out a few adjustments while we’re here, and it draws a crowd to do the rest of the stuff.” See Pumpkin Olympics pg 3
The Pumpkin Olympics will take place on Nov. 10 at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Those who will participate or volunteer at the event include (front, from left) Jansen Schempp and Carson Schempp from Parkesburg Baptist Church youth group; Heidi Stoltzfus of Lancaster Mennonite field hockey; Maria Stoltzfus of Hans Herr FFA; (second row) Hayley Koller and Sarah Watson from the Parkesburg Baptist Church youth group; farm owners Rhonda and Jeff Stoltzfus; (back) Dwayne Walton, executive director, Parkesburg Point; Andrea Reever, Jody Bush and Tom Bush of the Smokin Llamas; and Mike Ross from the Octorara Softball Association.

On Oct. 12, children from around the Pequea Valley School District gathered at the Kinzer Fire Company, 3521 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, for a time of fire safety education. The fire company has been holding the day

Fire Safety from pg 1 75 students from the Conestoga Valley Homeschoolers group visited the fire station during the morning. In the afternoon, students from four of the seven Plain community schools located within the fire company’s territory visited. The fire company expects students from the other three Plain community schools to attend the 2019 event. Brubaker said that the fire education training begins with a classroom video that discusses “stop, drop, and roll,” “stay low and go,” and the need for two exits in a building. The children learn about the importance of smoke detectors. They also learn about dialing 911 and the need to know their own addresses. Outside in the fire station parking lot, Brubaker described five different stations where children could learn about safety and experience some of the activities associated with firefighting. “There is a fun station where they get to handle the hose line,” said Brubaker. “We have a station where the firefighters gear up and explain what a firefighter does, and we have a smoke trailer that simulates a fire they can crawl through.” In addition, Gordonville Ambulance Service was on-site to discuss the services it provides, and the Paradise Fire Company brought along boats for use in water rescues. “(The Paradise Fire Company) had 34 water rescues they were dispatched for last month,” said Brubaker. Readers who would like to learn more about the Kinzer Fire Company may visit www.kinzerfire.com.

the community and have fun,” said volunteer Hayley Koller from the Parkesburg Baptist Church youth group. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a giant pumpkin drop where two 400-pound pumpkins will be dropped on a car, followed by the Great Pumpkin Avalanche that will feature pumpkins rolling down a hill. The day will end with a smash fest, where any unbroken pumpkins will be smashed open. The pumpkin destruction is a part of the ultimate recycling of the pumpkins, making them easy for the farm’s cattle to eat. “It was a rough growing year. We were very dry through July, then very wet after that, so the pumpkins got a late start,” Stoltzfus said. “Our quantity is down, so if there’s any readers that have pumpkins to donate for our avalanche, give us a call.” For more information or to donate pumpkins, readers may call 610-593-5656. Glen Run Valley View Farm is located at 280 Lenover Road, Atglen. Stoltzfus cautioned that muddy conditions may necessitate new parking arrangements, but there will be signs posted. to play the parts. Challenges inherent in the production include making it appear that cast members are hit by water balloons and finding a digestible substance that would stand in for chicken hearts, which the girls are supposed to swallow whole as part of a running joke in the show. “We decided on (gelatin) that will go down easy when they swallow it whole (because) we can make it realistic,” said Pencheff, who explained that the girls swallow the chicken hearts based on a superstition that they would marry the next person they shook hands with. “Of course, there are complications involving who they will shake hands with next … and they may not want to shake hands, and how will they get out of it?” explained Pencheff, who added that the girls also get into
trouble by putting a stuffed dummy on the trolley tracks. Anastasi said that audience members should expect lots of laughs from the production. Strenck thoughtfully noted that audiences who attend will be reminded that no family is ever perfect. Readers who would like to see the show may purchase tickets at the door each night. Tickets will be discounted for students. Pictured on front:

Carolyn Pencheff, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall production of “Meet Me in St. Louis,” noted that the play has presented her and the cast with some interesting challenges. “We have a great cast, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Pencheff, who then noted that one cast member has a broken leg, and another has a badly sprained ankle. Fortunately, both should be healed by showtime. “In early blocking rehearsals, we had a scooter (for the boy with the broken leg) on stage, so that was interesting,” noted Pencheff. PVHS will stage “Meet Me in St. Louis” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. “Meet Me in St. Louis” is the story about the members of the Smith family, who are excited about attending the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. However, Mr. Smith, played by Ian Hershey, reveals that he is being given a higher-paying job in New York and the family members will have to leave their St. Louis home, including
all their friends and loved ones, and miss out on the fair. Out of desperation, the four daughters - Rose, played by Sierra Anastasi; Esther, played by Faith Strenck; Agnes, played by Emily Eby; and Tootie, played by Bre Fellenbaum - take action to try to make their father decide to keep the family in St. Louis. What starts as a plan soon becomes a series of mishaps that threaten not only their hopes of staying in St. Louis but also Mr. Smith’s career and Rose’s love life. The rest of the cast includes Marina Martin as Mrs. Smith, Chad Hughes as Lon, Colton Mann as Grandpa, Sarah Houck as Katie, Julia Shaubach as Mrs. Waughop, Abby Stoltzfus as Ida Boothby, Noah Stoltzfus as John Shepard, Jamison Castor as Fred Gregory, Trishelle Hoope as Lucille Pentard, Jazae Itegi as Mr. Dodge, and Jesse Fuir as Mr. Duffy. Christie Groff serves as student director, and she will handle the stage manager’s tasks during the show. Pencheff said she chose the show over others because of its classic and familiar tale. “It transcends time,” said Pencheff. “It’s a family show,” she added, noting that she felt her cast of 16 had the talent

ered during the tutoring training workshop. “The program covers teaching routines, teaching adult basic education, ESL, lesson planning, using textbooks and teaching strategies,” she explained, noting that there is also a section to help tutors prepare students to receive their GED. “We also have a library of materials for the tutors to use with the students that includes various publications for different levels.” Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. Every effort is made to match tutors with students based on their preferences and geographical locations. In addition to studying to receive their high school equivalency diploma, some students are studying to become United States citizens, while others have goals of improving their reading, writing and spelling. Some need help with everyday experiences in the community. “Sometimes stu-
who are currently teaching and want to do this on the side,” she noted. “There are people who are semi-retired with part-time jobs and want to do something (extra). We have a college student from West Chester University who is tutoring a student from Africa. So, it’s a variety. “ For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor, readers may contact Rikess at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-280-2618. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training with the Pennsylvania Department of Education,” Rikess pointed out. “(Volunteers) can take (the course) within a month of starting tutoring. There are eight modules; each takes about a half hour, and they can do that on their own time at home.” Rikess said that the online training deals with many of the same topics that were cov-
dents and tutors will go different places,” Rikess said. “They might go to restaurant to learn to order from a menu or to grocery store to learn about different types of food. (They review) things we take for granted like filling out an application for a job. Some students can speak English but have a hard time writing, so they want to learn that specific skill.” Rikess said that patience is the most important quality for tutors, who are of various ages and come from different backgrounds. “Some of our tutors are teachers

It’s an honor to do it.” Military veterans will be admitted to the breakfast free of charge. Fees have been set for admission for all other individuals and for takeouts. Swisher noted that the special division supports the fire company through fundraising. The group meets at the fire hall on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to attend. The proceeds from the breakfast will be used for “whatever (we) need and the upkeep of the kitchen,” Swisher said. “It all goes back into the fire company.” There will be a wide variety of food served buffet-style at the meal, including sausage, bacon, ham, scrapple, chipped beef gravy, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, pancakes, pastries, juice, and coffee. Volunteers will begin cooking at 4 a.m. in order to have everything ready in time for hungry diners. Fire company member Debbie Hoover reported that more than 300 people attended last year’s breakfast. Additionally, the fire company will host a craft show on
