Third Interactive Nativity Planned At The Point “Miracle Of Jesus” To Feature New Stop By Ann Mead Ash
“Our prayer is that as families interact with the citizens of Bethlehem and hear how their lives have been changed by meeting Jesus … they will want to know more about how their own lives can be changed by Jesus,” said Heather Ensslen, volunteer coordinator for “The Miracle of Jesus.” This year, “The Miracle of Jesus: A Christmas Event for Families” will be held at The Point, 700 Main St., Parkesburg, on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 2, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The holiday event, which is in its third year, is organized by Calvary Monument Bible Church in Paradise. The annual live Nativity allows guests to step back in time to biblical
Bethlehem, where the residents and shopkeepers they meet are recalling the night that Jesus was born. Since it has been several years since that special night - and Jesus has gone on to do amazing things, such as bringing a child back to life, feeding thousands with just a few loaves of bread and some fishes, and overcoming His own death - the citizens of Bethlehem have not been able to stop talking about Jesus. Ensslen explained that for 2018, visitors will stop at the magi’s house, where they will meet one of the magi who visited Jesus and learn how to make a cardboard telescope. Guests will also stop at a bakery, where they can knead bread dough and experience the taste of bread dipped in olive oil. Another stop will be the fisherman’s pier, where attendees may try their hand at catching a wooden fish and then have the opportunity to paint their catch. At the See Live Nativity pg 10
Preparing for their roles in the 2018 “Miracle of Jesus,” to be held at The Point in Parkesburg in early December, are (from left) Destiny Davis, Dave Fisher, and Dolly Fisher. The annual interactive live Nativity is sponsored by Calvary Monument Bible Church in Paradise.

from the West Chester University Center for Community Solutions volunteer and designed our logo,” Brion said. “The Friars’ Society out of West Chester University are young men who come and help us move furniture and deliver donations.” For those in need of furniture, a case manager, social worker or sponsor must complete a form on their behalf at www.communitywarehouseproject.com. The client and the case manager then come to pick out the furniture at the warehouse. Items needed by CWP include living room furniture, tables, lamps, nightstands, bunk beds and linens, as well as housewares, such as dishes, plates, silverware, pots and pans. Donations must be clean and in good condition. Items that CWP will not accept include clothing, televisions and large appliances. Brion said that the organization is particularly in need of single beds with bed
frames. “We never have enough single beds,” she said. “I know there are a lot of people out there who would be willing to buy a bed for people.” Those who have furniture to donate are asked to contact the agency in advance. “There is a place on the website for people who want to donate furniture,” explained Brion. “You include a picture so that way we know what we are getting.” Approved furniture can be dropped off on the third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The next scheduled furniture drop-off event will be on Nov. 17. Brion encourages real estate agents to let homeowners who are moving know about the option of donating unwanted furniture to CWP. “Realtors have reached out to their clients who are downsizing,” she explained. “People take what they need to move onto the next place, and we will get the rest of the furniture. It gives them a place to put it, and all (donations) are put to good use.” Brion said that as the effort grows, so does the need for volunteers. “I can always use help in the warehouse straightening, rearranging things and labeling things,” she noted. She would also love to have someone donate or loan a delivery truck to the organization. “Someone with a box truck who is willing to drive the truck once a month would be nice, or if we had a truck available, I could find a volunteer to drive the truck,” she said. “Right now, we have to rent a truck, but the Friars do the heavy lifting. It’s a real challenge for us to keep up with deliveries.” For more information about CWP, readers may call 484-473-4360, visit www.com munitywarehouseproject.com or search for “Community Warehouse Project of Chester County” on Facebook.
“They came for beds, sofas, coffee tables and dressers. I knew the need was tremendous, but I wasn’t sure how much we would be able to accomplish with all volunteers, but it’s working.” Brion explained that individuals and families that are seeking items are referred to the agency by Chester County social service organizations such as the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County; Children, Youth and Families; and Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children. CWP maintains a large warehouse in the Downingtown area in a space that is provided free of charge by the E. Kahn Development Corporation. CWP works in partnership with the Rotary Club of West Chester. West Chester University students are also involved in the program. “Students
Frank Stearns (left) and Joe Morrissey are just two of the volunteers who help move furniture and mattresses for the Community Warehouse Project of Chester County. The organization is seeking additional volunteers and furniture donations.

MORGANTOWN GUN SHOW Morgantown Center 6180 Morgantown Rd., Morgantown Nov. 17 & 18, 2018
In May, when Downing Jacobs, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Paradise, was assigned to schedule the club program, he knew right away that he would ask his friend Travis Wetzel, a musician, to perform his Civil War show for the group. “I heard it at the Reading Historical Society last year,â€? said Jacobs, who plays guitar with Wetzel. “I knew all the songs, and ‌ I knew he would impress everybody.â€? What Jacobs did not anticipate was how soon after the presentation the other club members would suggest that they enlist Wetzel’s talents for a benefit concert under the group’s sponsorship. Jacobs and Wetzel quickly agreed, and the Rotary Club of Paradise will present the Travis Wetzel and Friends Bluegrass Experience on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at Conestoga Valley’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster. Wetzel, who is originally from Dauphin County, is a musician, songwriter, and vocalist who is popular in the greater Philadelphia and central Pennsylvania area, where he has played at the Kutztown, Reading, and Bethlehem folk festivals. Known for playing genres including jazz, swing, Celtic, Native American, coun-
try, and classical, Wetzel has been featured as lead fiddler/violinist on a number of recording projects ranging from country to rock. He performed at the Chet Atkins Convention, and he was selected for a lead part in the Johnny Cash musical “Ring of Fire at the Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville, Tenn. “(Wetzel tours) with Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys of the Grand Ole Opry, noted Jacobs. “He has been nominated several times for inspirational country musician awards. Wetzel has also toured in Germany. He has worked with a number of charitable organizations, and most recently he has been involved with WEGave, an organization that helps veterans to take part in music therapy activities. For the Rotary concert, Jacobs said that Wetzel will give his Bluegrass Experience concert, which will include songs in the bluegrass and gospel styles, along with some Civil War-era songs. In addition to Jacobs on guitar, others performing with Wetzel will include native Pennsylvanians Bob Sutor on banjo and Ron Greenstein on string bass. For this year, the concert will replace the Rotary Club’s Amish Classic bike ride. The ride was held in partnership with See Wetzel pg 4

at the dedication ceremony and on a plaque in the reading room. A spot for the reading room was created by removing outdated books and taking out some of the shelves. “The library is pretty much all one space. Unfortunately, there’s not any real quiet spaces in this room. Sometimes in the back of the library, you can hear people talking in the front, even though we try to keep our voices down, Schwabenbauer said. “In the back of the library, there’s a window seat and we have one or two armchairs, but we didn’t have a place for people to sit comfortably. The result of remedying those issues is a comfortable room for library patrons. “We wanted something cozy and homey looking, Schwabenbauer said. “It’s not for tutoring or meetings or anything like that. It’s a quiet space. It’s supposed to be like an oasis. Avon Grove Library is located at 117 Rosehill Ave., West Grove. Reading Room from pg 1 The room was opened with a dedication ceremony on Sept. 25. It is dedicated to the memory of Kim L. Ringler, a former director of the Avon Grove Library. Ringler managed the library for 22 years, retiring in 2014. She passed away in 2016, at which time several of her friends made donations to the library in her memory. That funding made the construction of the new reading room possible. “She was quite a beloved figure, especially among the staff. We thought we really should use that money for something special, and a staff member suggested a reading room, library director Lori A. Schwabenbauer said. “We’re very happy to be able to preserve her legacy here in the building she worked so hard to help build and in the library she did so much to advance. Memorial donations were supplemented by donations from Ringler’s family, the Avon Grove Rotary Club and the Friends of the Avon Grove Library. Thanksgiving Service from pg 1 Each year, before the hectic pressures of the holiday season get underway, members of the Oxford Area Ministerium ask the community to join in thankful fellowship at their annual Thanksgiving service. This year, the service will be held at Mount Vernon Christian Church, 1 Lighthouse Drive, Kirkwood, on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. “The Thanksgiving service is a great, stress-free way to begin the Thanksgiving week,” said the Rev. Mark Terry, president of the Oxford Area Ministerium and pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church. “Travel worries, cleaning worries, cooking worries - save those all for another day. Come and give thanks for all that God has done for you. You will probably celebrate the holiday on Thursday with family; come celebrate on Sunday evening with your friends and neighbors.” The annual gathering will feature musical selections from the choirs and praise bands from a number of local churches, along with songs from a combined choir. Lincoln Larsen, the newly installed assistant pastor at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Oxford, will deliver the message. After the service, there will be time for fellowship along with pie and ice cream. “The service is just the community coming together - all the different churches and organizations that want to worship together,” Lighthouse Youth Center (LYC) director Buzz Tyson said. “It’s a nice gathering for us to fellowship with the community.” Each year, the service moves to a dif-

and, over time, cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If dirt and debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteriors. Washing and waxing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the likelihood of rust and other corrosion. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic, and if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles. Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed. Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages.

Terry noted that he enjoys the opportunity to worship with friends from other churches and to visit another church. “It is always a lot of fun to see friends that I don’t get to see on a Sunday morning, and to hear a sampling of the musical talent that we have in so many of our churches,” he said. Those who attend are asked to bring a nonperishable food item. These donations, along with funds from the offering, will go toward organizations helping to alleviate food needs in the area, including the LYC. “While many remember their less-fortunate neighbors this time of year, the need is still great,” said Terry. “The food we collect and funds we receive in the offering will be very helpful to these organizations this time of the year.” Some items particularly needed at the LYC include taco seasoning packets, barbecue sauce, macaroni and cheese, ketchup, ranch dressing and individualsize snacks such as crackers, fruit cup and granola bars. In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in garages. In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms, and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear. But many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the elements, while others look for ways to protect their cars and trucks as much as possible. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever Mother Nature has in store for them. Parking a car in the sun can leave the vehicle vulnerable to damage such as faded exterior paint. Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect upholstery and dashboards inside the car from suninduced fading, while also limiting the damage sun can cause to exterior paint. Faded paint may hurt the resale value of a vehicle, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps to minimize damage that is inevitable regardless of where drivers park their cars. Dirt and debris litter roadways,

Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) will hold a silent auction fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in the St. Peter Celebration Center, 2835 Manor Ave., West Brandywine. This year’s event is being held at a new location, and it will offer online bidding for the first time. The auction will also incorporate a Monte Carlo Night, where attendees may play games to earn tickets that will enter them into a grand prize drawing. There will also be a catered buffet dinner. “The auction is normally every November, (but) we made the decision to take a year off (last year) and find some things that would be new and different and revitalize the auction,” explained Allison Garrity, who is co-chairing the event with Mary Brady. “That’s when we decided on mobile bidding and bringing in Monte Carlo Night, having it catered and moving it to St. Peter’s.” Garrity reported that planning for this year’s event began in August 2017. “When we started to work on the auction, we attended some auctions in the area and all of them had mobile bidding,” she noted. After registering to attend, ticketholders will be emailed a personal bidding link. “They can click on the link to start bidding,” she said. “People will be able to view the auction items beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 14. (Those who) see something that they like can start bidding.” She said items on the auction block have been donated by local businesses as well as PJP II families. “Items will range from tickets to sporting events to experiences throughout Chester County, such as canoeing and rock climbing,” said Garrity. Other auction items will be tickets to local attractions, including sites in Philadelphia and Lancaster County, restaurant gift cards and sports memorabilia, including an autographed Carson Wentz jersey. Also up for bids will be gift baskets featuring handmade gifts by PJP II students from prekindergarten to eighth grade. “In fourth grade they are doing a Family Fun Night basket that
includes a blanket with the (students’) pictures and a gift certificate for a pizza and (a movie),” said Garrity. “These are things parents will want to bid on.” She noted that the mobile bidding system will allow the bidder to list the maximum amount of money that they are willing to bid on for a certain item. “It will keep bidding for you up until your max, but then you can increase your max if you want,” Garrity said. The silent auction will close at 9 p.m. on Nov. 17. Winners need not be present to win. “The great thing with mobile bidding is that if (you have to leave early), it will give a notification if you have been outbid, and if you want the item bad enough, you can continue to bid,” Garrity stated. spice shop, guests will get to crush their own frankincense and pour it in a bottle to take home with them. “(The spice shop) is a family favorite,” noted Ensslen. At the census taker’s location, guests will learn how to write Jesus’ name in Hebrew, and at the wool trader’s, they will have a chance to try weaving on a loom. Staging a live Nativity that takes visitors back to a marketplace in Bethlehem requires a number of actors and helpers. “We are so thankful for a very large team of faithful volunteers who help to put on ‘The Miracle of Jesus,’” noted Ensslen. “There is a small team (working) year-round … (on) all the details.” During the event, about 150 people help to prepare and run “The Miracle of Jesus,” performing tasks that range from setting up the marketplace booths to helping to park cars, serve refreshments, check in registered families, guide tours of the Nativity, and run the photo booth. According to Ensslen, volunteers are aware of how much their efforts mean to visitors.

“(In 2017 there was) a snowstorm on the first day of ‘The Miracle of Jesus,’” she recalled. “We had 550 people attend the event.” Ensslen added that in the last two years, a total of more than 1,200 people have attended the live Nativity experience. “We have heard from many families how excited they are to include ‘The Miracle of Jesus’ as one of their family’s Christmas traditions,” Ensslen said. Although organizers have made a few changes for the 2018 event, Ensslen noted that the goal remains the same. “We desire that people will walk away from their time at ‘The Miracle of Jesus’ knowing that Jesus is with them,” said Ensslen. “All the experiences and activities are designed to remind us that Jesus is with us.” All areas of the event are handicapped-accessible. Ensslen said that to accommodate the large number of visitors expected at the marketplace, organizers are asking those who plan to attend to register for the free event at http://calvarymonument.org/ miracle-of-jesus or by calling the church at 717-442-8161.

Aging can take its toll on drivers, prompting such drivers’ families to feel as if their loved ones’ ability to safely operate motor vehicles has been compromised. However, many seniors can still safely operate motor vehicles, and those who do can take steps to ensure they are as safe as possible behind the wheel. Seniors should avoid driving on days when aches and pains are strong. Aches and pains are common side effects of aging, and seniors know that some days are better than others. Seniors’ ability to control their vehicles may be compromised on days when stiffness, aches, or pains seem particularly strong, so it is best to avoid driving during these times. Fatigue may set in on days when aches and pains require extra effort to perform relatively simple tasks, and drivers of all ages should avoid driving while tired. Few seniors may look forward to their medical checkups, but visits to the doctor can reveal issues that
can help seniors be safer on the road. Seniors are encouraged to schedule routine vision exams so eyeglass prescriptions are always up-to-date. In addition, seniors should discuss hearing screenings with their physicians so they can ensure they can always hear sirens and other motorists while on the road. Great strides have been made in regard to helping people with fading hearing hear better, and seniors would be wise to take advantage of such advancements, which include hearing aids that can be connected to smartphones. Seniors should familiarize themselves with medication side effects. Whether they do so temporarily or permanently, many seniors take medications, and every medication comes with side effects. When filling a new prescription, people should carefully read the dosage and description label to ensure that it is safe to drive while taking the medicine. People should also take note of how they feel when taking a new
PLCB Announces Poster Contest Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) unveiled a new alcohol education campaign called “Know When, Know How.” This campaign teaches parents how to start a conversation with their children about the dangers of underage drinking. In an effort to continue the dialogue about the dangers of underage drinking, the PLCB is encouraging students from across the commonwealth to participate in the 27th annual Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest. The contest is open to all Pennsylvania students in kindergarten through 12th grade, including those who are homeschooled or in private or parochial schools. Students may enter through their schools, clubs, or Scout troops, or they may enter individually. Entries must feature a clear nouse message about underage drinking and may be created using any artistic medium. Students are encouraged to use positive messages and images, such as the benefits of being alcohol-free or alternatives to underage drinking. Each year, approximately 50 posters are selected by a panel of judges for recognition. Each artist who creates a selected poster will be notified of his or her accomplishment and invited to attend a recognition ceremony in Harrisburg
in April 2019, which is Alcohol Awareness Month. Several students will receive $50, and one student from each grade will receive $25. Some of the winning designs may be reproduced in various formats and distributed across Pennsylvania. Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Nov. 16. For additional information about submission dates, guidelines, and prizes, readers may review the contest guidelines and entry form available at www.lcb.pa.gov under Education, then Poster Contest. Questions about the contest may be directed to 717-772-1432 or RA-LBEducation@pa.gov. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board works to educate the public about the dangers of underage and dangerous drinking through a variety of avenues, including the poster contest, a free annual alcohol educational conference, the creation and distribution of a wide range of educational materials, and training and technical assistance for organizations working to address the issues related to irresponsible consumption. The PLCB is again providing a sample lesson plan, which educators are encouraged to use in guiding and teaching students about the dangers of underage drinking.
Group For Seniors Slates Meeting The Strasburg Senior Citizens will hold their next monthly meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. The meeting will feature “Remember Elvis,” a program of musical entertainment by Brad Crum. The Strasburg Senior Cititzens group is now in its 52nd year. The group welcomes
new members from not only Strasburg but also a wide area of Lancaster city and county. The group offers fellowship, musical entertainment, an annual picnic, a Christmas banquet, bus tours, bingo, refreshments, and more. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, readers may call Bill at 717-687-9072.
prescription, avoiding driving if the medication makes them feel fatigued or drowsy or affects their motor functions. If the side effects of a new prescription are making it difficult to safely operate a vehicle, people should discuss potential alternatives with their physician. Driving in inclement weather, during rush hour, and at night may make drivers uncomfortable, regardless of their age. But such conditions can be especially dangerous for aging drivers whose vision and reaction times might be fading. Seniors who avoid driving in harsh conditions and heavy traffic may be more comfortable behind the wheel, thereby reducing their risk of accident or injury. Seniors need not give up their driver’s licenses at the first sign of aging. But adjusting certain behaviors and exercising extra caution can help these men and women stay safe behind the wheel.

Returning for the ninth season in a row, Give-A-Tree cards from the Arbor Day Foundation offer a holiday giving opportunity with conservation benefits that will endure for generations. Again this year, Give-A-Tree cards can be purchased individually and with customized text for a set price. Also, purchasing the Arbor Day Foundation’s coffee helps preserve rain forests in Central and South America. The foundation’s coffee, a part of the Rain Forest Rescue program, is shade-grown under the canopy of Latin American rain forests. The foundation’s Trees in Celebration program allows the giver to honor loved ones while supporting conservation efforts. For each dollar donated, one tree is planted in a high-need forest, and recipients are given a certificate showing them where the trees were planted. In addition, with foundation membership, recipients will be sent 10 free trees, which will be shipped at the right time of year for planting. Membership levels vary and begin with a set minimum contribution. For more information, readers may visit www.arborday.org.

Tips Posted For Driving More Efficiently Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduced fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. Speeding as well as rapid acceleration and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving, and each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. By taking the following steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives. Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways, but using rooftop cargo boxes as traveling storage units for items not needed on a daily basis or simply keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing them to burn more fuel than they would burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. The DOE estimates suggest that large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle is moving at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about 1 percent. Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel. Efficient driving is safe, costeffective and eco-friendly. With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money.
