Project Activate Moves Forward Community Members Join Local Team To Share Ideas By Ann Mead Ash
Several months ago, the Lancaster County Community Foundation chose two areas in which to pilot Project Activate, a program designed to bring about positive change by building a more inclusive community. Southeast Lancaster city and Paradise were selected as pilot areas. The Paradise design team began meeting at the Together Community Center (TCC), home of The Factory Ministries, in September. After completing two days of training and a number of weeks of research, the design team held a Community Idea Gathering at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the event, members of See Project Activate pg 3

Children can also join in the 5K Your Way because they can move at their own pace. Parkesburg VFW holds an annual Veterans Day dinner, but the combined effort drew a larger crowd. “It was worked out through our bar manager, Joanne Carmen, and Nancy (Gauthier),” said Mark Frohm from Parkesburg VFW. “We do a veterans dinner every year, usually during the week. (Joanne and Nancy) came and said Olive Garden was willing to donate, and it just went from there. It’s a great partnership we have with our community.” Gauthier’s niece, Kelly Gomez, who is the general manager of Olive Garden at Rockvale

Square, was enthusiastic about the project. “At Olive Garden we like to give back,” she said. “We like to cook food and feed people who need it.” Gauthier also noted that Dutch-Way Farm Market donated two sheet cakes for the event. One cake was decorated with the flag of the United States and the other featured the message “Thank you, veterans, for your service.” In addition, community members brought cookies, pies and brownies for desserts. There was also a connection with the Octorara Area School District. Third- and fourth-grade students created a poster thanking the veterans and also wrote thank-you notes that were put at each
place setting. “I believe in service, and this is an absolutely wonderful event,” said Lions Club member and district superintendent Michele Orner. “It brings the community together. It’s good service to those who served us.” In attendance were veterans of all ages from all branches of military service. “I think it’s great,” said Rick Groff, who served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. With the organizations working together, the response was bigger than usual for what may well become an annual tradition. “This is the largest (number of attendees) we have had in all the years, so this is marvelous,” Frohm said.

The March of Dimes honored four Chester County women at its 30th annual Salute to Women of Achievement awards presentation on Oct. 16 at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. According to organizers, the March of Dimes presents the awards to women “who have made Chester County a better place to live and work while raising funds for the March of Dimes mission to improve the health of babies.” The honorees were notified in June that they were chosen as individuals recognized by the 2019 Salute to Women of Achievement. The honorees included Maryanne Parsons, president, Partners in Outreach; Sandra L. Knapp, partner, Gawthrop Greenwood, Attorneys at Law; Dr. Karen Pinsky, chief quality officer, Chester County Hospital; and Kathryn Evans, executive director, Church Housing Corporation (CHC). The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Parsons, who founded Partners in Outreach in 2010. The agency is a comprehensive community service organization that provides help to people in need. In 2018, Partners in Outreach served more than 3,000 children in Chester County and surrounding areas. Its literacy campaign has provided more than 25,000 books to schools and organizations in and around Chester County. With the support of more than 300 volunteers, Partners in Outreach has provided more than 1,200 new Easter outfits, 1,000 Easter baskets, 260 winter coats and more than 800 summer camp bags filled with new bathing suits, towels, flip-flops and water bottles. Additionally, 70 struggling readers received one-on-one tutoring in four Chester County elementary schools. Parsons’ goal is to expand the projects within Partners in Outreach to reach more individuals and organizations in need. Knapp was presented with the Business Award. Just two years after joining the West Chester-based law firm Gawthrop

As part of an effort to ensure that every family in the community has a happy holiday season, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine has launched several collection efforts, and the community is invited to participate. For Thanksgiving, the YMCA’s branches will distribute food bags or baskets. Families receiving financial assistance from the YMCA or that have been referred to the Y as needing food assistance and have completed the request form will receive the dinner bags prior to Thanksgiving. The public is invited to donate a meal or pick up a list of food items requested by families. It is not necessary to be a YMCA member to participate. “Each branch will do it a little differently,” explained Leigh Tobin, YMCA marketing specialist. “(At some branches) there is a pumpkin turkey with paper feathers. On the feathers is a list of food items that families are requesting, whether they want stuffing or cranberry sauce, and things they cannot (afford). At the Brandywine YMCA, they are giving out a bag with the list and people can just bring back the (filled) bag.” She said residents may also donate gift cards for supermarkets or gift certificates
for turkeys. In addition, all of the YMCA branches have Angel Trees that list items needed by the local families for the holidays. Again, families receiving financial assistance from the YMCA or that have been referred to the Y as needing assistance will receive gifts donated by the community. As part of Angel Tree program, children and adults complete a wish list to request anything from bikes and games to clothing and supermarket gift cards. Donations are picked up by or sent to families prior to Christmas. Last year, Tobin reported that more than 1,700 children and their families received gifts through the YMCA’s Angel Tree program. “Being here at the Y has been thoroughly life-changing,” shared a previous recipient of a Thanksgiving basket and Angel Tree gifts. “It started with so many little things, like working with me when money was extra tight around the holidays, adding me to the Angel Tree so my son could receive presents at Christmastime, and getting bags of food at Thanksgiving. Receiving that made me feel that people really do get it. I wasn’t alone and, of course, it helped me get through the holidays.” Local branches are participating in
the effort. At the Brandywine YMCA, 295 Hurley Road, Coatesville, Thanksgiving meals and donations will be accepted through Saturday, Nov. 23, and Angel Tree gifts will be accepted through Saturday, Dec. 14. At the Jennersville YMCA, 880 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove, Thanksgiving basket donations will be accepted through Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Angel Tree gifts will be accepted through Thursday, Dec. 19. At the Lionville Community YMCA, 100 Devon Drive, Exton, Angel Tree donations will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 2, in conjunction with Delaware Valley Children’s Charity. At the Octorara YMCA Program Center, 104 Highland Road, Atglen, Christmas gift donations will be accepted from Tuesday, Nov. 26, through Wednesday, Dec. 18. Other branches participating in the effort include the Oscar Lasko YMCA and Childcare Center, 1 E. Chestnut St., West Chester; the Upper Main Line YMCA, 1416 Berwyn-Paoli Road, Berwyn; the West Chester Area YMCA, 605 Airport Road, West Chester; and Kennett Area YMCA, 101 Race St., Kennett Square. The Blue Gate Musical “A Bird-inHand Christmas to Remember” has returned to the Bird-in-Hand Stage. The show tells the story of the Amish owners of a thrift shop, a mother dealing with dementia, a sister with control issues, festive neighbors, and a painting of unknown value. “It’s a story of family and how different people deal with unusual situations,” Blue Gate Musicals composer and director Wally Nason explained. “It touches on issues that people are dealing with and can relate to, but in a way that’s really fun and really tender at the same time.” The Christmas show includes comedy, drama, and musical numbers. the community joined the team to share suggestions about ways to resolve nine issues facing the area. Issues were presented on boards arranged in the TCC gym area. Each board featured an idea prompt, an insight into the problem, a question about how the problem might be solved, and stories from the research that design team members had completed. Issues were divided into groups. One group spotlighted problems with a lack of affordable housing in the area, such as the need to increase awareness among area residents about how to offer affordable housing, trust issues between landlords and potential renters, and financial issues surrounding the development of affordable housing. Another group highlighted issues often faced by seniors, such as transportation, isolation, and communication. A
make their own suggestions. Adam Nagle, who became director of The Factory Ministries over the summer, took time out from his Saturday to attend. “This is awesome,” said Nagle, after having completed the circuit of display boards. “It’s really cool to see the issues that are legitimate barriers to sustainable community and to see them surface with people who live in the community and have (members of the public here) to engage with this.” Nagle noted that Project Activate is welcome in the area because it raises grassrootslevel awareness of issues Paradise residents face. The Paradise Project Activate design group compiled the ideas that were gathered during the event and began the work of moving forward to the next phase. Display boards were dedicated to communication methods, a lack of places to gather, and how community members are marginalized when they are not informed about upcoming events. On a table beside each board, attendees could write their own ideas about how issues might be resolved. Before the design team met with area residents who attended, Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Community Foundation, advised the team to encourage attendees to share their ideas. “We are not looking for confirmation of what we think,” he said. “We want to know what they think.” Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of the Community Foundation, agreed. “The idea is to give the community a chance to be engaged so we can build shared ownership,” Cutler noted. A number of area residents attended the event, where they had opportunities to vote on ideas that had been presented as well as

Turkey Bowl from pg 1
Among the participants in 2018 were members of the Stratton family of Downingtown, including Rebecca and Eric and their children, Aidan, Gabe and Meredith. “I have been doing the Turkey Bowl since 2014; it was my first 5K,” Rebecca reported. “My family started doing it with me in 2015. My daughter does the fun run, and last year my husband joined me and my two (sons) for the first time in the 5K.” Rebecca said the event is ideal for local families. “It is something that I do, and everyone saw how much fun it was, and they joined me,” she said, adding, “We live in Guthriesville, so it’s not too far and our kids take homeschool classes there. “I cook the turkey and we head off,” she added. “It is a tradition, and my kids said they wouldn’t miss it for the world.” As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “The turkey wishes to remain anonymous. He’ll be back this year and wants to keep the mystery of his identity going,” said Gregory. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in
1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses. The sponsors are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, readers may contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@ telhaicamp.org or visit the website.

Tel Hai Camp invites local residents to “burn calories, not your turkey” during the annual Turkey Bowl to be held on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. The event will feature a 5K race and a 1-mile fun run for children. “This is our 28th year for the race, and we are looking forward to another great year,” said Bruce Gregory, camp director. The 5K (3.1-mile) cross-country race will take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. While the course is primarily level, there are a few hills for runners to tackle. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will take place on main grounds of the camp. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge. Registration and race packet pickup will be held from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 28 in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m. All children who complete the fun run will receive a finishers’ medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. To register, readers may visit www.tel haicamp.org/events/turkey-bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Participants may also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the camp, along with the registration fee. Gregory reported that last year there were 429 total participants. The top overall male winner was Ben Zook of Gordonville, with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds. The top overall female winner was Traci Tempone of Lancaster, with a time of 20:52. “We had 38 finishers in the 1-mile fun run and 353 finishers in the 5K race,” he said, noting that the 5K will be professional timed. Gregory and the other race organizers are hoping for good weather this year. “Thanksgiving is a week later this year, so hopefully it won’t be colder than last year,” he noted. “We had frigid weather last year, which we think kept some runners from coming out.” Gregory said that the Thanksgiving event has become a tradition with area families. “Besides the Honey Brook area, we have runners from Downingtown, Gap, Oxford and New Holland,” he stated.

Malvern Bank, National Association collected more than 500 books in support of Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia (CSFP) and GreatPhillySchools’ 2019 Philly K-8 School Fair. The donation was made possible through the support of the bank’s customers, employees and community members. CSFP’s mission is to increase the long-term economic and social success of children from low-income Philadelphia families by providing them financial access to safe, quality, tuitionbased schools for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The organization used the books collected for a Book Nook at the Philly K-8 School Fair, where students had the opportunity to make their own bookmarks and take home one of the collected books for free. “Emotional Gettysburg,” a book featuring original paintings by Karl J. Kuerner and essays by Chester County author Bruce E. Mowday, is being released by Regent Press. Kuerner created 20 original paintings of Gettysburg for the book, which combine today’s peaceful existence with the history of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War. Kuerner was personally tutored by two members of the famous Wyeth family of artists, Andrew and Carolyn Wyeth, the children of artist and book illustrator N.C. Wyeth. Kuerner enlisted Mowday to write essays combining the history of the battle with the painter’s impressions of Gettysburg today
