OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton

The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer

she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

out on life-threatening calls.” Oct. 15 was the official birthday for SCCEMS Medic 94, which was originally established as a joint venture between the former Southern Chester County Medical Center, the St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster and the local volunteer ambulance services in Oxford, West Grove, Avondale and Kennett Square. Until the advent of SCCEMS Medic 94, if advanced life support care was needed, paramedic units had to travel from West Chester or Coatesville to reach patients with their lifesaving care. The distance involved ate up valuable time that is important in treating a patient with a life-threatening condition. Cutting that response time by utilizing units in the region has improved outcomes, according to Hotchkiss. SCCEMS Medic 94 serves more than 75,000 people in a 225-square mile region encompassing 18 municipalities, with a fleet of four licensed paramedic units and 18 employees. Last year, SCCEMS Medic 94 paramedics responded to more than 2,700 dispatch calls, working closely with local ambulance services as well as Jennersville Hospital and other area hospitals. SCCEMS Medic 94 also provides community outreach and wellness programs and is an accredited Pennsylvania Department of Health Continuing Education Training Institute. Hotchkiss said the goals on each call are to stabilize the

patient before leaving the scene, provide the right pre-hospital care and ensure a smooth transition from paramedic care to hospital care. In 2017, SCCEMS Medic 94 was recognized as the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council (PEHSC) EMS Service of the Year. SCCEMS Medic 94 is a nonprofit organization with a communitybased board of directors, composed of community members and representatives from the local ambulance services in Oxford, West Grove and Avondale. As a nonprofit organization, it does bill insurance companies for patient care, but the amount it receives covers an average of just 60 percent of actual costs. To make up the difference, SCCEMS Medic 94 depends on contributions from the municipalities it serves and donations from the public. “The community supports us in two ways - one is a fund drive,” said Hotchkiss, adding that the second way the community supports SCCEMS Medic 94 is by knowing basic first aid practices. “We’re the professionals who come out when you dial 911. What the general public does is as important as what we do - that they know CPR and that they know how to control life-threatening bleeding. These are things the public can do that make a tremendous difference.” For more information about SCCEMS Medic 94, readers may visit www.sccems.org or www.face book.com/Medic94SCCEMS.

Bethany Christian School from pg 1 were added until the school included classes through eighth grade, as it does today. The school moved into its own building in 1996. One of the members of the first graduating class was a granddaughter of Shepherd, who was a physical education teacher in the early years of the school and a volunteer throughout her life. Shepherd passed away in March of this year, but her connection to the school lives on.

“She was such an important part of Bethany Christian School, and we felt it was awesome to honor her memory and give her a lasting legacy so that everyone knows, when they come to Bethany Christian School, that Mrs. Shepherd had a very important role in the school and left a legacy,” said Katie Arter, social media coordinator. “Her husband, Bill Shepherd, was extremely honored to have that.” Shepherd was particularly known for her volunteerism. “She holds the record for

most volunteer hours,” Arter said, noting that Shepherd helped establish the foundation for what the school has become today. Shepherd was also known as a devoted member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church. “Everybody knew her, and she knew everybody. She had a heart for God and a heart for children,” Arter said. “There’s not many people on this Earth like her, and she’s left such a legacy. Everybody who knew her too seems to have a lit piece of Kitty in their heart.”

The Family Life Center, now known as the Kitty June Shepherd gymnasium, also serves as a gathering place for the community. Added to the school building in 1997, the space was in need of updating. Contributions from last year’s fundraiser enabled the school to install a new floor, update lighting and sound systems, paint and add new basketball hoops, a scoreboard and bleachers. Deb Bakelez, one of the foundation teachers of the school, paid tribute to

Shepherd during the fundraising banquet, concentrating on Shepherd’s desire to serve at Bethany. A dedication plaque was revealed, followed by student performances and a banquet dinner in the newly refurbished gym. Arter made the financial appeal during the dinner. Proceeds earned this year will be allocated for education enhancements, such as textbooks, whiteboards and classroom materials. The school also announced that it will

by providing office space, computers, supplies, and other amenities. Dube began her career at the Chester County Library in January 2001 as the business/finance manager. She developed a passion for library services and in 2006 was awarded an IMLS grant to pursue a master’s degree in library science at Drexel University. In September 2008, she was appointed as the director at the Chester County Library. During her tenure, she has overseen many physical changes to the buildings and strives to create a welcoming atmosphere for all the library’s customers. She said one of her major accomplishments has been the redesign of the balcony area of the library, which houses the new young

adult area, the Jacobs Technology Center with its Digital Media Lab, and the spacious OIC adult tutoring area. The Difference of One Award is given in memory of the Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, founder of OIC of America. Sullivan impacted the quality of life in Philadelphia by developing an economic empowerment plan that led to a set of principles that aimed to empower people in their own communities in Philadelphia, across the country, and around the world. The Difference of One Award, developed by Chester County OIC, is given in honor of people who singlehandedly have made a difference in supporting the values of Chester County OIC. On Oct. 26, Marguerite Dube, director of the Chester County Library and its Henrietta Hankin Branch, received the Difference of One Award at the Chester County OIC’s 39th annual Award Gala. Dube received the 2018 Difference of One Award for her dedication to public service and personal commitments to excellence in helping her community and its members. She will introduce the choirs and make announcements about their upcoming activities or concerts. The concert coordinator will be Bill Johnson, a retired OASD music instructor. “I’ll be directing the first and last numbers,” he explained. “We will have close to 150 voices.” To prepare for the combined musical numbers, the choirs will rehearse on their own prior to the concert and then hold a combined rehearsal that afternoon. “They practice in school or at church, and that way they learn the combined songs ahead of time,” explained Johnson. “When they come together at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, that gives me a chance to stage them, and we run through the two songs.” A choir that is performing at the event for the first time this year will be the Kennett Community Choir. “It is neat to see a chorus from another school district,” said Norris. “Penningtonville is also new this year, which is my home church. “One of the popular acts coming back this year is the AME Church choir,” Norris continued. “They are amazingly good and have lots of energy. One year the AME Church brought saxophones and bongos and all kinds of cool (instruments).” Norris said the goal of the concert is to raise $10,000 for the food cupboard, which is run by director Judy Dougherty. “This concert is part of a capital campaign,” Norris said. “That’s (the amount) that Judy needs to keep her operational to pay rent and utilities. There is a high demand for food for our area. It is a highneed time, especially this time of year.” Norris noted that the auditorium holds just under 1,000 people and that he would love to see those seats filled on the afternoon of the concert. “It’s a way to kick off the holiday season,” he said. “Most of the choirs do faith-based Christmas songs. It’s a very nice concert; it’s always enjoyable.” The volunteer-run Octorara Area Food Cupboard, located at 714 W. Main St. in Parkesburg, serves the OASD region, including Atglen, Christiana, Cochranville, Compass, Parkesburg, Pomeroy, Sadsbury and Wagontown. In addition to supplying local families and individuals in need with nonperishable and fresh foods, it administers an Emergency Food Box program to those facing crisis situations. Tips To Simplify Holiday Cooking Families big and small typically celebrate the holiday season together. For some, celebrating the holidays with family requires traveling, while others stay put and welcome family and friends into their homes. At some point during the holiday season, celebrants who host family and friends will no doubt prepare a home-cooked meal for their loved ones. Cooking for a crowd can seem like a daunting task, especially for first-time hosts. However, there are various ways for hosts to simplify cooking for a crowd this holiday season. These four tips will help hosts to tackle feeding a crowd. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners

when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easier on themselves by choosing dishes they have made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely will not require as much time to prepare. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own home-cooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to

Fishing For A Good Deal?

connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance. Hosts also should not feel pressured to cook more food than is necessary. Holiday meals have a tendency to be lavish, but hosts do not have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food that will likely end up as leftovers or trash. Hosts should get a final headcount in the days before everyone comes over and adjust their recipes accordingly. If the big meal is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so, come the big day, all they need to do is turn on the oven and let the meal cook while the family spends time together.

Contact Lens Safety Tips Posted According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Many consumers may not be aware that contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, the FDA states that contact lenses are not over-the-counter (OTC) devices and companies that sell them as such are misbranding the device and violating Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations by selling contact lenses without having a valid prescription. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends several tips for contact lens care. Individuals should always visit an eye doctor to be fitted for contact lenses before use. Contact lenses should always be worn under the supervision of an eye doctor. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized,

including removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub. Individuals should never sleep in contact lenses unless authorized by an eye doctor, as this may increase the risk of infection, according to a new report from the CDC. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in water (tap or sterile water). Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. The contact lens case should be kept clean and replaced regularly, at least every three months. Old solution should not be reused or “topped off” in the lens case. A cracked or damaged lens case should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. Individuals should never trade or share lenses. Contact lenses should be removed, if the eyes become red, irritated, or painful. If vision issues continue, individuals should contact an eye doctor immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, readers may call 800-331-2020 or visit www.preventblindness.org/ wearing-contact-lenses.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) appreciates the sacrifices made by all veterans and wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. To prepare for the future, veterans are encouraged to register with the DMVA, apply for federal health care benefits, and safeguard important military paperwork. Taking these steps when transitioning back to civilian life may help to make accessing military benefits easier going forward. Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry at www. register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits, and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www. va.gov/HEALTHBENEFITS/apply/. It is also important for veterans to

safeguard their DD-214/215 and other military documents by filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are the NGB-22 and NGB-23. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. However, veterans who need help should never hesitate to contact the DMVA for assistance with searching for any military documents. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD214/215 or other military documentation may contact 717-861-8910 or ra-req@pa.gov.
