Bidder registration will open at 9 a.m., followed by the auction at 10 a.m. The first-time event is being held to make room for additional merchandise to be displayed in the store, which is located at 317 Main St., Parkesburg. Wreaths Across America will honor local veterans BY FRANCINE FULTON
Wreaths are placed at the graves of veterans every holiday season as part of the Wreaths Across America program, which seeks to remember and honor those who served in the military and teach others, especially children, about the value of freedom. Locally, a Wreaths Across America program will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16. The event will begin with a ceremony at noon at Pequea Valley (PV) Intermediate School, 166 S. New Holland Road, Kinzers.
Wreaths will then be placed at ceremonies in the Octorara and PV school districts. The effort is being led by Gap resident Paula Diem, who brought the tradition to the area after taking part in the Wreaths Across America ceremony several times at Arlington National Cemetery. “This will be our fifth time placing wreaths,” said Diem. “ We started with 1,250 (wreaths). This year, we will be placing 2,800 wreaths in 27 cemeteries.” Diem will lead the ceremony, which will be held indoors and is See Wreaths Across America pg 2

The community is invited to enjoy Christmas in Christiana on Saturday Dec. 9. The celebration will include activities at the Christiana Freight Station, an appearance by Santa, a “Light Up Christiana” decorating contest and events at the Brinton House,
the new headquarters of the Christiana Historical Society. “It’s a wonderful day for Christiana. We get between 700 and 800 people from all around (who attend),” said Jim Groff, vice president of the Christiana Historical Society and a member of the Christiana Lions Club. The Historical Society of Salisbury Township has been blessed with many gifts. But how many of us have neglected to give the gift of history to our descendants? A TV ad remarks, “The only thing we never have enough of is time.” That seems to be so true these days. We snap a photo, but what it depicts and why we snapped it is not recorded. The material stays on our phone without further recognition. There will be nothing to tell our great-grandchildren what that photo means. Admittedly, this is not new. How many of us have unmarked photos from the 1800s? Relatives, yes, but who? I always feel sad for those in old photos. They represent a onceliving person and now they are cast away because no one knows who they are. I have many unmarked sepias myself. Have you ever said, “I wish I had asked Mother that when she was alive”? Or “My grandfather would have known the answer to that.” Now may be the time to label those many photos or start a conversation with great aunt Elizabeth about what she played with when she was a little girl 90 years ago. Or ask Uncle Hiram how he got that scar on his forehead when he was a kid. Teach your great-grands the names of their grandparents, more than just Mam and Pop-Pop. Don’t

place wreaths on Dec. 16 should contact Diem at 717-587-1315. “We encourage preregistering for wreath placement,” she added. “It gives us an idea of how many (volunteers) we will have in each cemetery.” According to www.wreaths acrossamerica.org, the tradition began in Harrington, Maine, in 1992, when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company discovered he had a surplus of more than 5,000 wreaths. Working with representatives in Washington, D.C., the wreath maker had the extras placed at Arlington National Cemetery in one of the older cemetery sections that had few visitors. From there, the organization grew. In 2022, Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers placed more than 2.7 million wreaths at 3,702 participating locations.
