Celebrating Christmas in Christiana

Holiday music and refreshments, appearances by Santa Claus, an open house at the Christiana Freight Station and more will be featured as part of the Christmas in Christiana celebration to be held on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15. Many events will be centered at the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., home of the Christiana Historical Society.

The event is being organized by several community organizations, including the historical society, the Christiana Lions Club and the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, which

is headquartered at the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.

Events will begin on Dec. 14 when children age 12 and under can join Santa at the Freight Station from 3 to 5 p.m. Children will receive a hot dog dinner and a photo with Santa. There will also be hayrides and refreshments, including cookies. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Melodies of Christmas on the Porch” will be presented by the historical society at the Brinton House on Dec. 14. During the event, to be held from 4 to 7 p.m., a guitarist and carolers in period attire will provide live music on the porch. Free hot chocolate, coffee, tea and popcorn will be served by

historical society volunteers while visitors enjoy the music and play board games, marbles or checkers. Information about joining the historical society will be available.

Guests will be able to ring a railroad bell next to the porch for a donation, with proceeds to benefit the ongoing restoration of the Brinton House. A bonfire will be tended by Boy Scout Troop 20. Borough residents are asked to donate nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, which will be picked up by members of the Christiana Fire Company as they escort Santa Claus through Christiana and the surrounding area from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 14. Santa will be portrayed

LanChester Chorus to present holiday concert

Holiday tunes like “Silver Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” as well as religious hymns, including “Mary, How Could You Have Known?” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” will be featured at a Christmas concert to be presented by the LanChester Chorus on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana.

The chorus, which gets its name from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties, will be led by director Kimberly Kusnersyk. The accompanist will be Christine Smith. Light refreshments, including cookies and punch, will be served after the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received.

For the concert, the fire hall’s banquet room will be festively decorated by members of the

Family continues to spread awareness about CO danger

Even though it has been 10 years since the death of Carly Imbierowicz, who died of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, her family remains vigilant in its efforts to educate the public about the danger of CO and to provide CO detectors to people in need through the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation.

The foundation is named for the daughter of Donna and Matt

Imbierowicz, who passed away at the age of 16 on Nov. 22, 2014, along with her friend Daulton Pointek, 17. They died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a vehicle as they drove home from a movie. At the time, both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Junior-Senior High School.

During November, which was Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation launched the

chorus with poinsettias and greens. Members will dress formally for the occasion. “The men wear dark suits and red ties, and the ladies wear black with red scarves,” noted Kusnersyk. “It’s a mixed choral group - alto, soprano, bass and tenor - and a mixture of ages. They sing very well. Most of them have sung in their church choirs or other choirs. They have a musical background.”

In addition to the songs already mentioned, music will include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” and “Ding Dong Merrily on High.”

2024-2025 SCHOOL TAXES

PEQUEA VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Pequea Valley School District Real Estate Taxes were mailed to all property owners in July 2024. The Penalty payment period will end December 31, 2024 and all delinquent payments will then be turned over to the Lancaster County Tax Claim Bureau. If you have not received your tax bill, please call Lancaster County Tax Collection Bureau at 717-569-4521 - Option 4. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve your responsibility to pay taxes.

“We do a mixture of religious and sacred music - familiar songs and some that are not quite as familiar. It’s always nice to hear something new,” said Kusnersyk. “We will also do a Grinch medley.”

According to a history of the chorus, the group has been meeting in Christi -

ana for the past 74 years.

The group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffett and Richard Wright. Wright served as accompanist and business manager for the chorus from 1950 through 2008. In addition to Moffett, the directors over the years have included Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickel and Bill Young.

Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. The group has performed several times at the White House during its Christmas tours and at the Kennedy Center.

The chorus performed at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and at the open house at the governor’s mansion.

The chorus has sung the national anthem numerous times for the

Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Stormers.

In the summer, the group performed evening concerts at the Convention Hall in Cape May, N.J., and for many years it presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J.

The chorus also sings at local retirement communities and the Christmas concert every December at the Christiana Fire Company. “We do this annually as our Christmas gift to the community,” said Joan Esworthy, who has been a member of the chorus for more than 20 years.

Next year, the group will celebrate its 75th anniversary, and it is planning special events. “For the 75th anniversary, previous members will come back and sing, and we will do a program based on some of the older music the chorus did years ago,” Kusnersyk explained. “I have programs that date to 1964 of what music they sang. We will go retro and to do a retro program.”

She added that the chorus previously performed in the old fire hall in Christiana, which is now where the borough’s municipal offices are located. “They had fire engines in the room, and they took them out (for the concert),” she recalled. “That room had the best acoustics.”

Kusnersyk was a member of the LanChester Chorus before being named its director about 20 years ago. “I was a choir director for 20 to 25 years, and my mother was before that. It was a natural progression,” she said. “I don’t have a musical degree; I learned by doing.”

The chorus is always in need of additional singers. There are no formal auditions. However, anyone interested in joining the group is asked to email kkusnersyk@yahoo.com for more information.

“Operation Save A Family - Save A Pet” initiative, asking the public to donate new CO detectors, which will be distributed by the Cochranville Fire Company. Financial donations are also being accepted, which will be used to purchase additional detectors. Those who would like to make a donation to the effort may visit the foundation’s website, www .cmiawareness.org.

Members of the Imbierowicz family, including Donna and Matt and Carly’s brother, Andy, along with family friends Jenna Dowling and Emma, Maggi and Annie Arriviello, presented the donations to Judah Kocher, assistant fire chief, and Doug Lapp, deputy fire chief.

“Our goal is to collect and distribute 250 CO detectors by the end of the year,” said Donna. “Operation Save A Family - Save A Pet is a program where CO detectors are donated to fire houses. Cochranville Fire Company (members) were the first responders to (Carly and Daulton’s) accident. Cochranville takes (the CO detectors) into communities. They determine where they are needed.”

Donna is also working on donating CO detectors to the Keystone Valley Fire Department in Parkesburg for distribution at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center.

The Imbierowicz family has been donating CO detectors to the Cochranville Fire Company for the past three years and plans to continue that effort. In November, the family supplied 118 detectors that were donated by Lowe’s in Avon Grove, where Donna works.

The family also brought along Foxy, an English mastiff, which is the offspring of Carly’s dog, Malachi. Foxy was presented with a fire company T-shirt. The family bred Malachi in memory of Carly, nicknaming Malachi’s 11 puppies as CO Awareness Angels. Those who adopted the dogs agreed to share Carly’s story.

Donna said that creating the foundation is a way to honor Carly’s memory and provide an important service in the community.

“It’s hard especially this time of year because it is near the anniversary (of Carly’s death),” said Donna. “(These efforts are) part of healing process. We are trying to keep her spirit alive.”

According to www.cmi awareness.org, carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because it does not have an odor. Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure include dizziness, headache, fatigue or weakness, coughing,

irregular breathing, chest pain and disorientation.

However, CO poisoning is preventable. In the case of Carly and Daulton, a broken exhaust pipe allowed the CO gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. The teenagers did not know there was CO entering the car, and they died within minutes.

To prevent CO poisoning in vehicles, it is recommended that people have their car’s exhaust system and mufflers inspected regularly and maintained. Also, people should not warm up their vehicle in the garage with the garage door down or partially down. On snowy days, vehicle owners should remove snow or ice that might be blocking the vehicle’s tail pipe. Those who are stuck in traffic or sitting in the car when it is

idling should partially open a window. Finally, battery-operated CO detectors are available that can be placed in cars and trucks.

The website also offers tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in homes. Homeowners should have their home heating system inspected regularly. Generators or other gasoline-powered engines should never be run inside the home. Always make sure the vents on fireplaces are open when burning a fire. Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year. All homes should have battery-powered CO detectors. Like smoke detectors, batteries in CO detectors should be checked in the spring and fall of each year. For additional tips or to learn more about the foundation, visit the previously mentioned website.

Parkesburg Lions Club announces holiday decorating contest

Parkesburg residents who are creative and festive when decorating their homes for the season are invited to take part in the Parkesburg Lions Club’s annual holiday decorating contest.

A panel of judges will drive around during the evening of Friday, Dec. 13, for judging. “(Participants should) be sure to have any

lights, blow-ups, etc., ready to be judged by 6 p.m.,” noted Lions Club president Robin McKenna.

There is no fee to participate, but homeowners should register in advance by sending a message to McKenna at the club’s Facebook page, “Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved.”

New this year is that residents will be able to vote for their favorite homes. There

residents will get a peek inside the house, which has been undergoing a major renovation.

Two rooms will be open for the event, which will be decorated with Christmas trees and furnished for the event. “Santa will talk with the children about what gift they would like to give to a parent, teacher or guardian,” explained historical society member Charlene Ranck. “Once they have talked with Santa, the children will go through the door to the Santa Shoppe in the other room. The children can pick small gifts, which have been donated. It may be a pair of socks or a

flashlight or keychain. They can wrap it, put on sticker that says, ‘Don’t open until Christmas,’ and they get to take it along with them.”

While waiting for Santa, children may play checkers, marbles and other games, take part in a scavenger hunt around the Brinton House or complete Christmas crafts. Refreshments will be provided.

An open house will be held at the railroad station on Dec. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Visitors will be able to tour a retired Conrail caboose, enjoy a 10-by-30-foot model train layout and learn about the railroad history in Christiana through a display of

the top three homes,” said McKenna, noting that the winners will be determined by the judges and the residents. “In addition, these winners will be provided with a sign to be displayed (in their yard) that indicates their winning status.” The signs will be collected by the Lions after the holidays.

Other activities of the Parkesburg Lions Club include quarterly food drives at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Christiana. McKenna reported that the most recent food drive in early November resulted in 903 pounds of nonperishable food donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

The club is also collecting clean plastics through a recycling program offered by the Trex Company. Collection containers are located at Parkesburg Free Library, 105 West St.; Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg; and Pine Creek Animal Hospital, 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap. “So far, five benches have been added to the Parkesburg community through these efforts,” McKenna noted.

In addition, the club has placed collection boxes in the community where residents can place used or unwanted eyeglasses, which are later refurbished into new eyewear for people in need. Collection containers are located at Walmart,100 Commons Drive, Parkesburg, at the Parkesburg Library and at local eye doctors’ offices. Glasses can also be given to any Lions Club member.

The Parkesburg Lions Club is always looking for new members. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting. Meetings are generally held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St. When meetings are held at different locations, information is posted on the Facebook page.

An upcoming fundraiser, Tingo, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025. This event is a tea combined with a mini bingo game.

Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church, Paradise, and moderator of a group of Pequea Valley-area pastors and others in ministry that meets for

refreshments, music, and possibly a campfire. “There will be a short program with Christmas carols and a five-minute reflection on what unites us in our shared hope before the outdoor lights are switched on,” reported Fisher. “It’s a symbolic beginning of the season.” Attendees will also have the chance to make an ornament to be placed on an artificial tree inside The Factory.

Shira Zimmerman, senior director of adult services with The Factory, attends the monthly pastors’ luncheon. “(Zimmerman) is the point person for much of the integration between The Factory Ministry opportunities and the churches,” explained Fisher.

“A lot of (Factory clients) do Christmas alone or (aren’t connected) to a church body throughout the year,” explained Zimmerman. “If they feel the inclination to do something church related at Christmas, they don’t know where to start.” Zimmerman noted that the tree lighting is a public event hosted by pastors. “Here’s a place to start,” she said, adding that

Factory communications director Ellie Green has designed a handout with information about Christmas programs and Sunday services at local churches for attendees of the tree lighting.

Fisher stated that several area churches, including Pequea Baptist, Grace Point, Hershey Mennonite, and Leacock Presbyterian, along with Keystone and The Factory Ministries, are responsible for the event. “Other churches will be represented there, as well,” noted Fisher, who added that the tree lighting is a good fit for the pastors’ group. “It gives us an opportunity to display our unity because there is far more in our doctrine that unites us than divides us,” explained Fisher of the churches’ willingness to participate together in a community event. Past tree lightings have attracted about 100 participants. The event will be held rain or shine. “We will move into The Factory if the weather doesn’t cooperate,” said Fisher.
