“A Celtic Christmas With Charlie Zahm,” featuring holiday songs and Celtic favorites by the popular balladeer, will be held at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Oxford on Friday, Dec. 14. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Concertgoers are asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. It was all they had (as a source of heat).” At the end of the service, everyone will sing “Silent Night” together. There will be light refreshments downstairs in the church hall following the service. According to www.sadsburyfriends meeting.org, the congregations of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, do not have a pastor and there are no set readings during normal services. Instead, members gather for silent reflection. Should people feel moved to speak, they may share their thoughts with the group. The service may be completely silent, or at other times vocal ministry may come in the form of prayer, praise of God, song, teaching or witnessing. Worship ends with the shaking of hands. Sadsbury Friends from pg 1 The Sadsbury Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1747. Historically a peace church, Sadsbury Friends played a part in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Originally, men and women gathered for worship in separate rooms, with partitions between them that could be opened or closed, but that separation is a part of the past. “It is pure and total relaxation. I have had the pleasure of seeing Claudia Kirk (Reiki Master) three times so far. I knew I had to do something about how I felt – tight, tense and a lot of joint pain. I saw the article announcing the opening of her practice and thought, ‘why not?’ I am so glad I made that phone call! Reiki is very different from any other massage I’ve had. For me it is about getting rid of the negative or blocked energy we all have in our bodies due to everyday living and stress. Through Claudia’s healing touch, Reiki has allowed me to experience positive, relaxing energy.”

The foundation is named for the late Carly Marie Imbierowicz, who, along with her friend Daulton “Daulty” Pointek, passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on the way home from a movie in November 2014 when a broken exhaust pipe allowed deadly carbon monoxide gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. Both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Area High School. Since then, Carly’s mother, Donna, has been an advocate for raising awareness of the dangers and prevalence of carbon monoxide poisoning. Also in attendance at the meeting with Dinniman was Kayla Stoltzfus, who was Carly’s friend and a member of Daulton’s class at Octorara. Kayla is currently a student at West Chester University. “(Kayla) did her senior project on CO awareness, and now she has taken the CO awareness advocacy to West Chester University,” Donna explained. She noted that Kayla also helps out at the Octorara Angels Rainbow 5K Run/Walk and Carbon Monoxide Awareness Event that is sponsored annually by the foundation at Octorara Area High School. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019. Donna noted that the proclamation was on display at a CO awareness table manned by Octorara graduate Hannah Unitis at Our Lady of Consolation Parish’s annual Christmas craft
fair and bazaar on Nov. 17 and at a CO awareness table at Widener University in November, that was manned by Octorara graduate Sarah Black and the Alpha Omega Epsilon sorority. Dinniman also took the time to warn residents about the dangers of CO, especially in wintertime. “As colder temperatures set in, more residents are using heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, generators and other appliances that produce carbon monoxide,” he stated. “There’s also the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in malfunctioning vehicles or those with exhaust pipes that are blocked by leaves, mud or snow. It’s important to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and take steps to prevent it because it can very difficult to detect.” Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and it cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector. Dinniman said he remains committed to educating motorists, especially teenagers and student drivers, about the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning. Through these efforts, PennDOT has revised the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual to include important information about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Since the inception of Decade to Doorways in 2012, Chester County has served more than 6,200 clients experiencing homelessness, of which more than 1,300 were children. Nearly 225,000 nights of emergency shelter were made available to the most vulnerable in Chester County, and 1,451 people found permanent housing. Earlier this year, Decade to Doorways published its most recent operational plan to ensure the program continues to prevent homelessness and quickly re-house those experiencing homelessness rather than just manage homelessness. The updated plan will guide the approximately 35 organizations that work to see that the Chester County community is healthy, housed and stable.

Administrators and staff of Decade to Doorways, Chester County’s initiative to end homelessness, recently honored a number of organizations that are working to prevent and eventually eradicate chronic homelessness in the county. Representatives from approximately 40 groups attended the event, and 1 0 Hometown Heroes were nominated by their peers for their dedication to pursuing an end to homelessness within Chester County. The event included an address by keynote speaker Julia Orlando, who, as director of the Bergen County, N.J., Housing, Health and Human Service Center, led that county to be the first in the nation to successfully reach and maintain what is known as functional zero for chronic homelessness.

Reiki Office Opens In Quarryville
Everything is FREE!
Reiki practitioners Claudia Kirk and Jennifer Buttriss opened an office in Solanco Office Suites, 215 W. Fourth St., Suite 108, Quarryville, in June. Kirk provides services through her business, Southern End Reiki, from noon to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Buttriss’ business, Reiki by Jenn LLC, offers flexible hours. Reiki - pronounced “RAY-key” - was developed by Mikao Usui of Japan as an ethical approach to life and a way to utilize the energy of loving compassion to support the body’s innate or natural healing abilities. It is not a religion and does not aim to endorse or oppose any faith. The ethical cornerstone of reiki is embodied in the five principles of its founder: do not anger, do not worry, be humble, devote yourself to your work, and show

compassion to yourself and others. Kirk and Buttriss assert that reiki can be used in addition to conventional medical care because it is noninvasive and has not been shown to have harmful effects. In a 2015 article, “Reiki: In Depth,” the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health described reiki as “a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of facilitating the person’s own healing response.” Kirk became a reiki master in 2009 because she had benefited from reiki and wanted to share it with others. In 2016, she began working at the Lancaster Reiki Clinic, a monthly outreach to the community held at the Farm and Home Center, where people can try reiki for a donation. This

work deepened and strengthened Kirk’s commitment to the principles of reiki. Following Kirk’s retirement from the Quarryville Post Office, she looked for an opportunity to practice reiki in the borough and connected with Buttriss. Buttriss is a certified life coach, wellness coach, fitness instructor, and reiki master. In her journey to understand the human body and how food and emotions affect it, Buttriss discovered the reiki approach to energy and healing. She is excited to combine reiki with her life and wellness coaching to provide clients with a wellrounded way to address issues regarding health and weight. In addition, Buttriss has also given reiki to horses at Noble Hill Horse Rescue. When humans receive reiki treatments, they remain fully clothed and relax on a table with a pillow. During sessions, which run for 30 minutes or an hour, the practitioner will use various hand positions on or above the client’s body, primarily the head, shoulders, abdomen, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Kirk and Buttriss noted that many people become deeply relaxed and enter a quiet state of slumber, and they have reported feeling increased warmth emanating from practitioners’ hands. After a session, clients may feel relaxed and less stressed, and they may feel a lessening of physical pain.
Reiki practitioners Claudia Kirk (pictured) and Jennifer Buttriss (not pictured) offer services at an office in the Solanco Office Suites, Quarryville, which they opened in June. According to Kirk and Buttriss, reiki is offered in health care facilities, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and New Jersey. Kirk and Buttriss also noted that at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital, reiki is available to clients after total joint replacements and in the chemotherapy infusion suite. Some studies have reported that reiki may help to reduce pain, anxiety, and blood pressure after knee replacement surgery. Readers who would like to try reiki for themselves may schedule appointments by calling Kirk at 717-786-2144 or Buttriss at 717-314-0408.

Freedom Life Church will serve as one of more than 450 churches around the world that will host Night to Shine on Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Shady Maple Banquet Facility, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. The event is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. Night to Shine is a prom experience centered on God’s love for people with special needs age 14 and older. Every guest of Night to Shine enters this complimentary event on a red carpet complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and make-up stations, shoe shining areas, limousine rides, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, karaoke, prom favors, and a dance floor. There will also be a Respite Room for parents and caretakers. All of these things lead up to the moment when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom. All Night to Shine guests or their caretakers are asked to register at https://freedom.life/night-to-shine. The first 75 applicants will be accepted.

A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives, she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25 to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a nine-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery, said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours. According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends, said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle, Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are. Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour, said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours), noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here. Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here, said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends. See ALCATHON pg 10

Donation Drive Posted The Salvation Army will benefit from an annual holiday donation drive being organized by Sheetz For the Kidz. During the month of December, customers can donate at checkout at all Sheetz store locations. One hundred percent of customer donations will go directly to support the children. Each of the 582 stores will support 16 children from its local community by partnering with The Salvation Army to receive wish lists from local families. Employees will volunteer their time to shop for items, wrap items and host holiday parties for the children and their families. At the parties, Santa will greet the children and present them with new toys, along with clothes and other items meeting basic needs. The children and their families will enjoy food, crafts, games and opportunities to take pictures with Santa. In addition to donating during checkout, readers may support the program by purchasing specially marked items at Sheetz, with a portion of proceeds supporting the holiday donation drive; shopping on AmazonSmile at https://smile.amazon.com and selecting Sheetz For the Kidz as the charity they would like to support; donating at www.sheetzforthekidz.org; or purchasing Sheetz Art Project swag at www.sheetzshop.com.

Road Runners Plan Christmas Eve Activity “You show up with a friend or come alone and make a friend,” said Kathi Markley, a member of the Lancaster Road Runners Club. Markley was referencing the annual free Christmas Eve Run the club has held for about two decades. Markley wants those considering taking part to know that they will have company along the route no matter what their pace. “There are faster people (and) middle-ofthe-pack runners and people who meander slowly,” she said. “You don’t have to feel like you have to be an Olympic-caliber athlete (to take part).”
Markley and other club members have planned this year’s run to begin with runners meeting near the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company, 33-35 N. Market St., Lancaster, adjacent to Central Market, at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. The run will begin at 9 a.m. Runners need not be club members to join in the event. According to Markley, the run follows a course that is a modified version of the Red Rose Run. “(The Red Rose Run) normally starts in Binns Park area,” explained Markley, “but this starts near Central Market and loops through Lancaster County Park.” She noted that the course, which runs downhill on Duke Street, is
about 4 miles in length. “There is a flat section through County Park, and if you’re running with a friend and chatting it goes by quickly,” she said. “Coming back there’s a change of climb.” Markley added that there is a group of members who often walk the course. Following the run, participants generally take some time to mingle by browsing through Central Market and then meeting at 11 a.m. for brunch at the Dispensing Company. Markley said that the number of runners depends on the weather. “We have had as many as 40 or as few as 10,” she noted. She added that parking spaces are available in a number of adjacent
lots, but parking will not be free. Readers who would like more information may visit www.lrrclub.org and click on “LRRClub Christmas Eve Run” on Dec. 24. In addition to the free Christmas Eve Run, Markley noted that the club holds free Tuesday night fun runs in Long’s Park and Sunday morning trail runs at Lancaster County Park. “These are free and open to everyone,” she stated, adding that often the free runs are good opportunities for prospective members to get a feel for club activities. “Try it if you’re thinking about joining and you want to know what it’s like,” she invited. “We welcome everybody.”
