The fifth annual Contemplative Christmas Eve Service will be held at Sadsbury Friends Meeting House on Tuesday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. All are welcome to get away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season for an hour of music, silence and poetry by the fireplace at the meeting house. This will be a candlelight service, with candles lit during intervals throughout the service. The underlying theme for the service is hope. “We always hold it at 4 in the afternoon because when people arrive it’s still light outside, and when they leave its dark,” said Connie Webster, meeting clerk. “During the service more and more candles get lit.” As in past years, the quiet, thoughtful service is in contrast to the modern
consumer culture that surrounds the Christmas season. “Besides the historical building, I think it’s a different kind of service because we have several moments of silence interspersed throughout. We have the music and we have somebody doing readings, but we also have several times when everybody sits in silence for a few minutes. I think some people like that,” Webster said. “I’ve been told that for a lot of people that have not been to a Friends meeting before, the moments of silence are good for them.” Music will be provided by Matt Krebs on piano, and his daughters, Landry and Anika, will be the vocalists. The music will mainly be traditional carols and sacred songs of the season. In addition to enjoying the service, visitors will feel a touch of history as they experience what a Quaker (Society See Christmas Eve Service pg 3
Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will hold two Christmas Eve services on Tuesday, Dec. 24. A year ago, Pequea Valley High School senior Carlos Cordero and some of his fellow Advanced Placement students were asked to help a new student from Guatemala to translate from Spanish to English. Located at 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House is one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County. Constructed in 1747, the building follows the typical layout of the time with a partition in the middle of the main floor. With the partition open, the men and women worshiped together, then the partition was closed to separate men and women for each to have a separate business meeting.
House is located one-half mile east of Route 41 in Gap. For more information, readers may visit www.sadsburyfriends meeting.org, email info@ sadsburyfriendsmeeting.org or call Webster at 484-985-0454.

taught at The Episcopal Academy’s Devon campus,” explained Moore, who visited Alexander with his students. Moore also shared his work with Alexander, who in December of 1989 sent Moore a letter noting how much he enjoyed the class visits and adding, “Best yet is your gift of the ‘Journey Into Darkness’ volumes. ... Now that I see the books all together, I … am enormously impressed.” Moore also included a letter from Jim Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust. Moore had originally contacted the trust concerning a historic site called Stones River National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Up From Corinth,” one of the books in the “Journey Into Darkness” series, describes the extremely difficult battle that began in that area on New Year’s Eve of 1862 in the pouring rain. “I sent him the excerpt (describing the battle),” said Moore. “(Lighthizer) wrote back that one of the key components of the Civil War Trust’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of battlefields in our nation’s history. “He said, ‘Your thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written series supplements this mission very well.’” Each June, Moore takes part in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. A young man named Paul Wunderlich works with him portraying 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem to tell visitors the story of one of the boys of the war. The Freedoms Foundation National Awards have recognized responsible citizens with the George Washington Honor Medal since 1949, honoring more than 50,000 citizens. Moore will receive the medal at an awards ceremony scheduled to be conducted at the Valley Forge Volunteer Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation in February 2020.

Civil War. Moore began the work in 1960 when he was still in high school. The writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed, and as the years passed, the author attended college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. By 1989, Moore had completed much of the manuscript, but the first book in the series was not published until 2011. Asked how he came to receive the award, Moore leaned back and said, “That is an interesting story.” The story actually began in the 1980s, when Moore offered some photographs to Paul Sanborn, who was then a historian with the Freedoms Foundation. At the same time, he showed Sanborn the manuscript for “Journey Into Darkness.” “(Sanborn) thought it looked interesting,” said Moore, who in February of 1989 received a letter from Sanborn saying he had nominated Moore for the award. Moore kept a copy of the letter, but he never heard any more about the award. In 2017, Moore tried to contact Sanborn, wanting to show him the published work. He spoke with a representative of the Freedoms Foundation named Kevin Ferris. Ferris was unable to connect Moore with Sanborn, but he did give Moore information on how to submit an application for consideration for the award. On Dec. 17, 2018, Moore submitted his work in the public communications category of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards program. The entry included a one-page summary and several supporting documents, which could be letters of commendation, photographs, news clippings, or a supporting video. Included with Moore’s submission was a note of commendation from Lloyd Alexander, author of “The Black Cauldron.” “(Alexander) lived in the area where I was teaching when I

During OneRunTogether’s fifth annual fundraising dinner, Vernon Murphy, founder and executive director, discussed how the organization raises money to benefit local cancer patients. and the annual “Hard to the Core” 5K Mud Run at Weaver’s Orchard in Morgantown. The group also sells pumpkin rolls in November to raise funds. For more information about ORT or to donate, readers may visit www.oneruntogether.org or www.facebook.com/onerun together. OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organization that provides spiritual and financial support to cancer patients undergoing treatment, held its fifth annual fundraising dinner and silent auction on Nov. 8 at the Downingtown Country Club. Vernon Murphy, ORT founder and executive director, explained that because local businesses sponsored the cost of the evening, 100% of the night’s donations benefited the charity. “Sponsors paid for the dinner so guests could attend for free and be able to donate,” said Murphy, noting that more than 140 guests were in attendance. “We were blessed to raise over $36,000 that will go directly to help local cancer patients.” In addition to the meal, the event included a silent auction where attendees placed bids on more than 35 items such as artwork, gift baskets, gift certificates, tickets to sporting events and more. Each year, the dinner features a guest speaker who was helped by the ORT organization. “This year, our speaker was Nichole, a local cancer patient who was diagnosed with uterine cancer with metastasis to the lungs last year. We were able to help her pay bills,” Murphy noted. Murphy founded the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. He explained that the name of the organization refers to the 5K runs that are held by ORT throughout the year, along with other fundraisers. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” “We are a nonprofit organization based in Coatesville that helps local cancer patients in
Berks and Chester counties,” Murphy said. “We assist them with paying bills like rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, taxes and child care, just to name a few. We started in August 2011 and have given over 360 grants. We also visit the patients we help, give them a Bible and pray with them.” Those who wish to apply to receive funds while undergoing treatment may complete an application at www.onerun together.org by clicking on Patient Grant Application. ORT’s board of directors reviews all applications, which must be signed and submitted by an oncologist or a certified professional. After an application is approved, bills are submitted for direct payment. ORT holds various fundraising events throughout the year. Events held in 2019 included the Creamery Hustle 5K and 1-mile walk held at Penn State Berks in Reading, the nighttime Glow Run 5K held at Honeybrook Golf Club

Turkey Bowl from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted local residents and those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area. “As is the case each year, we had many local runners as well as participants from all over the country from Florida to Maine and from New Jersey to Colorado, usually in visiting family nearby,” said Gregory. “We had great showing from Honey Brook and surrounding towns as well and many families that have made this a tradition.”
Nearly 400 participants turned out for the 28th annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. This year’s runners and walkers had to brave blustery conditions. “Despite the wind, we had 389 participants this year,” said camp director Bruce Gregory. “Some runners commented how windy it was around the lake, but they otherwise enjoyed the race.”

He noted that the youngest registered participant this year was age 3 and ran with her parents, and the oldest was 76. In the 10th year for the course, the top overall male winner was Noah Taylor from Mohnton, with a time of 17 minutes, 29 seconds. The top overall female winner was Samantha Bingaman from Ocean City, Md., with a time of 20:41. “We had 306 finishers in the 5K race,” Gregory noted. Noah, 16, is a junior at Twin Valley High School (TVHS), where he competes in crosscountry and indoor track. It was his first appearance in the Tel Hai Turkey Bowl. His twin brother, Iain, also completed the 5K, finishing third overall. “I just wanted to have fun with it and see what happened,” Noah said. “I didn’t think about (winning) until halfway through when there was no one around me.” Noah received a large trophy as a reward for his win. Other competitors in the 5K were the Johnson family of Elverson, including David and Susan Johnson and three of their children, Cameron, Celia and Rosa, who attend Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown. “There are six of us and five of us ran the 5K, so it was fun,” said Susan, noting that this was the second time the family took part in the event. “My boss’s parents moved to Tel Hai (Retirement Community) and his mom passed last year, so my boss’s family and (our family) ran it last year in memory of his mom. We enjoyed it and decided to do it again.” In the 1-mile fun run, there were 54 finishers. “All the runners accidentally went off the correct path, so the course was not a full mile this year. So the times are not based on a mile run,” Gregory pointed out. “But they all did have a great run anyway.” Jack McConaghay, 10, from Westbrooke, N.Y., came in first this year with a time of 5:28. His brother Elias McConaghay, 8, came

In third place for the girls was Blythe Blankenbiller, 9, from Hilliard, Ohio, with a time of 8:37. Gregory credited the more than 40 volunteers who made the race a success and the 28 local businesses that sponsored or donated to the race, as well as Second Wind Race Timing. “This year we chipped both the 5K race and the 1-mile children’s fun run,” he noted. “I believe the children enjoyed starting under the big blue arch (put in place by Second Wind) this year.” A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors are available at www.telhaicamp.org/events/turkey -bowl-run. Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory Ministries, he and McCaughn have created “The Moses Project” with the tagline, “For we were once all strangers in a strange land,” a reference to Exodus 2:22. A volunteer meeting will be held in early January, and free two-hour classes for adults who want to learn English are scheduled to begin at the end of January, probably on Thursday evenings. Father and son are working to create the course. “We are buying books and lesson plans,” said McCaughn, who added that The Factory Pantry will be used to help teach adult students about grocery shopping. “We will train and educate people how to shop smart in a supermarket,” said McCaughn. Volunteers will play a critical role by providing listening ears during small group sessions that follow the group lesson. “It won’t just be book learning,” explained McCaughn. “It’s a practical application of conversational English.” Volunteers need not be teachers. “We want people who just want to come help their neighbors learn to speak English,” said McCaughn. Zimmerman believes this is the first time this service will be available in the community for adults. “We are calling those folks out who want (to volunteer) to be part of these (adults’) journey and education (in ESL),” Zimmerman said.

Both McCaughn and Cordero have experience living in places where the native language was not their first language. “I was in the Air Force for 20 years, and I lived all over the world,” said McCaughn. Cordero’s mother, who is from Peru, spoke Spanish to him as a child, and he needed an ESL program to learn English when he entered school. McCaughn said that he understands how hard it is to fit in when you cannot understand your neighbors. “It is so much easier to assimilate to a culture if you can speak the language,” he said. “Even if you speak it poorly, people will respect the effort.” McCaughn learned a number of languages living around the globe. “It was amazing how much I could become a part of my community (once I learned the language),” he said. McCaughn hopes that local residents will volunteer to help for the good of all who live in the Pequea Valley area. “This is a community-based program, started by community members to help our neighbors,” he said. “This is (an) opportunity to be a part of helping your neighbors to live a better and easier life.” Those who would like to volunteer or learn more about the program may call 717-6879594 or email shira@thefactory ministries.com.

Families of Grace Covenant Church in Exton held a shoebox packing party at the church on Nov. 16. Their goal was to pack 100 shoeboxes with gifts of personal care items, craft items, school supplies, and toys for children around the world affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease, as well as for children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. Grace Covenant families participate annually in the outreach effort sponsored by Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization whose mission aims to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities. Grace Covenant Church is located in the Oaklands Corporate Center, 444 Creamery Way, Exton. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch (standing), Penn State Commercial Horticulture extension educator, teaches Farm Food Safety in Spanish to horticulturalists at the Fruit Research Extension Center in Adams County. Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-tounderstand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as personal hygiene, microorganisms, and sources of contamination during, before, and after harvest. The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving pre-existing educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education
available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10 articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service announcement curricula and created a catalog of available information in English and Spanish. With support from stakeholders, the Extension determined where the greatest needs in pro-
gramming were and then developed new educational materials and workshops specific to various industry groups. The team created a number of innovative, new food safety (GAPs) outreach, education, and training programs in English and Spanish, including 11 trainings and professional development with a total of 24 presentations. To find all the newly available resources, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/bilingual -produce-safety-education.

With funding from USDA NIFA award number 201770020-27236, Penn State Extension educators from the Food Safety and Horticulture teams developed bilingual produce safety educational materials and delivered trainings to Latino fresh produce growers and farmworkers in Pennsylvania. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch was the principal investigator of the grant. Other members of the team were Megan Chawner, Tara Baugher, Jeffrey Stoltzfus, Don Seifrit, Christi Graver, professor of food science Dr. Luke LaBorde, and now retired extension educator Lee Stivers. Congress entrusted the FDA to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This new law changed the food safety system from one that responds to contamination to one that aims to prevent it in the first place. Among the suite of new regulations issued under the law is “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (USFDA, 2013), commonly known as the Produce Safety Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory challenges to the fresh produce industry in Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food

Affiliated agents and staff members of Coldwell Banker Preferred gathered at the Marple Sports Arena in Broomall for an evening of games at their second Preflympics to raise funds for the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House (PRMH). As a result of their efforts, the charitable arm of the company, Coldwell Banker Preferred Cares, will present PRMH with a check for more than $5,000 to support its mission of helping families with seriously ill children. The top offices for fundraising were the Media, Blue Bell and Conshohocken offices. The Exton office won the Coldwell Banker Preferred Cares Cup.

Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. No pre-screening is required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. More information is available by calling 717-569-8521.

On Oct. 16, the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC) presented its 2019 Awards for Primary Care Excellence (APEX). The APEX Awards represent the pinnacle of service, quality, innovation, and achievement in primary health care. They are designed to recognize the outstanding efforts of dedicated individuals and teams who work in or volunteer for Pennsylvania’s health centers. A number of area individuals were among the APEX honorees. The Customer Service Excellence Award was presented to Denise LaRosa, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of exemplary customer service to health center patients and colleagues. Dr. Federico Ceppa of La Comunidad Hispana, Kennett Square, received the Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award in recognition of his significant contributions in the delivery of family medicine, improving quality and outcomes of care, to health center patients. The Outstanding Primary Care Clinician Award went to Helen Wooten, Berks Community Health Center (BCHC), Reading, in recognition of her 20 years of behavioral health expertise and leadership, especially the recent development and growth of BCHC’s medication assisted treatment program, a program developed in response to the opiate epidemic. Dr. Robert Little of Hamilton Health Center, Harrisburg, received the Board Excellence & Service Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment throughout the 50-year history of the health center as a founding physician. He served 35 of those years as a member of the board of directors. Eric Beamesderfer, also of Hamilton Health Center, received the Career Achievement Award in recognition of his years of work in various information technology (IT) roles at the health center resulting in his advancement to IT director. The Innovation Award was awarded to Amy Carr, Lancaster Health Center, Lancaster, in recognition of her successful management of the implementation of a technology solution and workflow processes to handle both the triage and after-hours call processes, as well as an audit process to ensure it was effective. Dr. Catherine Mauss, Family First Health, York, received the Patient Choice Award in recognition of her dedication to providing comprehensive, quality care and impacting the life, health, and well-being of the patients she serves. PACHC is a statewide membership services organization representing community health centers and other safety net providers that care for nearly 900,000 Pennsylvanians at more than 300 delivery sites in rural and urban communities across the state. Readers may visit www.pachc.org for more information.
