LanChester Chorus to present holiday concert

Holiday tunes like “Silver Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” as well as religious hymns, including “Mary, How Could You Have Known?” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” will be featured at a Christmas concert to be presented by the LanChester Chorus on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana.

The chorus, which gets its name from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties, will be led by director Kimberly Kusnersyk. The accompanist will be Christine Smith.

Light refreshments, including cookies and punch, will be served after the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received.

and “Ding Dong Merrily on High.” “We do a mixture of religious and sacred music - familiar songs and some that are not quite as familiar. It’s always nice to hear something new,” said Kusnersyk. “We will also do a Grinch medley.”

According to a history of the chorus, the group has

been meeting in Christiana for the past 74 years. The group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffett and Richard Wright. Wright served as accompanist and business manager for the chorus from 1950 through 2008. In addition to Moffett, the

For the concert, the fire hall’s banquet room will be festively decorated by members of the chorus with poinsettias and greens. Members will dress formally for the occasion. “The men wear dark suits and red ties, and the ladies wear black with red scarves,” noted Kusnersyk. “It’s a mixed choral group - alto, soprano, bass and tenor - and a mixture of ages. They sing very well. Most of them have sung in their church choirs or other choirs. They have a musical background.”

In addition to the songs already mentioned, music will include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,”

Family continues to spread awareness about CO danger

Even though it has been 10 years since the death of Carly Imbierowicz, who died of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, her family remains vigilant in its efforts to educate the public about the danger of CO and to provide CO detectors to people in need through the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation.

The foundation is named for the daughter of Donna and Matt Imbierowicz, who passed away at the age of 16 on Nov. 22, 2014, along with her friend Daulton Pointek, 17. They died

from carbon monoxide poisoning in a vehicle as they drove home from a movie.

At the time, both Carly and Daulton were students at Octorara Junior-Senior High School.

During November, which was Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation launched the “Operation Save A Family - Save A Pet” initiative, asking the public to donate new CO detectors, which will be distributed by the Cochranville Fire Company. Financial donations are also being accepted, which will be used to purchase additional detectors. Those who would like to make a donation to the effort may visit the foundation’s website, http:// www.cmiawareness.org.

“Our goal is to collect and distribute 250 CO detectors by the end of the year,” said Donna. “Operation Save A Family - Save A Pet is a program where CO detectors are donated to fire houses.

Cochranville Fire Company (members) were the first responders to (Carly and Daulton’s) accident.

Cochranville takes (the CO detectors) into communities. They determine where they are needed.”

Donna is also working on donating CO detectors to the Keystone Valley Fire Department in Parkesburg for distribution at The Parkesburg POINT Youth Center.

The Imbierowicz family has been donating CO detectors to the Cochranville Fire Company for the past three years and plans to continue that effort. In November, the family

supplied 118 detectors that were donated by Lowe’s in Avon Grove, where Donna works.

Members of the Imbierowicz family, including Donna and Matt and Carly’s brother, Andy, along with family friends Jenna Dowling and Emma, Maggi and Annie Arriviello, presented the donations to Judah Kocher, assistant fire chief, and Doug Lapp, deputy fire chief.

The family also brought along Foxy, an English mastiff, which is the offspring of Carly’s dog, Malachi. Foxy was presented with a fire company T-shirt. The family bred Malachi in memory of Carly, nicknaming Malachi’s 11 puppies as CO Awareness Angels. Those who adopted the dogs agreed to share Carly’s story.

Donna said that creating the foundation is a way to honor Carly’s memory and provide an important service in the community.

“It’s hard especially this time of year because it is near the anniversary (of Carly’s death),” said Donna. “(These efforts are) part of healing process. We are trying to keep her spirit alive.”

According to www.cmi awareness.org, carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because it does not have an odor. Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure include dizziness, headache, fatigue or weakness, coughing, irregular breathing, chest pain and disorientation. However, CO poisoning is preventable. In the case of Carly and Daulton,

Participating in the donation of CO detectors at the Cochranville Fire Company are (from left) Andy Imbierowicz, Maggie Arriviello, Matt Imbierowicz, Donna Imbierowicz, Jenna Dowling, Emma Arriviello, Annie Arriviello, Judah Kocher and Doug Lapp.

directors over the years have included Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickel and Bill Young.

Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. The group has performed several times at the White House during its Christmas tours and at the Kennedy Center. The chorus performed at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and at the open house at the governor’s mansion.

The chorus has sung the

national anthem numerous times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Stormers.

In the summer, the group performed evening concerts at the Convention Hall in Cape May, N.J., and for many years it presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J.

The chorus also sings at local retirement communities and the Christmas concert every December at the Christiana Fire Company. “We do this annually as our Christmas gift to the community,” said Joan Esworthy, who has been a member of the chorus for more than 20 years.

Next year, the group will celebrate its 75th anniversary, and it is planning special events. “For the 75th anniversary, previous members will come back and sing, and we will do a program based on some of the older music the chorus did years ago,” Kusnersyk explained. “I have programs that date to 1964 of what music they sang. We will go retro and to do a retro program.”

She added that the chorus previously performed in the old fire hall in Christiana, which is now where the borough’s municipal offices are located. “They had fire engines in the room, and they took them out (for the concert),” she recalled. “That room had the best acoustics.”

Kusnersyk was a member of the LanChester Chorus before being named its director about 20 years ago. “I was a choir director for 20 to 25 years, and my mother was before that. It was a natural progression,” she said. “I don’t have a musical degree; I learned by doing.”

The chorus is always in need of additional singers. There are no formal auditions. However, anyone interested in joining the group is asked to email kkusnersyk@yahoo.com for more information.

a broken exhaust pipe allowed the CO gas to enter the car through the passenger air vents. The teenagers did not know there was CO entering the car, and they died within minutes.

To prevent CO poisoning in vehicles, it is recommended that people have their car’s exhaust system and mufflers inspected regularly and maintained. Also, people should not warm up their vehicle in the garage with the garage door down or partially

down. On snowy days, vehicle owners should remove snow or ice that might be blocking the vehicle’s tail pipe. Those who are stuck in traffic or sitting in the car when it is idling should partially open a window. Finally, battery-operated CO detectors are available that can be placed in cars and trucks.

The website also offers tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in homes.

Homeowners should have their home heating system inspected regu -

larly. Generators or other gasoline-powered engines should never be run inside the home. Always make sure the vents on fireplaces are open when burning a fire. Chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year. All homes should have battery-powered CO detectors. Like smoke detectors, batteries in CO detectors should be checked in the spring and fall of each year. For additional tips or to learn more about the foundation, visit the previously mentioned website.

Focusing on youth engagement, public trust, and recruitment, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has stepped up its community policing efforts, including presence at more community events and the creation of public interaction events like Cupcakes with a Cop and Barbershop Conversations.

In addition to the Cupcakes with a Cop program, held in partnership with Dia Doce Cupcakes and the West Chester Police Department, and Barbershop Conversations, held with Another Level Barbershop, CCSO deputies and staff members have created youth-focused initiatives. Benching with Badges invites student-athletes throughout the county to join deputies in fitness activities to encourage

Giant announces hunger relief efforts

To help families in need enjoy a holiday meal, the Giant Company is focusing its giving efforts this season on hunger relief efforts, recently announcing donations of $160,000 and 3,000 hams to organizations addressing food insecurity in their local communities.

The Giant Company donated $100,000 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank on Dec. 3, Giving Tuesday, in support of its hunger relief efforts. The gift will help the food bank provide 400,000 fresh, healthy, nutritious meals to neighbors experiencing hunger in its 27-county service region in Pennsylvania. The food bank is now providing food assistance to more than 250,000 individuals each month. This includes individuals; families; active-duty service members and veterans via its MilitaryShare program; seniors via its ElderShare program; and youths via its in-school, after-school and summer programs.

Additionally, the Giant

Company is supporting the Salvation Army’s holiday hunger relief programs by donating $5,000 to 12 Salvation Army locations for a total donation of $60,000.

Recipient Salvation Army locations in Pennsylvania include Boyertown, Carlisle, Chambersburg, East Stroudsburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, Levittown, Norristown, Philadelphia and Sunbury,

as well as the Winchester, Va., location.

Lastly, to ensure families have a holiday staple at their table, the Giant Company is contributing 3,000 hams to 15 food banks and pantries across its operating area this month. Local recipients are Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; Chester County Food Bank, Exton; Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, Reading; and

Lancaster County Food Hub, Lancaster.

Customers can also join the Giant Company to make a difference this holiday season. Through Tuesday, Dec. 24, customers at any Giant, Martin’s or Giant Heirloom Market store can donate free ham certificates at the register in-store to a local food bank. In addition, customers can purchase reusable bags to benefit regional food banks.

County lifts burn ban

Chester County’s burn ban is no longer in effect, following approval on Dec. 9 by Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz and Eric Roe. The vote by the commissioners to lift the ban was made at a specially scheduled public meeting following the recommendation of Chester County Department of Emergency Services director Bill Messerschmidt.

The commissioners approved Resolution BOC-58-24, rescinding the extended burn ban enacted by the commissioners on Nov. 20. The lifting of the ban was made possible by a period of wet weather.

Chester County first announced a 30-day burn ban for open fires on Oct. 27 and subsequently extended the ban. Minimal amounts of measurable precipitation - less than three days out of 60 - led to a high level of fire danger and sustained drought conditions. Even with the burn ban in place from Oct. 27, the county experienced 166 brush fires, 73 mulch and trash fires, and one civilian fire death resulting from a brush fire.

CCSO

from pg 9

aimed at mitigating negative stereotypes centered around the relationship between youths and law enforcement.

The CCSO has also expanded its digital reach, launching Instagram and X pages in addition to its Facebook presence.

Public education is another priority of the CCSO. This focus includes co-hosting events like the Gun Safety Seminar with the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, and a Gun Violence Prevention Webinar alongside state Rep. Chris Pielli and CeaseFirePA. Two pilot programs are also in the planning stages: Shear Hope is a domestic violence prevention program aimed at providing domestic violence education and resources to survivors, and a Digital Footprints seminar will aim to help students and parents protect their online presence.
