Beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s graced last year’s New Year’s Day charity motorcycle ride along the Susquehanna River, and organizers are crossing their fingers for more of the same this time around. “Last year we raised over $35,000, and it was our biggest year for the amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf.

Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not so lucky, depending on the weather - honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and

Registration will open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2020, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy, with the ride taking off at 1 p.m. beyond in past years. of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m. at Post 185. Breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. Vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts, sweatshirts, and patches for vests. “Before the ride, we say the Pledge of Allegiance, and with that many people there Main Street just becomes completely quiet,” Stumpf shared. Approximately 475 bikes rode in last year’s event. One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first mile dressed in a baby costume. That rider has the honor of selecting next year’s Baby New Year. “This year we have our first female Baby New Year,” Stumpf noted. Elizabethtown resident

About 150 veterans are receiving ongoing dental care through Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM). State Sen. Andy Dinniman recently visited the nonprofit organization to recognize its second annual Give Veterans a Smile Day, an event focused on providing free dental care to underinsured or uninsured veterans who

visited. A range of services were offered, from cleanings and fillings to extractions and X-rays. Fifty-two veterans were scheduled to receive dental care, and an additional 10 veterans were served with walk-in appointments. That is a more than 50% increase from 2018, the event’s inaugural year, when CVIM provided free dental care services to 40 veterans. Alberta Landis, vice president of dental services at CVIM, said that nearly 150 veterans have made CVIM their dental home and can come for a checkup every six months. Landis also

explained that while most veterans receive medical coverage and benefits, some are not eligible for or cannot afford dental care. CVIM’s mission is to provide compassionate medical and dental care and health education to people who live or work in the Chester County region who lack access to insurance in order to support their goals. Since the nonprofit organization opened in 1998, it has expanded its efforts to meet the needs of a growing community. In the past year, 480 professional volunteers, many of whom are licensed doctors, nurses, and specialists, dedicated 56,000 hours to serve more than 4,200 patients in 45,830 visits.

State Sen. Andy Dinniman (right) recently helped Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) celebrate its Give Veterans a Smile Day. Dinniman visited with (from left) Dr. Linda Himmelberger (left), CVIM volunteer, and Alberta Landis, vice president of dental services at CVIM.

to honor veterans. People are also welcome to pay for admission to the meal and after-ride festivities. Businesses interested in making a contribution toward the fundraiser for veterans may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

Apprenticeship Grants Offered The Pre-Apprentice and Apprenticeship Grant Program helps cover expenses for technical or academic instruction that complements onthe-job training in registered apprenticeship programs. The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development is currently accepting grant applications from sponsors of registered apprenticeships. Sponsors may request up to $3,000 per apprentice annually for a maximum of three years. For full program guidelines and to apply, readers may visit http://dced.pa.gov and search for “Pre-Apprentice and Apprenticeship Grant Program.” Questions may be directed to Gwen Ross at 717720-7386.

December 25, 2019 - 5

Winter began on Dec. 21 and extends to Thursday, March 19, 2020, in the Northern Hemisphere. Those three months can be both beautiful to behold and difficult to endure. Winter has its share of safety hazards, and extra effort may be required to protect one’s health and well-being when the chill creeps in. In recognition of that, the National Safety Council and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these winter safety tips. 1. Homes should be winterized to keep interior temperatures comfortable and prevent weather-related damage. Winterizing includes insulating water lines that run along exterior walls, cleaning out gutters, installing weather stripping, and replenishing insulation. 2. Exercise in cold temperatures can put many people at risk of heart attack - especially those who are typically inactive. If someone must exercise in cold weather, they should remember to stretch beforehand. People should take breaks when shoveling or ask for help. 3. Carbon monoxide alarms should be checked to see if they are working properly. Every year in the United States, more than 400 people die from and 50,000 are treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. Exhaust from improperly vented heating appliances can contribute to carbon monoxide sickness. 4. A winter emergency kit should be prepared and kept in the car in case a car becomes stranded in inclement weather. The kit can include food, water, blankets, first aid supplies, flares, and booster cables, among other items. 5 . Individuals should wear appropriate clothing for the temperature and precipitation. Layers can be added or removed as needed. 6 . Sand or cat litter can be spread on icy patches of walkways to improve traction. Sand or cat litter is easier on the environment than some chemical ice melt products. 7. Homeowners should consider a whole-house generator as an emergency backup if the power goes out in winter. Generators can keep the heat running and the refrigerator humming along until power is restored. 8. Caution should be exercised with space heaters and other supplemental heating devices. They should be turned off when leaving the room. They should not be left on overnight while people are sleeping. 9. Drivers should slow down when driving in the snow. Black ice patches can be difficult to see, and snow itself can reduce tire traction. Drivers should leave extra time to get where they need to be. 1 0 . When outdoors, people should consider switching from gloves to mittens. With fingers touching each other inside mittens, they help generate more body heat than when they are inside gloves.

Donors May Reap Rewards notes that, in the United States, taxpayers can deduct donations made to qualified charities. Such deductions must be itemized, but they can greatly reduce a person’s taxable income. Laws regarding donations and tax deductions can be difficult to understand, so donors should always discuss their donations

with their financial planners or tax preparers before filing their returns. Some general information regarding donations and deductions that can be useful to prospective donors follows. In the United States, donations must go to one of three types of groups in order to qualify for deductions. Donations

made to nonprofit religious groups, nonprofit educational groups, and nonprofit charitable groups, which are often referred to as 501(c)(3) organizations, may qualify for deductions. Noncash donations are also eligible for deductions in the United States. In most instances in the United States, charitable organizations must provide donors with certain information in order for donations to be deducted. A receipt that indicates the organization’s name and address and the date and location of the donation must be submitted. In addition, it must include the amount of the donation when donating cash or, in the case of noncash donations, a reasonably detailed description of the items donated. Donating to charity is a selfless endeavor that may lead to rewards when donors file their tax returns.

DVCCC provides a hotline and counseling services for victims of domestic violence, housing options, legal help and education and training. More information about the organization is available at www.dvcccpa.org. Grace Covenant Church is located in the Oaklands Corporate Center at 444 Creamery Way, Exton. Preparing The Home For Guests Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends and family. Entertaining can include everything from backyard barbecues to hosting formal dinner parties to providing overnight accommodations. While each of those things is different, hosts always want to ensure their guests are as comfortable as possible, regardless of which style of gathering they are hosting. Hosts can use these seven strategies to help guests feel at home. 1. Consider the details. Does your guest like chocolate covered almonds? Does he or she prefer a certain genre of music? Hosts can take note of the specific details that make the guest tick and then incorporate them into their entertaining plans. 2 . Not everyone has a fullfledged guest room, but that does not mean a welcoming and private retreat for guests cannot be

created. A home office can be turned into an overnight area with a pull-out couch or even a dressed-up air mattress with high-quality linens. 3. Hosts should try to anticipate guests’ needs and think like a concierge when hosting at home. Hosts should have extra toothbrushes, antiperspirant, mouthwash, and a phone charger at the ready. If the guest is a reader, a few selections should be placed nearby or a book of puzzles so they can stay busy during their downtime. 4 . It is important to keep dietary needs in mind. Guests have different palates and preferences, but some may have serious food allergies as well. It is important to ask in advance if any guests have food allergies, so the host can ensure that any meals served are not just delicious, but also safe and healthy. 5. Guests may not be as enam-

ored with pets as their hosts. If you know a guest has an allergy or an aversion to pets, the animals should be kept away as much as possible. 6 . Hosts are encouraged to take a moment and freshen their home by taking inventory of their home in its current state and making some minor improvements. Hosts can add some interior lighting, clean the bathrooms, create some extra seating, and freshen up with some flowers to make for a welcoming environment. 7. A special meal should be prepared. Hosts can strive to give guests a sensational meal they are not likely to forget. This can mean indulging a little with sourced ingredients, home cooking, and a good bottle of wine. Comfort should always be a priority when readying a home for guests.

Giving to charity is a selfless act that is worthy of recognition. That recognition can come in many forms, and donors should know that even the “tax man” likes to reward men and women who donate to charity. The United States rewards donors with tax credits. The financial services firm H&R Block

Scouts Mark 100 Years The Chester County Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) marked its 100th anniversary with its annual Chester County Camporee at Hibernia County Park in Coatsville on Oct. 29. State Sen. Andy Dinniman joined the more than 2,500 attendees, including 1,800 young people involved in Scouting, to mark the milestone anniversary. Dinniman presented a special Senate citation in honor of the event to David Hohl, BSA Council commissioner; Jeff Spencer, BSA Scout executive; and David Maxwell, president of the board of directors. The event featured camping, fishing, archery, and other activities, including craft-making, state park booths, food trucks, and a Chopped-style food competition between troops were all featured over the weekend-long celebration, as well as many opportunities for Scouts to earn merit badges. The new Program, Activity, and Resource Campus is under construction. Once complete, it will include more than 25 acres of land for outdoor activities, as well as a large indoor complex with space for meetings, classes, and events. The campus will also offer expansive outdoor activities including camping and campfires, fishing, wetlands management, playing fields, fitness activities, hiking and biking trails, ropes and obstacle courses, an observation tower, a climbing wall, open and wooded training areas, and a potential link to the Chester Valley Trail System. In total, Dinniman secured $295,000 in state funding to establish and support the new campus, located on Route 30 in West Whiteland, near the Exton Square Mall. The Chester County Council of the BSA partners with community organizations that charter 168 Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout See BSA pg 8

It is also important for drivers to know the difference between a weather watch and warning. A watch means there is increased risk of a hazardous weather event, but its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain. Drivers should pay attention to forecasts and plan out what they will do if or when it occurs. A warning means the weather event is imminent or is happening. People should take immediate action to protect lives and property. In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues “Snow Squall Warnings,” which alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these dangerous squalls. For more information on PennDOT’s winter preparations and

additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.PennDOT.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com. During the winter, motorists can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 950 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a free smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.

ate about helping the homeless, instead of entering “charities for the homeless” into the search engine, search for “highly rated charities for the homeless.” Such a search may uncover red flags about certain organizations and direct donors to the most reputable charity possible. A charity should be vetted before donating. Transparency is important when choosing a charity. A charity should willingly share information such as how donation dollars are spent and the programs that have been established to help it meet its mission. Such information should be readily available on the organization’s website. The FTC recommends donors learn how much of their donations will be used to provide direct support to the programs. The

FTC also recommends being suspicious of charities that do not provide detailed information about their missions and programs. Vetting charities is important, but donors should not feel like they have to do all that legwork on their own. Various organizations, including Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch, exist to protect donors and ensure they give wisely. Local government regulators also may be able to provide information about charities to help donors avoid fraud. Charitable donations help millions of people every day. Donors can protect themselves and ensure their money is used wisely by doing their homework before giving to nonprofit organizations.

Donating To Charity Wisely Donations from private citizens are the lifeblood of many nonprofit organizations. Without donations from millions of well-intentioned individuals, many charities would not be able to fulfill their missions. When donating to charitable organizations, donors typically want to know their donations will make a difference. With a little pre-donation research and a few smart giving strategies, prospective donors can make sure their donations ultimately end up doing the most good. Donors should refine their online searches. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends searching online for a cause one cares about but adding certain terms to the search before choosing a charity. For example, if someone is passion-

driving requires reducing driving speed to well below the posted limit, even in an all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle. If motorists encounter snowor ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. Motorists should prepare for potential bad weather by ensuring they have supplies in their cars before heading out: food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), and Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) recently outlined the commonwealth’s plans for winter services, highlighting the tools the public can use to successfully prepare for the season. This winter, the PTC is prepared to battle the elements as well, with 380 trucks, plows, and salt spreaders and 400 licensed equipment operators ready to activate 24/7 staffing this fall. Its goal is to keep the turnpike system as free of snow and ice as possible, but motorists too have a responsibility to know their own winter driving skills and their vehicle’s performance. Winter storms are a fact of life in Pennsylvania, and drivers should never assume roads will be free of ice and snow during and after a blizzard. Wintertime

Donations come in many forms. Charitable organizations can always benefit from financial donations. But this is not the only way to help a favorite charity. Noncash donations can include everything from clothing to electronics to art and collectibles. In fact, such donations are common. According to the Internal Revenue Service, more than 15 million clothing donations were reported on tax returns in 2016. Many people have items they want to donate to a good cause. But donors might want to do a little legwork before making noncash donations to ensure their generosity does as much good as possible. Donors should determine the usefulness of noncash items. The organization Charity Navigator, which is an evaluator of charities, notes that most charities can only make use of new, unused, or nearly new items. If necessary, donors should work with the charity they hope to donate to so they only drop off items the charity can ultimately utilize. Donors should not give up on items deemed not useful. Just because a charity cannot accept a certain item does not mean the charity cannot ultimately benefit from that item. Items that have too much wear and tear for charities can still be sold, and donors can turn the proceeds from those sales into financial donations to their favorite charities. Items can be sold at garage sales, flea markets, online through websites, or even via the local newspaper classified section. Charity Navigator notes that some organizations offer to pick up large noncash donations, such as furniture. By choosing to donate such items to local charities, donors can save the organizations the potentially costly expense of extensive travel. That means donations go that much further. Donors should accept their tax deduction. There is no shame in accepting some goodwill in return for charitable efforts. When donating noncash items, donors should ask for a receipt and any additional forms necessary to claim a tax deduction. Noncash donations can be as valuable to charitable organizations as cash donations, especially when donors take the time to ensure they donate only those items organizations can use.
