Loretta McClarigan, a teacher at St. John’s Preschool Learning Center, located in St. John’s United Methodist Church, 3001 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, has been working with children for a long time. One special holiday project that McClarigan has made a St. John’s tradition is creating gingerbread houses with students and parents each December. “Some (students) make light posts, pretzel fences, sidewalks with cereal, or candy cane sleds for the gummy bear (inhabitants) to ride,” observed McClarigan, who oversees the children with assistant Jane Horst. This year, on Dec. 18 and 19, the 26 students, including a class of 3-year-olds and a class of 4- and 5-year-olds, along with parents and grandparents, spent time building the See Gingerbread Houses pg 2

Area residents may give a unique gift and support the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA) by purchasing a personalized brick for the borough’s dog park. Bricks can be engraved with the buyer’s name, a favorite pet’s name or a slogan. Bricks will be included in the paving of the dog park vestibule in the spring. To be sure everyone has a chance to get their order in, brick sales have been extended to Monday, Dec. 31. Earlier this year, the new dog park opened at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., Oxford. The park has sections for small and large dogs, interesting obstacles for canines to explore and raised bed gardens in the secure vestibule. To provide solid footing, the entrance area will be bricked this spring when weather permits. To cover the cost of the project and continuing maintenance costs related to the dog park, OARA is offering everyone a chance to purchase the personalized bricks that will be included in the paving. Each standard-sized brick can be engraved with a message up to four lines of print, with each line containing up to 21 characters, including spaces. Organizers note that the bricks could be a nice
homemade Christmas cookies, cheese and crackers, and fruit brought by parents. “(We had) hot chocolate too,” noted McClarigan. An emphasis on the spirit of Christmas is a part of the annual activity. “We have a bulletin board up that says, ‘Christmas is the time for caring and sharing,’” said McClarigan. “We try to (extend) that over into (the message that) every day is for caring and sharing.” St. John’s Preschool Learning Center serves more than 30 children. Classes are provided five days per week from September until late May. Readers who would like more information may call 717-687-6711.

Gummy bears are (the student’s) favorite,” noted McClarigan, who added that the parent/child interaction inherent in the activity is important, but that the annual event also aims to foster creativity, constructing, and sharing. “We start with a small milk carton, cut graham crackers to just the right sizes, and then ‘glue’ (them) to (the milk) carton using icing,” said McClarigan. According to Horst, the secret to successful gingerbread house making is the sticky frosting made at the preschool using a mix for powdered meringue. A few weeks prior to the project, parents signed up to bring in a variety of cereals, colored candies, gumdrops, pretzels, candy canes, marshmallows, and other edible items to decorate the houses. Leaman explained that at Christmastime, the Chester County sing-along covers all of the first part, sections of the second part and excerpts of the third part of the score. A Lancaster County sing-along is also offered at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster during the Easter season. That program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. During the “Hallelujah” chorus, the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Both performances are open to anyone who wants to sing or listen. The timing of the events is designed not to interfere with Christmas and Easter schedules and to occur when professional musicians are less busy. At the event on Dec. 28, Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie will provide American Sign Language interpretation at Stevens’ suggestion. “The signers are really important,” said Leaman. “It started

She noted that the closest support groups to the Oxford area are in Kennett Square and Elkton, Md. “One of the things we’ve been trying to identify with the parish is what niches or what places in the community are not being served,” St. Christopher’s pastor Mary Ann Mertz said. “To have a support group for the caregivers of people who have Alzheimer’s and dementia, that’s huge.” The caregivers group is open to everyone, is not a faith-based organization and is completely confidential. “It’s for anyone who is taking care of
employees at the Chester County Government Services Center and at the 313 West Market Street Building. “During their lunch hour, (employees) visit with (Lily) in the training room. People come in and they don’t want to leave,” Alakszay stated. She noted that Lily also visited with students from West Chester University. “Places like West Chester University and Drexel (University) have office hours for stress relief dogs. During exam week, students secure time to come out,” she explained. Most recently, Lily visited the Chester Springs Library to read with young children as part of the Tail Wag-

Lily and her owner also visit elementary schools upon request. “(One school had) two students who had bullying issues, and they were afraid to come to school,” Alakszay said. “The kids hung out with the dog for six weeks, and it made a world of difference. It was amazing how these kids turned around and are now able to communicate through interaction with a dog.” She explained that during the sessions, students learned to discuss their fears. “They (discussed) things Lily was afraid of and how she deals with that, and (then) the kids talked about what they were afraid of,” said Alakszay. “The dog
was their role model.” Alakszay explained that Lily is not a service dog but is a certified therapy dog that provides emotional support. “Service dogs are trained and handed over to someone who has a disability,” she said, noting that facilities like Canine Partners for Life train service dogs. “She is trained to hang out with you and help you go through some of life’s bumps. Just by petting a dog, it decreases blood pressure. For kids, it creates a safe environment.” Alakszay said that Lily is certified through Therapy Dogs International. “Therapy Dogs were the folks that provided stress relief dogs after 9/11,” she noted. Nonprofit Organizations from pg 1 The Whitford Charitable Fund Committee and representatives of 10 Chester County organizations attended a luncheon at the Whitford Country Club in November to celebrate the success of the eighth annual Whitford Classic Event in September. More than $130,000 was distributed to this year’s beneficiaries, which included Safe Harbor of Chester County, West Side Community Center, Uptown Entertainment, Lasata Farm, Coatesville Area Senior Center, CVIM: Smiles for Jackie, Downingtown Library, Phoenixville Area Children’s Learning Center, Great Valley Community Organization and North Star of Chester County.
Whitford Country Club members gathered together on a weekend in September to raise funds at their event. A morning round robin tennis tournament for ladies kicked off the weekend. Among the other activities was the Friday night gala held at Whitford Country Club. Members, friends and guests from the beneficiary organizations danced to live music, enjoyed food and participated in silent and live auctions. On Saturday, the golf sponsors’ event featured 124 golfers. The Pro-Am on Sunday was canceled, but members and participating PGA professionals enjoyed lunch and the Eagles’ victory. John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laid-back and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20
teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation

take up to three years, noting that Lily has earned her American Kennel Club (AKC) K9 Good Citizenship certificate and the Good Community Dog certificate. “I’m proud of her. One of the exams that we went through to be certified was a two-hour test,” Alakszay recalled. “She had to walk through crowds and avoid food that they put down. She had to walk
past another dog, and they had to ignore each other. Out of 15 dogs, only five passed that day.” Alakszay pointed out that one of Lily’s favorite places to visit is the Barclay Friends senior living facility in West Chester. “Depending on where they are with Alzheimer’s or dementia, (the residents) come to life when they see her. It is
from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas - is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports need-based scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a ed eight years ago by a few members who wanted to create an opportunity to give something back to the community in which they work, play and raise their families. To date, the Whitford Charitable Fund has granted a total of more than $900,000 to local nonprofits. The Whitford Charitable Fund’s mission is to “connect people who care with causes that matter.” The Whitford Charitable Fund is a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation. The Chester County Community Foundation works to connect people who care with causes that matter, so their legacy philanthropy makes a difference. The foundation holds nearly $60 million in trust and annually awards $2.5 million in grants and scholarships. For more infor-
presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlapp volleyball.weebly.com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball” at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019. very gratifying,” she added. Since she has a full-time job, Alakszay said she tries to visit as many places as possible as her schedule allows. “From now to the end of the year, we have about a dozen requests,” she said. “I love animals and I love helping people, so it’s a really nice mesh.” Those who feel that their dog has the right temperament to become a therapy dog may visit www.dtccc.org/advanced/CGC -Therapy.htm for more information.

As part of the formal review of Chester County’s strategic plan, Chester County commissioners recently announced the results of a citizen survey, undertaken as part of the review process for the strategic plan’s next five years. Results of the Chester County Quality of Life Survey, conducted by West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research during September, are based on a random sample of 1,256 responses, evenly represented from all areas of Chester County. The results provide a comparison to the citizens’ surveys undertaken in 2009 and 2013, which helped form the basis of the commissioners’ strategic plan goals. In 2018, residents continue to give Chester County high ratings in terms of it being an excellent or good place to raise a family (94 percent) and nine out of 10 (91 percent) rate it as an excellent or good place to obtain a good education. The survey reported a significant increase in those who found the county an
“excellent or good” place to find a good job (moving from 62 percent in 2013 to 79 percent in 2018). The percentage of residents describing Chester County as a better place to live increased from 25 percent in 2013 to 33 percent in 2018. Open space, scenery, and rural areas continue to be noted by respondents as the best thing about life in Chester County, and this year’s survey highlighted “maintenance of water quality” and “providing quality services while maintaining low taxes” as the two most important issues facing Chester County. For questions about the importance of issues facing Chester County, the top three results stating “most important or one of the most important” were maintaining the quality of water (83 percent), providing quality services while maintaining low taxes (81 percent), and the preservation of open space (77 percent). The issue of growth and land development in the

Thanks to record-breaking donations of deer meat from Pennsylvania hunters, generous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth. Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991. The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations. With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free. During the 2017-18 season, a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the commonwealth. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event. The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters. HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state. HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program. Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Pennsylvanians can also donate money to the Buck for the Pot campaign, which supports HSH. For more information on Hunters Sharing the Harvest, readers may visit www.sharedeer.org. county (55 percent) moved up in importance from the 2013 survey level of 42 percent. As in the two previous surveys, emergency services and the 911 system remain the most important services available to Chester County residents. Eighty-five percent of survey respondents claimed that emergency services and the 911 system are “very important” (up from 81 percent in 2013), and 77 percent confirmed that they would be very willing or somewhat willing to pay more county taxes for emergency services and the 911 system (up from 71 percent in 2013). In addition to “quality of life” questions, the citizen survey addresses the performance of county employees. Of all residents surveyed in 2018, 38 percent indicated that they had contact with county employees in the past 12 months. Residents who rated employee responsiveness as “excellent” continued to increase - from 40 percent in 2009 to 48 percent in 2013 to 50 percent in 2018. County employee courteousness was rated as excellent or good by nine out of 10 respondents. When asked what kind of job the county is doing in specific areas, the 2018 survey noted that 86 percent of respondents believe that the county is doing an excellent or good job at maintaining county parks, followed by ensuring public safety (82 percent) and preventing epidemics or public health hazards (81 percent). A summary of the Chester County Quality of Life Survey may be viewed on www.chesco.org.
