Parkesburg Community Day Set For July 7

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry The fifth annual Parkesburg Community Day will be held on Saturday, July 7, from 3 to 9 p.m., rain or shine, at Minch Park, 400 W. St., Parkesburg. A large tent will be set up on-site, but everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Attendees may relax and enjoy the music of two classic rock bands, Syde 2 and 74/75. The event will also feature an appearance by the Phillies Phanatic. Attendees may enjoy their own picnic lunches or choose from the selection of food that will be available for purchase at the park. “The local baseball league is (selling) hotdogs and hamburgers, and the VFW Post 4480 will have roast beef sandwiches and pork sandwiches,” said Jack Assetto, Parkesburg special events committee president. He noted that there will also be an area serving specialty beverages for attendees age 21 and older. Another popular attraction will be the antique and classic car show, with some unusual vehicles expected to appear this year. “We’ll have (a variety of) cars on display and some real classic cars. The new Porsche restoration business in Parkesburg is going to have several antique Porsches on display,” Assetto said.

For youngsters, a number of children’s contests, games and activities will be available. Children and youths will also have an opportunity to view an equipment display by Parkesburg’s Keystone Valley Fire Department. “We’ll have a display by the fire company, but we won’t have the firefighter challenge this year,” Assetto noted. “There will be a lot of activities all day long.” More than 20 vendors will set up shop, plus booths with useful information from state representatives and state senators will be on-site, along with churches and nonprofit agencies. “We invite all of the nonprofits and the churches to participate,” Assetto said. The big feature will come at the end of the day when a fireworks display is presented at approximately 9 p.m. The annual event is a production of the Parkesburg Special Events Committee. Proceeds from the Community Day will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations. “So far, (in the first four years) we’ve been able to contribute over $45,000 back into the community. We’re a charitable, nonprofit corporation,” Assetto said. Minch Park is located along West Street between West Second and West Fourth avenues. For more information, readers may visit www.parkesburg.org. ■

First Ave., Parkesburg, recently kicked off a fundraising campaign, “Building for the Future.” According to w w w. k v f d 8 .c o m , monies raised will be used for a major renovation project at the main station. The project will include bringing the historic office building into compliance with all modern ADA and code requirements, including installing new HVAC, wiring, insulation, fire alarms and sprinklers. In addition, the engine bay at the station will be demolished because of its failing foundation, and a new foundation and bay area will be constructed to accommodate six vehicles. The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $3 million, and the department is currently

Additionally, KVFD has established a partnership with the Parkesburg Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 4480. With the VFW’s assistance, the fire company will construct a new Veteran’s Memorial Garden in front of the building. The area will honor all local veterans who have died in every major conflict, as well as recognize local firefighters who have lost lives in the line of duty.

An artist’s rendering shows what the Keystone Valley Fire Department in Parkesburg will look like after a planned renovation project. The garden will also include a 9/11 memorial to recognize those who perished during the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The partnership includes a brick campaign. Community members are invited to purchase engraved bricks that will be placed in the new courtyard of the memorial.
