Charlotte Lapp, who oversees the Lifeways for Kids program, which provides weekend food blessings for students who qualify for free and reducedcost lunches in Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), with Marie Kurtz, has been volunteering with the program for more than five years. Three years ago when she began working in one of the PVSD elementary schools, she became more aware of the importance of the program. “I work as an aide, commented Lapp. “Through working at the school, I have a better sense of the needs. As part of the program, Lapp, Kurtz, and a number of other volunteers from about five area churches gather at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville, each Wednesday at 9 a.m. from October through the end of the school year to See Lifeways For Kids pg 6

When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible dedicated to the story of a woman, should have a female perspective. With that in mind, he brought in Heather Grayberg to direct and choreograph, along with an all-female creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. “Ruth will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at

member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served. Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital. “She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States. “GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey,

who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings. “All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.” Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said. Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained. “There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent. Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the

Tree Recycling from pg 1 County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class. Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and get togethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse. within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).” From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes. “This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.”

Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said. As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances. “There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said. about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. “Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover things

that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community,” said Yohe. “This documentary really digs into the addiction piece of technology. It talks about how we spend a lot of time connected and feeling more disconnected than ever.” GOTR programs combine running with an interactive curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,” she said. The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions. To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel will consist of a child psychologist, a Millersville University communications major, a technology

expert, a local pediatrician, and a local school administrator. GOTR board members Katie Sandoe and Robin Sarrat will serve as moderators. The presentation will not end with the panel discussion, however. GOTR has partnered with the Lancaster County Community Foundation on the event, and May Renner of the foundation will close the evening with a visioning exercise. The film trailer features a number of people, many of them young women, talking about their connection to technology. One admits to having an unhealthy relationship with her phone, while another states that her parents say she is addicted to her phone. Evidence that technology usage affects the same parts of the brain that respond when a person falls in love is presented. “The documentary discusses how much of our time we spend connected to a device,” said Yohe, who noted that calls to action for audience members will be part of the discussion. “We would like them to walk away continuing the See GOTR pg 6

Lancaster Mennonite (LM) Middle School and High School students were joined by three foresters on Oct. 30 to plant 350 native trees along the banks of the Mill Stream, which runs through Lancaster Mennonite’s 95-acre campus. Aiding with the project were Marlin Graham, a riparian forest buffer technician with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry; Ryan Davis from the Alliance for the

Chesapeake Bay; and Jason Swartz of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Together they planted approximately 30 native species, including tulip poplar, sweet gum, swamp white oak, river birch, Eastern red cedar, Eastern hemlock, sycamore, silver maple, red maple and Northern red oak. The project, led by LM senior and

Lifeways For Kids from pg 1 pack the bags of food to be sent home on weekends with children who attend Salisbury or Paradise elementary schools. Lifeways for Kids provides sustainable, supplemental food for area students. Currently, the program serves 54 students at Paradise Elementary and 36 at Salisbury Elementary. Lapp and Kurtz, a retired nurse, work to keep the food they provide at a certain nutritional standard. Many of the items included in the pack come from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and others from local grocery stores. Regularly included items may be macaroni and cheese, microwavable meals, soup, noodle dishes, juice, applesauce, granola bars, crackers and cheese, popcorn, and hot chocolate. Recently, the program has expanded to include more than food. “In the fall at the end of October, we give out hygiene kits containing a new towel, a hairbrush, a bar of soap, a container of shampoo, toothpaste, and a toothbrush,” said Lapp. Gesturing to a nearby table stacked high with colorful blankets, she added, “At Christmas, we give a fuzzy blanket and a pair of sweatpants (to children in need).” Working closely with PVSD social workers and nurses, the program also supplies a closet at each school with clothing that the nurse tells Lifeways is needed, such as underwear and socks. As the program coordinates with the PVSD social workers, Lifeways will be helping the district to reach out to the 30 students in the school district who are considered homeless. “When social workers (prepare to visit a home), they can pull items the children need from that closet,” said Lapp, who noted that at one school, a room is being made available to hold clothing and bedding. “We will work alongside them because the programs are similar, and we can brainstorm together,” she said. Volunteers who pack the food spend about an hour a week putting packs together and preparing for the next week’s work. “It does not take long to pack,” said Lapp, who noted that individuals who would like to volunteer may just come to Ridgeview Mennonite at the appointed time or call 717-768-3371 with any questions. Those who would like to make monetary donations may make checks out to Ridgeview and put the words “food pack program” in the memo. Lapp explained that monetary donations are preferred because the program can purchase food for pennies on the dollar through the food bank. The program also accepts donations of doubled plastic grocery bags to send food in.

Tree Recycling from pg 2 drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-2998215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Training from pg 1 YWCA Lancaster will host the Racial Equity Institute, Part I (REI-I), formerly the Racial Justice Institute, at its offices, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, from Friday to Sunday, Jan. 17 to 19. This intensive two-and-a-half-day workshop represents YWCA Lancaster’s core social justice training program. It aims to give participants a common understanding of racism and related concepts. YWCA Lancaster views REI-I as a foundation for working toward dismantling institutional and systemic racism. YWCA Lancaster intends that participants leave the Racial Equity Institute experience equipped with a better understanding of the separate work, experiences, and responsibilities of people of color and white people. Workshop enrollees are introduced to a fundamental anti-racist, multicultural model that can lead to a tangible plan of action for themselves and/or their team. Workshop participants learn through multiple modalities, including journaling, workbooks, exercises, and toolkits. These tools can be used to study, question, and better understand the history, context, and impact of racism on individuals and society. For more details, readers may contact David Nice, project manager, social justice, at dnice@ywcalancaster.org. There is a fee per participant. To register, readers may visit https://ywca lancaster.org/programs/social-Equity/REI/.

Melissa Readman, Board Secretary

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will kick off its 100-year anniversary celebration in 2020 by bringing together volunteers to make 6,500 comforters on one day - Saturday, Jan. 18 - during an event known as The Great Winter Warm-up. Locally, the MCC East Coast office has set an additional goal of collecting 5,000 comforters during January, so events are scheduled before and after Jan. 18. The region has many MCC supporters who donate comforters throughout the year, including members of the Plain community, which spurred the added challenge. The Great Winter Warm-up January events will jump-start MCC’s supply of comforters, which are sent to people in crisis around the world each year. In 2018, MCC sent more than 53,000 comforters as a practical message of love and compassion in the name of Christ. East Coast supporters generated nearly 30,000 of those comforters for MCC’s ministries. During The Great Winter Warm-up events, volunteers are invited to help knot comforters as they celebrate MCC’s centennial. Participants will work together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting and sturdy backing fabric into warm, durable and beautiful comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops have already been sewn together. Events have been scheduled at four locations in Lancaster County. Volunteers may gather on Thursday, Jan. 16, and Monday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Erisman Mennonite Church, 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim. A light supper will be provided. More details are available by contacting Janet Runion Patton at 717-926-4008 or jcpatton99@gmail.com. Helpers may also participate on Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata. A light lunch will be provided. More information is available from Betsy Kennel, who may be reached at 717-733-2847 or Betsy Kennel@mcc.org. Garden Spot Village (Village Square Park), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host an event on Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants may bring a bag lunch or dine at one of the Garden Spot Village restaurants. and up. Preference is for actors and actresses who can sing and play an instrument, but this is not required. Set in the 1930s, this musical tale introduces the members of the singing Sanders family, who, after a five-year hiatus, perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs at a Saturday Night Gospel Sing, where their individual stories and beliefs are shared. Roles for “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf” are for two men, four women, and one flex. In the play, inspector Casey Solved is called to a local church’s bake sale, where a second date nut loaf - in addition to the famous one provided by Lillian “Lil” O’Laydee using

her family’s secret recipe - has shown up. All will be asked to read from a provided script. Those auditioning for the musical should be prepared to sing a oneminute song section of their choice, for which they should bring their own accompanist, or be prepared to sing the first verse of “Amazing Grace.” Those who can play instruments are asked to be prepared to play a one-minute piece of their choice. For more information or to make an auditioning appointment, readers may contact director Doreen Creighton at dcreightn57@gmail.com. Promise Players is a community Christian theater group that performs in support of a local ministry.
