PVIS Teacher Receives PPL Foundation STEM Grant BY ANN MEAD ASH

hen Pequea Valley Intermediate School STEM 8/STEM 8 Advanced teacher Jamiel Smoker received information about a PPL Foundation Empowering Educators grant program from principal John Trovato at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, he looked at the projects the previous winners had submitted. “They had some neat things,” noted Smoker, who thought his idea had a chance. He completed the application by the Sept. 30 due date. In early November, Smoker learned that he was one of 50 teachers across the state to receive a $1,000 grant to spend on equipment and materials for a project. The funds will purchase the instruments needed to teach a cross-curricular lesson involving science, math, and the study of trees. Utilizing a stand of trees located on school property, all eighth-grade students will have the opportunity to take part in the project in a required STEM class.

W

Smoker plans to employ the Pythagorean Theorem to teach students how to discover the height of a tree. “The kit comes with a device for a 45-degree angle,” he explained. “You hold it level, and you see the top of the tree. (For example, at) 55 feet away, the theorem tells me the tree is 55 feet tall. That’s a handson, out in the field (lesson),” he said. The implications of weather on trees and history will also be part of the class. “There is a tree borer (in the kit) that will bore a hole into the tree and pull the center out (in a round cylindrical rod) so you can see the growth rings,” said Smoker, who noted that the age of the tree and extreme weather patterns can be uncovered from looking at the tree rings. He explained that information about historical Jamestown was discovered this way. “They determined that there was a hard drought when Jamestown was settled (by seeing that) the trees didn’t do well (at that time),” he said. “That’s the historical application of tree knowledge. We can prove history with that.” He noted that the tree is not harmed by the boring. See PVIS pg 5

Quilting And Partnership Aids Medicare Recipients providing certified counselors who Community can help recipients reduce Medicare BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Linda DaSilva walked into the Quilt Shop at Miller’s, 2811 Lincoln Highway East, Ronks, in January, she began a conversation with retail manager Annette Nauman. “I said it was a fun place,” recalled DaSilva. Nauman responded by asking DaSilva if she would like to work in the shop. Two days later, DaSilva was back to fill out an application, and she began working in the shop in March. See Highland Quilters pg 2

When Kim Skinner, volunteer coordinator with Lancaster County Office of Aging, looked at the county map in early 2021, she saw that the ELANCO and Pequea Valley areas had no Apprise locations. Apprise offers help to new and existing Medicare beneficiaries by Ridgeview Mennonite Church pastor Audrey Kanagy (left), volunteer Apprise counselor Susan Ryan (right), and Kim Skinner (not pictured), volunteer coordinator with Lancaster Office of Aging, teamed up to provide Medicare enrollment information.

costs during the annual open enrollment period, which ran from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 in 2021. Skinner contacted Dawn RanckHower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, for help. Ranck-Hower referred Skinner to Audrey Kanagy, who pastors Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville. Ridgeview sits on the high ground in Pequea Valley School District, just over the line from ELANCO School District, making it convenient for residents from both areas.

DaSilva sees the shop experience as being about more than selling quilts. “It’s the story of the quilts. It’s the community of people who make the quilts,” explained DaSilva, who noted that customers often tell staff about the quilts in their families. The sense of community caused DaSilva, Nauman, and fellow employee Barbara Whitney to consider what they could do to give back to others in the area. “We knew we had these wonderful quilting groups locally that do so much charity work,” said DaSilva. “We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting to feature their things (in the shop) so customers could learn about what (the groups) do?’”

Excited about the opportunity for local quilting groups to raise funds for charity are (from left) Barbara Whitney, Annette Nauman, Fran Stefany, and Linda DaSilva.

Next, DaSilva contacted Fran Stefany, a member of the Highland Quilters group associated with Highland Presbyterian Church in Manheim Township. DaSilva and Stefany had known each other about a decade, having worked together at Franklin & Marshall College, and this was not the first time the pair had used quilting to help charities. “(In 2011), I was making trips (to Heritage Academy in Ghana) and raising money for supplies (for the school there),” said DaSilva, who would bring back fabric from Ghana that Highland Quilters would turn into quilts and sell at Highland’s mission fair. The money they raised provided scholarships and supplies to Heritage. The Highland Quilters agreed to be the first group to be spotlighted in the shop. Nauman selected a spot where she said customers tend to look right after coming in the door. “We did a quilt for the (American) Cancer Society and raised $17,000 (previously),” explained Nauman. “This is the wall we used for that.” During the month of October, Highland’s quilts were displayed in the shop, with 100% of the sales being returned to the quilters. The group waited until the Extraordinary Give in Novem-

ber and then pooled that money with other funds to support both local and international missions, choosing to spread out more than $4,000 to several organizations, including HOPE International and CASA. During November and December, the Red Rose Quilters Guild of Lancaster are in the spotlight at the shop. The guild works to promote quilting through education, and guild members give lectures and oversee workshops. Currently, meetings are virtual, but the studio, which provides unstructured quilting time for members, is held in person the fourth Tuesday of each month at Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians in Lititz. More information about the group may be found at http://bit.ly/rrqg-lanc. Nauman said the shop plans to continue the program, with the next group to be spotlighted in March. For years, Ruth Anne and Dave Starnes and Judy and Alan Dinning, couples that are residents of Garden Spot Village (GSV), talked about establishing a place where the artists of GSV could sell their creations. In the spring of this year, the couples heard that the area off the Village Square at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, which had been occupied by Fulton Bank, would be available. “We decided the timing was right,” said Ruth Anne. “We had to put it in writing (because) people coveted this spot.” In June, the four wrote a proposal. In July, they received a positive response, and on Nov. 4, Artisans Corner opened. A selection committee decides which items may be offered in the juried shop. All items for sale are handmade by residents of GSV. While Gordon Lash tended the cash register a few days after the shop opened, Ruth Anne showed off the tiny treasure boxes Gordon creates. She gladly pointed out Annie McAbee’s soft goods, including knitted pieces, and Hershey Hostetter’s tiny animals, including a hedgehog. “This is Lloyd Ziegler’s work. They are spoon and fork art,” said Ruth Anne of the unusual metal creations. The new shop also sells cutting boards in a variety of shapes and sizes, turned bowls, and a cornhole game. Sewn items include table runners and special clothing items for adults. Dave and Ruth Anne’s photography adorns the cards they make, and Sally Mittelstadt’s unique cork purses are attractively displayed. Other items include watercolors by Junior Zook, and stained glass items by Bonnie Lord, which are attractively arranged on the glass door in front of the vault to show off their bright colors. Quilts created by Sally Rapp and by the Garden Spot Village Quilters are also available for purchase. Working her way around the shop, Ruth Anne pointed out cat beds, tatting, paintings, pottery, and handwoven dish cloths. “These are detailed collages made from cut-up magazines,” she noted, referencing another craft. Ruth Anne stopped at some brightly colored hats and See GSV pg 8

Learning about trees and different types of wood is already part of Smoker’s classes. “I have a tree of the day,” he said, noting that the tree is projected on the screen and that he talks about it to the class for a minute or two. For instance, on Nov. 15, the tree of the day was bald cypress, a tree that resists rot and therefore was used for masts and planks of ships. “This is how they may have shaped these trees for ship building,” explained Smoker, pointing to the unusually shaped trees on the screen. Smoker referred to the kit as a “wish list item.” “I didn’t think it would fall under the yearly budget, but this opportunity came up,” he said. The PPL Foundation has given out more than $300,000 to 265 teachers since its inception in 2003.

Christmas Tree Mulching Program Posted County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized through-

out the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The

about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Residents may bring Christmas trees to Lancaster County Central Park for mulching.

mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, firstserved basis after Thursday, Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information

Kanagy was pleased to hear from Skinner. “Ever since I came three years ago, I have thought, ‘We have this big, lovely building, and we don’t fully use it,’” she recalled. “I want it to be a resource for the community.” When Skinner called, the church was able to say, “yes,” to being an Apprise site. “We said, ‘Sure,’” reported Kanagy. “We consider that a community service, so we don’t ask for rent.” On Nov. 22, 2021, Susan Ryan, volunteer with the Office of Aging, spent much of the day at Ridgeview helping area residents who had signed up to discuss their specific Medicare needs. “We had back-to-back appointments here,” reported Kanagy. Apprise counselors provide information on Medicare Part D plans, Advantage plans, supplemental insurance, and more. “It’s a free service we provide,” explained Skinner. “It’s objective, and people really can’t get anything like this (elsewhere).” Skinner stated that the organization provides charts with income levels for PACE, PACENET, and Extra Help, which can

assist with prescription medicines for those in lowincome brackets. Skinner noted that Advantage plans were advertised heavily on television during the enrollment period. “Our calls increased because of all the ads on TV,” she said. Other county Apprise locations include Adamstown, Columbia, Denver, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lititz, Manheim Township, Mount Joy, and Quarryville. Skinner shared that she is always looking for churches, libraries, and other locations in areas where Apprise is not already present. Kanagy pointed out that the partnership is exactly what she was hoping for. “We are excited about that kind of community collaboration,” she said. More information about the Office of Aging may be found at www.lancoaging.org. For specific questions, readers may call 717-299-7979 or email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us.
