“T
here’s more demand for character coaches than there are volunteers,” said Ben Swarr, director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Berks County, who works with athletes in Twin Valley and Governor Mifflin school districts. Swarr is also a former character coach for Cocalico High School wrestling. “We are looking for volunteers and for coaches willing to have character coaches (help out),” added FCA’s Kyle Martin, who works with students at LampeterStrasburg, Conestoga Valley, and Solanco high schools. Adam Burns, FCA area representative with Pequea Valley and Ephrata high schools, noted that the job of a character coach is to serve the coaching staff team in any way he or she can, and that a volunteer need not be proficient in a sport to be a character coach. Character coaches are asked to aid the head coach with a focus on

social and emotional development of student-athletes. Objectives include encouraging athletes, working to create a positive culture, and helping to develop leadership characteristics in athletes. The first year of serving usually involves building relationships,
followed by working to develop leadership skills. “If the door opens to spiritual conversation, that’s awesome, but the sole purpose is to serve,” added Burns. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport
and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for EL ANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with
an all-male coaching staff,” explained Burns. “(Her role) opens doors for g irls when they’re going through stuff. She is there to be on the bench and develop relationships.” Burns recalled that one of his first experiences as a character

It’s about the organization. It’s about the mission. It’s about the people. It’s not about bricks and mortar. But a building provides the structure that can bring everything together. Hope Inspire Love has a new home. It’s a space that the local human-trafficking opposer can call its own.
Hearts to help families BY ANN MEAD ASH
“This is for us to provide more services,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s president and CEO. “We want to grow our programs. This is just how we’ve evolved in the community. Now our name is on the side of a building. People will walk by and say, ‘What’s Hope Inspire Love about?’ Having a brick-and-mortar building will cause people to want to get involved, to get behind it. This
Steven and Allycia Barr of Leola have a dream. Someday, they would like to own a farm with the space and facilities to bring in families that are dealing with addiction and teach vocational skills. The dream was born of a hard reality. When the Barrs’ son, Steel, was born in Philadelphia in May of 2019, the couple was homeless and addicted, living in the back of a box truck in a friend’s driveway. The hospital where Steel was born gave Allycia the opportunity to go directly to a rehab program following his birth. “When (Allycia) left the hospital and went right to rehab, I was left in the box truck,” recalled Steven. “(I wish) there had been somewhere we could have gone together,” said Allycia, who believes

Gregory A. Schneider editor. Greg was a baseball coach with the Mount Joy Athletic Association for 15 years and served as president for part of that time. He loved coaching Mount Joy Blue Junior Midgets and sharing with his teams his love of the game as well as his beliefs of sportsmanship and honesty. Greg was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Poe Valley, Centre County. He also had a love of lighthouses, and he and Karen spent many vacations “chasing lighthouses” and taking thousands of photographs. Having had a walking disability for many years, he
often joked about publishing a book of his photos titled “Photos Taken From the Cab of a Ford F-150.” Greg attended Pursuit Church in Manheim. His strong faith and his love of God carried him through the later years of his life and sustained him through his short illness. Surviving in addition to his wife, Karen, is a daughter, Laura Lane, wife of Michael of Elizabethtown; two steps ons , Vau g hn Brown of Mount Joy and Timothy Brown, husband of Brittany N. of Mount Joy; two grandchildren, Rachel and Rebecca Lane; seven stepgrandchildren,

is the launch pad to make it happen.” On Dec. 13, 2023, Hope Inspire Love hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at its new digs at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event was attended by about 100 community members, clergy, volunteers, board members and individuals whose lives have been directly or indirectly affected by human trafficking. “ The atmosphere was wonderful, because it was beautiful people coming together to support one cause,” said T hurston. “There was a certain energy there. We’re not a home. We’re a place where people can come and get services. It was really neat because people were asking how they could get involved.” Before settling into the 1,100 square feet at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Hope Inspire Love had no real office space. Most of its face-to-face work was being performed at coffee shops or libraries or churches. “After COVID-19, we went remote,” said Thurston. “We have not had

a permanent home since 2020. It was very tough. It kept costs low, but we were seeing that people didn’t know how to find us, and we couldn’t help them.” “Having an actual location where people can come to, it’s just so great,” added Thurston. “We want to have a safe place where our community can come and heal. We’ve already had people come in and say, ‘I’ve been looking for you.’” The move to 1380 Harrisburg Pike culminated a nearly two-year search for Hope Inspire Love. Some of the $65,000 raised at the organization’s inaugural Hope for Freedom gala
in June of 2023 was used to fund the relocation and to purchase furnishings. “ A f t e r C O V I D, w e paused and asked ourselves, ‘Is this what we really want to do?’” said Thurston. “We wanted to be right outside the city. We wanted anyone to be able to walk through our door. We wanted to have a space with great lighting, parking spots, and there’s a bus stop right outside our door. It has an open floor plan, and the intake office in the back can be utilized for connecting in the future.” Hope Inspire Love’s new office space also represents
a milestone in the organization’s process of progress. “At the beginning, we were so focused on education,” said Thurston of the organization, which was founded in 2017. “We probably thought about the office originally 10 years ago. I never thought it would happen in year six. But we can’t do this alone. What’s blown us away is that we now have three fulltime staff members and over 50 volunteers. We are so grateful and so thankful for a great community.” For additional information on Hope Inspire Love, go to www.hopeinspire love.org.

was benched by a coach due to a class disruption. He has also worked on character development with team leaders. “ The way you react to things on the field can change anyone’s perspective,” he said, noting that in one game an opposing team player made an inappropriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “ We don’t want to emotionally
react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FC A volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship strateg y,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people for resources and advice.” Burns added that character coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at
practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. FC A has chapters in nearly ever y L ancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. Cut out this full ad for 50% OFF* any one item! While living there, she met Steven online. When the pair was evicted from his apartment, they moved to his parents’ home in Narber th. Two months later, they were living on the streets with only backpacks of clothes and Steven’s motorcycle. “That was our life for two years,” said Allycia. After Steven’s motorcycle was stolen, they moved into the box truck. S te el was a miracle, according to Allycia, who did not think she would be able to have children. His arrival prompted Allycia to beat her addiction and return to her aunt and uncle’s home. Steven struggled for some time afterward, finally finding acceptance at Restart in February of 2021. Allycia, her aunt and uncle, and a church the couple attended in Dillsburg paid his tuition. “He hit his breaking point,” recalled Allycia. Steven said that he knew he was going to die if he did not go into a program. He and Allycia were married at Celebration Community Church in Dillsburg a month before he graduated
with both Celebration’s pastor Mike Hammer and Jaime Santiago, director of Restart, officiating. Steven was invited to join the Restart staff after graduating, and the family moved to Leola in December of 2021. Both are currently trying to start their own businesses - Steven working with motorcycles and Allycia encouraging healthy eating. They have also made more than five trips to McPherson Square Park, often referred to as Needle Park because of the drug use that takes place there, in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. There they cook hot dogs and give out beverages and chips in hopes of starting conversations with the recipients. Steven is involved with the Midnight Riders Ministry, a motorcycle outreach overseen by the Rev. Jerry Conley. Looking ahead, the pair sees the value of working with families rather than just individuals to facilitate healing. “Even if only one (parent) is a drug addict, the other doesn’t trust them. T here are likely
codependency and boundary issues … and think of the trauma the children have been living. They all need a place to go to build trust and boundaries over again,” Allycia said. “When the families are on board, there’s a team of people asking (the addict) to do something different.”

Adams wrote to future first lady Abigail about Tammany, saying, “The people here have sainted him and keep his day.” After inspiring American patriots in the 18th century, Tammany shaped American politics in the 19th centur y and was celebrated in American popular culture well into the 20th centur y, most notably on the uniforms of professional sports teams. “During the Revolutionary War... stories of a patriotic and wise Indian chief ... circulated through the Colonies, (taking) a strong hold upon the minds of the soldiers,” Nichols wrote. The first original American opera, “Tammany: The Indian Chief,” was performed at John Street Theatre in Manhattan in 1794. Tammany appears in James Fenimore Cooper’s classic 1826 American novel, “The Last of the Mohicans.” A statue of Tammany keeps watch over the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. A Tammany statue also enjoys a place of prestige across from Philadelphia City Hall. The edifice itself is topped by the image of Tamanend’s English “brother” Penn. Tammany also serves as a silent sentinel to the heroes of Gettysburg. New York’s 42nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment - the Tammany Regiment - fought heroically on the infamous Pennsylvania battlefield. The image of

Tammany stands atop a monument to these men who helped defeat slavery. Tammany became a model of aspiration after the American Revolution. Patriotic Tammany societies proliferated around the nation. The Tammany Society’s constitution used in 1790 reads: “It shall connect in the indissoluble bonds of Patriots Friendship, American Brethren of known attachment to the Political Rights of Human Nature and the Liberties of this Country.” Yes, Tammany, like Columbia in an earlier United States, was viewed as a personification of the ideal of human liberty. James Gaffney brought Chief Tammany to American professional sports. In 1912, he purchased the National League’s Boston Rustlers, renaming the team the Boston Braves to honor Tammany. He added the Lenni Lenape’s image to the team’s uniforms. Babe Ruth played for the Boston Braves in
1935 and last played wearing the face of the patron saint of America on his sleeve. Tammany later adorned Braves uniforms as the franchise moved to Milwaukee and then Atlanta. “The American ideals of human right to ‘life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ spring chiefly from original American sources and were developed on American soil for untold centuries before Europeans arrived on this continent,” historian and biographer of early Americans Joseph W hite Nor wood wrote in his 1938 book “ The Tammany Legend.” “These ideals are therefore so distinctively native to the soil that they should be known as the first Americans knew them, by a name that completely symbolizes them. This name is Tamanend.” Information gathered for this article was gleaned from an essay by Kerry J. Byrne written in June 2023 and www.hiddencity phila.org.

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township A Native American chief shaped 200 years of American history and was celebrated as the patron saint of the new nation. Tamanend, a 17th-century Lenni Lenape chief, was a friend and ally of English Quaker William Penn, who settled the region we know as Pennsylvania (Penn’s Woods) in 1682. First honored as a patron saint by Washing ton’s troops, Tamanend, also referred to as Tammany, soon became patron saint of the whole American army. “ Tammany ... played a prominent role in the establishment of peaceful relations among the Native American tribes and the English settlers who established Pennsylvania,” reported http://www.Dela wareTribe.org, the official website of the Delaware tribe of Native Americans. Not only is it one of the top sporting events in the United States and one of the most important golf tournaments in the world, but it’s also going to provide an economic boom for the area. The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open will prove to be a win-win for the Lancaster Country Club, Manheim Township and Lancaster County.
The U.S. Open is coming to - or, more accurately, returning to - the Lancaster Country Club (LCC) in five months. Apparently, the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) last trip to Lancaster in 2015 was so successful, everyone involved thought it would be a good idea to do it again. “It’s huge. Huge isn’t the proper adjective,” said Josh Saunders, Lancaster Country

It’s not a feather in (the LCC’s) cap. It’s a feather in the community’s cap. The community has embraced the event.” During the week of May 27, 2024, many of the finest players in the world will descend upon the LCC, 1466 New Holland Pike, L ancaster, and its par70, 6,600-yard layout to decide the championship of United States women’s golf. Players will play practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. The four-round, 72-hole championship tournament will begin on Thursday, May 30, and conclude on Sunday, June 2. “With 25 years of experience and the help of my staff, we’re going to put on the best show possible,” said Saunders. “It’s been a lot of planning. There are more women playing golf. These players are really good. They hit the ball just as far as the average male, and they’re consistent. They don’t get off line. The players love the golf course. The players love playing in this atmosphere.”
