In 2019, Paradise Area Meals on Wheels celebrated 40 years of existence. The organization is located in a room in the Together Community Center (TCC), 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Since the program is affiliated with Lancaster Meals on Wheels, meals provided by the Lancaster program are delivered to TCC each Monday through Friday. One hot meal and one cold meal are included for each recipient for a total of up to 30 clients. Two drivers pick up the meals and deliver them in accordance with a route schedule for that day. Meals are provided for a nominal fee. “(Clients receive) five ounces of meat, five ounces of starch, and three ounces of vegetable a day, said board member Marie Glass, who handles intakes of new clients and cancellations, and who has been involved with the program for

more than a decade. She noted that meals are available for recipients who need to follow a customized diet, including those on low-sodium, diabetic, low vitamin K, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets, as well as soft diets, puree diets, and others. Hot meals may include ham and pineapple gravy, a shrimp dish, Southwest stuffed peppers, meatloaf and brown gravy, or chicken breast and gravy, while cold meals may include a turkey and cheddar sandwich, chicken Caesar salad, Cobb salad, or an egg and olive sandwich. Glass noted that salads are usually served twice a week in lieu of a sandwich. Currently, the Paradise organization could use a few volunteer drivers. “It’s a total of three hours a month, said Glass, who noted that a driver who is scheduled for a particular day is busy for about 90 minutes. “We use 10 volunteers per week for a two-week rotation, she said. located in Paradise and beyond. Law enforcement was represented as was Head Start, the Pequea Valley Public Library, North Star Initiative, United Way, and ASSETS. Tim Rogers, lead pastor of Grace Point Church and the current chair of the Together Initiative Network, asked representatives to share information about their organizations, including successes and challenges they may be facing. Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, said that the organization is looking at creative ways to drive revenue outside the donor relationship. The organization plans to open a print shop in the TCC with a long-term goal of providing workforce development by training students to enter the printing industry. Jennie Straub of Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone talked about a dating violence curriculum that was developed to teach in schools, in youth groups, and to parents in community centers along with a curriculum for sexual risk avoidance for students in grades five through senior high that meets all federal guidelines. The organization is working to promote the use of the materials, which Straub said are free and available for anyone to use. Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, talked about the organization’s restoration home for survivors of human trafficking, which opened in 2017. She mentioned that North Star was founded by Jen Sensenig, who noticed activity along

Route 30 that made her uncomfortable and reported it to police. A representative of Everence shared how the faith-based financial services organization can help nonprofit organizations with planned giving and strategizing for the future. Kevin Nofziger talked about a partnership the organization fostered with Tabor Community Services and Love INC to help Love INC develop budget coaches for Homes of Hope. The organization will hold a Stewardship University event at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 7. Other discussions included health care and township concerns. Rogers spoke briefly on the Together Initiative, which began in 2011 when five organizations in the Pequea Valley (PV) community joined to work for the good of the area. “This began with a couple of people getting together (and) asking questions of each other without a huge plan of creating something in five or 10 years,” said Rogers, who noted that the underlying question was “How can we help?” “That (question) fundamentally drove the network as we sat down with (the) superintendent, staff of PV (School District), township leaders, pastors, and Factory staff,” said Rogers. “The problems we’re trying to solve are complex,” he added, noting that poverty, housing, and delivering health services to people who need them are among the issues. “We want to hear from you,” he told the gathering. “What is a challenge you’re facing and is there a way to connect?” Readers who would like to know more about the Together Initiative may visit www.gracepointparadise.com/who-weare/together-initiative.

three years. The Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine is one of hundreds of events sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and held each year on the first Friday of February to create an unforgettable prom experience for people with special needs. Night to Shine is one of several ministries led by the foundation established by Tebow, a former professional quarterback and current professional baseball outfielder and college football analyst for the SEC Network. This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer,” Ketchum said. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening.

Lancaster General Health’s Blood Bank Donor Center, located in the Suburban Pavilion, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster, is hosting the Bleed Blue Challenge, a blood donation competition organized by local police departments. The Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Pennsylvania State, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University and Lancaster City police departments are competing to see which department, along with its community members, can donate the most blood. LG Health invites the community to participate in the challenge by donating on behalf of a select police department. The competition will run through Friday, Jan. 31, as part of an initiative to engage and give back to the community. The police department with the most community and police donations at the end of the challenge will receive a plaque. To donate blood, participants must be 16 years or older, be a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and have had no tattoos or

Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. “The impact that it makes is tremendous. Night to Shine is so special not only for the guests but for their families, too,” stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” See Night To Shine pg 7

They are the cooks who prepare a six-course 18th-century dinner, cooked hearthside and auctioned off at the Historic House Tour in December. Both have museum backgrounds and have demonstrated hearthside cooking at various historic sites. Participants are asked to wear natural fibers and an apron. CHEWY HOMEMADE SALTED CARAMELS Sweet, salty, chewy, and melt-in-your mouth delicious, these homemade salted caramels are the best of the best. - 1 & 1/2 cups heavy cream - 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1/2 cup packed Golden Barrel Light Brown Sugar

- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping

Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

According to board member Debbie Groff, who has served the program for more than 10 years and currently oversees financial aspects, people from all areas of the community help with the program and many have been volunteering to deliver meals for several years. “They are amazing, she said, adding, “We could always use more volunteers because people’s schedules change, but it has been a lot of community support to make it work. It’s nice to have extras and substitute (drivers). Glass added that for as many as a third of the Meals on Wheels clients, the driver may be the only interaction that person has on a given day. The Paradise area extends almost to Lampeter-Stasburg High School, and Glass noted it would be nice to have a driver from that area. The delivery range also includes Georgetown, Kinzers, White Horse, west to the intersection of routes 896 and 30, and north beyond the village of Intercourse. Drivers pick up meals at 9 a.m. and deliver on one of two routes from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. The program allows many senior residents as well as others recovering from illnesses to remain in their own homes. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them, continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them. More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. The Pequea Valley wrestling team posted two victories at the Panther Valley Duals on Saturday, January 4. The Braves defeated Panther Valley 52-18 and edged Halifax 35-21 while coming up short against Pine Grove in a 45-24 final plus losing to North Schuylkill and

Midd-West. Two wrestlers that stood out, Liam McKinley at 106 Dustin Huber at 152 Liam is a sophomore in his second year of varsity wrestling. Dustin is also in his second year of wrestling. In the North Schuylkill match, which the Braves lost 59-18, Dustin

Huber, Liam McGinley and Tyler Anderson each notched a pin for PV’s 18 points. “Liam brings tenacity and aggressiveness,” Rob King, the Braves’ head coach, stated. “He also brings experience. He has been honing his skills for the past two years.” “Dustin, a junior, is a tough and tenacious young man who gives it his best every chance that he gets,” said King. Huber registered his pin in the 152-pound weight class. McGinley pinned at 106 while Anderson, also a junior, pinned at 138. In the Midd-West defeat, the Braves forfeited at three different weight classes. Huber got a pin at 152. Luke Brown wrestled a tough bout at 170, but finished on the short end of a 13-12 decision to Joe Rodriguez. The highlights of a 45-24 setback to Pine Grove included Huber’s 15-2 major decision at 152, Brown’s firstperiod pin at 170 and decisions in

favor of McGinley (15-4, 106) and Zackery Donlen, who won 12-2 at 132. Brown also registered a pin in the Halifax match, doing so 1:34 into the 170-pound match. Collin Bailey (160) came away with a pin at 5:15. “Collin is the glue of the team,” said King. “He is concerned about everything going on with the team. His camaraderie and leadership are very important for us.” McGinley’s 11-1 major and another by Donlen (10-0, 132) helped Pequea along. Joseph Smith came away with a 13-7 decision at 126. The Braves came out of the weekend’s tournament with a 4-6 record. They fell to 2-3 on Wednesday, January 8 when they were blanked by Northern Lebanon at Kinzers. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Pequea Valley’s shooters found the scoring groove in the third quarter of their non-league home

basketball game on Monday, January 6. Coming off an intermission where they found themselves trailing Lancaster County Christian 2620, the Braves scorched the net for 16 points. They allowed only 11 second-half points and posted their third win of the year, 43-37. Devon Colyer, a returning junior, converted five three-point field goals on his way to a game-high 24 points. Nevin Stoltzfus scored all six of his points on a pair of treys while Sean Liney made a basket and went a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line for another half dozen. The Braves (3-8) were coming off a close contest also played at Pequea four days earlier. On Thursday, January 2, it was Linville Hill Christian that poured it on in that same third stanza, outscoring the home team 20-12 after the Braves had taken a 33-29 lead before the half. LHC went on to post a 59-53 win. Nevin Stoltzfus scored practically half of his team’s points, putting up 26 for Pequea. Of his 11 baskets, three came from three-point range. Colyer had a good night also, scoring 19 points, which included four treys. Meanwhile, a trio of teammates tied for the scoring lead for the

visitors. Cedric Stoltzfus, Michael Stoltzfus and Chandler Petersheim each netted 15 for Linville Hill. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL On Wednesday evening, the Braves escaped with a 45-43 victory at Lebanon Catholic, improving to 4-2 in Section Five of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. In terms of a basketball game with a major change in momentum, this was certainly one. The Beavers got out to a 21-10 lead after one period, but were held to a mere six points in the second quarter. Pequea closed the gap to 27-20 by halftime. Catholic came out and extended its lead to 10 points heading into the final period. That was when the Braves went on a 16-4 run to close out the contest and improve to 8-3 overall. Bethany Bills was the game’s top scorer. The Pequea senior scored 14 points, nailing a pair of three-pointers. Caroline Horst, another returning senior, finished with 11 points while Clara Neff and Brooke Liney scored seven and five points, respectively. The Beavers (7-6, 1-4 league) saw Avery Hupp and Sami Hatzfeld lead the way with 10 points each.

Distinctive prizes and colorful ribbons will be given to the overall top three male and female finishers; the first-, second-, and third-place winners in different age and gender categories; and the first three finishers of any age group who race with their dogs. There also will be a packet pickup prize as well as door and dog prizes for this milestone-year event. A registration fee has been set and may be paid on race day. Those who register by Friday, Jan. 17, will pay a discounted fee. Advance registrants may pick up their race packets on Jan. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods in The Shoppes at Belmont, Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. A total of 234 runners and hikers registered for the 2019 Polar Bear 5K, Kanaskie reported. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event, and 47 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. The group uses the proceeds to support local efforts to end global warming, which is credited as the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The funds will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County organizations over the past four years. Race proceeds will also sustain the group’s free-to-thepublic outdoor activities and educational programs. The Sierra Club is a national organization with each state having its own chapter. The Lancaster Group, one of 10 groups in the Pennsylvania Chapter, has about 1,500 members. Possibilities: Post-Traumatic Growth as a Reality” will be presented on Friday, Oct. 23. According to Karen Carnabucci, the school’s founder and one of the instructors of the series, trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the effects of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on behavior, and responds in a manner that is supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Participants will learn how trauma-informed care is different than trauma treatment; a strength-based action-oriented model, adapted for a high level of safety and containment on multiple levels; how to deal with the reluctant or resistant client; how trauma-informed care supports relapse prevention with addictions and eating disorders; how to safely incorporate experiential activities and creative arts therapies in trauma-informed care; and self-care as a route to nourish the professional and provide deeper care of client or patient. The series is intended for mental health professionals, educators, physicians, nurses, health care administrators, first responders, creative arts therapists, alternative health practitioners, midwives, youth leaders, school counselors, human resources specialists, addictions professionals, and others interested in trauma-informed care. The instructors will be Carnabucci and Sharon Czabafy, both of whom have experience with trauma care and treatment, substance abuse and addictions, and experiential and expressive therapies. Classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, offering up to 24 CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and licensed counselors, plus psychodrama hours. Psychology and Act 48 credits are pending. An early bird discount will be available until Monday, Jan. 20. The fee includes handouts and healthy snacks. Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at

Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved

one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also

includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, team-like attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time - endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.
