Lancaster Mennonite will host open house events at four of its campuses, including Lancaster, Locust Grove, New Danville, and Hershey. The program is titled “Kids Without a Country: An Illegal Immigrant’s Story” and will feature the filmed story of Reyna Grande, who crossed the border with her family illegally when she was 9 years old. Grande is now a teacher and the author of “The Distance Between Us.” Lifetree participants will discuss immigration reform, including issues surrounding children of people who entered the country illegally. Factory Ministries youth advocate Micah Leaman, who is co-leader of the Factory Youth Center with Elizabeth Hoover, is looking forward to expanding the center’s offerings beginning in early February. “We will have an after-school program on Tuesdays from 3 to 5 p.m.,” said a beaming Leaman. “We’re excited to open (for) another opportunity (to serve area students) during the week.” The new program will be open to students in grades seven through 12. Transportation to the center will be provided by Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). Leaman noted that the program will offer one-one-one tutoring for students and hopefully workshops to help students work on making wise career decisions in the future. “It will be a fun atmosphere, but more focused on academics and developing
(career) resources,” he said. Leaman said the idea for the program grew out of the original goals the youth center has always worked to meet. “The mission (is) to be a safe place where area youths can come to have fun and grow closer to one another and to caring adults and to be very relational and offer a spiritual component,” said Leaman. According to Leaman, student responses to the center show that those goals are being met, but he and Hoover, who have been directing the center together for about a year, wanted to offer more. “(We were seeing) students graduate, no longer coming to our programs, and (dealing with) difficult situations,” said Leaman, who noted that not having the skills or training to find gainful employment was chief among these. “The only apple I remember from my childhood was the Red Delicious someone gave me at Halloween. I felt ripped off that they didn’t give me candy,” recalled author and Maine apple historian John Bunker. “(At that time), I thought apples came in only red and green.” After Bunker grew up, graduated from college, and moved to Super Chilly Farm in Palermo, Maine, he discovered apple trees, specifically those ancient specimens that grow in backyards and in far-off fields throughout rural Maine. Around the Civil War, we had about 25,000 varieties of apples.” Bunker noted that commercial fruit growers have focused on apples ideal for eating raw, so many of those varieties have either died out or become rare, and folks are missing out. “There are so many uses for apples: cooked, baked, in sauce, or cider,” Bunker said. “I eat apples daily. I make sauce every morning. The apple (variety) doesn’t look pretty, but it stores well in the cold cellar, and it doesn’t need any spices or sugar. But if you ate (that apple variety) raw, it would be awful.” Bunker will discuss apples, particularly heirloom varieties, at the annual Backyard Fruit Growers winter meeting on Saturday, Jan. 19. 4-H Clubs Will Hold Meetings Three Lancaster County 4-H clubs will host reorganizational meetings in January. All 4-H programs are available to all youths who are ages 8 to 18 prior to Jan. 1. Completed enrollment forms must be handed in at the reorganizational meeting. The Lancaster County 4-H Livestock Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, with registration at 7 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend this meeting with their youths. The enrollment dues per member are payable at the meeting. Participants in the club learn about beeves, market goat, swine and sheep. Little Lambs, a nonprofit mission outreach program of High View, is a Christian-based program that has a mission to provide the finest in early childhood education, to prepare children for kindergarten, and to
direct attention to moral values. Daily activities include biblical lessons, chapel time with the pastors, play, stories, music, art experiences, reading and math readiness activities, outside play, field trips, and class visitors. Children from all religious backgrounds are welcome; no specific doctrine will be taught. Little Lambs is located in the Conestoga Valley School District. While the majority of the students are from Conestoga Valley and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, students also attend from Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts and the School District of Lancaster.

CEF Will Mark 75 Years Evangelism Fellowship and Its President, Reese Kauffman.” Founded by a sub-committee of the Christian Businessmen’s Committee in 1944, CEF of Lancaster County started under the leadership of Katherine Hershey. It has since grown to include Good News Clubs (GNC) held in public schools, JYou Connection (JYC) for middle-schoolers, and a summer ministry program that involves teenagers (Christian Youth in Action or CYIA) who lead Five-Day Clubs in neighborhoods as well as vacation Bible schools and Camp Good News at local churches. CEF of Lancaster County has 10 staff members and more than 300 volunteers serving in just about every school district in Lancaster County. The ministry has partnerships with more than 40 local churches. Its mission is to evangelize children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, disciple children in their Christian faith, and connect children to local, Bible-believing churces. Fraktur Classes from pg 1 The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer two classes focused on fraktur, both of which will be taught by local artist Emily Smucker-Beidler. Fraktur, a fractured calligraphy surrounded by birds, swirls, and flowers, has evolved to become a distinctly American folk art. The first class, “Fraktur Introduction,” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to create fraktur, rendering traditional motifs in ink before painting them in watercolor. By the end of the class, each participant will have his or her own small work of fraktur to take home. SmuckerBeidler will also give a presentation on the history of fraktur, looking at the three distinct styles from southeastern Pennsylvania. A starter kit containing the basic supplies is included with the class. Separate costs have been set for LMHS members and for nonmembers. The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 25. The second class, “The Illuminated Letter,” will take place on Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will pick up where the first class left off, but participants do not need to have taken the first class. It will focus on learning lettering and calligraphy within the context and history of fraktur. Participants will learn how to use a nib pen and India ink and learn both traditional techniques and modern adaptations. The registration cost, which will be discounted for LMHS members, includes all materials required, including paper, handouts, tracing paper, pencils, and uncoated, machine-finished paperboard. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 8. Experienced students can take the advanced fraktur workshops, available to those who have previously taken fraktur classes at
the LMHS. Workshops have been set for 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 2 and March 16. Participants will receive one-on-one assistance from 8 to 9 a.m. and have studio time until noon. - 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1 cup Golden Barrel Brown Sugar - 1 cup Golden Coconut Oil, solid state - 1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract - 3 eggs - 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 1 cup baking cocoa, sifted - 2 tsp. baking soda - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/2 cup instant chocolate pudding mix (small box) - 2 1/4 cups buttermilk - 1 cup chocolate chips or chunks
Ganache - 8 oz. Dark chocolate, chopped - 1 cup heavy whipping cream (or chocolate chips) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with coconut oil and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County is celebrating 75 years of ministry. Its purpose is to share Jesus with children throughout the county. Reese Kauffman, president of CEF International, will kick off the celebration on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 6:45 p.m. at WJTL’s Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Under Kauffman’s leadership, CEF has grown from reaching 1 million boys and girls per year in fewer than 100 nations to more than 20 million children around the world in nearly every nation. Joining Kauffman will be Robert J. Morgan, teaching pastor of The Donelson Fellowship in Nashville, Tenn. Morgan is an award-winning writer of more than 35 books in print and more than 4.5 million copies in circulation in multiple languages. Lovers of everything Scottish will relish spending an evening at historic Beale Manor in celebration of beloved poet Robert Burns. Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Victorian-style mansion house, located at 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. Beginning at 6 p.m., visitors will arrive to the music of a piper. The festivities will go into full swing with a traditional haggis ceremony, where the haggis will be brought into the company and Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis� will be read. Harpist Kendrah Tozzo will provide music before and during the buffet dinner that will feature Scottish fare, including haggis, smoked salmon, salad, trifle, shortbread, cock-a-leekie (leeks and chicken) soup and neeps and tatties (mashed yellow rutabagas or turnips and potatoes). Those who attend are invited to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their family tartans, whether in a kilt, scarf or tie. Dress for the event is semiformal. Following dinner, there will be additional entertainment, including a musical program by Charlie Zahm entitled “A Tribute to Robert Burns.� There will be toastings, readings of Burns’ work and a sing-along of Burns’ songs, concluding with his popular “Auld Lang Syne.� This is the second annual Burns Night presented by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation, but this year marks the first time the event will be held at Beale Manor. “Most of our events that we do
have a Scottish or Celtic theme because of the Covenanters, Scotch-Irish and Scottish who settled in the county,� said Donna McCool, foundation board member. “For anyone that is interested in Scotland or Roberts Burns, this should be a fun event.� The mission of the foundation is the preservation of the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The church structure was rebuilt on the same foundation in 1849. A Presbyterian academy was later added to the building. At one point, that building became the Bart High School. Today, it is used for a summer church service, concerts and the foundation’s Scottish Festival. The foundation is independent from the Presbyterian church, and it focuses on the historical nature of the structure. Most recently, the foundation replaced the north wall of the church, and there are other projects still to come. “The church itself is in pretty good shape, but there’s always something (in need of repair) with a building that old,� McCool said. As part of its mission to continue supporting education in retirement, the Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR) association has awarded the following grants to local educators and schools for the 2018-19 school year. The following grants were approved and checks were delivered to the employees and their school. Matt Becker, Brian McClellan, Bob Needelman, Emily Rossman, and Nicole Reppert, fourth-grade team, Fulton Elementary School, received $200 as partial funding for materials for a STEM Community Impact Design Challenge in which all fourth-grade students will research an issue in the community, pose a solution, design a prototype, and share their outcome and learning. Kelcey Bucks, librarian, Park Elementary School, received $391 for creative construction material that will give students manipulatives for the library’s STEM Initiative program. Erin Campbell, speech language pathologist, Columbia Middle and High School, received $200 for a Skoog, a tactile instrument that will attach to an electronic tablet and will provide a way for students with all types of disabilities the chance to make music. It will also aid
in speech therapy. Kristen Canady, librarian, Schaeffer Elementary School, received $500 for flexible seating for the kindergarten to fourthgrade library. Beth Haldeman, principal, Reamstown Elementary School, received $200 as partial funding for the first elementary career day. Mandee Hatcher, kindergarten teacher, Park Elementary School, received $434 for special playground equipment that will aid early childhood motor coordination and development. Shari Miller, in-school suspension aide, Landisville Middle School, received $200 for materials to aid in helping at-risk students be successful in the classroom throughout the year through a project called “Building Bridges.� Kristin Moritz, kindergarten teacher, Park Elementary School, received $461 for special books that will help students develop skills in reading, writing, and drawing pictures to go along with their writing. Kerrie Snavely, science teacher, Conestoga Valley High School, received $200 as partial funding for a special “green� storage rack for environmentally friendly stream study equipment. Jeffrey Wile, computer science
teacher, Warwick High School, received $200 as partial funding for Turing Tumbles, gear-based pegboards that use marbles to give students an additional physical/hands-on experience that help develop skills in coding concepts. All projects for the grants are to be completed by Sunday, June 30, 2019. Upon completion, the recipient is to submit a description and evaluation of the project, which will be shared in the LCSR newsletter and possibly at a membership luncheon meeting. LCSR is a chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), which is an association comprised of members who are retired employees of public schools of Pennsylvania. In addition to the grants, the organization awards two $1,000 educational scholarships to graduating seniors each year. The organization also has a “Little Red Schoolhouse� program that provides free books to children. Another focus in its mission is to visit, send cards, and provide small gifts of love to more than 40 members who are older, ailing, or unable to get out and around. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming every day, music therapy, therapeutic horseback riding, arts and crafts, group games, and sports. “The staff give 200 percent, and they always say they feel like they learn more than they feel the campers do,” Paskoff stated. “They are really energetic, passionate people who will do whatever it takes to make (camp) an exceptional experience.” “We take every moment, and even though you think of it as just camp, we’re working on socialization and other skills at all times,” added Paskoff. The evening includes a short lesson. “We send a message that we are here, and we understand life is difficult,” said Leaman. “Our job is to be available for these students and walk with them and
encourage them.” In addition, students may enjoy free time, games, and opportunities to express themselves musically or artistically. Toward that end, the center has already partnered with PVSD. “We have an incentive program coordinated with the school with parental permission,” explained Leaman. “We can have more involvement (with students) and help them put together goals.” Leaman pointed out that because of the relationship between the ministry and students, the leaders and volunteers can interact with students about career options. “I have conversations weekly with students about what they are interested in and what we can be doing now (to help them prepare).” In one room at the center, students can reap the rewards of taking part in an incentive program. “This is our Factory Store,” said Leaman. “(Students) can earn points for good attendance, grades, and behavior, and we have T-shirts, (beverages), and snacks they can (purchase when they) redeem points. The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team is off to a fast start, winning five of its first six league games and building a 10-2 overall record. Part of the reason this team is dominating Section Five of the Lancaster-Lebanon League is the tandem of juniors averaging over 12 points per game. On Tuesday night while hosting Lebanon Catholic, the Braves weren’t converting shots in the early going and went into the second quarter trailing the Beavers by a 7-2 score. However, Abbey Leslie and Caroline Horst, the aforementioned leading
scorers, as well as senior Marlena Ferry led a strong surge that resulted in a 52-44 comeback win. “Caroline Horst does a lot on the floor for us,” head coach Jason McDonald stated. “She rebounds, plays defense, scores. Abbey is a high motor shooter and plays great defense.” McDonald addressed the slow start on offense. “We did not shoot the ball very well,” he said. “It was one of those nights where we didn’t get it going until the second quarter. The Braves scored 22 points in the second quarter alone, taking 24-18 lead
into the locker room. They kept up the scoring with an 18-10 third quarter. “You get it going and get into a rhythm,” McDonald said. “They [Beavers] played pretty good defense too, so you have to give them credit.” Leslie scored 13 while Ferry, who drilled a pair of three-pointers, finished with 12. Horst had 10 points as did Clara Neff, who also made a pair of three’s and went 2-for-2 at the foul line. “We have five kids that can put the ball in the basket on any given night,” said McDonald. Caroline, Clara Neff and Bethany Bills are our top rebounders. But it has been a collective effort.” Asked what the team needs to do in order to keep its momentum heading into a more steady slate of L-L League games, McDonald replied, “We just need to keep playing our style - pressuring teams and making them turn the ball over; also, the transition game and finding open shooters for layups. We play our style and we’ll be successful.” WRESTLING In a section where Northern Lebanon is undefeated against league opponents, the PV wrestling team suffered a loss to the first-place Vikings, who improved to 4-0 with a 61-15 defeat of the Braves on Wednesday. Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, invites to public to view “Ice Harvesting Along the Susquehanna,” an immersive exhibit about the ice harvesting industry. Prior to refrigeration, homes and commercial businesses required ice to keep food cold. A worldwide industry was created to collect ice from frozen rivers, ponds, and lakes and ship it by wagon and rail to be sold. Pennsylvania ranked third in the nation for ice production behind only Maine and New York. Locally, Columbia had at least three ice houses that kept residents supplied with ice for their homes. Deliveries of ice were brought by the “ice man” to homes on a regular basis. The exhibit follows the ice from the river to the kitchen. It features a wide variety of objects, including ice harvesting tools such as drills, saws, and plows. Antique ice boxes, ice shavers, ice crushers, and

Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.” Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. Maddie attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned stops at nine farms along the way to the national competition in Louisville for the team to practice judging animals. Jacob Snavely, the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim, has been a 4-H member for six years. He is a sophomore at Manheim Central High School, where he is actively involved in FFA and started a student livestock judging club. Jacob decided to try out for the Senior Livestock Judging Team after hearing about it at the annual Lancaster County 4-H reorganizational meeting, where volunteers share about the various opportunities for the coming year. The 2019 4-H Livestock Clubs reorganizational meeting is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Emily Welk of Strasburg, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and is also a member of FFA. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level. “I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year. Prior to the national competition, the team won the state championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth. Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for hands-on experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show. “We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked

Frozen Foot Race Series Enters 30th Year By Chelsea Peifer

Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants.
“I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. The Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series is back for its 30th year. The three-race series will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Participants who complete all three races will now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/event s.
