Club Seeks Applications For Bike Grants By Ann Mead Ash

located at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will discuss tips and strategies for losing weight and becoming healthy on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. The program, titled “Hard to Be Healthy: TV’s ‘Biggest Loser’ Weighs In,” will include a filmed interview with Jaron Tate, a contestant on “The Biggest Loser.” Tate shares his secrets for losing more than 150 pounds and keeping the weight off. Admission is free. For details, contact 717-473-9115 or ltclancaster@gmail.com.

“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes. LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https://lancasterbikeclub.net/ grant-program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15. “It is a simple application process,”

said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.” Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant. “I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. See Bicycle Club pg 5

Bicyclists take part in the Covered Bridge Ride organized each August by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride raises funds that the club uses to give out grants to area organizations for bicycles, bike racks, signage, and more. Applications for this year’s grant program are due by Feb. 15.

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student See Service Dogs pg 6

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

school students choose from a variety of elective subjects and clubs to broaden their interests and learning. All students participate in music and art programs. The Academy at West Fallowfield Christian School is a unique high school experience offered for ninth through 12th grades. The college-style model fosters student accountability and time management skills. It combines learning on campus two and a half days per week with the remaining days of independent study done at home. The Academy offers electives on Wednesday mornings. Some of the current elective offerings are art, music, life skills, SAT preparation, archery and nature/environment. During the course of the year, teachers plan all lessons, provide instruction and assign work to be completed at home on remaining days. Students are graded and issued report cards, and they compile portfolios of completed work. At the end of the year, achievements are assessed by the evaluator of the parents’ choice. A pay-perclass option is also available. West Fallowfield Christian School has a full comprehensive Resource Room to offer academic and learning support. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides additional reading and speech therapy support. The small class size also gives students opportunities to receive

individualized attention. For 77 years, West Fallowfield Christian School has been providing Christian education for families and students in the surrounding communities. The school’s members attend a total of more than 38 churches in the Chester and Lancaster county areas. Bus transportation is supplied for kindergarten through eighth-grade students residing in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea, Solanco, and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts. Financial grants are available for eligible families in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the school at 610-593-5011 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Readers may visit www.wfcs.org or find the school on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. In the case of inclement weather, readers may check the school’s website for alternate dates. is to move the boxes groups of up to four participants make as one of a variety of duties they complete, from the area where they are constructed to another location in the warehouse. The more boxes the participants complete, the more trips Strine makes. “They keep me moving,” he said. “On a busy day, I do 20,000 steps in four hours.” According to ODC executive director Gregg Richards, the program is designed to give participants a chance to work in an integrated environment. “Small group employment is a crew of program participants who go to a workplace with a program supervisor and work side by side with employees of the local business, (where they) are paid at minimum wage or above,” explained Richards, who added that businesses may utilize a crew for seasonal work or on a regular basis. Strine said that ODC participants were carefully selected for the program based on skills. Over the course of a year, Strine worked to cull a list of 40 possible participants down to eight workers and four alternates. “They were competing for positions,” noted Strine, who added that the participants work four hours per day, clocking in and out and working alongside other Kinsey’s employees.

Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, said that the skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. Mueller added that many businesses have a variety of tasks that might also be a good fit for ODC individuals, including light assembly, collating mailings, and putting kits together. Strine noted that the ODC participants in the small group program have also folded and packed items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Emerson, one of the small group participants, said that his favorite job is making boxes, especially the large boxes. “We try our best (to make as many boxes as we can),” said Emerson, who also folds T-shirts. Emerson appreciates the excitement of meeting new people, but he said he does get nervous sometimes when talking to people he does not know. That is where Deb Russell, who serves as a liaison between Kinsey’s and ODC comes in. “Our crews interact throughout the day and during lunch breaks,” said Russell, who first suggested ODC participants help with box production in early 2016 based on her sister’s 40 years of experience at ODC. “The crew from ODC arrives with a positive attitude that’s contagious

throughout the building,” Russell continued. “The way they support one another to accomplish the goals we’ve laid out for them is inspiring. We should all learn a lesson from them.” Strine complimented Kinsey’s employees, saying, “Interaction between Kinsey’s employees and participants has been excellent.” According to Mueller, integrating participants into community businesses is an ultimate goal for ODC. Strine agreed, saying, “All (participants) have designated disabilities, but I like to look at what they can do.” Russell added that ODC crew members have been willing to try new tasks, following instructions compiled in a binder. “The binder was made up so that each crew could work independently, making the final projects consistent for Kinsey’s and giving (the participants) a feeling of success and independence,” said Russell. “We’re so proud to be working with such a wonderful organization.” Emerson said he likes the work, but he also enjoys receiving a paycheck. His favorite thing to spend his money on is pizza. ODC is actively seeking more employers who could benefit from the talents and abilities offered by participants. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.odcenter.org or call 717-397-4269.

Bicycle Club from pg 1 The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety. Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250-foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail. In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club ’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants. It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride.

the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicappedaccessible buttons and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his two-year training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.udservices.org.

Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but

each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of

under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines. The permit training and testing can be accessed through Penn State Extension by visiting https://extension.psu .edu/spotted-lanternfly-permit -training. For information regarding permitting, readers may contact slfpermit@pa.gov. State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.

PV’s Young Hoopsters Gaining Experience by Ara Grigorian

For the Pequea Valley boys’ basketball team, the main problem this season has simply been numbers. Numbers in terms of how many players the varsity squad has been able to send onto the court throughout the season, thus leading to a difficult 0-6 record in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “We are very young,” explained head coach Thad Rittenhouse. “We had several individuals who were seniors who couldn’t come out for various reasons. We are virtually playing our junior varsity team at the varsity level. We had to put these guys right into the fire. We’re probably the youngest team in the L-L League. Out of our 13 players, eight are freshmen and three are sophomores.”

The team’s most recent game was a visit to Kennard-Dale for a non-league game on Tuesday night. The Rams took advantage of a low percentage of converted shot attempts by the Braves and won the game 64-25. “We just didn’t shoot the ball well,” said Rittenhouse. “We had a lot of open looks in the game. We couldn’t hit any buckets. If we had, it would’ve been a closer game. They have a team with a lot of juniors and seniors.” Sophomore Devon Colyer led Pequea with 15 points, including a three-point jumper. Antonio Lazar added seven. “Antonio Lazar has been a pleasant surprise,” Rittenhouse remarked. “And Devon is pretty much our leading offensive player,” Rittenhouse said.

“We are facing a challenge of getting out in man-to-man defense,” he added. “Some of our guys get burned out by the second half. “We are a small team, but we are trying to learn to help each other on defense,” continued the coach. “Team defense is what we’ve been pushing all year. “We are continuing to build our program,” he added. “The guys are going to stick with it. They love the game of basketball.” The Braves, who are 0-15 overall, will close out the regular season with four league games out of the remaining six. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL In girls’ basketball action, Pequea Valley defeated Kutztown and Kennard-Dale in consecutive non-league games. The victories

over the Cougars and the Rams raised the Braves’ record to 12-2, which is also good for third in the District Three Class-AAA power rankings. Asked if the non-league wins helps act as a barometer for post-season potential, head coach Jason McDonald replied, “This is definitely one of those games. Plus, our stretch of games over the next two weeks is tough. We’re playing teams that are going to challenge us. In the post-season, we’ll be battle tested. “Kennard-Dale is a very tough team,” he added. “They have good outside shooting as well as their inside game. They play very good defense and finish well around the basket. “We hit some big shots,” McDonald

noted. “We played patiently on the offensive end and locked down on defense, especially in the second half.” The 50-44 victory at home on Tuesday included a lock-down defense that allowed the Rams only eight fourth-quarter points. Pequea came back from a 36-35 deficit. Abbey Leslie scored a game-high 18 points. She sized up her shots from long range, making three treys and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the charity stripe. “She had a great game, hitting a couple of big three’s to help us get the lead, to propel us,” McDonald noted. “She’s passing the ball, scoring and playing great defense.”

Caroline Horst added 11 points and provided great defense as well. “On defense she has also been playing very well,” added the coach. Bethany Bills tacked on nine points while Marlena Ferry and Clara Neff each scored six. Ferry’s six points came courtesy of two three-pointers. The Kutztown game, which the Braves won on the road on Saturday, January 12, was not as close. Pequea posted a 74-32 win with Leslie scoring 22 points - 12 of which came from three-point baskets. Horst scored 16 while Ferry (11), Neff (9) and Bills (7) contributed to the dominant win. “Kutztown couldn’t handle our defensive pressure,” McDonald

explained. “We press all over the floor. Our defense leads a lot to offense. “Our speed of the game also helps and teams aren’t used to that,” continued the coach. “On defense we were playing well in this game. We were hitting shots and moving the ball on offense. We were getting rebounds, making the passes. “Caroline kept attacking the basket and they couldn’t stop her,” said McDonald. WRESTLING In a Section Three match against Elco on Wednesday, the Braves came up short in a 57-24 final. The Raiders improved to 3-2 in the league while the Braves fell to 2-4. The fact that Pequea forfeited at three different weight classes did not help the cause. The 18-point swing was difficult to overcome. The Braves got off to a 6-0 start with Gabe Miller posting a pin at the 152-pound weight class. He did so 1:37 into the match. The two teams traded pins, including Jace Beegle’s pin for Pequea at 120. The Braves suffered a close loss at 132 where Elco’s Trenton Brubaker eked out a 3-1 overtime victory over Tyler Anderson. Art Festival Receives Honor The art festival of Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation was recently rated the best Art Fair on the East Coast and one of the top 50 in the nation by ArtFair Calendar.com, a juried fine art fair and art shows listings website promoting attendance at art fairs, craft shows, and art festivals nationwide. Close to 1,000 nominations were received online, and there were more than 2,000 voters. The surveys asked participants to select their five favorite art fairs and craft shows and which one is the best. The factors judged included quality of art, venue setting and ambiance, affordability/wide price range, family-friendly

/children’s activities, number of exhibitors, location, accessibility, parking, variety of media, and food and music. The America’s Best Art Fairs Awards are based on online voting by art fair patrons, collectors, organizers, and artists, both regionally and nationally. The national survey of art fairs and festivals is designed to recognize achievement in art fair event production and promote the cultural importance of fine art events across America. All proceeds from the art festival fund the Summer Music Series each year. To learn more, readers may visit www.longspark.org.
