Worship 3:16 Musicians band together for special events BY ANN MEAD ASH

The band called 3:16, organized by Joe Liptock, music director and worship leader at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 753 Mount Zion Road, Narvon, has interesting beginnings. “It started two years (ago) in April when we did the

Ray Brubacher event,” recalled Liptock, who noted that the five band members also serve on the church worship team. At the event, Brubacher told the inspirational story of his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Given a 3% chance to live, Brubacher found that his faith, family, and friends, along See 3:16 pg 2

Education preparation Kicking off to kindergarten them,” noted Eckert, who added that information on community resources such as the Community Action Program before- and afterschool programs will be included, as will display tables for both Paradise and Salisbury elementary schools. Connecting with the early learning program at the kickoff will give families the chance to attend upcoming free activities, such as a four-week STEM connections program planned for March. “We will have transition nights at the end of April and into May,” said Eckert. Transition nights focus on topics such as literacy, math, or social and emotional learning. Kindergarten screenings will also be held in April, and summer camp is planned for June. “All these activities help prepare them for kindergarten,” said Eckert. Eckert requests that families wishing to attend the Feb. 5 kickoff register at http://tinyurl .com/KickoffPV. Reaching out to space BY ANN MEAD ASH

Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), is looking forward to holding the organization’s annual Winter Field Day, and he would like to make contact with the International Space Station during that event. “We are hoping to utilize the International Space Station and other satellites that have radios on board,” said Van Patten, who noted that the two entities have connected in the past. “I can’t guarantee that will happen again, but it was a nice surprise when

it did.” Van Patten added that a number of astronauts currently on the space station have their amateur radio license. The 2024 event, presented by RRR, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group plans to begin setting up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well See RRR pg 4

e l pi n g Pe q ue a Va l le y School District (PVSD) families prepare their eligible children for the start of kindergarten is a goal for Lisa Eckert, director of early learning for the district. “ We start in September trying to reach our families that will have a child registering for kindergarten the following year,” explained Eckert. “We want them to register early, and then they can participate in all the activities we have for them.” This year’s Kick Off to Kindergarten 2024 event (formerly Kindergarten Expo) is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The event is designed for those whose children will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2024. Eckert pointed out that this year’s event is a drop-in and that it differs from the expos held in the past. “The last two years we

opened registration the first week of February and had everyone come at the end, but this year, registration will open the day of the kickoff,” explained Eckert. “We will have all the information they need to register, so if they want to register that night, they can.” Eckert noted that parents may also just drop off paperwork or just get the information they need to start the process. Since the goal of the evening is to start preparing children and their parents for school, a variety of focused stations will be offered. According to Eckert, several stations will be dedicated to signing up for upcoming events, such as transition nights, or registering to receive a Kindergarten Readiness Kit. “We will have a fun area for photo ops with the kindergarten banner,” said Eckert, who also mentioned crafts and activity stations based on literacy and math, where children and parents can work together. “(These are) so they can get the idea of what they should be working on at home with their learners to help prepare

vocalist Travis Messner. Among the many songs the band plays are “How Great Is Our God,” “Amazing Grace,” “There’s Power in the Blood,” and “Good, Good Father.” The band plays additional music by Zach Williams, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, and Lauren Daigle. “We do some country (songs),” said Cooper, who mentioned “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver as one of the selections. “ We recite John 3:16 before all our music events,” shared Liptock. “Our mission is to bring people to Christ through music.” “We will throw in some secular songs such as ‘If I Can Dream’ by Elvis,” said Liptock, who noted that band members take turns on lead vocals, depending on the song. Liptock, a lifelong musician, began piano lessons as a child, and he later studied drums and voice.

He began playing professionally as a teenager, and he played on the same stage with well-known musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Porter Wagoner, and Waylon Jennings. He first became involved in church music in 1995, and he served at several Pennsylvania churches before joining Mount Zion in 2014. Conners said that he and Liptock have been friends for 40 years and that they probably have 90 years o f mu s ic a l ex p e r ie nce between them. Originally from Philadelphia, Conners moved to northern New Hampshire in 1990. He oversaw entertainment at The Balsams in Dixville Notch, N.H., and worked professionally in the Lakes Region and Concord. Cooper was raised in a Baptist tradition in the warmth of the Bahamas, where she said it is common to know most everyone. However, the economy

presented struggles, and in 2016, when she was in eighth grade, Cooper moved to the Narvon area. She began playing with the Mount Zion worship team soon after that. She said she has grown to like the local area. Liptock praised her skills as a percussionist, calling her the “heart and soul of the band.” Messner grew up in East Earl. He became known for his vocal skills at Garden Spot High School as part of an a capella group. He serves 3:16 as the group’s tenor vocalist. “(Travis is) also an excellent drummer,” said Liptock, who noted that Messner is featured on “I Can Only Imagine,” “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” and “If I Can Dream.” Mount Zion currently holds adult Sunday school at 9 a.m. and worship at 10:15 a.m. A Bible study is held on Thursdays at 6 p.m. More information may be found at http://mzum church.net.

Employment can be considered an honor and privilege, and some believe that everyone should have equal access to work. It’s a belief that Occupational Development Center (ODC) has grown into over these last 75 years. “It’s a situation where we’ve all had great jobs we ’ve loved,” said Ken Mueller, ODC ’s public relations and development manager. “But we’ve all had jobs we don’t love. I got to go to work today, and I enjoy what I do, even though there are challenges. A lot of people don’t want to hire individuals with disabilities. ... Our folks want to do their jobs. They don’t complain about work. They complain when they don’t have the work.” Located at 640 Martha Av e . , L a n c a s t e r, O D C trains and helps employ individuals with emotional and mental disabilities. On Thursday, Feb. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., ODC will recognize its 75th anniversary with a Founder’s Day celebration and See ODC pg 7

ODC from pg 5 became known as the Child Development Center.” The Child Development Center was designed to provide instruction to children with disabilities in an attempt to assimilate them into the community. “In 1958, the state mandated special education in schools, and there wasn’t a need for what we were doing ,” Mueller added. “That’s when we made the shift to the occupation center. What we do has changed over the years, but we’ve been doing it for a long time.” Typically, ODC trains young individuals with disabilities who have graduated from high school around the age of 21.

Occupational Development Center clients build confidence from being gainfully employed.

ODC accepts those people around age 24, after they’ve had three years to search for employment on their own. Currently, ODC is working with 35 individuals with disabilities from all over Lancaster County. At one time that number was over 100 individuals. “A t t h e b a s e l e v e l , our clients are getting a paycheck,” said Mueller. “There’s pride that comes from earning a paycheck. There’s pride that comes f ro m d o i n g a j o b a n d doing it well. We want to bring them a level of independence. Some live at home. Some live in group settings. Some live as individuals.” ODC partners with local b u s i ne s s e s to de ve lo p skills and confidence, in both in-house and community settings. “The idea is to get them out in the community and get them to know what they like to do,” said Mueller. “We have helped a lot of individuals over the years. But we’re not just helping the individuals; we’re also helping the families. They see the difference it makes helping

just that one individual.” “These individuals are no different than you and I,” Mueller continued. “They have dreams. They have passions. They have the same interests we have. They should be able to seek employment. ... We’re here to assist them and enable them and help them find their way through life.” For additional information about Occupational Development Center, go to www.odcenter.org.

From Doug: The life of discipleship is “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” The journey begins when we recognize who God is and who we are and call to Him as Psalm 130 discusses. My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. He is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute and Lancaster Bible College, where he met his wife, Janet. They live in Strasburg and have three children and three grandchildren and counting.
