Transitions - Petra Under New Leadership BY ANN MEAD ASH

On Jan. 3, Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, held a special service during which a new senior pastor took on the mantle of leadership. After nearly 40 years helming the church, senior pastors Lester and Erma Zimmerman retired, and Brian Coles became the new lead pastor. Brian and his wife, Tracy, first joined the Petra ministerial staff as

student ministries pastors in 2016. Tracy now serves as Petra’s local outreach pastor, and Lester will move into an expanded role providing leadership and oversight to the Hopewell Network of Churches to which Petra belongs. Noting Petra’s long history in New Holland, Brian, who grew up in Phoenixville, referred to the church’s initial service in a local fire hall in January of 1983, which attracted between 50 and 80 people. Remodeled Factory Market Opens n Jan. 4, The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, held a ribbon cutting to open its new Factory Market. The event, which was broadcast via Facebook Live, was facilitated by Factory Ministries executive director Adam Nagle and market director Kerri Burns. The remodeled market was based on Burns’ vision for a place that would offer dignity and affirmation to those who utilize the market. Nagle opened the event by introducing Burns and noting the role she played in the redesign of the market space. “This was her vision,” he said. “This has come from her head and heart.” “I hope that this space will be a bright spot in someone’s day,” Burns said. “I hope (Factory clients) leave encouraged by a kind word or conversation they had here.” Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory, joined the event electronically from her home. “The market plays a key role

connection. Nagle also credited the Paradise-area community with donating many items for the market through Food Fridays, an effort launched in April 2020 that invites area residents to drop food outside at The Factory from 9 a.m. to noon each Friday. Burns thanked Nagle for helping make her vision a reality by putting time and energy into the project. Nagle responded, “I am big on space feeling good because space communicates so much. When you had this vision, I said, ‘Let’s step behind this and make it happen.’” Nagle closed the ribbon-cutting ceremony with a prayer that all who shop at the market would feel dignity and care. He thanked God for volunteer time and energy, and he prayed that Burns’ heart and hope for Factory clients would be evident to those who enter the space. Nagle noted that the cooler was purchased with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that is given to organizations to help reduce food waste. The barn door was a gift from the Intercourse Lions Club, and two of the walls were built by the Pequea Valley High School ninth grade CORE career readiness program. Club Honors Students From Three Schools

To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant

Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative. Funds will be distributed to schools in March. The service was the beginning of a journey of growth and commitment. “The storyline of Petra is the story of a changing church, said Brian. “They were changing, moving, and evolving for 38 years. That openness to growth, Brian pointed out has resulted in a well-grounded entity. “The interesting thing about Petra is that it is such a stable piece of the local community, he noted. “It is an honor being involved in that. Brian and Tracy, who is originally from the Williamsburg area, met while both were attending the University of Valley Forge located in Phoenixville. Brian earned a degree in pastoral counseling there, while Tracy’s degree is in elementary education. “Our first pastoral role was in Moorestown, N.J., at Maranatha Christian Fellowship, said Brian. The couple served the independent church from 2008 until 2016. Gradually, Brian and Tracy felt God moving them in a new direction. “ We both sensed it was time for us to transition from our previous church, said Brian, who noted that the couple began the interview process, completing their assignment in Moorestown only a few days

Bible Study from pg 1 peacemaker, being salt and light in a dark world and also our relationships with others, said Connell. Connell added that rather than dividing the sermon, the author has set up the study so that participants will consider the whole sermon to see how they should navigate the world we live in. “The Art of Parenting is a video-based study designed to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring 40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the subject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “We have an

obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord. They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. and Beverages; Soups and Salads; Vegetables and Side Dishes; Main Dishes; Breads and Rolls; Desserts; Cookies and Candy; and This and That. “We began compiling the recipes for the cookbook in the beginning of October; all recipes were due by the end of October,” explained Scout mom Heather Jackson. “All Scouts were asked to submit as many recipes as they would like. They could ask anyone in their family for recipes.” Many of the recipes in the book are distinct because they are unique to each family, such as “Grandma’s Gobs,” which are sandwich cookies filled with icing, and “Porcupine Meatballs,” which are meatballs containing rice. Some recipes use slow cookers, such as the one for “Absolutely Ultimate Potato Soup.” There is also a recipe for slow cooker hot chocolate. Once the recipes were compiled, Jackson found a publishing company, Morris Press, which created the book. “They have a ‘type and save’ program, where we typed all the recipes into their program,” she said. “This program (also) allowed us to choose our art that was in the book as well as write a little history on our troop.” In addition to the history and the assortment of recipes, the cookbook contains many helpful hints for home cooks. All of the recipes are included in the easy-to-use index. “It was a lot of work typing and putting together the book, but it was fun reading all the different and sometimes same recipes with the different families’ twists on them,” Jackson shared. Proceeds for each book will benefit troop members. Onethird will go to the whole troop to pay for activities and help with Scouts who have financial needs. One-third will go to each Scout’s High Adventure account, which pay for trips to Camp Philmont, Sea Base or Algonquin. “The last third is for each Scout to use for our monthly camping trips or to pay yearly dues,” Jackson noted. Jackson said the cookbook has been a good way to raise money during the pandemic. “Most of the construction was done online,” she noted. “Pickup for books while selling (can) be contactless. I know personally my Scout has sold most of the books through asking family members to post on their social media pages. We did post on the Octorara Community Facebook page as well.” Cookbooks are also being sold at the Brass Eagle Restaurant, 5725 Lincoln Highway, Gap, and at Turkey Hill’s Gap location. CareerLink Offers Free Employment Help “We are workforce specialists,” commented Judy Wechter, site administrator for Pennsylvania CareerLink Lancaster County. “We provide job training and supports for individuals who are displaced and currently looking for employment, and we are an outlet for the county for employment and workforce resources.” The CareerLink facility is located in the same building as Liberty Place, 1016 N. Charlotte St., Lancaster, but during the pandemic nearly all of its services are offered solely online. “Everything can be done virtually except physically working on a computer. We hope to, in January, allow people to come in to use a computer,” Wechter said. “We are very sensitive to people who don’t have technology or don’t have internet access. We are working on providing WiFi in the parking lot.” CareerLink provides three levels of service, and clients may choose which to use. The self-service option features a career resource room where individuals may use computers to conduct job searches, update resumes, file Unemployment Compensation (UC)

claims, and print or fax jobrelated documents. The enhanced service includes computer usage as well as attendance at workshops, job fairs, and other activities offered by CareerLink. Personalized service - the top tier - includes a career navigator who provides personalized assistance as the client explores career options. The navigator can administer assessments of interests and strengths, interpret the results, and help clients determine what they need to access those careers. Wechter noted that $10,000 per person is available for up to two years of training in high occupancy careers. Soft skills training and computer-read resume development are also available. “You need to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can to find a job today,” Wechter said, adding that CareerLink can help both laborers and executives find meaningful work. “Nowadays, everybody needs help.” Wechter knows whereof she speaks, as she has been a CareerLink client three times. “My success in finding employment was due to CareerLink. (It) gave me the support I needed,” she said. CareerLink is not about just

LOHF Approves Program Funds finding employment, Wechter asserted. “It’s setting you on a career path,” she said. “We meet people where they are. The goal is a sustainable career.” When appropriate, career navigators will refer clients to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. The two organizations collaborate and support clients where possible. Wechter noted that CareerLink is not the UC office, although it does provide assistance with filing initial claims, and when the building is open, it has a direct phone line to the UC office in Harrisburg. Additionally, CareerLink is not a staffing agency, and it does not provide jobs for anyone. All of CareerLink’s services are free of charge, as it is funded by state and federal legislation as well as grants. Wechter recommended that anyone who wants to learn more about the available services call the Job Seeker and Employer Help Line, 844-7448451, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. After 11 weeks of fundraising, collecting donations and volunteering, the results for Central Penn College’s KnightQuest: Combat Hunger were recently announced. The philanthropic campaign, powered by 25 teams of students, employees, alumni and community members, raised $7,400; collected more than 3,000 donated items; and contributed over 100 volunteer hours to fight food insecurity in central Pennsylvania. The original monetary goal for Combat Hunger was $4,500, which the campaign surpassed by nearly $3,000. The Braves tipped off the L-L League portion of their schedule against the Dutchmen on Tuesday. In a bizarre second half, PV outscored Annville 24-9 in the third quarter and had to plug the hole in the dam as the Dutchmen came back with a 24-13 run in the fourth. Pequea Valley survived 65-47. The game had a special significance for Colyer, who reached his 1,000 point. The senior claimed the top total for points on the night, pouring in 22, including a pair of treys. His 20th point helped him reach the four digits in career scoring. Stoltzfus scored 16 and Peifer kept the points coming, contributing 11. Nicholas Malloy led Annville with 17 points, including three treys. The Braves hit the road on

Wednesday night, visiting Columbia. The Crimson Tide, already holding a 39-28 halftime lead, outscored the Braves 22-12 in the third quarter enroute to a 79-54 victory. Pequea fell to 1-2 (1-1 league). Colyer and the Tide’s Michael Poole, Jr. shared the game’s top scoring honors with 20 points each. Colyer had a season-best four treys. Stoltzfus and Lazar each scored nine with all of Stoltzfus’s points coming from downtown. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Pequea Valley played host to Columbia in a Section Five girls’ basketball game on Wednesday evening. The Crimson Tide, led by Brie Droege’s 22-point effort, posted a 59-43 victory. The Braves’ scoring leaders were Brooke Liney and Rebecca Cox. Liney drilled four threepoint shots and went 2-for-2 at the foul line for a total of 14 points. Cox scored eight points while Shania Stoltzfus and Sarah Arment each scored six.

FENCING SPECIALISTS Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717544-0170, option 2.

you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Encouraging blood donations is “a no-brainer,” Millersville Borough PD Lt. Jeffrey Margevich commented, adding, “It saves lives. That’s the whole key.” “Donating blood is an interesting way to help the community,” Pequea Township PD Chief John Michener remarked. “You never know who you might be saving. It could be your own (life) or your family member’s.” To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancastergeneral health.org/lgh/our -services/blood-bank/about -us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Bleed Blue from pg 8 Bleed Blue Challenge. “Anytime you can inject an amount of fun … and drive up the amount of blood in storage … it’s better.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster.

The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age groups. The kindergarten class is coed, but first and second grades, third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades are divided by gender. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month,” said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball.” Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a shuttle run, and the V-sit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed

“I knew you would help with rental assistance and emergency aid, but I didn’t know you would help with Christmas,” a mother exclaimed when Santa Claus - neighboring volunteer Phil Bergey in disguise - visited six family clients of Bridge of Hope Lancaster. Director Audrey Metzler noted that the visits were a surprise for the children, but the mothers were just as excited. Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Bridge of Hope Chester County work with families facing homelessness, providing comprehensive case management and neighboring, a connection between a family and a group of volunteers from a local church.
