Advocating For Elementary Students ODC Presents First Stoner Awards

By Ann Mead Ash

As a member of Grace Point Church, Karla Neff, who became director of PV (Pequea Valley) elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries in August 2019, has been involved with The Factory Ministries most of her life. However, she was not planning to work there when she graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 2013 and began studying early childhood education at Liberty University. During college, Neff spent time doing community development and developing holistic programs in the South Pacific in Fiji. “(I was at) a farm where they taught (people) how to grow things and through that cared for people and had conversations and built

In late summer and early fall of 2019, Occupational Development Center (ODC), 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, presented the first Olivia S. Stoner Awards. The organization has designated that two awards, named for one of ODC’s founders, will be given each year. “One is to go to an individual or group of individuals and another to a business, explained Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC. “The awards will be given to those who embody the spirit and vision of Olivia Stoner, said Mueller, adding that recipients will be recognized for reflecting Stoner’s commitment to creating a better life for individuals with disabilities. While Lucas is a busy guy, he does not think of his work with the team in terms of job duties. “It’s a lot of fun doing this, he said. “We’re not just a team. It’s kind of like a family. for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem, stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a trauma-informed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how the adult can best work with the child to address the behavior. Eshleman encourages adults to stay positive and open-minded in their interactions with others. Anyone interested in partnering with the ACT Foundation or in hosting one of the organization’s courses is welcome to contact Jeanne Dailey, director of operations, at 717-808-7134 or

The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers trauma-informed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that

they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life, stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure. According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control

dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse childhood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are), summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and well-being and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in students. Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and others who are interested. In the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training

Ephrata Thunder from pg 1 with local teams invited to take part. Local sponsors also have opportunities to suit up and participate. On Jan. 5, local dentist Sean Moriarty, wearing jersey No. 13, left the bench for the court just before halftime. At halftime, a local dance team took to the floor to perform. The Thunder’s final home game is slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, versus the West Chester Wildcats, at 7 p.m. Malin was coaching basketball at Lititz Christian School, where Lucas was a student, when a fellow coach suggested she consider coaching for the ABA. Malin has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. At the age of 15, she

The Thunder began playing in the area in the fall of 2019 as part of the American Basketball Association (ABA), which has teams in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The team’s mascot is Bolt, a yellow bolt of lightning against a purple background. The team was formed by Pottstown native Stephen Bergman Sr., but Malin recently became the team owner, making her the only female head coach and owner in the league, which boasts more than 150 teams. In mid-January, the team was ranked 16th in the league. Each home game has had a special theme, with the final game being Ladies Night. End-of-January games featured a high school theme,

was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school. “We train, and we get graded in basketball,” explained Malin, who was chosen as a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world championships in Turkey in 1990. After high school, Malin moved to Israel to play semiprofessional ball while studying Hebrew. She returned to Sweden and continued her studies while working as a trainer for a team that played American football. Two of the team’s players were American, and when she played basketball against them, they suggested she play for a college team in the United States. “I got to go to Wilmington College to play basketball,” said Malin, who later transferred to the University of Delaware, eventually earning a degree in physical therapy and Jewish studies. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The professional National Basketball Association developed out of the ABA in the 1960s. Well-known players, like Julius Erving, got their starts in the league. A few of the Thunder players are from Lancaster County. “Tyler Mercer, No. 35, is from Ephrata High School, and he is our youngest player,” said Malin of the 6-foot4-inch power forward. Guard Nasir McFadden, No. 10, played for Thaddeus Stevens, where he averaged 21 points per game. Quentin Davis, who attended Lancaster Bible College, has been playing semiprofessionally in Argentina, but he plays for the Thunder during his breaks.

Other players hail from Reading, Coatesville, and Philadelphia, while some are from as far away as Florida and Michigan. According to Lucas, Thunder games have been both close and exciting. “Last night we won by one point,” he said, referring to a Jan. 4 game against the Hub City Hogs in Hagerstown, Md. “Our point guard hit a last-second buzzer beater to win the game.” The home game on Jan. 5 was not low on excitement either, with the Thunder trailing for the entire first half and rallying just before the buzzer, but the shallow bench of the opposing Philadelphia Cannons team was a weakness Malin used to her advantage. Wearing the Cannons out, the Thunder triumphed 130 to 126 at the end of the game. For more information on the Thunder, visit www.ephratathunder.com.

Elementary Students from pg 1 relationships,” said Neff, who recognized that The Factory Ministries embraced a similar effort in her own Paradise community. After making that connection, Neff was intrigued. “I have always had a passion for that, so coming back and seeing that happen in my own community was really cool,” said Neff. As part of her degree, Neff served as a student teacher in the West Chester area. She also interned at The Factory Ministries before graduating in 2019. “In my internships, I focused on programming for adults and elementary-age children,” said Neff, who ran a cooking class for students with guidance on nutrition from Lancaster General Health. During the internship, a conversation began to occur about whether Neff’s work could lead to an advocacy position for

Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) elementary school students. The conversation involved Tim Rogers, pastor at Grace Point; Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates with The Factory; PVSD superintendent Eric Orndorff; and assistant superintendent Rich Eby. The position the group created utilizes funding from PVSD, Community Action Program, and The Factory Ministries. “It’s a really unique position,” said Neff, who focuses on creating programming and walking alongside elementary learners. As part of the First Ten Initiative, Neff works with children ages 5 to 10. Neff will also work with elementary-age children in families that stay at the Crisis Housing Center, which The Factory recently opened. Neff has already started an art club, which works with 12 students to create artistic items from recycled materials. “Community members come in to help with the relational side of (the club),” she said, explaining that the program assigns first- through third-grade students one project and fourth- through sixth-grade students a separate project. “We have different projects each week,” she said, noting that one of the projects, called a monster mash-up, utilized recycled bottles and egg cartons to make monsters. At the end of the semester, an exhibit of the artwork was held. Neff also oversees the Strengthening Families program, which is a seven-week research-based program for parents with children ages 10 to 14 funded in part by a Penn Medicine grant. “The program is about showing love and setting limits,” said Neff, who noted that the agenda includes dinner for families and then separate presentations about similar material for children and parents. “It’s a collaborative (effort) working with social workers and guidance counselors from the school district,” said Neff. The next program will hold its graduation ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 20. Neff is hoping to start a mentorship program to pair students with community members. “That will be the next level of relationship,” she said, noting that plans include a pilot program in the spring. “I am passionate about people feeling cared for,” said Neff. “Those programs are proven to help with success in school, college, career, and in life.” Readers who would like more information about the programs may call 717687-9594 and ask for Neff.

One of the songs being performed at the Pequea Valley Intermediate School winter band concert called for a unique percussion instrument called the marching machine. This machine features a series of suspended wooden blocks that mimics the footfalls of marching feet. It can be purchased, but band director James Ackerman saw the band’s need as an opportunity for a crosscurricular project. Ackerman approached science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teacher Jamiel Smoker to see if it would be a suitable project for some members of the class. Smoker agreed and assigned four learners - Paul McGinley, Owen

Watson asked for more details of its manufacture so he could share it on his social media sites and website for other schools to use as a template for a similar experience. To view a short video about the instrument, visit www.youtube.com/ watch?v=oaaZQhIbYNw.

Pierce, Owen Hartmann, and Sean Ammon - to the project. With a basic plan found online, the learners used an online design program called Tinkercad and conferred with Ackerman regarding size, materials, and timetable. For the next few months, they used class time in STEM class, under Smoker’s guidance, to laminate sapele wood for the frame rails, create the blocks, and sand and finish all the parts. Along the way, the learners checked with Ackerman regarding questions of design and supply. Within a few months, the marching machine was completed and ready for use in band rehearsals. Horst Scores 27 in PV’s Win Over Blazers by Ara Grigorian

The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team remained on the heels of Lancaster Country Day in the Section Five standings thanks to a 5849 defeat of Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday night. The victory on their home court improved the Braves’ record to 6-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League - only two games behind unbeaten LCD. The Braves improved to 12-4 overall - an impressive mark with about half a dozen games remaining in the regular season. “We’re trying to make leagues and to keep the power rankings up for seeding in the districts,” said Jason McDonald, the PV head coach. Following the defeat of Mennonite, the Braves held a strong third-ranked seeding in the District Three ClassAAA power rankings. The Tuesday night game at Kinzers featured two high-scoring shooters - one from each side. The Blazers’ Mariah Wilson scored a game-high 29 points. Pequea’s Caroline Horst scored 27. “Mariah shot the ball 33 times,” said McDonald. “We knew we were going to see her take a lot of shots. She went 13 for 33 from the field.” Horst was 12 for 22 and went 3-for-4

at the foul line. She had 12 rebounds four assists and four steals. “It was a complete team victory,” said McDonald “Caroline carried us in scoring. Bethany Bills had 14 rebounds. Rebecca Cox scored 11 points. Clara Neff had nine rebounds. It was a complete game offensively and defensively. We took care of the ball on offense and executed well,” added the coach. Cox scored 11 and Abbey Leslie added seven. They each hit one threepointer as did Neff, who finished with six points. The Braves were coming off a 53-31 victory at Annville-Cleona the previous Friday - January 17. They outscored the Little Dutchmen in three of the four quarters. Horst led the scoring with 16 points while Bills put up 12 for the Braves. Cox also finished in double digits, scoring 11. “We played very well in the second half,” said McDonald, noting that the Braves outscored the home team 29-13 after intermission. “They played good defense against us in the first half. It took us a while to get going. “Clara, Bethany, Rebecca and Clara had good games,” he added. Emily Brightbill led the Dutchmen with 14 points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Pequea Valley boys’ basketball team is happy that the week, which ended with Friday, January 17 game at Annville-Cleona is over. “That was our sixth game in eight nights for us,” said head coach Thad Rittenhouse. “In the AnnvilleCleona game we were also missing our second-leading scorer Nevin Stoltzfus. We were physically tired but we battled. Annville shot the ball extremely well.” The Braves came up short 58-35 after the Dutchmen had jumped out to a 22-10 lead by the end of the first. The Dutchmen, who were led by Andrew Long’s 31 points (six treys), only outscored the Braves 17-16 in the second half. Tuesday night’s league game at Lancaster Mennonite was a close one at intermission. The Blazers led by only two points, but outscored the Braves 29-19 in the second half to post a 55-43 win. Devon Colyer brought his A-game and scored 22 points. Sean Liney dropped in three treys and finished with 12. “We did well defensively, throughout the game,” Rittenhouse said. “We had a couple of turnovers at the end of the third quarter and also in the fourth quarter. We played an excellent game in the first half. We struggled to score in the second half but wound up with a close game. We are close in these games this year and are more prepared. “We have progressed from big losses last year to single-digit losses,” the coach continued. “The first time we played them, they only had

a five- or six-point lead on us early in the fourth quarter.” The Blazers improved to 6-1 in the league while Pequea fell to 3-4 (7-10 overall). “Sean Liney got in trouble,” Rittenhouse explained. “He and Josh Jarvis rebounded well. He was a big lift offensively in the first half of the game. Him having to sit out parts of the second half hurt us.” Liney had nine points for Pequea. Antonio Lazar had a team-high 12 while Colyer scored 11. The Dutchmen’s Andrew Long had a brilliant night, scoring 31.

Participants of all ages and disabilities are welcome to take part in the pageant, which will include a variety of categories. Individuals who take part may choose the categories in which they wish to participate. “There will be a photogenic category, and participants may perform a talent if they like,” said Kim, who added that a runway modeling category will include formal wear, fun fashion, swimwear, and sleepwear. Kim’s daughter, Phoebe, who has Down syndrome, has competed in Cinderella pageants, contests that bill themselves as natural pageants featuring real children, since she was a baby. “She just loved it,” said Kim, whose older daughter competes in the Cinderella pageants as well. At the age of 8, Phoebe has reached a point where it is difficult for her to compete against others her age in the interview and talent categories. Last year, Kim entered Phoebe in the York County Stars pageant for children with special needs. Although Phoebe enjoyed taking part, Kim had a vision for a pageant that would offer something different. “I thought it would be great to have something where children and adults could just get on stage and do their thing,” she said. Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates has existed since 2014. The organization is parent- run with a five-member board. “We don’t work directly with families,” said Kim. “We work in the community with other groups.” In the past, the group worked with Excentia to create a first responder training program, which can be used with police, fire departments, and EMTs. “We can bring the training into their facility,” explained Kim. “That was one of our first big endeavors.” The group also worked with The Arc of Lancaster County. “We try to work with organizations that already exist to (enhance) what they do,” explained Kim. “Our goal is to increase advocacy in the communities.” Kim added that she and another board member have spoken to education majors at area colleges to help future teachers understand the mindset of the parent/advocate. Kim, who has experience coordinating Cinderella pageants, hopes members of the public will come to the event. “A big part of (the emphasis in staging the pageant) is that everybody has a gift to give,” she said. “Come and see children and adults on stage and see them dance, smile. I want to promote the gifts of people with disabilities,” she said. “There will be no winners or losers. Just come see how they shine.” There is no cost to take part in the pageant, but Kim would appreciate individuals registering by Sunday, Feb. 9, through the organization’s web page at www.lancasterdsa.org. More information may also be found by searching for “Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates” on Facebook. The pageant is a fundraiser. Admission for audience members will be by donation, and food items will be available for purchase. There will also be vendor booths and other activities. Funds raised by the event will be donated to organizations and opportunities such as Challenger Little League Baseball, Challenger Football/Cheer, and a scholarship for Aaron’s Acres Summer Camp.

award was given to Benjamin and Mignon Bowman. Now in their 90s, the couple has supported the work of the ODC, and its participants, for more than 50 years. Ben first became involved in the early 1960s as a member of the AMBUCS, which raised funds for ODC. In 1965, when Ben was heading up Wickersham Construction, the company built the second addition to the ODC building. Wickersham built the third addition in 1984. In the 1980s, Ben served as board president. “(The Bowmans) have been big supporters (of ODC),” said Mueller of Ben and Mignon, who have been generous with both their time and finances. Mignon is part of the ODC Auxiliary that raises money for the organization. “They are a sweet couple, and are still active with ODC in a variety of ways.” The second award was presented in October 2019 to Kinsey’s Outdoors in Mount Joy, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. “(Kinsey’s) has embraced the mission of ODC and our goal of finding meaningful employment for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Mueller, who added that Kinsey’s was ODC’s first small group employment site. “ODC individuals who work there alongside other employees have become a part of the Kinsey’s family,” said Mueller. “(ODC participants) love going out there.” The skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, where tasks

include folding and packing items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Gregg Richards, executive director of ODC, lauded the recipients of both awards. “I can’t say enough good things about them,” said Richards. “The awards are well deserved, and it’s wonderful to have support from such good people,” he said, adding, “In the case of the Bowmans, they literally built the building.” Stoner founded ODC along with Marian Headrick in 1948. She remained an integral part of the organization into the early 1980s. “(Stoner) served on the board

and was very active in what was being done (at ODC),” said Mueller. “She was a forward-thinking, proactive, and strong woman who really had a vision for ODC that was ahead of the times.” Stoner’s interest in founding ODC was tied to a nephew who had developmental disabilities and did not have many opportunities in the 1940s. “She didn’t like (his) options,” said Mueller. “Who we are (as an organization) today is based on her vision.” The Stoner Award is unique, so ODC sought an item to exemplify the Stoner vision by working with the glass blowers at the Stiegel Glassworks in Manheim.
