Local mission works Fundraiser concert to feature Summer Pearson BY ANN MEAD ASH
E
ach year, Mike Stoltzfus, an elder at Calvary Monument B i b l e C h u rc h ( C M B C ) , searches for entertainment to help raise funds for the church’s youth mission trip. This year, he found five different performers to propose to the committee. “They all chose Summer (Pearson),” recalled Stoltzfus, who noted that the beauty of Pearson’s voice is possibly the reason for the unanimous decision. Pearson, who is an awardwinning singer-songwriter, will give a concert at the church, at 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The concert will be free and open to the public. A freewill offering to benefit the summer youth mission trip will be received at the concert. Pearson recognized her love of reaching others through song at a young age when she soloed in Summer Pearson will give a free concert at Calvary Monument Bible Church church, but she pursued a career
as an attorney with the federal government before giving in to the call to use her powerful vocals to connect with others. She is the recipient of a number of awards, including the 2021 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival’s Musical Theatre Intensive Outstanding Vocalist title
“When it comes to missions, you don’t have to go out of state.” and the 2018 ACHI Magazine Songstress of the Year award. According to CMBC pastor Chris Lenhart, Pearson will share some of her story during the concert. Stoltzfus reported that Pearson’s selections will include contemporary worship songs along with love songs, since the concert is just a few days prior to Valentine’s Day. He also mentioned
rhythm and blues music. “She may throw in some Broadway (songs),” added Stoltzfus, who noted that Pearson was excited to learn that funds raised at the concert would benefit a youth mission trip. “(Pearson) was thrilled,” stated Stoltzfus. “She checked out our website, and she loved the direction our church was going,” he added. Youth pastor Josiah Reimold said that the current plan is for up to 25 youths from the church to spend five days working with Hub 450 at 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “Hub 450 provides connections for refugees settling in Lancaster,” said Lenhart. Reimold noted that the work is being organized through Eastern Mennonite Missions and that the students will work with young children of refugees on English as a Second Language skills. Neighbors Cafe and Community Center, which is part of Hub 450, is a multicultural gathering place for connecting, learning, and See CMBC pg 6

More than cute - a commitment
For the serious deer hunter “Hearing a deer biologist (speak) is pretty significant when it comes to understanding how to better hunt deer,” said Kevin Horning, member of the Ephrata Area Churches annual New Holland Sportsman Banquet committee. The guest speaker for this year’s event will be C.J. Winand, “Hunting Whitetails” columnist for Bowhunter magazine. As the committee approaches nearly two decades of organizing the event, finding an appealing speaker is always of the utmost importance, and Horning noted that the committee was pleased to secure Winand for this year’s banquet. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Friday, March 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m. so attendees C.J. Owning a pet is serious business BY ANN MEAD ASH
“There are so many things to consider when adopting a pet,” said Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, which oversees the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30 as well as the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading. “Those who have never been the primary caretaker, it’s difficult to see everything. from making a snap decision.” Different types of pets require different levels of care as do the individual pets, based on age and a variety of factors, and the commitment continues for up to 20 years depending on the pet. “I wish people would better manage the expectation that they will walk in and find a pet for them,” March pointed out. “Pets are not universal. They have wide-ranging personalities, and finding a good match for you is not always easy.” See Humane Pennsylvania pg 7

Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. According to Horning, 60 or more door prizes, which in the past have included rif les and bows, will be given away at the event as well. “We usually give away quite a few prizes, and they are pretty significant ones,” he said. As a speaker, Winand offers credentials that include a Master of Science in wildlife management from West Virginia University, where he studied under David Samuel, conservation editor for Bowhunter magazine. Winand has served on the Educational Review Committee for the National Rifle Association (NRA) Whitetail Deer Hunter Clinic, and he is a seminar speaker on the NRA’s Great American Hunters tour. Winand is known for presenting information heavy with data for the purpose of elevating a hunter’s ability to make good judgments. Banquet organizers are encouraging attendees to come prepared to take notes, and they have referred to Winand’s talks as “Advanced Deer Hunting 101.” Information presented will be based on field data research conducted by Winand or other wildlife biologists, which is then presented in a way that allows hunters to use scientific results in their own hunting techniques with the goal of harvesting bucks. This year’s dinner menu will include broasted chicken, ham balls, potatoes, peas and

Martin noted that the program offers students an opportunity to learn a trade while also engaging kids who might not thrive in a typical academic classroom. “These kids are hands-on. They’re not book learners,” he stated. “They get frustrated sitting at a desk. They want to be out working with their hands, and they will potentially have a great career after this.” The 40-some students working on two houses currently will go on to schools like T haddeus Stevens College of Technology after graduation or will enter the workforce directly. well. “I’ve been a boss and a business owner, and what I always wanted was kids who were willing to work, who wanted to work and wanted to learn,” he stated, “and these are those kids.” Senior Vivienne Nolt of Elizabethtown has enjoyed everything she’s learned from the House Project, including the challenge of installing drywall. She’s been interested in carpentry since she was very young. “The first thing I built when I was 4 was a little shelf,” she recalled. “I’ve always liked to build things. Seeing what you create at the end is the best part.” As a freshman at Pequea Valley High School, Katrina Kilby built a shed in a carpentry class and discovered a love for the work. Now a senior at LCCTC, she has had a hands-on part in much of the House Project. “I love seeing this go from nothing to a whole building or a whole house,” she said. “And I really like that it’s hands-on.” For senior Chase Travitz of Manheim, the House Project is providing realworld carpentry experience that he plans to take with him after graduation. He already has a job lined up with eciConstruction. “I’ve always wanted to do something hands-on with my life, and carpentry is something I love,” he said. “I love getting to work with my hands every day. It’s problem solving and learning something new every day.”

Wearing hardhats and safety goggles, a group of students is hard at work on the grounds of Lancaster County Career and Technolog y Center (LCCTC) in Mount Joy. T hey ’re building a home as part of the school’s House Project, and they’re also honing the skills they need for their future careers. Since 1989, students have constructed homes through the program. Initially, the construction sites were located throughout Lancaster County, but getting students to the sites was a challenge. In 2005, the school streamlined the process by subdividing sections of the Mount Joy campus into lots for future house projects. Building the homes takes place over two years and involves students in multiple areas of study, said Rick Martin, construction manager. Students in the carpentry program in Mount Joy are joined by LCCTC students in other fields of construction, including electrical work and plumbing, who come from the Brownstown campus. Instructors Mitchell Hinton and James Smith supervise the students. Once the home is complete, it’s sold on the open market. The most recent home completed by LCCTC students was a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house that sold in July of 2022 for $415,900. The proceeds from the sale are used to fund future house

Sometimes new pet owners are not prepared for the costs associated with the animal’s care and feeding. Melissa Detrick, owner and administrator of Honey Brook Animal Hospital, said that knowing what is best to feed a particular animal is important, but that owners should also be prepared for the costs of first-year visits, which may include vaccinations, neutering, and preventatives. Pet-sitting and grooming expenses will come into play with certain types of pets, as well. “My advice to pet owners, especially new pet owners, i s m u l t i f a c e t e d ,” s a i d Detrick. “Do the research before taking the leap.” Detrick pointed out that practicing preventive care combined with a balanced diet and maintaining a good relationship with the animal’s vet is all important. She also recommended considering pet insurance. A ccording to March, when a relationship does not work out between a pet and an owner, the

To foster more successful pet ownership, Humane Pennsylvani a seek s to counsel would-be pet owners with questions about lifestyle, time and interest in working with a pet, and expenses. March noted that getting a puppy is probably the most challenging of pet adoptions, pointing out that those who like to travel spontaneously might do better with a lower-maintenance cat. Training , both house training and behavior modification, is most important and time-consuming with puppies. “Housebreaking (is) a pretty major thing, but there are other things, and one of the most important is the general manners,” emphasized March, who noted that laying down house rules from the first day and enforcing them 24/7 is key. “When people return puppies, it’s because they underestimated how much work those general behaviors would be,” he said. “One of the bigger mistakes with a very young puppy is to delay the beginning of that training. As dogs mature, allowing behaviors to persist can lead to really undesirable behaviors such as barking or growling over

Millersville-based wildlife rehabilitation center Acorn Acres will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 2, in downtown Lancaster. The festivities will kick off at Ville & Rue, 8 W. King St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The celebration will continue with an all-ages Groundhog Day party from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Imperial, 26 E. Chestnut St. Both events will be free to attend. At 11:30 a.m., Acorn Acres ambassador Elliott the groundhog will predict the weather forecast for the remaining winter months. This will be Elliott’s first prognostication, as the yearly ritual was previously completed by the wildlife center’s former mascot, Poppy. After Poppy’s death last February, Elliott has taken over the late groundhog’s responsibilities as the face of Acorn Acres. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at Ville & Rue, and Poppy-themed items such as pillows, tea towels and tote bags will be available to purchase. Once the party moves to the Imperial, guests may enjoy various family-friendly activities including groundhog-themed crafts, cornhole, Jenga and live entertainment. A game of bingo will begin at 5 p.m., but there will be a twist: Players must yell “groundhog” to redeem a winning card. At 6 p.m., an educational program featuring Elliott will be held to offer guests information on groundhogs, followed by Elliott’s second prognostication at 7 p.m. for this year’s National Football L ea g ue championship. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available until the winning numbers are selected at 8 p.m., and food and drinks will be available to purchase from a cash bar before the party wraps up. Trad i t i o n a l l y, A co r n Acres celebrates Groundhog Day with a scavenger hunt in Lancaster city. The event was created in 2021 by the organization’s founder, Betsy Shank, who sought a way to support local businesses in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I happened to have an Emmy-nominated and very cute groundhog,
so I used Poppy’s popularity to draw people to downtown businesses,” Shank said. Poppy acquired national fame after she appeared alongside Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League championship game in 2020. Shank decided to change the format of the event after Elliott took over as Acorn Acres’ mascot. Although Poppy was always comfortable in the limelight, Elliott is a younger and much more reserved groundhog. With this in mind, Shank redesigned the event to still support local businesses without overwhelming Elliott. Several businesses located in Quarryville, Conestoga and other parts of the Southern End have donated prizes and other items for the celebration, including Britain Hill Winery, Conestoga Cookies and Hempfield Botanicals. Acorn Acres’ facility is located in Millersville, but its service area covers most of the county. In the past, the organization has taken

in animals that were found as far south as Wakefield, and Shank has assisted wildlife centers in other counties by taking in one of their rescues. “We want people to just come out, be happy and
enjoy Groundhog Day,” Shank said. “This all started to get people smiling, even from behind a mask. We’re still doing that.” For more information, visit www.acornacreswr .com/groundhog-day.
