Fighting Cavities In PVSD
BY ANN MEAD ASHPequea Valley School District (PVSD) nurse Robin McCracken, who oversees students in grades seven through 12, is well aware of the statistics related to dental cavities. “It’s the most common (unmet health need) according to the CDC,” said McCracken, who added that dental health problems can affect overall health, but the good news is that they are preventable.
Together with nurse Joy Lewis, who works with kindergarten through sixth-grade students, and others in the PVSD, McCracken is hoping to battle those statistics among local students. “Education is a focus with teachers and school nurses in our district,” said Lewis. During February, which is National Children’s Dental Health Month, second-grade PVSD students will take part in a brushing challenge. “We will go over why we brush and how often, and students will have a chart they can color in,” said Lewis.
A Look In The Mirror
Welsh Mountain Historical Presentations Will Examine Racial Attitudes
BY ANN MEAD ASHFor a few years now, the Racial Literacy Team of Garden Spot Village (GSV) has been meeting to discuss issues of racial equity and justice. Now, members of that group, in cooperation with the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) and GSV’s Lighter Side Players, have developed a program that incorporates Welsh Mountain history in a look back at prevailing attitudes toward race in the past and now.

Later in the month, representatives of Byrnes Health Education Center in York will visit the elementary schools to teach about dental health.
Members of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Health Club will also take part in the February
activities, and members will prepare to host a booth focused on dental health education at the PVHS Spring Fling in May. Using hardened marshmallows to represent teeth, high school students will ask youngsters who attend the Fling to
floss away bits of clay stuck between the marshmallows. “High school (students) teaching elementary (students) makes things more fun,” said McCracken.

Around 1851, there emerged along the boundary of Chester and Lancaster counties a group of thieves, counterfeiters and bounty hunters known as the “Gap Gang.” So successful were the gang members’ exploits, no one could ever actually prove that they were the perpetrators of crimes.
The leader appears to have been William Blank, whose high social standing may have protected him from suspicion. It was never proven that he had any connections with the gang, although circumstantial evidence did get him convicted of robbery several times.
The gang specialized in two activities - bounty hunting and stealing clover seed, though horses were also considered fair game. There was no quibbling over whether a person of color they captured was a runaway slave or a freeborn Northerner; any black person they could grab meant a profitable night. The Gap
Today, clover is grown as a cover crop, but when it was introduced 175 years ago, clover seed was extremely expensive, up to $25 a bushel (60 pounds), which is equal to more than $100 in today’s market. By stealing 10 or 15 bushels in a night, the thieves could make a profit far greater than by stealing horses.
Success was almost always on the side of the Gap Gang, for the goods were sold through agents in other states. This made them very hard to trace.
The gang gained enough notoriety to be blamed for just about any suspicious disappearance of goods from the neighborhood or any crime. In

The rest of the gang members decided things were getting too dangerous and moved away, many to join the Civil War in 1863. But their reputation lived on with such strength that people blamed the Gap Gang for crimes for nearly 100 years after the gang’s dispersal. Their escapades have joined the tales of folk lore.

Lady Braves Dominate Octorara and Linden Hall
BY ARA GRIGORIANThe Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team allowed a total of 11 points in a two-game stretch, defeating Octorara and Linden Hall in LancasterLebanon League games on the road, January 19 and 24.
Coming off a loss to Section Four foe Columbia on Tuesday, January 17, the Braves rebounded in a dominant fashion, defeating the Octorara Braves 46-5 two days later.
“Our defense has been fantastic,” Jason McDonald, the Pequea Valley head coach, remarked. “We need to keep relying on the defensive side of the ball to get our transition game going.”
Pequea improved its record to 14-2 (5-2 league) with the win.
The top scoring for the Pequea Braves was shared between Janae Patterson, who scored 12 points, Brooke Graham (10 pts) and Ellie Rishel (8 pts). Both Patterson and Graham scored a pair of three-point baskets.
Jana Cota-Riubrugent, Sarah Arment and Carly Anderson each chipped in
with four points. Peyton Henshaw went 2-for-2 at the foul line for her two points and Katie Stoltzfus put up one bucket for two more points.
Pequea, after having blanked Octorara for the second half of that contest, didn’t allow a point in the second quarter and the fourth quarter of the Linden Hall game.
Patterson again led the team with 12 points, scoring half of those from three-point range. She also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out two assists. Henshaw also drilled a trey and finished with seven points. Ellie Rishel scored six and grabbed four rebounds. Katie Stoltzfus and Brooke Graham each had five points, one rebound and one steal.
“We have been playing well as a team,” McDonald said. “We’ve been moving the ball extremely well. Hopefully, we can continue to do so.”
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Pequea Valley boys played a couple of tough games against strong opponents. They suffered a 43-33 defeat at Annville-Cleona on Friday, January 20 in a Section Four clash. Early Satur-
day afternoon the Braves were back on the court, playing host to Oley Valley in a non-league game. Despite a strong third-quarter by the Braves, Oley Valley prevailed 43-37 in that game.
In that third quarter, the Braves outscored the Lynx 18-8.
“They were beating us 20-5 at the half,” head coach Thad Rittenhouse stated. “We came back and scored 32 points in the second half. Luke Rogers had his best game offensively all year.”
Rogers led the Braves with 12 points.
“We started going to Luke in the second half,” Rittenhouse said.
But it was the defense that deserved a great deal of credit in the Oley Valley game.
“We kept them to a season low - 43 points,” he pointed out. “Oley Valley is a very good team.
“We switched up a little bit against them,” continued the coach. “We went to a 1-3-1 defense and they had difficulty with that. If we’re not making our shots, we need to keep other teams close.”
Rittenhouse explained that offensive consistency is some-
thing that’s coming along for Pequea. For example, the Braves got out to a nice early lead against the A-C Little Dutchmen in Friday’s game. The Braves took a commanding 175 lead into the second stanza.
“We got out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter but struggled in the second quarter,” he explained. “We have struggled at the start of some games, so it was nice to get off to a good start.
The two sides were tied after three quarters. The Dutchmen went on an 18-8 run in the final period.
Annville’s Elisha Slabach led all scorers with 16. Joerick Irizarry tallied eight points for the Braves while Rogers and Jackson Neff each finished with seven.
“Offensively we have struggled making shots,” said Rittenhouse. “Our decision making needs to improve. That comes with experience. The guys are starting to do a better job of that.
“I see us playing better as a team at this point, but there is a lot of work to do to get into the same level as some of these teams we play,” he added.

Wiffle Ball Tournament Slated At Octorara
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe 11th annual Octorara Invitational Indoor Wiffle Ball Tournament will be held in the Octorara Junior-Senior High School and Intermediate School gymnasiums on Friday, Feb. 24, starting at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 25,
beginning at 8 a.m.
Each year, about 40 teams take part in the tournament, which is open to male and female players from fourth grade through adult. “There are three different circuits, as we call them,” explained Phil Capotrio, one of the event organizers. “Rookie is for fourth-
through sixth-grade (students), Junior is for seventh- and eighth-graders and Senior is for grade nine through adult. There is no age limit.”
Wiffle ball is played using a lightweight bat and a wiffle ball, which is hollow and made with plastic. Like in baseball, the goal is to score the most runs.
“The games are a half hour with (a team of) five players. There are traditional wiffle ball rules, and we follow them,” Capotrio said, noting that all regulations are posted on the event website. “Most people bring their own bats, but we have wiffle balls. People tape up their bats and make them look cool.”
He said that wiffle ball allows people of different athletic abilities to participate. “It’s become pretty popular, especially with the adults. It is played in a small space with
(short-distance) running,” said Capotrio. “We have some good ballplayers that compete, but most people do it for the fun of it.”
According to Capotrio, the first Octorara Wiffle Ball Tournament was held in 2011. “The tournament founder was Phil Rudisill, an Octorara High School teacher and assistant baseball coach,” he said. “The tournament (continues to be a) way for the booster program to raise money for the (Octorara) Junior-Senior High School baseball teams for equipment, field maintenance and other important items.”
In addition to crowning the tournament champions, organizers award a prize for the best-dressed team in each division. “People get creative. Sometimes they dress as branches of the military,” said Capotrio. “Somebody wore
pajamas one year - whatever you can think of.”
Spectators are also invited to attend. “We are encouraging all members of the community, whether they are participating or not, to come out to this fun event,” Capotrio said. “We will have good concessions, cool (giveaways) and

Kindergarten Expo frompg 1
“We will have (places to) sign up for kindergarten screenings and transition activities,” pointed out Eckert. Kindergarten transition nights will be held at each PVSD elementary school in late April and early May. Each night will focus on a topic, such as literacy, math, or social and emotional learning, and dinner will be provided. Teachers, principals, counselors, and nurses representing each school will be present to meet families that attend.
Kindergarten Readiness
Kits will be available at the expo for families that have not received them yet. Eckert said that the kits include scissors, pencils, and dice, along with information about immunizations, a Braves Bingo card, and a checklist for parents.
The event will also include free books, refreshments, a gift basket door prize, and more. Eckert has arranged for staff members from Salisbury and Paradise elementary schools to be present along with representatives from the Intercourse Library, Paradise Parent Teacher Organization and Salisbury Parent Teacher Committee, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, and other community organizations. Information about Pequea Valley youth sports programs will also be available.
“The goal is to get as many of our students as possible registered early,” said Eckert, who added that most children were registered by May in 2022. Readers who have questions may email lisa_eckert@pequeavalley.org or call 717-381-5020.

In 2023, the Lancaster Bicycling Club will provide $30,000 in grants. Grants will be made at the sole discretion of the Lancaster Bicycle Club. Grant funds primarily come from the net
profits of the club’s annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Classic ride, which is held each August.
Grants can be requested by municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations for four primary reasons. Grants are available to improve the bicycling experience in Lancaster County, including items like
bicycle repair stations, signs, and markings; for repair or maintenance of bicycling features like trails and covered bridges; for bicyclists’ rights and safety advocacy; and to promote bicycling in the county. Jay’s Handyman Service
NHAHS representative Don Horning referred to the program as “a look in the mirror.”
“(The program will include) a little self-examination,” said Horning. He shared that at one time, New Holland had an “unwritten” prohibition
against people of color owning property in town. “Was that part of the racial inequity that was happening everywhere in the U.S.?” asked Horning, who noted that discussing whether those attitudes affect today’s
perspectives will be part of the presentation.
The first program, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 13, at the GSV chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, at 7 p.m., will be called “Personalities and Perspectives,” and it will feature letters and storytelling. Horning will moderate, and Ruthann Ware and Dick Johnson will serve as narrators. “While much of the program will focus on the changing culture of the Welsh Mountains from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, members of the Lighter Side Players of GSV will portray the personalities of Abe Buzzard, Isaac Boots and Nancy Sandoe, three prominent residents of the mountain from earlier in the century,” said Paul Kelley, a member of the Racial Literacy Team.
Fran Rapp, head of the Lighter Side Players, will portray Buzzard, an outlaw who was active in the area in the late 1800s. Tony der Kinderen will play Boots, also known as Pegleg, a leader of the Welsh Mountain community. Born in 1889, Boots helped drive efforts to build a medical center on the mountain because it was too far to travel to Ephrata. Lou Ann Miller will play Sandoe, a black woman born on the mountain in 1891 to a Presbyterian minister and his wife. Her father served on the mountain, so Sandoe spent her childhood
ministering to the mountain folk. As an adult, she was involved in the founding of the Welsh Mountain clinic.
On Monday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m., well-known local storyteller Ken Sensenig will give a presentation on the religious history and mission activities in the Welsh Mountains. “Sensenig will present stories and historical research,” said Chet Yoder, GSV director of pastoral services. “He will touch on the Welsh Mountain Home as part of that,” added Yoder.
Yoder said the public is welcome to attend, and Racial Literacy Team member Sara Jane Munshower added that the primary goal is to examine these issues locally. “(We want to look at) how (this history) impacts what we do going forward as a community,” she said.
In the case of inclement weather, readers who wish to hear and see the presentation may livestream the event at www.gardenspotvillage.org/live.

At least yearly, Smile Pennsylvania, a mobile dental service visits the district. The Smile Pennsylvania team sets up in a room at one of the schools and treats up to 25 students in a day. “(Smile Pennsylvania) accepts all insurances,” said McCracken, who added that medical assistance is among those plans and that grants are available for qualifying families that do not have dental insurance. Smile Pennsylvania completes cleanings, restorations, X-rays, fluoride treatments, and sealants. Calling the Smile Pennsylvania
team “kid-friendly,” Lewis noted, “(Smile Pennsylvania staff) want it to be a pleasant experience (for students).”
“Dental care is a huge need,” pointed out McCracken, who added that she and Lewis both work hard to identify students in need of care. “The best-case scenario is for every (student) to have a dental home,” she added. Readers who would like to register a student for care may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on “The Dentist Is Coming to School” on the main page.

The sessions will be held at 9 a.m. at the 1719 Museum as well as Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.
“We like to share stories about the area’s history,” said Lois Miklas, administrator of the 1719 Museum. “We want to get people to think about what it must have been like for the people who first settled here and connect it to their own lives.”
There are only a few requirements to attend the classes to become a guide: Tour guides must be at least 18 years old and have the ability to educate small groups of people as they tour the property. Miklas noted that although the location has certain areas that can be physically challenging to navigate, such as narrow spaces and stairs, the museum will accommodate anyone who wishes to become a guide.
“The museum is great for people who like history; they’ll get a good dose of history from our local community,” said Miklas. The site is open from April until October, and the museum is looking for guides who can commit to providing tours at least one day or one half-day each month.
ECHO BLOWER
The 1719 Museum uses trained tour guides to take visitors through its property, which contains the original Hans Herr House, built by Mennonite settlers in 1719. It is the oldest site of Colonial settlement in Lancaster County and was inhabited by Mennonite settlers who traveled from Europe to Philadelphia before finally landing in Lancaster in 1710.
Visitors touring the property will also have an opportunity to see a replica of an indigenous longhouse that would have existed around the year 1650. The longhouse offers guests a view of how Native Americans lived along the Susquehanna before and during Colonial times.
The 1719 Museum also hosts its Maize and Snitz Festival in October each year. The festival celebrates various traditions and customs exhibited by both early American settlers and local indigenous tribes.
“It’s important for people to have a sense of what their community’s history is, so that they can see how they may be connected to it,” Miklas said.

Gallery Hosts Art
In Christian art, a square halo identified a living person who was presumed to be a saint. This square halo concept is also the focus for the winter 2023 art show at the Square Halo Gallery within The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.
The all-ages open arts invitational that runs through the end of February features work from artists from New York, Texas, and England, as well as many local artists. Any work containing a square was considered for the exhibit.
The show is in conjunction with the 2023 Square Halo Conference on Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18, titled “Ordinary Saints-Creativity, Collaboration & Community.” This year’s conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Square Halo Books, an independent publisher of works that present contextually sensitive biblical studies and practical instruction consistent with the doctrines of the Reformation. To learn more about the conference with keynote speaker Malcolm Guite at https://squarehalobooks.com /conferences#/2023-conference.
Future 2023 exhibits include an Irish-themed show in March and April that will display printmaking from two new books by Ned Bustard: “Saint Patrick the Forgiver” from IVP Kids and “33:
toric images and artifacts, model trains and behind-thescenes tours. All requirements except for the at-home activity will be fulfilled on the day of the workshop. There is a cost for one Scout and one adult, with a discount for two Scouts and one adult.
Virtual Train Tour: The H6sb, designed for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Guided by a museum educator, children will investigate the inside of the historic H6sb locomotive No. 2846. There will be a question-and-answer time. Admission is by donation.
The museum has also announced a special event and two trips. Brochures and registration forms for the trips are available at the aforementioned website.
The sixth annual Rails & Ales will take place on Satur-
day, April 1. This craft beer tasting event will be held among the museum’s historic trains in Rolling Stock Hall. Tickets are on sale on Eventbrite and by visiting www.railsandales.org.
A Buckeye Ramble will occur from Tuesday to Friday, June 13 to 16. Travelers on this customized trip to Ohio will ride trains and visit other railroad-related attractions. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, March 1.
A Riding the Scenic Rails of Norway Ramble will be held from Saturday, June 24, to Sunday, July 2. Travelers on this customized trip to Norway will ride trains and enjoy the scenery, food, history and culture. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, March 21.

In 2021, JASCPA implemented JA Inspire, a virtual career fair that schools can utilize for their students. The program simulates a real career fair, replete with business representatives who provide details on what it’s like to work for their companies and respective fields through the virtual platform. Upon signing into the application, students begin at the exterior of the career fair building accompanied by virtual students and school buses. They can navigate the page to visit the interior lobby, where dozens of companies have set up their digital booths. “It looks like a real career fair lobby,” said Allison Kierce, chief operating officer of JASCPA. “Students can visit any of the booths they are interested in to learn more about the companies and fields they may want to study in college.”
Prior to 2021, JA Inspire was a conventional career fair that was held in a physical location. Although schools resumed many in-person programs after the pandemic, many have opted to continue using virtual platforms such as the new iteration of JA Inspire. “A lot of people wanted to get back to having in-person career fairs, but there are logistics to that,” said Kierce. “Virtually hosting JA Inspire removes the need for schools to worry about transportation and allows students to see more companies in a shorter amount of time.”
JA Inspire is provided to schools free of charge, and in 2022, JASCPA was given funding to open JA Inspire to adults in addition to schools. Adults interested in the career fair can contact their local PA CareerLink agency for more information.
