Lasagna Dinner Will Be Served Drive-Through Style BY ANN MEAD ASH

Some of the most important features of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner fundraiser will be the same this year. Organizers will still prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties - hamburger, hamburger and

sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce - on the day of the sale. Meals will each include a square of lasagna, a salad, garlic bread, and a homemade dessert. Individual pans of each variety of lasagna will also be sold at a special price. Changes will include the method of delivery for the food and the date the event will be held. See Lasagna Dinner pg 3

Logan McGrane of Gap is a national motorcycle racing champion who comes from a family of men who have garnered top honors in the sport.

hen Logan McGrane of Gap was not yet 4 years old, he started riding motorcycles. By the time he was 4, he was racing motorcycles. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26 through 29, 2020, the 15-year-old Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) freshman smoked the competition during three days of racing in Travelers Rest, S.C. “He won three national championships,” said Logan’s grandfather Thomas McGrane. He also raced short track and half-mile events, along with the TT (Tours Trophy) race, which features

a jump and a right-hand corner. Off the track, Logan plays basketball for PVHS, and he was the only freshman to start with the PVHS football team in the fall of 2020, earning his varsity letter. Logan said that racing has not interfered with schoolwork or school activities. Racing motorcycles runs in Logan’s blood. “It’s what we do,” noted his grandfather, adding that Logan uses the motorcycles that were ridden by his late uncle Kyle McGrane, a champion racer in the Ice Racing Series, and a multi-Amateur National Champion, among other titles. Kyle was killed while racing in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2016 at the age of 17. Logan’s father was also a national champion, and his uncle Warren Diem was a world champion. See Family Tradition pg 4

Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age groups. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month, said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball. Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a shuttle run, and the V-sit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session, said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for

National Wear Red Day Planned The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, together with its signature movement, Go Red for Women, encourages community members to wear red and donate on National Wear Red Day, Friday, Feb. 5, and throughout February. National Wear Red Day seeks to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in women. The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health and is supported locally by companies throughout central Pennsylvania. Those who plan to participate in National Wear Red Day may consider purchasing the Red Dress Pin and other apparel at www.ShopHeart.org. Community members may make a donation to support the work of the American Heart Association at www.WearRedDay.org. They may join the conversation by sharing Wear Red Day selfies, personal stories about heart disease and tips using #WearRedAndGive and tagging @AHAPennsylvania on

social media. Community members may also consider signing up to participate in clinical trial research through the Go Red for Women movement and Verily’s Project Baseline. More information is available by visiting www.GoRed ForWomen.org, clicking on “Research” under “Get Involved” and clicking “Join thousands of women in the fight against heart disease.” To treat, beat and prevent heart disease and stroke, women should understand their family health history and know their five key personal health numbers, which help determine risk for heart disease and stroke. These numbers are total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. Additionally, women should make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. Women should know the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. Heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women than in men. For more information, visit www.goredfor women.org.

Valentine’s Day Fundraiser Set The fifth annual “Hearts for Lancaster” Valentine’s Day fundraiser, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square, will kick off on Friday, Feb. 5. Large, personalized, red hearts will be suspended from the lamp posts in the downtown Lancaster area and will remain, declaring love and affection, for two weeks. The club will also continue celebrating love for fur babies by hanging people’s choice of a dog bone, a heart, or a dog silhouette on the fence in front of Binns Park. Proceeds from the event in past years have allowed the Penn Square club to purchase two new bicycles and radio equipment for the Lancaster City Alliance’s bike ambassadors, equipment for Arbor Place and North Star

Initiative’s Harbor House, scholarships for Music for Everyone, sewer guards for some of the sewer grates in Lancaster, park benches in the city of Lancaster, and more. In 2021, proceeds will support the creation and installation of the city’s public art program sponsored “Diversity Mural” to be installed on West King Street in July. The club is also working to adopting Penn Square and its monument through the city’s Adopt a Block Program. Club members will work at The Holiday Inn through approximately Wednesday, Feb. 10, putting names on the hearts and assembling the hardware necessary to hang them. the market, pointing out new shelving, a reach-in cooler, and a barn door between the market and the storage area. Nagle noted that the cooler was purchased with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that is given to organizations to help reduce food waste. The barn door was a gift from the Intercourse Lions Club, and two of the walls were built by the Pequea Valley High School ninth grade CORE career readiness program. He also said that Weis Markets contributes hundreds of pounds of food per week through a Central Pennsylvania Food Bank connection. Nagle also credited the Paradise-area community with donating many items for the market through Food Fridays, an effort launched in April 2020 that invites area residents to drop food outside at The Factory from 9 a.m. to noon

each Friday. Burns thanked Nagle for helping make her vision a reality by putting time and energy into the project. Nagle responded, “I am big on space feeling good because space communicates so much. W hen you had this vision, I said, ‘Let’s step behind this and make it happen.’ Nagle closed the ribboncutting ceremony with a prayer that all who shop at the market would feel dignity and care. He thanked God for volunteer time and energy, and he prayed that Burns’ heart and hope for Factory clients would be evident to those who enter the space. On Jan. 4, The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, held a ribbon cutting to open its new Factory Market. The event, which was broadcast via Facebook Live, was facilitated by Factory Ministries executive director Adam Nagle and market director Kerri Burns. The remodeled market was based on Burns’ vision for a place that would offer dignity and affirmation to those who utilize the market. Nagle opened the event by introducing Burns and noting the role she played in the redesign of the market space. “This was her vision,â€? he said. “This has come from her head and heart.â€? “I hope that this space will be a bright spot in someone’s day,â€? Burns said. “I hope (Factory clients) leave encouraged by a kind word or conversation they had here.â€? Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory, joined the event electronically from her home. “The market plays a key role in everything we do on the social services side (at The Factory Ministries),â€? said Zimmerman, who explained that clients receive Factory Bucks for meeting with advocates and attending classes. “(Clients) can now walk into the market, and it’s more beautiful than ever ‌ and this tells them that they matter and that their journey matters.â€? After Burns cut the ribbon, she and Nagle took a tour of

The third annual Christmas Tree Lane presented by BCF Group has come to an end and the winners have been announced. This event, coordinated by the Lancaster Barnstormers with the help of businesses and hosts across Lancaster County, raised over $24,000 to give back to area nonprofit organizations. Christmas Tree Lane celebrates the holiday season with businesses sponsoring and decorating themed Christmas trees to raise money for local nonprofit organizations. This holiday season, in partnership with Fig Magazine, the Lancaster Office of Promotion, Discover Lancaster, and the Lancaster City Alliance, decorated trees were placed in businesses throughout Lancaster County in an effort to draw traffic into small businesses and inspire shopping local. Members of the Lancaster community were invited to vote for their favorite trees by making a donation. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organizations the trees represented. The three trees with the most votes earned additional donations for their nonprofit organizations. Teens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups. Children and teenagers

receive peer support and counseling, while their adult caregivers learn how to help youths grieve. Dealing with loss and grief looks different in children and teenagers as compared to adults, Kulas reported. “The best way to support a grieving child is to make sure the adult knows how to support them,” Kulas explained. “We teach them how to talk with kids, the importance of offering security and predictability, and how to establish discipline, structure, and routines.” The Coping Kids & Teens Program also runs Good Grief Clubs and Camp Chimaqua. The clubs are school-based groups run by trained staff members. Camp Chimaqua is a weekend overnight camp for youths ages 6 to 12. Each camper is assigned a trained volunteer who provides support throughout the experience. Camp was canceled in 2020, but Kulas said she hopes that it will be offered as a oneday event this year. “Camp is a lot of fun. We try to make it interactive,” Kulas said. “We help (campers) be kids again.” An intake appointment is

Rittenhouse. “Due to the COVID situation, we’re just not able to get in the gym. It is difficult to work on our offense with the lack of practice. “By Friday, our guys were just running out of gas,” Rittenhouse added. “Mennonite is a very good team and I’m not taking anything away from them. We were with them in the first quarter.” The Blazers only led by six points going into the second stanza. That was when they took control with a 22-10 run, earning a 43-25 advantage at intermission. Leading all scorers on the night were Pequea’s Devon Colyer and Mennonite’s Cole Fisher, each of whom scored 16 points. Colyer connected on a three-point shot as did teammate Nevin Stoltzfus, who tallied eight points in the game. “Nevin is the best outside shooter on our team,” Rittenhouse remarked. “He’s only a junior on our starting squad while the other four are seniors. The future looks big for him. “He has been placed into the spotlight to score for us,” Rittenhouse added. “He has worked hard in the off-season.” Luke Peifer and Antonio Lazar each finished with seven. “Lazar is our best defensive player,” said Rittenhouse. “He helps on that end of the court probably one of the best in our section defensively.” WRESTLING Returning seniors Dustin Huber, Luke Brown and Jace Beegle each registered a pin as did junior Liam McGinley in an L-L League wrestling match at Elco on Wednesday, January 20. Their efforts were not enough as the Braves’ fell to the Raiders 39-36 in their first meet of the season. It was a back-and-forth tussle that saw the Braves take an 18-6 lead in the first four weight classes thanks to the pins by McGinley and Beagle as well as the two teams’ exchange of forfeits. McGinley earned a first-period pin in the 106-pound weight class and Beegle did the same at the 126-pound bout. Sandwiched in between were six uncontested points per side. Two straight Elco pins and Tyler Anderson coming up just short in an 8-7 decision at 145 gave the Raiders a 21-18 lead. A Pequea forfeit at 152 was offset by consecutive pins - Huber at 160 and Brown at 172. Having to forfeit the 189-pound match relinquished Pequea’s three-point lead. The Raiders went up 33-30 and registered a pin in the 215-pound bout.
