According to Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical “The Secret Garden” at Cavod Theatre, the show is much loved among actors because of the strength of the musical score. “The music is so powerful it is like its own character,” remarked DePaul. “The music tells the story so well.” Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, said he had been waiting for an opportunity to do the show since he first heard the music in high school. “As soon as (DePaul) mentioned (‘The Secret Garden’), I was on board,” said Huyard. “I love the music.” “The Secret Garden” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 22 and March 1; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 23 and March 2; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 24 and March 3. “The Secret Garden” is based on the
children’s classic of the same title by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911. The musical version premiered on Broadway in the early 1990s. The original Broadway production earned seven Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The show tells the story of a young girl, Mary Lennox, played by Mckenna Donaldson. When Mary’s parents die of cholera in India, she is sent to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald Craven, played by Alexander Weaver, and his brother Dr. Neville Craven, played by Dan Lawback, in a secluded British manor. Upon arriving, Mary finds that the her uncle is still grieving the loss of her Aunt Lily, played by Alicia Burton. Lily, Archibald’s late wife, had died giving birth to their bedridden son, Colin, played by Lincoln Everett. Colin, who feels guilty about his mother’s death, is hidden in a room inside the manor,

which Archibald only visits when the boy is sleeping. Mary also discovers her Aunt Lily’s garden, which is locked up and overgrown with vines. She and her friends Dickon, played by Joseph Kelly, and Martha, played by Lauren Groff, are determined to revive the garden and the house as well. Because of the sobering subject matter of the drama, DePaul said that it has been challenging to stage the show without letting the presentation become too dark. “To pursue the direction we wanted to go without changing lyrics or lines, (we have been) instilling in the cast that this is about searching for God and trying to figure out what is blessing them,” said DePaul, who noted that symbolism and other techniques will be employed to lighten the mood and find joy even See “The Secret Garden” pg 10
The Cavod Theatre production of “The Secret Garden” will feature Alicia Burton (left) as Lily and Mckenna Donaldson (right) as Mary Lennox. The musical will play at Cavod in New Holland on Feb. 22, 23, and 24 and March 1, 2, and 3.

Meals are served in the church fellowship hall from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. According to mission committee member Bonnie Rice, the types of foods served are prepared on a rotating basis, but the group tries to serve a new menu once or twice each year. “November and December and January meals are pretty standard,” said Rice, who noted that November’s menu includes an Amish wedding meal, which mixes turkey, stuffing, and gravy in a type of casserole. In December, the meal consists of ham and scalloped

potatoes, and in January, traditional pork and sauerkraut are served. Other regular meals include spaghetti and meatballs, Lancaster County-style chicken potpie with noodles, and meatloaf. “In the summer, we have an indoor picnic with hamburgers and hot dogs,” said Rice. Attendance at meals has been as high as 115, but Eshleman said that usually 70 to 80 plus up to 20 helpers attend. “We gear toward feeding 100 (people),” shared Rice, who noted that leftovers are sometimes frozen and sometimes donated to The Factory Ministries in Paradise through another church committee that provides meals to the youth center. Ingredients to prepare the meals come from a variety of sources, including church members who donate food items and food that is purchased at a discount. Desserts and breads are donated by a market located along Route 30 in Gap. “They donate so much we have a free table,” said Rice. “They always send enough desserts, and it helps that we don’t have to worry about making (those).” The committee puts up sign-up sheets to ask for helpers, and many of the volunteers help regularly. “At one time, we had five to seven
(helpers) between age 85 and 93 that came every month,” said Eshleman. “We still have a 93-year-old (woman) on our committee who helps.” Church members arrive at about 1:30 p.m. on the day the meal is served to prepare the beverages and other foods that can be made in advance. At 3 p.m., some helpers arrive to wrap silverware, cut desserts, make mashed potatoes, and complete other tasks. Finally, those who serve the meal arrive. Dave Berkhimer, president of the church trustees, cleans the hall after the last attendee leaves. According to Eshleman, attendees at the dinners include area families, widows and widowers, and those who simply need a meal. “Some people come for the fellowship,” Eshleman said. Committee member Joanne Stoltzfus noted that when she first started helping, Rice told her that the attendees come to the meal for a variety of reasons. “You never know when you’re looking at someone what their real need might be. The kind words are as important as the food we put on the plate,” said Rice. “It’s not all about the food.” Readers who would like additional information about the monthly free community meal may call the church at 717-687-6619.

Miller Claims L-L League Gold at 145 by Ara Grigorian
Coming up short in the seventh-place consolation match was Tyler Anderson. His first match in the 132-pound brackets was a solid 19-2 technical against Nick Gilbert of Lebanon. However, a very formidable foe in the person of David Dariychuk pinned Anderson, sending him to the consolations. Anderson’s rebound included registering a pin, victimizing Adriel Merjudo of Annville-Cleona. He followed that with an 8-4 victory before Seth Fischer of Northern Lebanon earned an 8-3 win. Dariychuk also made it to the seventh-place match and was again pitted against Anderson. In another close battle, the Conestoga Valley standout eked out an 11-8 win to take seventh. Aidan Cooke wrestled at 152, posting a 6-2 win over E-town’s Cole Rice on Friday. He suffered a pin in the second round, losing to eventual runner-up David Over of Manheim Township. In the consis, Cooke was ousted by Donegal’s Mason Ober. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Pequea girls played two non-league games against York County teams this past week, coming away with a split decision. In raising their overall record to 14-4, the Braves found themselves fourth in the District Three
Class-AAA power rankings as January drew to a close. In the York Catholic game, which was played at Kinzers on Saturday, January 26, the Braves tried to battle back from a nine-point halftime deficit. The home team outscored the Fighting Irish 14-10 in the third period and shaved off another point from the lead before coming up short 48-44. Bethany Bills finished with a game-high 16 points. Abbey Leslie scorched the net four times from three-point range for 12 points while Caroline Horst scored 10. The Braves unfortunately had a poor shooting percentage from the free throw line, going 1-for-9. “We missed foul shots and missed a few layups,” head coach Jason McDonald noted. “Those came back to haunt us.” Pequea Valley defeated a Class 5A opponent on Monday, lighting up the scoreboard for 21 first-quarter points at York Suburban en route to a 59-44 victory. “We were very aggressive and attacking the basket in the first quarter,” said McDonald. “We weren’t turning the ball over. “In the second quarter we had some turnovers, but we were still making our jump shots,” continued
the coach. The Braves still held that 11-point lead at the midway point and extended it to 16 by the time the fourth quarter got underway. There were five Pequea players with double-digit totals in points. Clara Neff and Horst each scored 13 with Neff going 4-for-4 at the line and making a three-pointer in the process. “We were playing well and getting contributions from everybody,” commented McDonald. “We were running the floor and playing with confidence.” Marlena Ferry had an 11-point game, which included three treys. Bills and Leslie each scored 10. “Caroline leads us in scoring, rebounds, blocked shots and assists,” McDonald noted. “Bethany is our second-leading rebounder. She and Abbey Leslie are right in there and very close as second-scorer.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL In a non-league game against Linville Hill Christian, the Pequea Valley boys’ basketball team came close to earning its first win of the season. On Monday night, the Braves battled to overcome a 19-11 deficit, which they faced after one period. They came back with a strong third
quarter and hung tough in the fourth stanza only to come up short 59-50. The trio of Pequea players who finished with over 10 points were Devon Colyer (15), Nevin Stoltzfus (14) and Sean Liney (12). The scoring by Stoltzfus included pair of treys and a 2-for-2 night at the foul line. Chandler Petersheim of Linville led all scorers with 21 points. The Braves, who fell to 0-19, were coming off a non-league loss the previous Saturday at Octorara. The Octorara Braves extended a 14-point halftime lead by coming out strong in the third quarter, going on a 24-7 run. They topped PV 84-45. Though Octorara’s Keith Lamber was the game’s leading scorer with 21, Colyer finished with an impressive 20 points, including two treys. Liney finished with 16.

Pequea Valley’s Gabe Miller claimed the championship for his weight class at the L-L League Wrestling Championships, which were held at Garden Spot on January 25-26. The senior earned the gold in the 145-pound class, registering a technical fall and three consecutive pins. On the opening day of the championships, Miller topped Clint Herr of Solanco with a 20-4 technical. He then notched a second-period pin in each of his next three bouts - Joel Dionne of Hempfield, Anthony Glessner of Penn Manor and finally Bradley Cunningham of LampeterStrasburg, whom he pinned in 3:23. Joey Coblentz, another senior, claimed third place at 220. Coblentz bounced back from a 7-2 loss to eventual champion Dustin Swanson of Garden Spot in the semifinals and soared into the consi-semis where he blanked Hempfield’s Luke Dreyer 5-0 and went on to top T.J. Moore of Cedar Crest in the third-place match. On the first day of the championships, Coblentz pinned Matt Busby of Octorara in only 1:33. He followed that with a 1-0 defeat of Warwick’s Hayden Benner before suffering the loss to Swanson.
These two finishes, along with other strong placements by Pequea wrestlers, helped the Braves finish 12th in the team standings with 81 points. Jace Beegle earned a fifth-place finish in the 120-pound class with a 10-3 decision over Elizabethtown’s Cam Olson in the fight for fifth. On Friday, Beegle triumphed over Hunter Focht of Octarara in an 8-3 decision. He then edged Olson 8-7 before eventual champ Will Betancourt of Manheim Central pinned the PV sophomore. Following a tough 8-6 loss to Tanner Stefanick of Penn Manor, Beegle registered his second victory over Olson. Dylan Jackson claimed seventh place at 160. It was a championship quest that started and ended with the same opponent. Jackson had to fight hard in the wrestle backs after an opening-round 7-1 loss to Hempfield’s Dylan Bard. In the first consolation match, Jackson pinned Evan Heilman of Annville Cleona at the 4:59 mark. He then topped Hunter Hockley of ELCO by an 8-2 score. Jackson’s quest ended thanks to Ethan Walmer’s 11-4 victory, sending the PV senior into the seventh-place match were he exerted revenge on Bard, wining 3-1 in overtime.

Songs Of Inspiration from pg 1 Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration.” The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals. “It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme,” said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues. The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.” The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist swing. Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed by Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon. “Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer,” said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. The best part is that the three of us are actually friends; we all care very much about each other, and I think this will translate to the audience clearly and add another layer to the show.” The show will tour to venues

Mark Fiscus, who is involved with the Envirothon competition and Nature Club at WFCS. He saw a similar presentation at a public school and was impressed by the presentations and by the enjoyable atmosphere provided for the community. “It was a great evening. I really enjoyed going around looking at all the different tables and seeing what people were doing,” Fiscus said. “I presented it to the teachers here, and there was an enthusiastic response.” At least 20 stations will be set up in the multipurpose and art rooms, where visitors can walk to the different tables and participate. “The whole idea is these can be hands-on presentations. (Visiting) students can actually participate,” Fiscus said. “The main purpose is to have a community project where people come in and enjoy the evening.” In addition to the interactive stations, five eighth-grade students who will be taking their science fair projects to the Chester County-level competition will have their projects set up and ready to explain to visitors. WFCS principal Robbie Martin said that even though WFCS is a small Christian school, it keeps up with advances in education. “What we do is take what we’ve got and move it forward to the best of our ability. We’re a forward-thinking school, and we’re very much doing what everybody else is doing,” he noted. Martin encourages the community to enjoy the first-time event. “Come and see what we do, but at the same time there is also going to be other stuff there so you can see what’s actually going on in education as a whole,” he said. “We’re excited to have it, and we look forward to the community being here.” West Fallowfield Christian School is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.wfcs.org or www.facebook.com/west fallowfieldchristianschool. In the case of extreme weather, a snow date of Tuesday, Feb. 26, has been set. Home-Based Head Start Welcomes New Students By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“(Home-Based Head Start) is perfect for my child,” commented Nedra Rohm, whose 5-year-old daughter, Leah, participates in the program that recently opened in Strasburg. Once a week, home visitor Melanie Bird spends 90 minutes with Leah and Nedra at their house, working together to help Leah make a successful transition to kindergarten next fall. “Large crowds are too much

It’s awesome that they provide this.” Head Start offers a free, highquality prekindergarten program for 3- and 4-year-old children from income-eligible families. It is parent-based and uses the Parents As Teachers curriculum. “Parents are the child’s first teachers,” Bird explained. “I teach the parent, who teaches the child, and when they go to school, these are the parents who See Head Start pg 11

LifeCycles from pg 1 said Deremer, adding that it is increasingly difficult without a mentor to provide guidance about how to get there. Deremer and his wife began to pray about how to proceed. “(We knew) if we did this we needed to step out in faith,” Deremer explained. “We needed to find people who shared the vision of mentoring boys in a God-honoring environment (to) give them the opportunity to grow into the young men they were created to be.” In 2014, the couple took their vision to Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, where they met with the pastors and director of community groups. “They were supportive and asked us to bring it to the mission group,” said Deremer, who also gathered friends who shared the vision to form a board and incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In May 2015, LifeCycles held its first ride. The organization now rides more than 50 times per year. “We have now traveled more than 77,000 miles together,” noted Deremer. “That’s three times around the planet without
injury.” From the middle of April until early September, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in outdoor locations in Columbia and Lancaster for about 90 minutes. “We have a welcome and a message, and we stretch,” said Deremer. “We ride about an hour and then we sit down for a hot meal.” All meals are donated by people who support the vision of LifeCycles. A New Holland branch of LifeCycles rides from Garden Spot Village on Wednesday evenings from April through November. Since the organization is now in its fifth year, some of the participants are now looking forward to getting a driver’s license, while others are in college or working in the local area. “All boys are working on the same issues,” noted Deremer. “They are trying to figure out what it means to go from age 13 to young adulthood in a smart way. They have questions to work through, and we are thrilled to engage with them.” Deremer is especially excited about an upcoming fundraiser for
LifeCycles. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, a number of experienced adult riders will take part in the Do Hard Things Challenge Ride, which will begin at the Pennsylvania and New York state line, near Elmira, N.Y. “We will ride (through the night) from there to Williamsport and then all along the Susquehanna River to Wrightsville,” said Deremer, who explained that riders will raise funds through sponsorships. To inquire about volunteering, readers may email director @lifecyclesteam.org or call 717-586-2511. More information about LifeCycles may be found at www.lifecyclesteam.org.

especially proud of one participant who is slated to eclipse 4,000 miles when the group starts holding regular rides again in the spring. “(That young man has) gone through Texas and Mexico to the border of Panama,” said a smiling Deremer. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church and overseen by Deremer and his wife, Marcie. The program mentors boys from the greater Lancaster area in a bicycle touring environment. All equipment is provided to the boys free of charge. Deremer said that he began LifeCycles in 2014 when he reached a point of frustration seeing young men “derailed” by their circumstances. “I could no longer stand on the sidelines,” said Deremer. “I had to see if I could bring some resources together and do something.” Deremer was specifically concerned about boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who did not have a positive male role model in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing into an adult today,”

“The Secret Garden” from pg 1 in the face of death. Both DePaul and Huyard are excited to be working with the musical cast in bringing the show’s score to life. “They are well balanced and great musicians,” said Huyard. “I think people will be very impressed with the music coming out of this cast.” DePaul noted that one of her favorite numbers is “Lily’s Eyes.” “(The song) is this beautiful duet sung by Weaver and Lawback, who play the Craven brothers,” she said, adding that “A Bit of Earth” is another standout musical selection. The message of the show, according to DePaul, focuses on
love. “Love is life,” she noted. “Without love, we have nothing.” Huyard agreed, calling the garden Mary discovers a metaphor for bringing love back to a dark and desolate place. “(Mary) loses her family, and she comes into her uncle’s life,” he said. “He’s living in a very dark place, and she brings life back into her uncle’s home.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

will be involved.” In addition to weekly home visits, students who enroll in the Strasburg-area Head Start program are also encouraged to attend two socialization days a month, which are held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 40 W. Main St., Strasburg. Between the individualized and group instruction, students will be assisted in developing fine motor skills, as well as literacy and cognitive skills. They will also learn about health, nutrition, and safety. Nedra noted that while large groups are difficult for Leah, she has done well in the group meetings. “There’s not a big crowd here,” Nedra remarked. “It gives her another outlet for social interactions that she needs.” Along with educational resources, Bird connects parents and students with social services that can provide things like food, home heating fuel, and weatherization, as needed. Students also have access to health and development screenings and help for challenging behaviors, and parent workshops will be held periodically. Home-Based Head Start is offered by Lancaster County Head Start, which is a program of Community Action Program of Lancaster County. The program is funded by federal grants. Bird noted that the federal government wants a Head Start to operate in every school district in the country. Because the Strasburgarea Head Start is located in a church, not a school building, enrollment is not limited to children who live in the LampeterStrasburg School District. Bird currently has openings for five children and will create a waiting list. Parents who would like more information or would like to enroll their children may call Bird at 717-333-1939.

LCCS To Host Open House Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, will host an early childhood and kindergarten open house on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 9 a.m. Families with students entering preschool, prekindergarten, or kindergarten are encouraged to attend. LCCS provides an academic program to students in a nurturing Christian environment. LCCS offers two kindergarten program options. The traditional elementary kindergarten students come to campus five days a week. The objective of the full-day kindergarten program is to build a solid foundation upon which students grow academically, physically,
relationship and achieve a high degree of academic excellence. The University Model kindergarten model meets two days in the central classroom (on campus) and three days in the satellite classroom (at home). University Model students are on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Early Childhood Education program at LCCS aims to instill a love for both God and learning in students. LCCS offers both preschool for 3-year-olds and prekindergarten for 4- and 5year-olds. Children must be age 3 by Saturday, June 1, to enroll in preschool. Preschool takes place
spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The program is designed to be academically challenging, as well as developmentally appropriate. Kindergarten classrooms at LCCS are organized and structured to support all areas of development, and a variety of materials are used to stimulate students’ curiosity, initiative, and inquiry. LCCS offers an alternative solution for parents desiring both the gift of time with their elementary children as well as the services of a Christian school. This additional and cost-effective program is called The University Model. The University Model was developed to preserve and strengthen the family
