Feeding Paradise The Factory Food Pantry Offers A Hand Up By Ann Mead Ash

On a cold January morning, Sadie May Stoltzfus, who volunteers to oversee The Factory Food Pantry, opened the refrigerator loaded with pineapples and saw the benefits to Paradise-area residents. “We are blessed with pineapples because a tractor-trailer had an accident,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that the truck driver offered the pantry more than 1,000 cases of pineapples. “We didn’t need 1,000 (cases),” said Stoltzfus with a chuckle. She did, however, accept 30 cases for the pantry. Access to the choice pantry, which is located in The Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, is open to Paradise-area residents who have earned Factory Bucks

through the programs of The Factory Ministries. Residents in need may earn Factory Bucks by working individually with a Factory social worker or attending a workshop or cooking class. Those who have earned Factory Bucks may visit the pantry once per week to buy a supply of groceries. Fifteen-minute time slots are available during the pantry’s regularly scheduled hours. Items available in the pantry include staples such as canned goods, canned fruits and vegetables, snacks, granola bars, pasta, and rice. According to Stoltzfus, bread, produce, milk, and eggs are free. “We try to have a variety of frozen meat available,” noted Stoltzfus, who added that Factory Bucks can be used to pay for items such as coffee, tea, crackers, and canned chicken and tuna. One shelf is reserved for snack items. Cooking classes, which are taught by a Factory advocate or volunteer at Grace See Food Pantry pg 2

Annual Banquet Will Benefit TTC/Potter’s House “Our premise is understanding that recovery is not the antidote to addiction,” said Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. “Belonging is the antidote to addiction. So recovery can’t happen in isolation,” he explained. To help raise funds to support the ministry, TTC/Potter’s House will hold its annual banquet on Friday, March 8, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. See TTC/Potter’s House pg 6

Kylie Stoltzfus (left), who handles marketing and promotions for The Factory Ministries, and Sadie Mae Stoltzfus, a volunteer who oversees The Factory Food Pantry, display food items available to local residents who take part in the Factory Bucks program. The food pantry is located in The Together Community Center in Paradise.

LMHS To Present “Bye Bye Birdie” By Ann Mead Ash

Director Dean Sauder considered a number of plays before settling on “Bye Bye Birdie” for the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) spring musical. Sauder noted that one reason for selecting the show was to contrast 2018’s “Wizard of Oz” production. “We are intentional about choosing shows from different eras to help give our students a rounded theater experience,” said Sauder. LMHS will present “Bye Bye Birdie” in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28; Friday, March 1; and Saturday, March 2.

Point Church, are designed to utilize food items available at the pantry. Basic items, along with frozen and fresh produce, are purchased from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Local churches hold food drives, and several area businesses donate to the pantry; however, donations from individuals and groups are accepted each weekday, when The Factory is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Donated items that Stoltzfus always hopes to see on the shelves include canned chicken, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, granola bars, pastas and pasta sauces, and unexpired canned goods such as vegetables and beans. “We like to have coffee of any kind, especially in winter,” noted Stoltzfus, who added that soups, hot chocolate, and tea are important in the winter as well. Non-food items and household goods that are not included in the pantry’s budget and are difficult for Stoltzfus to obtain for the pantry include paper towels and cleaning supplies, along with personal care items such as deodorant, shampoo, and soap. Hours during which clients can visit the pantry by appointment currently include Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. “We try to have two volunteers for each appointment slot,” said Stoltzfus, who added that shelves are stocked by volunteers twice per week. The pantry can serve up to 48 clients per week, but Stoltzfus added that the pantry volunteers have sometimes served more than that. The Factory Food Pantry also gives away food during Factory Fresh events held the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at The Factory. During Factory Fresh, items obtained from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank are given away free to anyone who registers. Stoltzfus noted that organizers request that individuals register in advance by calling The Factory. “(Those who take part) walk through and can take one of each food item,” said Stoltzfus, who added that they never know what types of food will be available. The next Factory Fresh will be held on Saturday, March 9. Readers who wish to learn more about The Factory Ministries may visit www.the factoryministries.com. Individuals in need or who wish to volunteer may call 717-687-9594.

FFA Members from pg 1 Pequea Valley FFA members recently attended the Pennsylvania FFA Mid-Winter Convention. Several students received recognition at the event. Among the honorees were five Pequea Valley FFA members who received FFA jackets as part of the FFA Jacket Scholarship. Receiving the scholarship from the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni were Kiersten Winey, Trey Beiler, Tyler Zook, Ethan Smucker, and Julia Shaubach. The scholarship application required each member to write an essay about what the jacket means to his or her future in FFA. Jamie Stephan, Eden Groff, and Adrianna Reiter earned Keystone Degrees at the convention. To qualify for the award, which is the state degree for Pennsylvania FFA members, a student must have accumulated more than two years of a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) in any area of agriculture, have volunteered for more than 25 hours of community service, and have attended more than 15 FFA events at all levels. Jamie is the current Pequea Valley FFA president. Her SAEs include agriscience research, volunteering at the Paradise Sportman’s Association’s trout hatchery, and working at a woodworking business. Eden’s SAEs include raising market lambs, dairy beef steers, and dairy cattle. Adrianna raised dairy cattle for her SAE. Pictured on front: Pequea Valley FFA members (from left) Kiersten Winey, Trey Beiler, Tyler Zook, Ethan Smucker, and Julia Shaubach donned their new FFA jackets after receiving FFA Jacket Scholarships at the Pennsylvania FFA Mid-Winter Convention. Rosie to stay strong,â€? said CalixAlvarado of her role. “She does show her sensitive spots.â€? Sauder noted that the role of Rosie stands out in the show for a number of reasons. “Even as Albert keeps folding ‌ and she’s being picked on by her future mother-in-law, she rises above it, and in the end she triumphs,â€? said Sauder. “There are not many shows from this era that have a woman (character) with that strength.â€? Beidler pointed out that performing from a script written for a different era can be a challenge. “We’re doing a show set in the 1950s in 2019,â€? she said. “There are a lot of things said in the show that you cannot say now.â€? Sauder agreed, noting that gender roles that were assumed during that time period have changed drastically.

A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. on March 2. “Birdie is the story of Conrad Birdie, played by Noah Schnabel. When Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, is drafted into the Army, his agent, Albert Peterson, played by Javon Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Kathleen Calix-Alvarado, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss. The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show. Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Willa Beidler, who wins the competition. Kim’s parents, Harry MacAfee, portrayed by Isaac Harnish, and Doris MacAfee, played by Mikayla Beers, are not exactly thrilled at the prospect of their daughter kissing a rock ‘n’ roll star. “Birdie, which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. While the story of Conrad and Kim plays out, Rosie is struggling to move forward in her relationship with Albert. The pair is impeded by Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Merry Yirga, who dislikes Rosie and continually takes steps to thwart the relationship. “It’s a challenge as

This year’s keynote speaker will be Armond “Bud” Roda. Roda is the volunteer staff chaplain at the Lancaster County Prison and a liaison for referrals to the TTC/Potter’s House program. Roda has worked with both TTC/Potter’s House and the prison for more than 20 years. During that time, his influence has helped steer more than 200 men to TTC/Potter’s House. Roda became a believer in Christ at the age of 18. He and his wife, Karen, have been married 21 years, and they have five children and 12 grandchildren. In addition to volunteering at the prison, Roda serves with

hospice care, is an elder at his church, and sits on several ministry boards. Roda says that his ministry consists of “being a nobody (who is) trying to tell everybody about Somebody.” At the banquet, Roda will speak on the event’s theme: “Captivity to Destiny: A Broken System and Broken People Restored.” TTC/Potter’s House offers a three-phase program with a total capacity of 21 beds. Hoover noted that one goal of the program is to help students integrate into the community and give back. “Our ‘captivity to destiny’ vision is oriented toward students having an experience in recovery,” he explained. “It’s about them living out their life purpose in recovery as productive citizens in our community and becoming part of God’s rescue plan (to help) others who are struggling.” Hoover noted that the ministry is hoping to expand the phase three facet, called the Leola Discipleship House, which offers permanent housing solutions to those who have completed phases one and two of the program. “ We have been incorporating phase three in a

partnership with four congregations as partners,” said Hoover. “It’s about safe, affordable housing and a commitment to drug testing. It’s about being able to live out sobriety.” Going forward, the organization is considering instituting a Christ-centered recovery track in a residential setting for women. “Working at the spiritual needs along with physical and emotional needs of the individual (sets us apart),” said Hoover. The menu for the banquet will include appetizers, a salad and bread bar, meatballs with sauce, baked chicken, au gratin potatoes, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, cranberry salad, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, along with a dessert bar. Registration is necessary to attend the banquet. Readers who would like to register for the banquet must do so by Friday, Feb. 22, through the Eventbrite link on www.transitiontocommu nity.com or by calling 240-2744603 and leaving a message. The Strasburg Fire Company extended its annual spring donation and consignment sale to two days last year, and sale committee members were so pleased with the results that they will keep the two-day format again this year. The 45th annual sale will be held at the fire station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, and continuing on Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 8 a.m. “Friday evening’s sale was very successful,” reported committee chair Ivan Fisher, referencing the 2018 event. “There were lots of people, and it made Saturday more enjoyable.” The auction on Friday ran until 8 p.m. last year, and Ivan expects it to run later this year. Crafts and small quilt items will comprise many of the auction lots. This year, the food offerings on Friday evening have been expanded, with grilled sausage sandwiches, fried shrimp, and french fries added to the menu, which also includes chicken corn soup made by fire company members and volunteers. Soup takeouts will be available on Feb. 22 from noon to 5 p.m., as well as all day on Feb. 23. “We’re trying to make (Friday) a family night out. Sit down with your kids and enjoy your evening,” Ivan invited. He noted that tables will be set up in the station’s dining hall, and a few high chairs will be available for little children. The success of Friday’s sale last year enabled more items to be moved on Saturday, Ivan remarked. The weather did not appear to dampen spirits too much.

“We had a good day (on Saturday) despite the rain,” said committee member Jonathan Peachey. Ivan explained that on wet days like last year, there are more tents to protect items and attendees and much less hay and straw for sale. This will be the first year that horses are not on the sale bill, he added. “Mostly fire companies don’t sell horses anymore,” Peachey remarked. The spring sale - the fire company discontinued its fall sale several years ago - is the organization’s largest fundraiser. “We are looking to replace an engine in 2021, so it’s important to have another good sale,” Ivan said. Sale committee member Mike Lockard shared that the apparatus scheduled to be retired is a 1982 Seagrave pumper. In hopes of having another profitable sale, the committee has arranged for thousands of items to cross the auction blocks. Hundreds of quilts, crafts, new and used tools, antiques, groceries, new and used furniture, outdoor furniture, sporting goods, collectibles, shrubbery, feed and bedding, farm machinery, sheds, building materials, carriages, gift certificates, and lawn and garden supplies are slated for sale on Feb. 23. The fire company kitchen will sell a variety of food and beverages, and there will be several food vendors as well. A local Amishrun ice cream shop will be among the vendors for the first time this year. “They support the fire company, so it gives us a chance to support them as well,” Ivan said. Ivan expressed his gratitude for the generosity of area businesses, many of whom have donated gift certificates or other items for the sale. He added a special thanks for the members of the sale committee, including his co-chairs, Isaac E. Fisher and Amos Fisher. The vast majority of the committee is Amish. “The Amish community feels it’s a good way to give back to the fire company for all the services it provides,” Ivan said. “But it’s not just Amish that makes the sale successful; it’s the whole community.” Donations for the sale will be received at the fire station from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 20 and 21, and from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22. For more information about donating or the sale in general, readers may call the station at 717-687-7232 or Isaac at 717-687-6223. Pictured on front: Strasburg Fire Company sale committee members Jonathan Peachey (left) and Mike Lockard display one of hundreds of quilts that will be up for bids at the organization’s 45th annual spring donation and consignment sale, which will take place on Feb. 22 and 23.

Moores Memorial Library director Trish Vandenbosch (left), Friends treasurer Karen Woods (second from left) and Friends president Jeannette Kolb invite the community to the Friends’ annual fundraising tea, themed “Victorian Afternoon Tea,” to be held on Feb. 23 at Chantry Place, located adjacent to the library in Christiana. By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library will hold their annual fundraising tea on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Chantry Place, located adjacent to the library at 15 N. Bridge St., Christiana. Each year the tea has a theme to add to the experience. This year, the theme will be “Victorian Afternoon Tea,” corresponding with the currently popular PBS television series on Queen Victoria. The tea will include an assortment of savories and sweets, as well as various teas at each table, plus there will be a buffet table with additional items. There will also be a toast with sparkling cider. Also featured during the tea will be local storyteller Deborah Pieri. “She’s going to tell some kind of story that relates to the Victorian era and (provide) an old-fashioned look at the world,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends president. Each guest will receive a free ticket for the door prize drawings, with items chosen to relate to the Victorian theme. Dress

for the day should be appropriate for an afternoon tea. Guests are invited to help set the mood by wearing Victorian attire or hats. Kolb emphasized that tea time attire may be either contemporary or period. “(People) like to get dressed up, though it’s optional,” she said. “The Victorian era is broad, so if they have any type of costume attire they want to wear, that’s appropriate.” Designed for teenagers and adults, the tea has become a popular event, which usually sells out. “This is the fourth year; I think people look forward to it,” Kolb said. The venue for the upcoming tea will be arranged with tables for eight. Those who wish to be seated with a particular group should mention that when purchasing tickets. Three tables on a handicapped-accessible level of the facility will be available to those who request them at the time of ticket purchase. Tickets, which must be purchased by Tuesday, Feb. 19, are currently on sale at the library, located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. No tickets will be See Victorian Tea pg 9

BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Braves battled a pair of Section Five rivals this past week, facing Columbia and Lancaster Country Day on back-to-back nights of boys’ basketball action. In the Tuesday night game at Kinzers, the Braves fell behind to the Cougars as LCD came away with a 5537 win. The loss dropped Pequea Valley’s record to 0-21 and to 0-10 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “We lost Nevin Stoltzfus early in the game to an injury and Sean Liney got in some foul trouble,” Rittenhouse said. “That hurt us because of our limited numbers. “We were forced to play jayvee players the whole game,” he added. “We didn’t have the depth to keep up with them. That has been the challenge all year.” The Cougars led by only seven points heading into the second quarter. However, a 20-7 run before halftime helped the visitors take a 37-17 lead by intermission. The Braves, who were led by Devon Colyer’s 11-point performance, actually outscored the Cougars 20-18 in the second half. Tyrell Stoltzfus made a pair of three-point field goals and finished with eight points on the night. Liney scored seven while Antonio Lazar chipped in with five points. “It was an all-around good scoring effort for the team,” Rittenhouse remarked.

Bradley Fry scored 12 to lead LCD. Lance Lennon scored nine points. Rittenhouse was asked about the team exercising discipline and managing to stay in the game. “We’ve been preaching discipline all year long,” replied the coach. “It wasn’t about wins and losses this year; it was about learning the game and relying on one another as a team. You’re going to learn a lot from losses.” The Braves suffered a 75-42 loss to league rival Columbia the night before. Pequea kept pace at Columbia, trailing by only one basket heading into the second quarter and by a mere nine points at halftime. “We actually hung in there,

especially in the first half,” said Rittenhouse. “In the second half, it got to a point where it was hard for our boys to keep up with the pace. All year, I’ve not pressed though as a coach I’ve done that for years. Columbia had a full-court press in the second half. We struggled and they put us away.” Devon Colyer scored 18 to lead the Braves. Colyer, who recorded three treys, tied Matt McCleary of the Crimson Tide for the games top total in points. Nevin Stoltzfus poured in 10 points while Lazar scored six. “When things don’t go well, it can show character,” Rittenhouse said. “These boys have been battling all year.”

VITA saved Lancaster County residents more than $2.7 million in tax prep fees, and more than $12.4 million in refunds went into their bank accounts. VITA provides free tax preparation services, including federal, state and local returns, to taxpayers who make less than $62,000 and who live, work or go to school in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Even though refunds may be delayed, taxpayers are still encouraged to file as early as possible. The county’s VITA sites began opening on Jan. 22. Sites include Community Action Partnership, 601 S. Queen St., Lancaster; United Way of Lancaster County, 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster; Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. As the organizers of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner prepared to create an Italian atmosphere for the 10th year, pastor Bruce Tully remembered some of the guests who have dined at past events. “Last year, a couple came to celebrate their anniversary,” said Tully. “Another couple from out of state drove by and saw the sign and stopped for dinner.” This year’s dinner will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. Each year, organizers enhance the venue by adding special lighting and Italian music playing in the background. Mark Steller will again serve as maître d’ to escort guests to their tables. For the 2019 event, organizers will prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties, including hamburger,

Betty Snyder (left), Margaret Sensenig (center), and Deb Burns (right) are preparing to serve up pasta and more at the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner to be held at the church on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce. Salad, applesauce, garlic bread, and beverages will also be served. A variety of desserts and coffee will be offered in a separate dessert room dubbed “Dulce Terrace.” Past dinners have raised approximately $2,000 for church mission trips to work in orphanages in Guatemala, serve in Israel, or perform maintenance work at JAARS headquarters in Waxhaw, N.C. JAARS is a support arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators that provides transportation and supplies to remote areas. This year, organizers have decided to help fund local mission projects, including aiding the area’s ministerium. “Part of what we raise will go to a discretionary fund that helps the Conestoga Valley Ministerium Helping Hands Fund,” explained Tully. “That is the fund our ministerium uses to help those who qualify in our district with needs such as rent or heating assistance or to help displaced persons.” Tickets for the lasagna dinner will be available at the door at a set price for adults. Tickets for children ages 5 to 10 will be discounted, and children age 4 and under may eat for free. Takeout meals will also be available. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-951-9717. In the case of inclement weather, readers may visit www.salemhellers.com for event updates.
